RCN Boston just converted to digital and got my first look at MLB Newtwork. Sweet little segment with Ricky Henderson about stealing third base. Now I am ready for the season.
How many mroe days to pitchers and catchers?

    February 13, so 30 days!

  6. Nick in SF January 13th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Let me be the first to say: Baby Wang is not an Ace!

Actually, a commenter from Taiwan (Iris?) broke this story right here on LoHud a few nights ago.

And finally, I think we can all agree that Seven is a better name than Soda.

  7. five iron from fenway January 13th, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Katie – Thanks. I need something to hold on to considering it is going to feel like 10 below tomorrow in Boston!
Tampa is probably pretty nice this time of year.

Yes congrats to Wang, it is a great thing as I am enjoying my first baby, have to go back to work next week and I dred it. Spring training is coming soon, 32 days for the Yanks

  13. Bronx Jeers January 13th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Nineteen’s a good name for the little Wangster.

    From previous

  15. Nick in SF January 13th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

I was raised to think that anything above 14th Street was ‘upstate’.

  25. Yankee Trader January 13th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Congrats to the Wangers and little Wangeroo.

    From the last thread.

    Any interest in this deal?

Nady and his one year contract for Randy Winn and his one year deal. Winn another switch hitter with good situational stats and speed would fit nicely in the bottom third of the order, and could possibly play CF, with swisher in RF and Damon in LF.

Would like to expand this deal to obtain Sanchez another lefty pitcher with upside-Kennedy and Veras/Ramirez. Others?

Also Braves interested in Nady. Nady for Kelly Johnson. Power for a versatile OF’er/2nd baseman. Braves have Prado to take over 2nd.

  26. JoeT 28 in 10 KEEP PHIL FRANCHISE AND CANO!! January 13th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

I’d MUCH rather Nady then Randy Winn … that’s just me, others may have different opinions though.

and no more trading for second baseman – we have one of the best

  30. Yankee Trader January 13th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

    JoeT-
Kelly Johnson could play OF,where he played before converting to 2nd base, better average and speed than Nady, and a left handed bat. Agree Cano is our 2nd baseman.

  31. Bryan C January 13th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

According to Taiwanese news, it’s suppose a baby boy.

  32. Phil Parcells January 13th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

If it were me, I’d do a Nady for Kelly Joghnson trade. Johnson is 4 years younger, cost controlled, left-handed, versatile, and has the same career OPS as Nady.

I don’t really know much about Kelly Johnson – thanks for the info YankeeTrader. I was thinking the Nady/Winn part of that. Based on what you and Tom said, it sounds like Nady for Johnson is a trade that would only be OKed on the Yankees side though

  44. saucy January 13th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Before moving up here, I always thought ‘upstate’ meant anything outside of NYC that was still in the state and isn’t part of long island.

Now I’d say it’s anything above I 84. Still don’t know why people seem to be turned off from the term ‘upstate’.

  47. GreenBeret7 January 13th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Why do people think it’s alright to have Kelly playing left field, but, argue that Jeter doesn’t hit enough to play a corner outfield spot?

  48. Tom January 13th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

GB, point well taken. However, Jeter is in the down slope of his career and Johnson is entering his prime.

I’m proud to have grown up in upstate NY. I’m from the Finger Lakes region, off of Cayuga Lake. It’s absolutely beautiful there. Not very exciting, but a great place to grow up in. And I go back there every year (I’m in central Ohio now) because of the beauty and peace I find there. Oh, and the winery tours are okay too :)

    saucy -

To answer your question from last thread, no OBP is not the same thing as wOBA. wOBA is Weighted One Base Average. It’s explained here…..

Bryan V: The best part of Upstate NY is going to Cooperstown the day after blizzard, when the Hall of Fame is almost totally empty.

