Kudos to Brian Cashman, seems top tier to me: Chop-n-Change (http://mvn.com/chopnchange/2009/01/best-gms-in-baseball.html) ranks Cash as a second tier GM. River Avenue Blues (http://riveraveblues.com/2009/01/cashman-a-second-tier-gm-7245/) points out that Cash has "more division titles (9 to 6) and World Titles (3 to 2) as the First Tier GMs combined." This off season Cash goes out and gets the best available position player (legitimate need at 1B plugged); two best available starting pitchers (legitimate need at front of rotation plugged); and then he brings back Andy (rotation depth addressed). Regardless of the cash Cash is given to work with, it still takes skill to sign these guys and to meet roster needs.

YankeeRay
January 26th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Still 1 more move left boys and girls.
Pettite signing is like the baptism in the Godfather. Now we can settle all family business.
In 1 swift move we trade Nady and Matsui and sign Manny. Defer his 09 salary.
Gammons and nation are devastated. Torre and Dodgers the same and left to sign Abreu.
Manny and Arod form a great Yankee friendship and rekindle murderers row with Tex.
Nation booing Tex, Arod and Manny in succession, Priceless.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I'm applauding this post. Makes perfect sense to me.

In the end, when pettitte realized he was not getting an offer that even matched the yanks from any other team or maybe even no other offers at all, he realized he wanted to come back to the yanks. I dont care as long as he came back but please, please do not get on stage and proceed to blatantly lie to our faces as i THINK he has done that enough to us over the past year. Just say it was a difficult off season but now its over and your happy your back. if they ask about the off season - you can say it was a private matter or i just didnt have my head on straight for a little bit or i was going through a rough time handling a pay cut. Nothing about in the end, i realized i wanted to be a yankee again and the paycut did not matter to me anymore - people will see right through that comment.

OK now I can see the reasoning behind some folks casting Pettitte off for whatever reason.

I can also see reasoning that he should have been offered far more than the original $10M guaranteed contract.

My thoughts were a fair guaranteed amount he'd still get even if he faltered, with reachable incentives for innings & wins, but the amounts were different. Honestly I have no strong opinion on the amounts especially now that he's signed. I haven't even read the details yet. If both sides think its fair with the incentives, then I guess its fair.

Whatever anyone's opinion was ... well ... whatever.

So .... has anybody who cast him off a few weeks ago on any kind of moral grounds find themselves suddenly endorsing his return?

Anyone who insisted he was worth far more than the 'insulting' $10M guaranteed offer find themselves saying he got a good deal now?

Anyone who blasted his struggles down the stretch in '08 find themselves calling him a consummate gamer again?

etc, etc, etc ... ???
