I’m not sure if I’m more impressed with the Stadium or with the caliber of graphics.

Someone just told me ESPN desportes reported Jorge is planning on playing for Puerto Rico in the WBC. Good news if his rehab is going well enough for that to happen.

  8. Rishi January 13th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

how would jorge do that if he has two new pitchers (maybe more) to learn?

  9. Boogie Down January 13th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

ah, 2009. the year Damaso Marte learns to throw right handed…

should be a good year, indeed.

The 08 version of the game is awesome. Can’t wait for 09. Release is March 3

  12. m January 13th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Late to the party as usual. Thank you, Mr. Carroll, for that perspective on Joba & Hughes. If the two can achieve even a small share of what’s dancing in our heads, the universe will be a better place.

Can someone offer a conversion or comparison of the workload of a starter vs. that of a reliever? Am I wrong to assume that the higher number of appearances by a (setup) pitcher adds more to the workload of a reliever vs. that of a starter? And that the irregular work of a reliever also adds to the workload (getting up, warming up, back-to-back appearances, etc.).

I haven’t posted lately, but read the blog regularly to keep up with the Yankees. First of all, thank you for all your concern!

I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing some random thoughts that have been dancing around in my head.

    1. Nick, Ed, Rebecca~Thanks for fighting the good fight the other night. It was brutal.

    2. I can’t believe people are wringing their hands over this team.

    3. I STILL can’t believe people are wringing their hands over this team.

    4. Stop worrying about this team!

    5. I feel comfortable with what we’ve got. Can it be improved? Sure. Are there holes? Duh! But even if you add Manny (that would be awesome), a legit CF, and another front-end starter for the 4th slot, it guarantees nothing. It’s up to the 25 men that show up on any given day.

    6. You all know how I feel about Andy. I want him to come back because he’ll help us, and I’d like to see him bridge the two stadiums. Whatever he chooses will be the right choice because he made it. I cannot believe how people were judging and trashing him. It’s like what I saw in the hours before the CC news broke. It’s like people want to reject the players before the players reject them.

    7. Andy is not blocking any free agent pitcher out there. He’s not blocking Manny. If there is a player out there that the Yankees want, they’ll get him.

    8. If I had to choose between trading Swisher or Nady, sorry, but Nady has to go. Even though he’s so…

    9. If I were BC, I keep both as insurance for Matsui and Posada. Then I would trade Nady before the deadline. We will definitely need corner OF next season, but I don’t want to pay Boras prices for an incomplete player like Nady.

    10. It seems as if BC has done a nice job of creating a market for extra corner outfielders. I hear that Atlanta’s interested in Swisher or Nady. Meanwhile Bobby Abreu’s still out there…

    11. I’m very pleased with the Teixeira signing. Who isn’t?! Only one person ;) ! I swear, I walked around with a goofy grin for two weeks. Which quickly turned into a scowl last week when I heard Gammons’ “joke” about Leigh Teixeira. Boo! I bet he sent her yellowed flowers.

    11. Kudos to the class of the east, Atlanta (the Yankees) for rounding out their rotation very nicely with Derek Lowe (AJ). They’re trying to wrest the division back from the upstart Phillies (Rays) and the johnny-come-lately Mets (Red Sox).

    12. I can’t believe that I read that the Yankees wanted Derek Lowe and had to “settle” for AJ Burnett. Was that a Boston writer? Sherman? Was it here? That’s illogical on so many levels. Mostly because Lowe was available when we signed AJ. AJ and Lowe were going to end up with the Yankees and the Braves, or vice versa. I would’ve been fine with Lowe, but I love our signings. (Yes, Nick. Even the CC signing).

    13. Can we just assume AJ’s an injury risk? When you argue for another pitcher (like Sheets) can we just assume the risk? Or does it have to be written every time?

    14. I love the Yankees. Just saying.

kidding aside, this was cool. much more than the artist renderings and even the 3D seat selector thing on yankees.com. nice to see fans and live action.

Sounds like the article is saying Jorge got permission from the Yankees to play, that he’s recuperating well, and that he will probably DH.

