Will Dale Berra be on the panel ?

The risky thing about Ben Sheets is the potential need for TJ surgery. If he goes down for that, he’s out for a year plus, and then he has to make a comeback. At one point a couple months ago I was thinking 2-3 years would be OK but only if we could be sure his late season injury wasn’t the kind of thing associated with TJ. In retrospect, it makes no sense signing him to a 2 year deal because if he can’t make it through ‘09 you’ve got nothing more than another Pavano.

Take a flier under the assumption he’s going to need TJ surgery anyways? Maybe. Yanks have taken chances in the past on guys with far less talent. Would a cheap 2-year deal with a team option for a multi-year extension at a higher salary be wise? Maybe 3 years before the option? Assuming he’ll need the operation this year then basically the Yanks would be paying to reserve his services for 2011, should he successful comeback. If he can’t make a come back, they can just let him go.

Thinking along the lines of “if healthy, he can pitch” … at what point, and for what amounts before & after such a team option hits, would it be worth taking such a chance on him being able to pitch (effectively) again?

  3. Laura

To me, having a rotation that has both Burnett and Sheets in it is too risky. Andy and the Yankees need to get this figured out and fast.

Green Beret: Harang (a prospective 4th or 5th starter) is arguably a better pitcher than CMW (our incumbent #2). Here are there ERA+’s and IP since 2005:

    Wang:
    2005 105 ERA+, 116 IP
    2006 124, 218 IP
    2007 121, 199 IP
    2008 109, 99 IP

    Harang:
    2005 112 ERA+, 211 IP
    2006 124, 234 IP
    2007 125, 231 IP
    2008 94, 184

Yes, Harang pitched 47 fewer innings than in ‘07. That’s what happens when you miss 5-6 starts due to injury. (BTW, Wang pitched 100 fewer innings.)

SJ44, is the GM’s office in Seattle still impossible to deal with?

If not, I wonder if the Yankees would re-engage them on Washburn. I’d actually prefer to see them try to acquire Bedard.

I realize Bedard had some problems with the guys in Seattle’s clubhouse but on that team, with Ichiro and all the losing, who wouldn’t?

In 2007, Bedard was one of the best pitchers in the AL.

  6. Laura

“I realize Bedard had some problems with the guys in Seattle’s clubhouse but on that team, with Ichiro and all the losing, who wouldn’t?”

Bedard has personal problems regardless of what clubhouse he’s in. No way he’d make it in NY.

  7. kill-schill(ing)

Here’s my offer to Pettitte, take it or leave it.

$10 milion base salary with 3 separate $2 million incentives.

    1) $2 million for 200 innings
    2) $2 million for 16 or more wins
    3) $2 million for ERA under 4.00.

Bedard is supposed to return by June or July by the way.

  8. kill-schill(ing)

Do you know what they are Laura? Just curious.

    Was he disliked in Baltimore?

BTW, Bedard is a free-agent after 2009 anyway. Personal problems, notwithstanding, he’s worth the risk, in my mind, for one year, provided the Mariners wouldn’t demand more than a Melky and a B-prospect.

  9. BD

I’m don’t think purely performance-based incentives are allowed (e.g. sub-4 ERA, 16 wins). You can base it on things like number of starts, All-Star appearance, etc., but not strictly on performance. Don’t ask me why.

  10. Wave Your Hat

I posted this in the previous thread before I saw the new one:

I reiterate all my comments on Andy from yesterday and the day before. The people claiming Andy would be “overpaid” at $10MM or that the Yanks would be “generous” to pay Andy $10MM are flat out wrong.

Looking at the contracts that have been signed, Andy seems to be worth $10MM or more.

Johnson got $8MM. He’s 46 and a real risk not to reach 200 innings. His numbers were put up in a weaker league.

Dempster got $12MM, and an escalating multi-year contract. Granted he had a much better year than Andy in 2008, but if you look at his performance over the last three years, I don’t know that I would not rather have Andy.

