Scott Boras knew that Teixeira would be his No. 1 sought after client but never knew Manny would be a tough sell.

ANSKY, i just wonder if the annual amount doesn't mean as much as # of years and everyone is portraying him as a greedy bass turd.

would he take 3/70 or even 3 years and less than $70M?

saucY: Of course Manny is legitimately looking for 3 or 4 years to persue some career milesones.

Four more years.
Another $100 million.
Two $100M+ contracts in the same career.
Rub Boston's nose in his doo-doo pile of an attitude.

Were you asking about statistical baseball milestones? Sure ... IMO he'd want to increase his career stats enough to demand an additional year or two at even more money per year.

Torre's first meeting with co-author Tom Verducci was in spring training of 2007.
A betting person says a book discussion would still be on hold if the Steinbrenner's had offered Torre a 2-3 year deal with no strings or incentives attached last year.
This is clear cut sour grapes.

"Since the team that he quit on is the Sawx the Yankees should sign him to be the mascot let him clown around and taunt to his hearts content."

What you're missing is that the "quitting" was not about the Red Sox. It was about his contract. He was facing 2 years and $40M and his new agent told him he could get 4 and $100M. His agent was wrong and Ramirez now stands a 50/50 shot of not even matching the 2/$40M he walked out on.
Chances are better than 50/50 he'll be unhappy with the contract he gets. Given the 5 year old in a 37 year old body he's proven to be, I don't want to be the team that signs him to a deal he's not going to like.

I heard in an interview the other day that the Dodgers stance was you had to keep manny hungry,That is why they will not go over 2 years.Keeping him playing for another contract is the only way they see keeping manny from being manny

Throwing money at Manny is nuts right now. The way the market has developed a team could probably get two decent bats for less once the pride swallowing begins. He's good, and a team that is right on the cusp could go over the top with Manny, but it would have to be a team that just needed more pop in the middle of the lineup.

Still, over paying for a guy because you're worried he'll be a baby if you don't is crazy. I can't really form an opinion on him. On the one hand he seems to have fun playing and gets along with his team mates (except the unusually ugly, I'm looking at you Youkilis). People have said he works very hard to hit as well as he does. On the other hand he's a clown that has publicly quit on his team before and is bad on defense. Since the team that he quit on is the Sawx the Yankees should sign him to be the mascot let him clown around and taunt to his hearts content.

of course citibank is saying its not backing out, but apparently they are working out the details 'just in case'

theres no way to stop that train now, but i see the deal being 'amended' before the next time citi has to go hat in hand for more TARP money, which will probably be in the next 2 weeks or so.

ill bet its cut down to a 3 or 4 yr agreement which will give the mets time to figure out what to do.