  21. DurhamYankee January 13th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

In the Posada article, Posada’s father states that Hip Hip wants to play in the WBC this year. His father says he would atleast DH for Puerto Rico. Then it goes on to say that a Yankee official said Posada is injured and will not participate.

    Saucy-
“and i’ve been meaning to ask: what did i miss about Gammons Re: Leigh Teixeira ?

sorry if this has been rehashed a million times…”

Reason Tex didn’t sign with Boston was because his wife did’t like the shops on Newberry Street-Gammons underhanded attempt at pathetic humor. Gammons did apologize and said he had taken 3 extra antidepressants after hearing that Tex went to the Yankees.

    Disregard the last sentence-not true!!!!!!

  24. IRememberCelerinoSanchez January 13th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Pat, I ran the article through Babbelfish, and it sees that Jorge’s dad said he will play in the Classic, at least as a DH.

Nice to “hear” from you again! Glad you’re okay.

  30. m January 13th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

    saucy,

Scroll down to 1/7 Gammons. Very weak attempt at humor. He also says that Penny is on par with AJ (?). It was a total whitewash, revisionist history. :)

    http://audio.weei.com/baseball.....verage.htm

There’s a transcript on one of the espn writers’ blogs, but it was sanitized. You really got to listen to it.

Although, I will give Gammons credit for not tooting the Red Sox horn on his preview of the Red Sox on the Hot Stove report. Just said they’ll need big contributions from Papi, Lowell, Drew, and Beckett to make it back to the Fall Classic. As if!

“m”, good to see you posting again. I’m not sure which ‘good fight’ you refer to, but you know I always try to fight the good fight, with the occasional break when the fish start to hop out of the barrel.

I agree with you to some extent on most of your points, though my feelings about Nady differ from yours in some ways.

  33. The PeskyLefty January 13th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

That was a cool trailer. It made me contemplate shelling out $300 for a PS3, because I’d see more of the new Yankee Stadium on the game then I will ever be able to afford to in person!

mel: No problem, though I don’t know what fight you’re referring to…

    Pat:

BRISTOL — A diferencia del torneo anterior, el receptor puertorriqueño Jorge Posada afirmó el martes que sí jugará con Puerto Rico durante el Clásico Mundial de Béisbol 2009.

*Different than the tournament before, the Puerto Rican catcher Jorge Posada affirmed Tuesday that he would play for Puerto Rico during the WBC in 2009*

    Jorge Posada

    Posada

“Sí, él va a jugar. De hecho, ya firmó para jugar, y está practicando en Tampa”, dijo Jorge Posada padre a ESPNdeportes.com.

*Yes, he is going to play. He has said he is going to play and he is praciticing in Tampa”, said Jorge’s father to ESPN Deportes*

“Él sí estuvo operado del hombro, pero está recuperado”, agregó Posada. “Va a jugar como bateador designado, por lo menos. Él me lo ha dicho enfáticamente en dos o tres ocasiones”.

*He had surgery (I think), but he has recooperated, said Posada. He is going to play as a designated hitter, for now. He has told me he has done so on two or three occasions* (not sure if this is accurate)

Según informó el martes un oficial de los Yankees, Posada, quien no jugó durante el torneo del 2006 con la escuadra boricua, tampoco jugaría con Puerto Rico en la edición del Clásico 2009.

*After informing a Yankees official on Tudesday, who did not play in 2006 with ____, niether would he play with Puerto Rico in 2009* (I don’t know what “escuardra boricua” means, but I think “Escuadra” may have to do with team?

El receptor de los Mulos solamente jugó 51 partidos con 168 turnos al bate en el 2008 con los Yankees.

*The catcher of ___ (mules?) only played 51 games with 168 ABs in 2008 with the Yankees*

“Él está lesionado y no va a jugar”, dijo una fuente del equipo a ESPNdeportes.com.

*”He is ____(hurt?) and is not going to play”, said a source with the team to ESPN Deportes.*

Posada sufrió una lesión en el hombro que lo llevó dos veces a la lista de incapacitados, hasta que finalmente fue operado en julio y perdió el resto de la temporada.

