There's something i really don't understand. Since Andy Pettitte clearly isn't willing to accept the $10 million dollar offer and he isn't willing to take a pay cut, why not sign Derek Lowe? Let's say we sign Lowe for 3 years worth $45 million. Annually we would be paying him for less than Andy and more of a reliable pitcher as well. Since he is a Class A free agent, the Yankees would only give up a 4th round pick. Finally, and this is my biggest point, if the Yankees sign Lowe, we can finally put Joba, our golden arm, back in the bullpen where he truly belongs.

Rebecca,

Your analysis on the free agent rosters were very good reads. Thanks for putting them all together!

However, I also read your Sheets argument, while very good as well, I, too, tend to stand on the "get Sheets" side of things, so I'd like to offer a counter point.

My reasons are this...comparing Sheets to to rest of the free agent crop of starters, in terms of ability, I don't think anyone can say that he's not at the top. His price tag isn't something I worry about, since we're talking the Yankees getting him, and not a small market team.

What Sheets provides is an ace at the number 4 position. It makes it so that we only have one slot for a kid, Joba. Don't get me wrong, I want Hughes in there at some point, but after last year's Hughes/Kennedy debacle, I don't think it's wise to have kids in both of the 4-5 spots. Remember, Joba is still unproven. Everyone assumes that he's a lock to go out and be amazing and injury free. He's not, and the Yankees can't afford to go into another season with that looming over them.

Now, if Sheets can be the guy he's meant to be, then we got ourselves a hell of a rotation. If he gets hurt somewhere down the line, then we can throw one of the kids in there. Meanwhile, the kids are getting more seasoning in Triple A or as the long man, and building their own arm strength.

As for Sheets' arm angle and how it relates to his injuries, I think this is fixable, and with a change of scenery, a new pitching coach, and an organization with better facilities and capabilities, I think the guy has a good chance to turn it all around. This could be quite a coup.

I think the Red Sox are smart to take flyers in Penny and Smoltz. These guys are great, but should they succumb to injury again, they have back ups. If they're healthy, though, the rest of the AL East is in trouble. Sheets can work in the same way. I really think the reward far out weighs the risk, and I also think the Yankees are getting another seasoned starter no matter what. I do believe in the young guys, though, and I don't want to clutter the rotation with a Lowe or Perez, who will command at least three years. Don't get me wrong, I like Perez as well, but this is why I want Sheets above all others. One or two years of possible ace like material at the number 4 slot, and we can get the kids in there at some point. I think a contract for him is a good maneuver.

For anyone who’s sick of hearing that the Yankees buy their championships, take a look at this article:
