SNY was nice enough to ask me to pop on their Wheelhouse show yesterday. Here’s the clip.

Nice job, Pete. I’m glad to see that you don’t use the same cell phone as Brian “tin can” Cashman. :P

  2. Jeff January 27th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

    Good stuff Pete

Good interview Pete. Snazzy suit and the combo in the pic.

I think despite everybody not being buddy buddy with one another in the clubhouse, which rarely any winning Yankee team was, these guys are real competitors. IMO, the addition of Tex and CC, more so than Burnett, give this club a competitive edge.
Also, these guys bring a youthful vibe into this clubhouse. I don’t have comparison stats, but this has to be up there with one of the youngest Yankee teams of this decade.

    tie*

Since Joe fired the first shot, I think we might hear so former players taking shots back at him. This has the potential to get very ugly.

“Since Joe fired the first shot, I think we might hear so former players taking shots back at him. This has the potential to get very ugly.”

I don’t think any player would dare take a shot at Joe, regardless of what was said. He is still Joe Torre, despite recent events. The only player that could justify taking a shot at him would be A-Rod, and, he knows, that would just cause a bigger media stir.

My question is…have we forgotten about Madonna? Let’s hope she has kept our prize 3B in shape during the offseason :)

    oops, from previous thread:

randy, semi-serious question here: the way you laid things out suggests that someone like Joe Torre – high-caliber player and longtime manager with an enormous wealth of baseball knowledge – should never be fired. But that can’t be right. Should he have been named Manager-for-Life or something?

Just because you disrespect the ownership and management, isn’t it possible that Torre, despite all the great qualities he brought to the team, had just been there long enough and both sides needed a fresh start?

  8. Doreen January 27th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

I think ARod’s moved on from Madonna. He’d been linked with Kate Hudson recently, I believe. :)

Spot on Pete. Verducci and Torre want to make money that’s all. Who’d want to buy a book about the Yankees without any A-Rod trashing? And how can anyone really think teammates are calling a guy with A-Rod’s work ethic “A-Fraud” without joking?

  10. JoeyA January 27th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Hudson! That’s what I call an upgrade! I think thats a bigger upgrade that our starting rotation from 08 to 09.

I would gladly pay the extra cash the New Stadium tix will demand if someone can assure me Kate will be in attendance.

I am not even referring to current Yankees. I am referring to retired players.

Nice appearance, Pete, but still more of the same dead horses. I do understand that the media has to manufacuture stories and keep legs on them to milk ratings and sell papers, but enough is enough.

I’m looking forward to your reporting once ST starts. Thanks.

  13. JoeyA January 27th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

    Jennifer-
    Oh. Gotcha

Well in that case, who do you have in mind that you ca see taking a shot at Joe?

Pavano? Maybe Kevin Brown will blame Joe for breaking his hand.

  14. Arodien January 27th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

    Peter great interview!
As a long time Torre defender and fan I am pissed with him! He is not the SAINT JOE anymore! He is a sour old guy who seeks money and vitriol out of his own problems!
Great to see him in LA ! Eventhough i am not the greatest fan of Joe Girardi at least he is very confidential with his club house ( to a lot people too confidential) . Lets say its true that they used to Call A-Rod an A-fraud , that does not have to go out on the public. If i was a player under Torre now I would try to avoid him because anything i say to him could be in a book the next time he is desperate for money!

Good Riddance Brian Cashman, After this week no Yankee fan will ever miss him even though he is without doubt one of the greatest manager of all time BECAUSE HE IS A PHONY!

  15. Fran January 27th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Doreen – it depends what you read. This mornings NY Daily News gossip page had ARod spending last week-end at the Atlantis in Paradise Island sitting around with Bill Clinton for over an hour. The NY Post Page 6 gossip had Alex in the Hamptons with Madonna last week-end. I find it hard to believe that he could be in 2 places at the same time!

  16. Doreen January 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

    Fran -

I take all such reports with a grain of salt. Well, a box of salt, actually.

  17. Fran January 27th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

    Doreen – Agreed!

Jeff Nelson maybe? Or Chuck, considering what was said about him.

  19. dave January 27th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Good job pete – althought i dont think this deal will ever look like andy won out even if he meets all the incentives. A 10 mil deal guaranteed sounds better than a 5.5 mil with up to 12 mil in incentives any day of the week. Now, he has to sing for his supper which he will likely do but there is no guarantees for a 37 year old pitcher.

Also, i think that when we reflect back on this, this may be considered cashman’s first successful off season meaning all the moves will work out more than they wont or at the very least the large majority of them. We have gone from one of the worst looking yankee teams going into the season last year to one of the best looking yankee clubs going in this season. That is not easy to do as it required three things.

One, a ton of money coming off the payroll. Two, a great crop of free agents. Three, smart, aggressive spending from us with little spending around the rest of the league. Somehow, with the market in recession, the yanks resources, a little bit of luck and cash’s new desire to prove his worth after his new contract, we managed to get all three. Obviously, the ultimate worth of this off season can only be judged by the one thing the yankee organization and their fans really care about – winning the world series. Therefore, we just have to wait and see.

But regardless of whether or not the yanks win it all, cashman made meaningful, outstanding acquisitions this off-season most of which probably will not fail and therefore, this will likely be considered the best off-season since cash has taken over the full job of GM and likely our best off season since the 90s.

I have full confidence in this team as it is not only strong but has the capacity to overcome injury- guys like swisher and aceves being kept out of the lineup and rotation respectively is a huge boost for the team that has injuries every single season without fail. Melancon’s ability to jump into the bullpen at almost any point from the farm, maintains one of our best arms out of the pen this year as relief pitching “depth.” I’d say this is a good spot for a team that usually ends up severely lacking in depth at some point during each season. And the fact that this club is playing at pretty much the same rate as the 2008 club that won 89 games, I would say that is petty good.

A friend emailed me a picture of Jeter and Alex together in the Bahamas this weekend with the caption “They don’t look like they hate each other. Did Alex stalk Jeter to Paradise Island? LOL”
