Two days of silence

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Feb 07, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Selena Roberts is on the MLB Network right now, answering questions from Bob Costas about the SI story. Among other things, she said that she gave A-Rod every opportunity to refute the story and traveled to Miami to talk with him in person on Thursday.

Thursday.

That means Rodriguez knew that SI had uncovered his positive test two days ago. Yet The Journal News has learned the Yankees knew nothing about the story until this morning because Rodriguez did not call them to let them know what was coming.

Why didn’t he let the Yankees know? No one knows for sure. But it’s hardly a stretch to think he wasn’t interested in answering the obvious questions that everyone – you, me and surely Yankees officials – would want answered.

Update: Roberts just said there are no other names of players in the upcoming magazine story. She said she uncovered this information while working on a profile/feature on Rodriguez. She noted, correctly, that depending on how the California court case works out, the other 103 names very well might be made public in the future anyway.

How do you know he didn’t let the yankees know, and how do you know the yanks didn’t know already? this is some shotty reporting

  2. Terry from NH February 7th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

With all the great things that have happened this offseason, this story puts a wrench on things and a sick feeling in my stomach. It’s not fair that no other names are mentioned or leaked so it seems to me that Arod is a lightning Arod for the media and all Yankee Haters. If this is true then it’s just another distracting issue for the Yanks in the upcoming season.

  3. Scared of the Wall February 7th, 2009 at 2:39 pm

A-rod’s clearly trying to protect his own ass. Why does it matter anyway? Not as if the Yankees would come out with a press release saying “A-Rod tested positive for steroids in 2003.”

  4. Tom February 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

    Sam, thanks and good work.

  5. RSM February 7th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

    Carried over from last thread…

I may be alone here, but this mess may actually finally endear me to Arod. Why? Because it is ridiculous that out of 103 names, only his is leaked, and it’s 6 years later. I feel his insecurities and poor social skills bring much of the negative attention heaped on him generally, but the constant witch hunt is getting out of hand. The guy just can’t catch a break. So many clichés work here, but the one I’m most reminded of is, “It’s lonely at the top”.

Do any of you guys actually buy into this steroid crap anyway? Let me lesson you. I played in high school and a little in college, for a no-name school, and plenty of guys were juiced. Here’s the best part, that was in the EIGHTIES!!! Now knowing that, do you really think guys playing professionally, with millions of dollars at stake, at a time when nobody checked or cared, weren’t juiced? And do you really believe that coaches and owners didn’t know? Frankly, if they didn’t they were foolish. Take your heads out of the sand. Just assume that everyone juiced (batters AND pitchers) from the late eighties until about 5 years ago, and let’s move on already. This story is stale.

    Rant over.

  6. Scared of the Wall February 7th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

“She said she uncovered this information while working on a profile/feature on Rodriguez.”

“Profile/feature” aka a book that she hopes will be a bestseller so she can make lots of money. That’s why she could care less about the other 103 names. Credit it to her for figuring this out, but she has an agenda.

  7. Steve February 7th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

This guy is a curse…How great would it be if he was a Red Sox and we the Yankee fans were rooting against him. A dream that will never come true. How appropiate is the A-Fraud comment now. He is all about me, his ego, his reputation and desire to be the greatest of all time. Now he will just be another Bonds/McGuire/Sosa. How sad, and how naive of us all to not be expecting this. He is the perfect storm for steriod use in his nuerotic tendencies. We should have all see this coming. MLB needs to be able to support teams in matters like this and get contracts voided. This guy is going to earn 1/2 a billion dollars and e cheated! Life long Yankee fan who is really getting fed up with MLB. I’ll boo A-rod this year from my $300 seats and $10 hot dogs I pay to support his lifestyle. Screw off A-rod.

  8. corsari February 7th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

He is gonna need Boras more than ever before. It’s a sad, sad day.

  9. jennifer February 7th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

I don’t care I want the other 103 names. Let them all out. It is total bs that Alex is singled out.