  68. rodg12 January 13th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Here’s an even better explanation of wOBA…

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs.....oy-of-woba

  69. Bryan V January 13th, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Rebecca-I know that the whole “upstate” is relative, so it’s not a big deal. However, it is funny since Cooperstown is over 3 hours from where I grew up. Either way though, Cooperstown is a beautiful place as well.

Rodg12-Actually just looked at wOBA at FanGraphs. Not a big fan of those metric stats, but it makes a lot of sense.

    Runs scored

Not that I really care about a player’s personal life, but I’d take Kate over Madonna.

I don’t care what ARod does though, as long as he continues his run of MVPs during odd years.

  74. NHYankee62 January 13th, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Anyone else hear Randy Levine on the Michael Kay show tonight?

Randy did an excellent job explaining why the subpoena against him hold absolutely no merit whatsoever.

The biggest misconception is that the Yankees are now using public money (taxpayer money) to finance the new stadium. I even though there was some truth to that myself after hearing all the stuff in the media.

However, Mr. Levine clearly explained that the Yankees have taken out bonds from the city which are financed by private investors. These bonds are to be paid back by the Yankees in full. The biggest reason for using the bonds is that they’re tax free and that get them at a much lower rate than if they went to a private bank. The Mets did the same exact thing as they so many other teams in MLB. Many other large companies such as the New York Times did the same thing to finance new buildings.

It should be noted that these are bonds. It has nothing to do with taking taxpayer money that would be otherwise used for schools, hospitals, roads etc. The Yankees are financing this stadium themselves.

The NY assemblyman going after the Yankees actually voted in favor of the Yankees plan twice. He also earmarked substantial amounts of money for various raceways in Yonkers. Going after the Yankees is his way to make a name for himself.

The Yankees are doing this the right way, yet just because there’s a bigger spotlight in NY people like to try to scrutinize them and attack everything they do.

The construction of the new stadium also created 6000 to 7000 new jobs with paid benefits.

The Yankees are nothing but first class and the best organization in sports. Don’t let all the negativity in the media which is completely devoid of facts make you think otherwise.

  75. rodg12 January 13th, 2009 at 10:13 pm

RBIs JoeT, seriously? Seriously? Probably the most overrated statistic out there. Has very little value in determining how good a player is as far as I am concerned.

  76. rodg12 January 13th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Anybody else watching Von Wafer play out of his freaking mind against the Lakers? Unbelievable.

  77. NHYankee62 January 13th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Arod is not saint. The guy left his wife high and dry. Starting running around with strippers, then Madonna, and now Kate Hudson?

It should be noted that Mickey Mantle probably screwed half the women in NYC during his hey-day. The difference was you don’t have nearly the media coverage you do today.

I also couldn’t care less about how Arod is as a person. I just want him to keep producing.

  78. DT January 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Thank you for posting that! People keep saying that tax payers are paying for the stadium. I feel like screaming!! Yes they are paying for the metro north station and roads around the stadium. The Yankees and Yankee fans won’t be the only one to use at least the roads.

The additional money the Yankees are requesting is a LOAN!!! This is why I take what the media says with a grain of salt. They slant everything to fit their agenda.

whats killing the yankees here is the double dipping. they got the $900M before too many people were looking too closely at the funding plan. now they go back asking for another $300M after the financial downturn it just doesnt seem like the city should be involved in helping the yankees pay for finishing thier suites in any way. let them go borrow the money from a bank, just like a hotel would have to.

RBI’s – runs batted in. the object of the game is to score runs, you score runs by driving them in – hence RBI.

yes, it may be a little overrated but the only three stats that matter are on base, runs scored, and runs batted in.

another interesting read on the stadium financing from back in november:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11.....about.html

    the highlight:
“Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that the state and the city would cover at least $659 million in costs related to new stadiums for the Yankees and the Mets. The teams will receive an additional $480 million in tax breaks of one kind or another.”