If Smoltz hits his incentives, he’ll make around $10MM for at most two-thirds of a season.

Next, from a demand point of view, there are only two free agent starters left who are better than Andy. Lowe and Sheets. Sheets has an issue and Lowe has rejected a 3 year contract at around $13M per. Lowe is better than Andy, but not by that much once you factor in the league he pitched in and the much worse defense behind Andy.

Next, this HGH issue is IMO way overblown. Yes, it embarrassed the Yanks, and I’m sure strained their relationship, but it did not affect the way Andy pitched last year. No one claims it did that I’ve read.

Andy’s numbers were down last year due to a second half shoulder injury. Almost everyone agrees he pitched through it to help the Yanks. He could have gone to Tampa in July, like some other pitchers might have done, and had very pretty 2008 numbers, but he did not.

Andy is very likely to give you 200+ innings. He’s never been worse than a league average pitcher. He’s almost always been better, usually significantly better. That would be of enormous value to the Yanks next year.

If the Yanks have decided they need another solid starter, it’s silly for them to trade Nady or Swisher for one. Neither player is going to bring back much in a trade, and why trade them and weaken our depth when we can sign a pitcher?

The Yanks appear to have budgeted at least $10MM for another starter. Andy is right there. If it takes another million or two to get the deal done it seems silly to quibble in an offseason where the Yanks gave Marte $12MM over 3 years and have spent enormous sums to be the best team in baseball.

If Andy is really holding out for $16MM, then that’s another issue. But I find it difficult to believe that’s his final position.

The Yanks and Andy ought to sit down and hash out the deal.

  11. Gary

I’m in agreement with SJ. Give Pettitte a window until this Sunday. In he closes the window, his Yankee career is history.
Spring training is earlier than usual this year because of the WBC. Players should now be getting focused on leaving home soon for Tampa and relocating their families.
Cashman and Girardi need to know soon who will be reporting on 2/13 for pitchers and catchers.

  12. John in Ohio

Wang doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

He’ll be even tougher now that his ground balls will morph into great plays by Teixiera.

  13. ANSKY

Regarding Sheets, I was thinking with the assumption in mind that he’d either be in the shop for repairs or rehabbing for most of ‘09/’10. We’d already know to look for other options to count on in the meantime.

In a way it’s sort of like the Red Sox letting Teixiera get away so they have room for Pujols in St Louis forgets to sign him before he becomes a FA. You know the he won’t be there for a couple years, so you fill it with someone else or whatever you already have else until then.

The difference is that (other than in Peter Gammons’s world) this would be the intended plan from the onset.

And unless St Louis screws up, it’s unlikely Pujols will ever become a free agent so it could be a far better plan.

Boston’s probably taking a shot on Smoltz, right? And there’s a big difference between a 42-year old former all-star coming off arm surgery (again) and someone like Ben Sheets.

And this wouldn’t be a ‘response’ to a Smoltz/Sox deal either. Sheets has already been discussed for a while.

Seriously. Is there a team out there that would truly need Melky to play their Center Field ???

Who realistically would want him & why ?

  15. kill-schill(ing)

Upstate, I read somewhere that the Mariners simply want to unload Bedard for some of the reasons Laura intimated.

i need to go to Yogi’s museum one of these days. i was just talking about a trip there with my folks the other day…

  17. Walter

The Yogi Berra Musueum is an incredible place, having grown up with the Yankees, it left an indelible impression on me, beyond baseball, Yogi has been quite a leader, and way ahead of his time. A must see for baseball fans. To see his 10 World Series rings….David Tyree’s helmet from last year’s Super Bowl Catch, and the ballfield…wow

  18. bridget

do you think this seminar would be good for high school students?

  19. Walter

    Bridget,

Absolutely, we are expecting a number of high school students, as career development starts with undergraduate studies, and it is never too soon to get started taking courses or enrolling in an undergrad program.