  10. Ed - spring training can't start soon enough February 7th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

jennifer: agreed. If A-Rod really did took “roids” then why he still can’t hit in the postseason during the last 4 years? Like Griffey, A-Rod has natural talent too. Speaking of Griffey, I would seriously be shocked if he’s on the list too.

  11. ACYanks February 7th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

“She noted, correctly, that depending on how the California court case works out, the other 103 names very well might be made public in the future anyway.”

That makes it ok for everyone involved then, I guess.

  12. canes February 7th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

So im a student at the University of Miami, he just donated a boatload of money to remodel our baseball stadium. he’s been working out here for the past few weeks with the baseball team at the new Alex Rodriguez Park here on campus. its going to be very interesting later this month. there is an opening ceremony/banquet that Alex will be attending thats somewhat open to the public, tickets are 75 dollars. hes hiding out here on campus somewhere i should find him and throw my arod jersey in his face. hes just another mcgwire and sosa

  13. AROD fan February 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Just tuning in now after alert from a friend, so only made it through a few comments, but this one nailed it:
    —–

Pat: In a strange way, the steroids issue could become the union busting thing owners have tried to accomplish for years.
wow, great point. hadn’t thought of that. a strike now in the post-roid years would really be a killer. And in hindsight, they might not have ever recovered from 1994-95 if not for juice.
    ———-
EXACTLY!! That is exactly what is going on here and we are all just playing right into MLB’s hands. What the union needs to do now is have every single player in the entire union say WE HAVE ALL DONE STERIODS. My guess is actually that many of them didn’t do them, or they did them only for brief stints WHEN IT WAS REQUESTED BY SOME COACH OR TRAINER.

That is not the point. The point is, this can’t be used as a labor issue. These guys, on steriods or not, still WORKED HARD AND LONG for MLB. They still PRODUCE mlb. There would be no mlb without them. Ok, i better stop ranting.

  14. tipper February 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

i hope AROD sues her for all shes got!
More than half of the league was on steroids but AROD is targeted because hes AROD!

  15. Ron Burgandy February 7th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Yet The Journal News has learned the Yankees knew nothing about the story until this morning because Rodriguez did not call them to let them know what was coming.
Why didn’t he let the Yankees know? No one knows for sure.
    ————————————————

    You stay classy!

  16. AROD fan February 7th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Griffey is undoubtedly on the list, but that will never be reported because he’s terrible now. MLB doesn’t want you to know what steroids really do to you.

Which is why the entire list will never be reported. it will be a list full of miguel cairo’s.

  18. vb03 February 7th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

The truth will probably be the best way to go for A-Rod in this case. Any cover-ups and further denials will send him down the Clemens Highway to Oblivion, or even worse, jail.

I won’t go as far as to say they should void his contract, but the team should put themselves in a position to protect themselves, at least for the home run clauses they put in there. That stipulation promoted a personal goal and should have never been in there in the first place.

  19. AROD fan February 7th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

  20. Tantron Willoughby February 7th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

I have been preaching all along that A-Roid has been a curse for the NYY and now he has fulfilled his destiny as a fraud. Now, as Yankee fans, we will have to endure the slings and arrows of the Saux fans as we deservedly take ther abuse. A-Roid is analogous to Gordon Gekko, “juice is good, for lack of a better word, juicing is good…..” Now an asterisk will have to be place next to his home run record, and guess what, Yankee fans will have to live with his disgrace?

  21. DFox February 7th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

    “Re: Arod’s silence

    =GUILTY”

Come on, can’t you give him a chance? Who knows… Maybe he’s trying to gather some evidence HE has that shows he isn’t guilty. You never known.

  22. tipper February 7th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

I bet these guys are on the list:
    Brosius (for sure).
    Williams,
    Tino,
    Oneil,
    JETER!

then you will know what being a “real yankee” means… arod was just following tradition.

  23. CaptainsCorner February 7th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

This information is very upsetting. But Selena Roberts is an idiot if she thought that Arod was just going to say yes it is true. She is lucky that Arod didn’t throw her out of the room. No player would admit to anything without talking to their lawyer/agent first. She is just upset and waiting to get paid on this. It is upsetting as a fan that not only he did this(if it is true) but now once again the team will have to deal with it this year. Also that he will be a shell of himself as far as performing on the field this year. Every year it is something. Last year Pettitte. Also where are all of the 100 names? Where is Ortiz, Manny, Schilling maybe even Pujols?!! Maybe the Soxs should get investigated on this issue. It just so happened that the Byrd story came out just before he was supposed to pitch against them…now this right before spring training. Just disgusting…

  24. Ron BurgandyRob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption February 7th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

The clowns come out of the woodwork with stories like these, I think i’m going to be done for the day. Most of the players in sports have thought about it or done it, they’re not perfect. It’s sad but the people who are here all season will be here once games start and we’ll be just as into it as ever. Steroids is a sad fact, but a fact none the less and like Randy I said since the majority of people were doing it the field was in a perverted way level. (not to misquote you Randy)

Have fun with the insanity. THE SKY IS FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING OMGZ A-ROID ISN’T A SUPERHERO! HE DIDN’T LIVE UP TO MY IMPOSSIBLE STANDARDS FOR PEOPLE ON TV!

  25. AROD fan February 7th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Manny is next, because Manny is precisely the point. Why are we suddenly releasing this evidence, four years later? hmm….

because fans will wnat to know why the scariest hitter in baseball isn’t signed by spring training? they’ll wonder why only one team made an offer?

  26. tipper February 7th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

you’re a moron if you think AROD will let this get to him. He’s been through hell already (b/c of idiot fans), this is nothing.

60 homeruns, 200 rbis while being tested every week to shut everyone up.

  27. Tom February 7th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

MLB’s responce to the A-Rod allegations:

“We are disturbed by the allegations contained in the Sports Illustrated news story which was posted online this morning. Because the survey testing that took place in 2003 was intended to be non-disciplinary and anonymous, we can not make any comment on the accuracy of this report as it pertains to the player named.

“Based on the results of the 2003 tests, Major League Baseball was able to institute a mandatory random-testing program with penalties in 2004. Major League Baseball and the Players Association have improved the drug testing program on several occasions so that it is now the toughest program in professional sports. The program bans stimulants, such as amphetamines, as well as steroids.

“Any allegation of tipping that took place under prior iterations of the program is of grave concern to Major League Baseball, as such behavior would constitute a serious breach of our agreement.

“Under Commissioner Selig’s leadership, Major League Baseball remains fully committed to the elimination of the use of performance enhancing substances from baseball. As the Commissioner has said, we will continue to do everything within our power to eliminate the use of such drugs and to protect the integrity of the program.”

  28. Tantron Willoughby February 7th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

What about Mark Texeira? The disgrace Aroid has forced upon MLB, the NYY and the fans has made me want to throw out my MLB baseball package and pick up a membership to the Audobon Society.

  29. Tennore February 7th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

IMHO, if he comes clean RIGHT AWAY, with the WHOLE truth, it will probably just blow over. In a strange way, if he somehow manages to damage control in the right way, he could actually turn it into a positive and shed the “A-fraud” label. It remains to be seen at this point but if he screws it up now, it may turn out to be worse than Giambi.

  30. RSM February 7th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

    Ed,

You would be shocked if Griffey was on the list? Open your eyes friend. Just looking at Griffey’s physique and injury history, I can guarantee he’s been juiced. I hope you were being sarcastic.

It continues to amaze me how naive people are on this subject. I don’t purport to be an expert, but as someone who was seriously into body building and sports during the 80′s and early 90′s, was around plenty of guys who juiced, and is currently a physician, I will tell you that I can walk into a gym and immediately pick out who is using steroids. It’s faily obvious to people with any knowledge of the stuff. That said, Griffey has juiced.

  31. AROD fan February 7th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

For y’all who think that “A-ROID ISN’T A SUPERHERO” now, what planet are you on?

If he weren’t a superhero then the headline this morning would have read CODY RANSOM TESTED POSITIVE FOR STERIODS IN 2003!! No one knows who else was on the 100 name list, but it is suspected that RUIS SOJO was on the list too!

  32. AROD fan February 7th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

  33. m February 7th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Any chance that Alex didn’t know the topic of the interview? What do you say, “Hey, this is Selena Roberts. I want to talk about your name being on a list of test-positive players”?

  34. tipper February 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

AROD won’t surrender! Why should he? So some tramp can make money off him?

  35. SJ44 February 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Costas is a breath of fresh air on MLB Network. Finally, someone with a logical and not hysterical take on this entire issue.

If its true that Gene Orza was tipping off players on testing, he has to resign. For that matter, so do Selig and Fehr.

No matter what side you are on this issue, everybody failed here. When everybody failed, everybody has to go.

The ENTIRE sport needs new leadership. The drug program is a joke. No confidentiality=no program.

Players, owners, union members, management members, EVERYBODY is at fault. At the top though, Selig, Fehr and Orza need to go. They have failed their constituancies in a big, big way.

  36. gayle February 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Here is a question just heard TJ Quinn said that the names and the results of the players that tested posiive in2003 were made available afer the decifered the code of ananimity to BOTH MLB PLayers Union and MLB Baseball.

If that is in fact the case might it be that the Yankees already knew that he had tested positive in 2003?? Thus the positive test might not be a suprise to them but what be a surpise is that the story actually came out.

    BREAKING NEWS!!!

The Beatles took many performance enhancing drugs around the time Sgt. Pepper was recorded!

PED’s are now part of sports. I am not so sure they need to be condemned as much and users vilified to this extent. In fact, if there were no health risks at all, couldn’t steroids/HGH be seen as progress in sports medicine?

  41. die selig February 7th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

its sad that baseball crucifies its own players. not just regular players either, hall of famers…

  42. E-Man February 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

“Selig, Fehr and Orza need to go. They have failed their constituancies in a big, big way.”

That’s nice in theory but how would that even work. I’m sure most of the owners and GMs are in the same tank too.

  43. DFox February 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I love how people just start saying “he should come clean” before we’ve even heard from him. Would it seriously shock anyone if ALEX RODRIGUEZ was being accused of something he didn’t actually do? If that was the case, there’s so many people in baseball and in general that dislike him it would be difficult to narrow down the list of people who might have reported this.

But I think you will find out if it’s really true. If it is, hopefully he admits it. Now, if it isn’t, and he says that, I would think he’d be able to back it up with physical evidence. When you’re worth a few hundred million dollars and are most likely going to go down as the greatest player in baseball history, you don’t leave something like MLBs crappy drug testing policy. So, if he actually did not take steroids, I would have to believe he had routine PRIVATE testing done on himself just in case anything like this ever came up. Again, this is just a case, but him and Boras are smart, and they know he is a constant target, so it would only make sense to do this.

  44. GreenBeret7 February 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Nobody knows whether Rodriguez has called the Yankees, the Union, Boras or anybody else about getting ambushed by this slug. It’s not even her first or secondshot at rodriguez.

  45. Scared of the Wall February 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

“Any allegation of tipping that took place under prior iterations of the program is of grave concern to Major League Baseball, as such behavior would constitute a serious breach of our agreement.

For all the people trying to downplay the confidentiality breach… this has serious legal ramifications and will likely affect the League’s relationship with the MLBPA.

As SJ said, everybody involved in this is at fault, from Orza to Selig to the players. Hopefully this mess will FINALLY implement change within baseball. Unfortunately baseball had to get to this point, but something should have been done at least 20 years ago to prevent steroid usage from tainting the game.

  46. miggs February 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

    WOW

All I can say is WOW

I got up this morning and went to the mall and did some shopping, then watched my Georgetown Hoyas lose a heartbreaker in OT. I finally went online and…BAM front page of ESPN.com. Then I came on Lohud. Checked out SI.

This is going to be a big mess. This makes Torre’s book basically insignificant.

Arod may be done. His psyche is so fragile. Can you imagine road games for this guy? Hundreds of signs saying “A Fraud” or “A Roid”, pictures of needles.

Unbelievable. Spring training is going to be a circus. Congrats Joe T, you’re off the hook.

Damn I guess Canseco was right after all…

  53. Doreen February 7th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

I am aware of Selena Roberts’ history in reporting on Rodriguez. And clearly, her agenda here was researching a book on him and wow, wasn’t she lucky to get this information.

But – it is what it is. It goes beyond her agenda and fretting about that really is not the issue. The issue now is what happens going forward. How do ARod and the Yankees deal with this going forward?

And if we were aghast that Carl Pavano didn’t tell the Yankees about his car accident, we can’t give ARod a pass for not immediately alerting his bosses, the people who pay him, who give him the opportunity to play, to this “situation.”

  54. AROD > SKANK February 7th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

it’s obvious ortiz is a roider. he’s shown similary symptoms of past roiders:

    - chronic ailments/injuries
    - slow bat (he can’t hit the inside pitch)
    - fat head
    - depression

  55. miggs February 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

If his name is out, I want the other 103. Not that it matters anyway.

And how do FOUR people leak the news? FOUR? Are you kidding me? And none of the four are willing to put their name behind it?

NO WAY any of the leaks are MLB. They don’t want this negative press. All the leaks were from the government. Guaranteed.

If I was A Rod I’d be burning up Donald Fehr’s cell wanting some sort of explanation.

  57. pat February 7th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Until the other 103 names are known, fans should be careful on how they view their favorite team, player and who they choose to boo. That’s the sad part to me. This goes beyond A-Rod.

    Here’s my question.

If the tests taken in 2003 were supposed to be confidential and anonymous than how were they ever id’d as Arod’s?

To me that’s about the only way he gets out of this.

If Selig and the testing group come out and say there is no way they could know it was Arod’s since once the test was taken, the player’s name was anonymous and was just like a random generated number on a vial or something.

I’m just curious how names were ever named since this phase of the testing was under the guise of anonymity and not used to out/suspend players.

Obviously as Yankee fans, this story has a big effect on us.

But every baseball fan should be upset by all that came out in this story. Unfairly so, MLB gets held up to a higher standard when it comes to PEDs by the media and this is going to be a huge black eye for the game. Another great player using PEDS plus the league tipping him off about tests. The mainstream media is just going to run rampant with this.

Just an awful day for baseball fans, not just Yankee fans.

it comes out this morning that arod failed a sterroid test. since then sj has attacked the reporter several times, predicted a cant-miss players strike, then cancelled it and he’s called for everybody in mlb and mlbpa to resign.

When will this end! What is the value of the never ending finger pointing and outing. From Torre’s “history” book to grand jury leaks to anonymous tests revealed, the process has become as dirty as the “crimes”. This is sick, sad, sorry and useless. The level of attention these issues get when compared to real issues has become shameful. We are all complicit. I enjoy sports and journalism, but at his point much of the “sports news” is neither. That is not to say the issue doesn’t need to be covered but unfortunately we seem to be unable to cover it with any real purpose or to move on when that purpose is met.

    G. Love:

    Now, that’s an excellent question!
Alex and the Union have a valid gripe here. If this was to be anonymous, the samples should absolutely have been assigned random numbers without the ability to identify which sample came from which player. I smell legal action here.

  78. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 7th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Yeah, it really doesn’t matter how it was released, in the grand scheme of things now. Just not surprising it was Selena Roberts.

I just found it somewhat offensive being called clueless for an opinion on someone that wasn’t based on me being clueless about it.

IF Alex, didn’t tell the Yankees, he should have. There was no way that she was going to sit on that, after all. This is her 15 minutes of fame. That she sat on it for 24 hours is rather amazing, lol.

GB7 – so thats why they have to trick you into taking a Sports Illustrated Subscription these days, by offering it as a “free gift” with something? It was the gift that kept on giving me cat litter box lining as it turned out, lol.

The question I have is, if list isn’t supposed to exist by the rules set in place(i.e agreed anonymous testing) for it to exist in the first place, why does it still exist?

  79. Tom February 7th, 2009 at 3:29 pm

That’s interesting, Tom. Why would they have to file paperwork to destroy something that was agreed on for them to be able to have to tests done in the first place?

Seems like a *very* bad case of *someone* dropping the ball badly – if that’s the case though.

  88. SJ44 February 7th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Here is the box Arod is in right now…..

He can’t say ANYTHING about this due to the pending case in the California Supreme Court.

If the Union prevails with the case in California (which I think is the likely result), he STILL can’t talk specifically about the positive test because it could open the door for ALL the names to be leaked.

If the Union loses the case and all the names come out, he has to still be careful about what he says in case the government is looking at possibly trying to get him to roll on other people.

I think this information got leaked by somebody on the government side in advance of them losing the case at the Supreme Court.

They “nail” him, lose the case, and they believe its a “win” for them.

Kind of sad but, that’s how the government operates sometimes in cases such as this.

Bad deal all around for him and it makes it even harder to explain himself given the restrictions he will have on what he can say.

Classic example of being “put in a box” by the government.

  89. Tom February 7th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Exactly, GB. How could MLB and the MLPA say they were anonymous?

  90. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 7th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

If the name is coded, then, it’s not anonymous.

    *********************************************************
    I would agree.

A number being linked to a name anywhere (regardless of if its held separately or not) is not anonymous.

  91. Doreen February 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

But anonymous should be anonymous. Why were there even coded names? Like no one has ever wanted to break a code just for the fun of it even, much less for a valid reason. Leaves too much to chance.

I’m re-watching the interview — Selena Roberts said finding the other 103 names will be a lot of work for other journalists. So, she’s clearly not interested in the bigger story. She got what she needed. She said she heard other names but did not do any work with regard to those.

How did the 4 sources know she wanted the information? Why did they seek her out? Or did she seek them out? She said the sources wanted the truth to be told. How did they know anyone was looking for it with regard to ARod?

  92. Betsy February 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

How about this, Sam? His attorneys told him to keep quiet?

  93. SJ44 February 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

The samples were coded. However, someone broke the code.

Unclear who that “someone” was but, that’s how the media matched the names with the samples.

  94. PAT M. February 7th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

  95. Doreen February 7th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Regarding ARod’s response to Selena Roberts – she had been trying to reach him. It is possible that ARod knew that and asked someone how to respond if she did catch up with him. For what that’s worth.

  96. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 7th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

She’s writing a book on him, that’s why. Not a flattering one either, from what I can gather.

She definitely struck the jackpot. :)

  97. SJ44 February 7th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

    Doreen,

The answer is easy. The government, feeling they will probably lose the case in California, and knowing she was writing a book on Arod, wanted to get his name out that he flunked a test. So, they gave it up, IMO.

This way, if they lose, they got what they wanted. They torched another big name.

That’s how you get put in a box by the government.

This goes WAY beyond OBP, sabermetrics, hitting in the clutch, etc.

This is what you deal with everyday in the criminal system. This kind of lawlessness from the side of the government; this kind of “we have no idea how this stuff got out” BS.

Its why, with easy passing day, we learn the genius of Derek Jeter. High profile life, low profile scrutiny.

I tip my cap to him everyday for being above this sleaze.

Its unfortunate but, this is something Arod is going to have to deal with this year.

More importantly though, and this will upset everybody who wants “answers” from him, he can’t say anything until the government stops investigating baseball players.

He can’t put himself in a position, a la Clemens or Bonds, where his words can be used against him for a possible indictment.

I have a feeling he’s going to get called before a grand jury now. Perhaps the one in DC seated for the Clemens Case.

My advice if called would be, “go in, tell the truth, and be prepared to have your grand jury testimony leaked, in violation of the law”.

That seems to be the way the government is rolling on this stuff these days.

  98. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 7th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

“The samples were coded. However, someone broke the code.

Unclear who that “someone” was but, that’s how the media matched the names with the samples.”

I still find it hard to equate coded with anonymous. It just doesn’t jive.

Code – a system used for brevity or secrecy of communication, in which arbitrarily chosen words, letters, or symbols are assigned definite meanings.

Anonymous – lacking individuality, unique character, or distinction.

In fact they seem a bit conflicting, lol.

Oh well, time to go vacuum and do some housework, I guess.

  99. Doreen February 7th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

    SJ44 -

Seems to be sadly true, what you say.

I wondered what the repercussion of the judge not admitting certain evidence in Bonds’ case was going to be. Never, ever, did I imagine this.

  100. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother February 7th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

OK this might be long – and I don’t usually do long – but so what…
Most of you who are defending AROD would be eating this story up if he were a RS. End that.

Steroids have been around in one form or another since the early 80′s that I am aware of. Nowadays they just are more designer, less crude. There are now masking agents. There are tip-offs and other means of cheating the testing program. By and large the testing program is a joke. It never quite catches up to the designers. I am half surprised anyone gets caught actually.

If baseball can ban a player for a lifetime for gambling, it can do the same with PED’s, and should. I know I would like to see a lawsuit by the “failed” players that tried to do it clean that didn’t make it to the bigs or get that huge contract because someone else with equal or less talent did make it because they cheated. I don’t know who you would go after in a case like this though, so it will never happen. Just dreaming a bit here I guess.

But if MLB or the union are serious about stopping PED usage, testing should be frequent and the results made public if such is lawful. Lifetime ban for users in any case. Problem is neither side is that serious. Both sides have let a sore spot fester without effectively treating it and now it’s grown into an ugly ulcer. And incredibly there are still deniers and apologists.

And for those of you who say differently about this, let me ask you this…
Wouldn’t you like to see every member of our house and senate and any other legislative branch that has the ability to tax us and pass laws over us held to the same set of standards? Why are tax cheats in government still re-elected or given promotions? It will only change if the voters (or fans in our case) demand that it does. And fans that say “so what?” or “why only attack our guy?” are not solving the problem. They are perpetuating it.
Baseball does not have to be that way. If baseball wants to be perceived as having integrity, then it needs to HAVE integrity. The double-speak and fraud from the players, the union, and management turns my stomach. Either fix it or lift the ban on it. Period. If they choose the latter though they will lose one fan I know of – me.

What else can they say?! I wonder if they can have those homerun bonuses taken out of the contract if they wanted to?! This is going to be a very weird topic for them to address…starting this week at spring training. Very convenient for whoever let this story get out.

I cannot write in words how sick and tired of these reports I am! It seems to me that if you don’t know by now that most likely most MLB(and other professional sports players)Have used some type of enhancement drug, Then you need to get your head out of the sand!

A Rod will get a lot of deserved criticism for this,But … seeing It’s A Rod,He’ll get much more undeserved Bashing then the former.

Out of over a hundred names she uses his? Guess it’s more about selling your product then it is about getting to any Truths.

  106. miggs February 7th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Listening to Selena Roberts with Costas its almost comical.

She didn’t even TRY and get any other names. If these “sources” had A Rod’s name, they had to have everyone else’s. Was A Rod the only big name? No way.

Its sad she’s going to get rich from this witch hunt.

  107. Scott February 7th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Selena Roberts is a piece of trash. Not for reporting this about ARod but because she has information on 103 other names and is not releasing those names. She clearly is doing this for some personal gain and a piece of human trash. Obviously has no sense of ethics or fairness.

Personally, I don’t care about steroids in baseball. A large majority probably did it and there were not punishments for it at the time – who cares. I played at a comparable level to single or double A – sure it makes you stronger, bounce back but let’s be honest – if you can not hit a 99 mph heater or 12 to 6 hook – you can juice every day and it will not help. Much greater things to worry about.

  108. Crosetti February 7th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Just to put things in the right perspective, who the hell Selena Roberts thinks she is, to “give Alex every opportunity to refute the story?”