  99. Tarheelyank January 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pm

I’m very serious. All a high number of RBIs tell you is that a man came up a lot with men on base. That’s it. It’s entirely dependent on the players in front of a batter. Why would you ever measure how good a player is by how good the players in front of him are??

  105. ham fighters January 13th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

good jobs new york says the cost to the city for the stadium is “$500 million and growing.”

    and there’s this: ”
Recently, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and state Assemblyman Richard Brodsky (D-Westchester) held hearings. Both officials complained the city failed to provide all the information requested.

Last week, Kucinich said the city is withholding 70% of the documents his Subcommittee on Domestic Policy asked for.”

Is anyone watching the 1947 world series on MLB Network. If so do you know if these announcers are realand were they actually there or was this in the timewhen they had the announcers in another place as when th ebat hits the ball it sounds like sound effects.

It is pretty cool to see the film from back then.

    ————————————————————

Those are newsreels that they showed in the theatres and shipped overseas to the military occupation troops. The announcer only did the voiceovers.

CMW should name his son “Ace”, so when people say Wang is not an ace he can reply by saying, “No, but my son is.”

Let’s see people argue about that lol

RBI is a better stat for evaluating a team than a player.

Am I the only one here that remembers the war last year over the proper pluralization of RBI?

(It’s RBI, not RBIs, because it’s Run*s* batted in, not Run batted ins)

  111. Bronx Jeers January 13th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

I love that soundbite of Giambi’s press conference.

“I’m not just here to be the Prom Queen again.”

    What?

“All a high number of RBIs tell you is that a man came up a lot with men on base. That’s it.”

I’d like to amend that a bit.

“All a high number of RBIs tell you is that a man came up a lot with men on base.” And then got a hit!

  112. gayle January 13th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

As always Green thanks. By the end I sort of thought that was the case but being as I didnt start watching utnil it was half way over I wasnt sure.

  113. rodg12 January 13th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Here’s a great example of why I think RBI (just for Rebecca ;) ) are overrated. Jose Guillen had 97 RBI last year. Jose Reyes had 68 and Hanley Ramirez had 67. Reyes and Ramirez are two of the top players in the game. Guillen is awful. But, looking at just at RBI, you’d think Guillen was better.

Jose Molina got a clutch HBP WO RBI (singular) last season, if I recall correctly.

So you want to know how Rice gets in the HOF?

Check out the faceoff blog from today and read Carp’s response to me in the comments section.

Pete, you need to teach your colleague a thing or two about the “modern day geek garbage” he refers to.

It really is sad how some of these guys simply refuse to acknowledge that there are better ways of evaluating players.

    Hey Albany Guy:

As it was already mentioned earlier in this blog: you can’t get anymore left than the Village Voice. If these clowns spent half the time worrying about actually punishing criminals or keeping the city safe then maybe that garbage paper would actually be worth reading!

So the Yankees asked for more money in bonds? So what??? It’s money that they’re paying back. No taxpayer money is being used here. The article cries out to all the bleeding hearts that money was kept out of schools back in the 70′s to help the Yankees build a new scoreboard. That’s NOT the case now. The comparison is completely invalid and a shameful attempt by the paper to paint a negative picture on the Yankees.

Let me ask you is it ok for all the other teams in pro sports to use bonds but not the Yankees?? Because no one else seems to complain about it when other teams do the same exact thing. Yet, when the Yankees do it all hell breaks loose. See the double standard??

Even worse is that many other pro sports teams DO use taxpayer money to finance new stadiums or renovations like Ralph Wilson did with with my Bills in Buffalo. Yet, once again, there isn’t anywhere close to the same amount of uproar as with the Yankees using bonds.

Also, the Yankees asked for the additional $300 million or so after their initial proposal. They had to ensure they could cover additional expenses such as $60 million for making it the safest park in baseball.

