Yankees spread the word in Taiwan

Several readers in Taiwan e-mailed this morning with news about the clinic the Yankees held in Taoyuan, which is about 45 minute drive from Taipei. Despite cold a wet weather, a nice crowd showed up.
The clinics will run through Sunday. The Yankees sent five members of their player development staff from Tampa.
A special guest today was Taiwan’s national hero, Chien-Ming Wang.
Given Wang’s popularity in Taiwan, many people there have become ardent fans of the Yankees. It’s good that the team is doing its part for baseball. And maybe this will help them find another player.

This being done “for baseball”? C’mon, I understand the need to sell the company line, but is it a requirement that it be pervasive in every post?
hal, Pete isn’t employed by the Yankees so this is hardly “the company line.”

When baseball opened shop in China 2 years ago who lead the charge? The Yankees. I’m sure that when baseball gets involved in India, the Yankees will lead the way.

It explains what the NBA is doing in China, baseball in Taiwan and what the NHL has been doing in Eastern Europe for years.
Might someone be able to assist in sharing who the people in the picture are? It’s always nice to put a face to a name you hear tossed around here.

You didn’t know that India already has professional players, the Pirates signed 2 indian players to Minor league contracts this summer.
The players won a reality game show, and the Pirates decided to take a flyer on them.
give me irabu, pavano, vazquez, weaver and the rest of the yankees bust, before you give me a team made up of reality show winners.

You know, proportionally, in the Olympic games India has the lowest number of medals per capita.
I think Jamaica may have the highest, but I’m not sure.

i was 100% aware that the Pirates signed those two young men. My point was that when baseball is ready to set up a systematic baseball infrastructure in India it most likely will be the Yankees who lead they way-like what happened in China.

I’m not comfortable defending Gammons, but he clearly referenced in his ESPN report that his comments were based on Teixeira’s remarks at the press conference. Teixeira’s remarks included a statement that he knew he was going to the Yankees two weeks before Christmas. And John Henry jetted to Texas one week after that.
So it’s not on Gammons if Teixeira backtracked from that remark. It’s like the guy who claims he was misquoted in his own (ghost-written) biography.
I’m not saying that Gammons doesn’t get things wrong. I’m saying that he accurately portrayed Teixeira’s PC version of “the process.”
I posted earlier that Teixeira probably was strongly inclined towarsd the Yankees, but could be enticed elsewhere. But that’s not what he said at the press conference.
But I’m not losing any sleep over it ….

You keep bringing this up but that’s not what Tex said. He said that he and his wife decided that the PREFERENCE was to play in New York.
Compare the NY Times interpretation of the press conference to Gammons’:
“Teixeira said he decided on Dec. 12, in a dinner conversation with his wife, to make the Yankees his first choice if all offers were equal. Yet as late as 11 a.m. on Dec. 23, the Yankees had not made another offer. Boras wanted an answer by 1 p.m. that day, and Cashman said he expected the Red Sox to make the winning bid.”
That’s the key – “to makde the yankees his first choice…” Everyone in a negotiation has a first choice.
And this is exactly what Tex said yesterday:
“Two weeks before Christmas, I talked to Leigh about it again, and we kind of decided that, hey, the Yankees are where we want to be. [Yankees general manager Brian Cashman] might want to give Leigh a hug, because when I asked her during the process, ‘Where should I go, where should I go?’ she’d always say, ‘I just want you to be happy.’
“Finally she said, ‘I want you to be a Yankee,’ and it was a done deal. Once we got the contract figured out, it was a no-brainer for me.”
“we kind of decided that, hey, the Yankees are where we want to be…” is miles away from the Sox had “no chance.”
Just because Tex wanted the yankees – if all other factors (i.e. money) was the same doesn’t mean much at all – the yankees didn’t even have an offer on the table.
Why is this so hard to understand?
Brian, wasn’t it Boston that requested the Texas conference? Teixeira gave them the courtesy of letting Boston make their pitch, Teixeira mad he counter-proposal, and the conference was over. Henry sent his emails to the media, I suppose just to shake Boras up…I’m not sure of the purpose, but, it backfired. The only one that tried to play anybody was Henry, and he ended up playing himself.
The next time that Boston tries to sign a player, leave Luccino at home. It appears that every time he opens his mouth or gets involved, he screws up. It’s like the like from “Bang The Drum Slowly” when pitcher Henry Wiggen is negotiating his contract and tells the team owner’s assistant/gofer, (not gopher) Bradley, that every time he opens his mouth, it’ll cost another $10,000. He’s clearly a detriment. It was reported that he said sthing to Teixeira that annoyed him. What was said wasn’t eported, but that came from a Boston reporer.
Moral Of The Story: Don’t try to outslicker the chief slicker.

You deserve to be a guest sitting next to Gammons in his luxury suite provided to him by John Henry at The Green Sardine Can gathering all the information you can about the extreme upside of the farm system.
If Gammons spills a drink, I’m sure you’ll clean it up for him.
Wang looks like he’s put on some weight. Reason to be concerned?