*Posada suffered (an injury) that had him on the DL twice, and was finally operated on in July and lost the rest of the season.*

Según la fuente, los Yankees no le han prohibido jugar a Posada y éste podría tener la opción de jugar en el Clásico 2009 si se siente recuperado.

*As the source said, the Yankees have not prohibited Posada from playing and Posada has the option to play in the WBC in 2009 if he is feeling better*

That last paragraph doesn’t make as much sense when taken in conjunction with the others but the basic gist I got was that Posada said he’s going to play for Puerto Rico in the WBC and there’s a conversation like this:

    Posada: I’m going to play
Posada’s father: He’s going to play
    Yankees: No you’re not!
    Posada: But I feel better!
Yankees: You’re not going to play!
    Posada: But I’ve been DHing!
Yankees: Oh, all right, if you’re feeling better…

Hope that helps, otherwise, ask Brandon.

I am *so* gonna ace my Spanish exam.

  35. m January 13th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

    Should read:

After being informed a Yankee official said that Posada did not play in 2006 and niether would he play in 2009.

    I need to proofread better.

  39. PhilFranchise January 13th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Question: Now I know he had some issues in NYC during his last go around, but he is still VERY young. Anyone have thoughts on a deal (Nady/Swisher and/or pitching) for Lastings Milledge. I believe he is still only 23 and plays center. If he matures, combining him with Austin Jackson would provide some serious outfield coverage moving forward with the young athleticism needed to compliment the big bats.

  40. Nick in SF January 13th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

m: I like Nady but not because of whether he is or isn’t ‘sexy’. I like Swisher too. Keeping both would be a luxury, but at the expense of what?

Manny will sign with Yanks on Friday 2 years 52 mil.
Source: Friend of a friend of a friend….
    (I hope not)
    ———-

Jimmy, please don’t do this to me without a better source as this is the kind of notice I have been waiting for.
Now, along those lines, I don’t think we would pull that off without a nady/matsui deal already in place as it would kill our leverage.
What I mean by that is that we could have a side deal in place with Boras first and then trade those guys but if we signed Manny first I believe we lose some leverage in trading them.

Not my rumor just me dream

  43. gayle January 13th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Randy Levine on with Mike F shortly. This should be fun the blind leading the blind.

  44. m January 13th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

    Nick,

Good point, but which do you keep? Swisher will be cheaper in the long run, and is the more complete player.

I don’t see trading either (at this point) for another OF like Cameron or a pitcher who will in all likelihood be crappy.

With all those big (but aging) bats, we should be able to support Gardner’s defense in at least half the games. I would go with Aceves/Hughes for the last spot if Andy doesn’t return. They’ve proven they can pitch for the Yankees (when healthy). They’re young and cost controlled.

m: I still want to know which good fight you’re talking about. If Rebecca and Ed were involved then I know it wasn’t one of my bad fights. ;)

If you stuck a gun to my head I think I would want to keep Swisher over Nady because he can provide solid 1B play every now and again to give Tex a rest and of course play both corner outfield spots and some emergency center. But I like Nady a lot.

  53. Wave Your Hat January 13th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Am I the only one who thinks that big dark protrusion in CF (I think it is a restaurant) in the new Stadium is really ugly?

To me, it ruins the sweep of the outfield fence and I can’t help but feel when I’m in the Stadium it will feel like a thumb trying to poke me in the eye.

Plus, the notion that some of the bleacher seats will have obstructed views (at least, I guess they will) offends my political consciousness, such as it is.

I’d be interested to hear what other fans think.

  54. Tex's new best friend January 13th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

I was trying to think what the Nationals have that the Yankees could want. Milledge seems to be the only remote possibility, although it is time for the Yankees to start to find a new SS to work in the minors to come up after Jeter moves.

  60. SJ44 January 13th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

If the Yankees were to move anybody, I’m sure they would prefer to move Nady for several reasons.

He’s a Boras client and his a FA at the end of the year. Meaning, he’s hitting the market regardless of how much he likes NYC.