The Yankees, despite all their financial might, would not have been able to build a new stadium by going to a bank instead. They have done more then you could ever imagine to improve the Bronx. They have brought in much needed revenue, build nice parks along the waterfront, and improved the Metro system (something that was needed for the past 60 years or so). They are a team that actually makes money and has put their own money back into the product by putting a great collection of talent on the field instead of pocketing the money like so many other owners do. Now the Yankees are actually paying for a new Stadium which will be a great source of pride and entertainment for all Yankee fans for many years to come.

  120. Bronx Jeers January 13th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

    Rodg,

Good point but both of those guys hit leadoff no? Maybe 25% of their AB’s come with absolutely no chance to get an RBI. They also hit after the pitcher and most likely the 2nd worst hitter in the lineup that day. It’s not a pure comparison.

I see your point but still, RBI’s (or RBI- Hello Rebecca) are where the money’s at.

  121. Bob(The Original) January 13th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

It’s RBI, not RBIs, because it’s Run*s* batted in, not Run batted ins

    —————————

    Nope.

When it’s abreviated RBI it becomes a singular unit. Thus when you are talking about multiple ones it’s RBIs.

  122. NHYankee62 January 13th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

    ham fighters:

Since you like to read such a highly respected paper:

Let me know if the Slimes will be as critical of Obama’s $1 trillion + spending plan as they are of the Yankees (one of the few organizations that still actually makes money).

“Or got hit, or walk, or…”

Hit a two hopper to the 1B, or a fly ball to the CF, or a dribbler to the SS, or a chopper to the 2B…”

And in almost all of those cases we would still say…

    Got The Job Done.

There’s a heck of a lot of interesting “uber” stats out there and that’s all great but the team doesn’t win unless there’s men crossing the plate.

  126. JoeT 28 in 10 KEEP PHIL FRANCHISE AND CANO!! January 13th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

  127. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story January 13th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Bob: Nope. It’s RBI. It’s still an abbreviation.

Unless you’re saying ribbie…but if you are pronouncing the letters, you say “He has 108 RBI”, not “108 RBIs”.

  128. ham fighters January 13th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

touched a nerve there, eh guys. the fact is the city is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on this project.

i didn say anthing about what other teams and cities do, i was just rebutting yankees fans who say the team is paying for everything. its just not true.

  129. NHYankee62 January 14th, 2009 at 12:04 am

    ham fighters,

I suppose the city is going to pay for some of it (extra construction costs). You also have the creation of 6000 to 7000 jobs for the construction of the stadium which is a damn good thing in this economy.

However the fact that the Yankees are paying for the stadium itself by paying back bonds speaks volumes. How many other teams do such a thing???

  130. Bob(The Original) January 14th, 2009 at 12:06 am

Rebecca, would you say 10 POW or 10 POWs?

  131. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story January 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am

Bob: POWs, but that’s because I’m saying it like a word, not an acronym.

  132. Nick in SF January 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am

    Is it MILF or MILFs?

(I don’t know what that means, I overheard someone say it)

  133. JoeyA January 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am

Does anybody else share the disappoint I have in not signing Alex Cora? He would have been a great pick up to sure up our bench, especially that the Yankees are set to trade either Swisher or Nady or both. Just seems to me we should have at least been in on him. Maybe I missed a rumor?

  134. saucy January 14th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Hmm, which debate do I want to jump into: who’s paying for the stadium or RBI vs RBIs?

  135. Andrea January 14th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Rebecca and Bob: not to interrupt, but it should be POW, not POWs. Just like it’s RBI, not RBIs.

  136. Andrea January 14th, 2009 at 12:13 am

JoeyA: I was thinking about Cora. That would have been a good signing. Was he too expensive? Why did the Yankees pass?

  137. Nick in SF January 14th, 2009 at 12:15 am

If you write/say each word, of course it’s “one hundred runs batted in.”

But it you use the acronym, it is acceptable to say “one hundred RBIs.”

    Does Grammar Girl agree?

