If Andy keeps pouting I can envision a scenario in which Joba, Hughes and Aceves each makes about 18-22 starts. However it makes a full season of AJ even more imperative.

With the market being so scarce they might be able to sign a pretty damn good starter for the $ 10 million they budgeted for andy n a one year deal so the guy could try the market again next year.

"It’s pretty sad what a pack of chumps New York baseball writers were a year ago "

Pete,

Not sure what your reference to one year ago is. Sure a year ago was ridiculous but only one month ago rumors reached a fevered pitch over the yankees interest in Manny - the source of which was repeatedly cited as being Hank's interest in Manny.

It's remarkable that journalists are still using Hank as a source and ignoring the inconvenient fact that he has ostensibly little say in the operation of the team - but they are still quoting and citing Hank on personnel moves.

It looks like Andy and Yankees are at an impasse, I'm not holding my breath for him to come back, the Andy money has been spent. That being said, I think Aceves is a more natural fit into the #5 role this year, he pitched a bunch of innings between Mexican ball and the minors, and he isn't tremendously young like the other guys. He is our innings eater. It's useless to have all of this pitching dpeth and not be comfortable throwing these guys out there.

Kevin, if you actually read Pete's remarks in full BEFORE jumping on your keyboard with both feet, you would be aware that he says 'myself included'.

Guiseppe Franco-I agree it will be Andy Pettitte or Phil Hughes. I'm okay with that but it kinda sux because I'd really like them to come around to Ben Sheets. I know he's an injury risk too but when healthy he makes 30+ starts and has ace stuff. Plus we'd still have Hughes,, Coke, Aceves and others to fill in when there is an injury. Randy Wolf, while no where as good would be a solid lefty signing to give us 180...200...or more innings. IMO John Garland is an under rated starter on the market as well. But I think in the long run either Andy comes back or Hughes is our #5. But we shouldn't decide its in ink because there's plenty of time for a signing or trade to change it all. Swisher and/or Nady could bring us another starter as well.

I'm getting the increasing feeling that the final slot in the rotation is going to be Andy Pettitte or Phil Hughes.

I don't think they are going to target another veteran starter if Pettitte doesn't return.

Now I like Hughes as much as any Yankee fan and I believe he'll be a good one for many years, but he did miss three months of the season in 2007 and another three months in 2008.

This cannot be ignored.

Given the injury history of Burnett - the Yanks are just one DL stint away from having both Hughes and Kennedy/Aceves in the rotation and starting 40% of your games with Joba on an innings cap.

Seems to me like a pretty big gamble, especially after what happened last season with all the injuries and subpar pitching by the youngsters even when they were healthy.

Whether it's Pettitte or someone else, they really need that innings eater at the back end of the rotation.

Pettitte would give the Yanks an edge over either the Red Sox or Rays pitching staff and that's very significant in the toughest division in MLB.

Hank is a very busy man. He spends his day...um:

Watching cartoons?
Playing with one of his horses?
Buying packs of cigarettes?
Working on various sketches of horses to show Matsui?
Talking on the phone to his imaginary friends?