In this era of controlled costs, teams would actually prefer a one and done (preferably for a draft pick) player like Nady than taking on the remaining years of Swisher’s deal.

The Yankees really like Swisher. They believe his off year last year was an aberration and they think he can be a very productive player for them the next few years.

That said, I don’t think they will be giving anybody away. If a deal doesn’t materialize, they have no problems going to ST with both players and seeing how it all shakes out.

“The Yankees really like Swisher. They believe his off year last year was an aberration and they think he can be a very productive player for them the next few years.”

The White Sox overpaid and gave up a slew of good prospects for Nick and then sold low on him. Time will tell, but I think Kenny Williams played this as poorly as can be.

It’s not like Oakland is a hitter’s park. If Swisher rebounds at all, he’ll be a useful player.

    Rebecca,

definitely. He’ll be one of the better utility/bench players they’ve had in a while. He could hit for even more power than he did over previous years. His lefty/righty splits are fairly even – more power hitting lefty (which is great for yankee stadium) and better avg/OBP hitting as a righty.

He is one guy I am anxious to see in pinstripes.

X-man doesn’t walk. Set his career high with 39 last year between the Yanks and Pirates combined.

  111. Boston Dave January 13th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

He still isnt likely to see 550+ plate appearances, is he? If he gets 450 or so that’s almost 3 out of every 4 games.

The Yanks seem like they’ll use some sort of rotation with Damon, Swisher, Matsui, Gardner, Melky even if they trade Nady. But I guess Swisher is clearly your most often used RF in that scenario.

Rebecca – I guess they could already have computer ‘models’ of various types of players’ bodies on file (broken down by size, shape, lefty/righty/switch among other characteristics) and all they had to do was map a new uniform (or just the team logos and colors) onto the model. Maybe they map specific players’ faces onto the models later too? Not sure.

Again, I’m no software geek so I have incredibly little insight into exactly how they do it. I was obviously unaware of how fast they could do it.

Probably Texas would have to take on a bad contract in return, like Soriano, Carlos Lee?

I think you asked on an earlier post if Boras has ever advised an elite player to accept arbitration. He did this with Maddux for his last year as a Brave, accepting, if I remember, 16M which hampered Schuerholtz in doing other deals. Varitek was ill advised not to accept arbitration.

ATLANTA — Greg Maddux is used to setting records. Yesterday, he claimed another.

The four-time Cy Young Award winner avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to the largest one-year contract in baseball history, a $14.75million deal with the Atlanta Braves.

The previous record for a one-year contract was pitcher David Cone’s $12million deal with the New York Yankees in 2000.

Maddux became a free agent after winning 16 games last season but failed to draw much interest in the open market. He accepted the Braves’ offer of arbitration in December, binding him to the team for the 2003 season.

I read somewhere on ESPN (Olney?) that some execs in the game are dismayed with his me-first attitude of not wanting to switch positions. Just tossing that out there.

“Dish: Michael Young wants to be traded after being told the Rangers want to move him from shortstop to third base to facilitate the ascension of Elvis Andrus, Richard Durrett writes. Digestion: Many rival executives and even some agents have little sympathy for Young, and some are flat-out appalled by his response. “The guy is well-compensated by the Rangers, and the Rangers are asking him to make a change that they think is good for the team,” one executive said. “They should tell him, ‘You’re unhappy? OK, would you like to void your contract?’ And of course the answer would be no.”

Said another official: “What a joke. It’s all about him, and not about the Rangers.”

There is unanimity among executives I spoke with Monday on this point: It will be very, very difficult for Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels to arrange a suitable trade of Young because of his enormous contract. But Young’s deal is loaded with deferred money, which diminishes the real value of the contract. Here is his pay schedule:

    • 2009 salary: $11 million, with $870,000 deferred

    • 2010: $11 million, with $870,000 deferred

    • 2011: $12 million, with $2,500,000 deferred

    • 2012: $12 million, $2,500,000 deferred

    • 2013: $13 million, $2,500,000 deferred

Young’s average annual salary is $11.8 million, and the total amount of deferred money in his deal will turn out to be $13.648 million, with payments beginning in 2016.