Media people is taking too far the joke that they´re some kind of judges, as if their word were the accuracy and the true thing.

Come on, Miss Roberts, you´re a good baseball writer. Keep writing about what goes on on the field and let the people involved to solve their problems if such exist.

We fans are tired of you media people trying to sell paper and air time by kicking and trashing others.

  109. Pete February 7th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Turn it over to the government?? Let Henry Waxman get a hold of it. We should play ball by the middle of 2011. This AROD thing is just one more publicity hungry character assasination by the media. What a joke

  110. Travis February 7th, 2009 at 5:10 pm

It was always curious to me that, no matter how many times Ken Griffey Jr. broke down in mysterious ways, no one in baseball would suggest that he might be using steroids.

  111. Bobby February 7th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

HOW DID SHE GET THE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW ALEX RODIGUEZ TESTED POSITIVE?

ALSO, WHY DOESN’T SHE POST OTHER POSITIVE TESTED PLAYERS?

WHO IS PAYING HER WAGES FOR HER WRITING?

YES, I AM A LITTLE UPSET AT THE BLATANT BIAS!!!!!!!

  112. Sam Sucks February 7th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Sam, when is Pete coming back? Your journalism talent is a joke. You suck.

  113. CTballfan February 7th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Wow, no comments about Torre’s book? That’s one in the plus column.
I foresee some of the other 103 being made public, it being thrown out of any courts for use as evidence, and one enormous and growing mess around tipping, so-called anonymity, leaks, etc etc etc ad nauseum.

This is going to be a long season off the field. I hope there is a whole lot of quality play between the foul lines to keep the focus off all the manure.

  114. David February 7th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

This is the same reporter that skewered the Duke University Lacrosse players. She also has shown a clear anti-A-Rod agenda. I will not assume her report is accurate.

  115. Tank February 7th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

This is an atrocity. SI is being irresponsible. They should’ve have released all 100+ names. Not just A-Rod. This is completely unfair to A-Rod, even if it is true. I’m standing behind A-Rod.

I hope A-Rod has the best season of his career, lights up the post season, and leads the yanks to a world series. Just to shut up each and everyone of his naysayers.

  116. Ed A. February 7th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

There are 103 players on the list and only AROD is named? Do you think there is an agenda attached to this report? Selena says she was doing a story on AROD when she came upon this information. Again I ask, do you think there is an agenda involved? Mr. Abraham defends Selena and Sports Illustrated but that is just one jornalist protecting another which happens all the time. Question a journalist and watch all the others rush to the defense. I would like to know why only AROD is mentioned.

  117. Brian February 7th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

To all you Yankee fans who are blindly supporting A-Rod:

How does it feel to be such hypocrites? The entire baseball world criticized Giants fans for supporting Bonds through his whole steroids fiasco. Now you are supporting your number one player so blindly. You go to the extent of calling the reporter names and criticizing sports journalism. Get ready for that dirty feeling when you cheer for someone who is a fraud. I should know, I cheered for every Barry Bonds home run as he marched to 756.

The fact that no one seems to be criticizing Rodriguez means that us Giants fans deserve an apology from you Yankee fans. Hell, Bonds was a bigger target than Rodriguez ever will be because most of the sports media world seemed to despise him.

  118. kevin February 8th, 2009 at 12:57 am

You Yankee fans are pathetic. This is the only Baseball site where A-ROID’s is being steroid use is being justified.
The man is a LOSER!!!!! A-ROID, and read that word A-ROID b/c you will be hearing for a long long time is a LOSER.

    Enjoy your year Yankee fans….:)

100+ players test positive…….30 teams….means roughly 3 player per team……look at every roster……the 3 best players on every team or every guy who hit 25-30 homers is on steroids, its that simple…..until every name is released i will operate on the assumption that basically every player with decent numbers uses. by the way…..i dont root for alex, damon, melky, etc…..i root for the laundry, and the front of the shirt says new york….ill root for the yankees with the same passion this coming year like i have the past 20

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  153. look at these guys August 11th, 2014 at 8:11 pm

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
