To be fair, it should be stated that the book is written third party. Pete A. was also involved. (an incentive laden contract with promises of Red Bull, Diet Coke and back-stage Springsteen passes)

Pete A. is an elegant writer and a terrific reporter. The book will be compelling and 20 percent true. Don’t assume any comments that refer to nitwits and sheep came from me unless they are surrounded by quotes.

Hmm. Seems to me that Torre got something of a big head, presuming upon his personal relationship with Cashman to insist on his own choice of pitching coach. Let’s see, in just this excerpt, we see Torre confronting and accusing Cashman – this is not papa Joe, not in any form. I don’t know how Cash bit his tongue – most GMs wouldn’t put up with this **** from their manager, no matter how friendly they were. Cash is no dummy, no fool – I’m sure he sensed some kind of power trip on Joe’s part. No wonder the relationship changed.