To put this contract in perspective in the current market: Orlando Hudson is a free agent. He is not in Young’s class as a hitter but is an excellent defensive player and at 31 is a year younger than Young. So if Young is a Grade A player, Hudson is a B-plus/A-minus type of guy — and there is a perception among some executives that Hudson would be fortunate to get two years and $20 million this winter. But the real value of Young’s deal is $62 million.

To trade Young, the Rangers likely would have to eat a huge chunk of his contract and accept a deal that probably would not yield topflight prospects.

Put it this way,” one GM said. “If the Rangers offered up Michael Young for free — with that contract, I don’t think there would be any takers.”

Said another GM: “Good luck moving that contract.”

There is some question among rival executives about how much production Young would generate outside the bandbox in Arlington, where his OPS in the past three seasons has been 100 points higher than it has been on the road.

And, fair or not, the idea that Young — who has had a pristine reputation in the game — is balking at a position change raises doubts about what kind of employee he will be in the last years of his career. “I’m curious to see whether Nolan Ryan (the Rangers’ president) comes out and says something about this,” an AL GM said. “He’s all old-school, and this can’t be sitting well with him.”

Young spoke with Ryan on Monday and was in a much better frame of mind afterward, Tim Cowlishaw writes. Ryan thinks Young’s feelings were hurt, Jim Reeves writes. Jeff Wilson considers a possible market for Young. “

Rebecca, I knew that Young had a considerable contract but I did not realize it was for 16 million a year.

Looks like either Texas would have to eat some of that contract or be willing to have an unhappy player on their hands.

They paid quite a bit of Arod’s contract for the first few years he played for you guys didn’t they?

    ————————————————————

Yeah, they did, Ray. 46 million dollars of it over 5 years.

    Any interest in this deal?
Nady and his one year contract for Randy Winn and his one year deal. Winn another switch hitter with good situational stats and speed would fit nicely in the bottom third of the order, and could possibly play CF, with swisher in RF and Damon in LF.

Would like to expand this deal to obtain Sanchez another lefty pitcher with upside-Kennedy and Veras/Ramirez. Others?

Also Braves interested in Nady. Nady for Kelly Johnson. Power for a versatile OF’er/2nd baseman.

Good evening GB. I was just wondering out of curiousity if Arod had not opted out how long would Texas be required to keep paying for part of Arod’s salary?

Still think Chone Figgins is a good option in center. If they are looking at Dye, i would think we have a better shot of landing him.

  182. Yankee Trader January 13th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Actually GB7- This was the deal.

Texas will pay $67 million of the $179 million left on Rodriguez’s record $252 million, 10-year contract, and will get All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano and a player to be named.
The Rangers will wind up paying $140 million for three seasons with Rodriguez, an average of $46.7 million annually for three last-place finishes in the AL West. The Yankees will owe him $112 million over seven years.

  183. Phil January 13th, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Chone Figgins is a bad OF and really wouldn’t help much.

  184. Buddy Biancalana January 13th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

    ray-

Texas would have been paying for 2 more years or approx $16M for both years.

Responding to Jennifer (and I think Rebecca?) from the prior post, yes – 9 to Ground Zero (or whatever it’s called) is the name. I don’t recall it on HBO. I’ll tape it, but just skip over the twin towers scenes; I refuse to watch that every again. I know the 2001 WS ended badly, but boy – you don’t get any better than games 4 and 5.

Trisha, I’m not sure what show you were referring to about the top 9 position playes of all time. Perhaps you’re thinking of Prime 9? They’ve aired 4 shows thus far – one on top 9 HRs, one on top 9 CFers, one on top 9 characters and one on top 9 pitching performances. It’s a really good show – for a baseball fan, it’s nirvana (at least for this baseball fan).

That is unbelievable. I wonder how much $$$ the Rangers slipped Boras under the table as an extra incentive to opt-out.

If I was the Yankee front office I would have been tempted to insist that Boras pay the money they would have received from Texas.

I know that would never have happened….just saying. :)