“Neil asked a related question: how to make initialisms plural when you’re pluralizing the first word of the phrase when it is written out. For example, RBI can stand for “run batted in” or “runs batted in.” Well, Neil, it’s OK to add an s to the end of RBI to make RBIs the plural of runs batted in, even though the s is added to run when you write the whole thing out. So a run batted in is an RBI, and runs batted in are RBIs.”

    http://grammar.quickanddirtyti.....-cpas.aspx

  138. saucy January 14th, 2009 at 12:15 am

RBIs comes in on the blackberry suretype (capitalization and all), so i’m going with that!

  139. Andrea January 14th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Nick in SF: Maybe it’s OK to add the s, but it’s not correct.

This debate was actually already had on this blog last year, I believe, and Pete actually chimed in. I remember it. He insisted that it is “10 RBI,” not “10 RBIs.”

  140. Andrea January 14th, 2009 at 12:18 am

BlackBerry suretype also tells me that “Rockland” needs to be “ROCKLAND.” So I don’t always trust it.

  141. Bronx Jeers January 14th, 2009 at 12:18 am

Hey! My debate is important too!

Boils down to this ladies and germs.

Do you wanna hear Frank Sinatra sing “New York, New York” after the games or do you wanna hear Liza Minelli sing it cause I wanna hear Frank’s version and in order to hear Frank, I need some dudes to get some freakin RBI’s or RBI or whatever as long as it’s not just 1 RBI!!!! as in a singular run batted in cause then we’re probably going to hear Liza and hearing Liza is not good for anybody!!!!

  142. PAT M January 14th, 2009 at 12:18 am

After all these years I thought it was ribbies ( rbi’s )…Not that I had that many……Has Andy Pettite resign yet ?????

    RBIs just sounds better anyway.

  145. Andrea January 14th, 2009 at 12:21 am

You tell ‘em, Nick in SF. No one can hold you down!

And the more time that goes by, the less I think that Andy Pettitte is coming back :(

  146. Nick in SF January 14th, 2009 at 12:22 am

Step onto the #4 train and say “How many RBI does Arod have?” and then see what happens.

  147. DT January 14th, 2009 at 12:27 am

    Is it an ATM Machine?
    Is it a PIN number?

Some phrases and words are just part of the vernacular. RBIs are here to stay. ;-)

  148. Bronx Jeers January 14th, 2009 at 12:27 am

“Step onto the #4 train and say “How many RBI does Arod have?” and then see what happens.”

Exactly. You’d probably get kicked in the head. And then there’s definitely no hearing Frank that night.

And IMO, Madonna’s no MILF but Kate Hudson is.

  149. Andrea January 14th, 2009 at 12:27 am

I don’t even want to get into what’s wrong with the majority of what people say on the #4. And I think regardless of if you ask how many RBI or RBIs A-Rod has, you’ll get negative answers, unless he goes back to 2007 style.

The fact is that we, as speakers of English, rarely speak in correct grammar. Colloquial English is not the same as grammatically correct English.

If you’re having a conversation (or writing on this blog, even), RBIs is fine. But if you want to be some kind of sports journalist, be aware that it should be RBI. Or if you need to write essays or something about POW or MILF.

  150. saucy January 14th, 2009 at 12:28 am

Forget the #4 train, can we have John Rocker ask the question on the #7 train??

  153. Tarheelyank January 14th, 2009 at 12:37 am

Where’s Dave. We need a 500 word discourse on why we need Sheets. Thereby eliminating the need for rbi(plural), as he will only need rbi(singular)

  154. DT January 14th, 2009 at 12:50 am

  155. no.27 January 14th, 2009 at 2:05 am

The Yankees should sign Varitek. He is so great that ESPN created a stat for him: NHC (no hitters caught). He can catch whoever the 5th starter is and they won’t have to worry about getting another pitcher and be the bullpen catcher. The Yankees could also let the former Red Sox captain give out blumpkins before big games. Everyone wins.
