Live-blogging the ESPN interview

Somebody told Alex to use the word “culture” a lot.

It’s also truly hard to believe that any person — never mind a professional athlete — would inject substances into their body for three years without knowing what they were. Yet that is what A-Rod is claiming.

That is simply dangerous to your health.

UPDATE, 6:15 p.m.: Alex now says he has not used since 2004, including blood tests before the 2006 WBC.

UPDATE, 6:16 p.m.: Alex is attacking Selena Roberts now, saying she tried to break into his house. If that is true, that is crossing the line. Peter Gammons did not follow up on that.

UPDATE, 6:18 p.m.: Alex says he wants to help kids and that honesty is the only way. He says he’s tired of being stupid.

UPDATE, 6:19 p.m.: Alex is disappointed in himself, he says. The “culture in Texas” is mentioned again.

UPDATE, 6:24 p.m.: Alex praised Andy Pettitte. “The truth will set you free,” he said. “I’m just proud to be here sharing my story.”

Gammons just asked two questions about his message to children. Really?

Alex said the PED usage was, “an aberration.”

UPDATE, 6:26 p.m.: Selena Roberts released a statement saying Alex’s charges were “absurd.” Given that police records can be checked, we’ll see who is telling the truth. Alex claimed she was cited by police and was escorted off the Miami by campus by police. That can all be verified.

UPDATE, 6:38 p.m.: OK, back at it. A-Rod is making his case for the Hall of Fame.

UPDATE, 6:39 p.m.: Alex went after Jose Canseco, saying he was 100 percent false.

UPDATE, 6:42 p.m.: “I have great certainty that I will overcome this.”

Alex is attacking Roberts again. “She has been stalking me for the last three or four years.”

Gammons again does not follow up to ask what he means.

UPDATE, 6:45 p.m.: Alex says he has not read Torre’s book. He now says everybody makes fun of him in the clubhouse. “It’s a great compliment to me.”

UPDATE, 6:47 p.m.: “I got caught up in the ‘Everbody is doing it’ era,” he says.

There was another question about what he would tell kids.

UPDATE, 6:49 p.m.: The interview is over. Alex’s camp made a good choice in Gammons. It wasn’t exactly Frost/Nixon.

People who support and like A-Rod will believe he came clean. Those who don’t like Alex will find the interview specious. He’s a polarizing figure.

Everything else aside, he admitted he took PEDs for three years. That’s a long time. He also lied about it for six years. That’s a long time, too. Some will believe he’s telling the truth now, some will not. He’s the only one who knows for sure.

i am floored! he is claiming that at the time of the couric interview he didnt know he had ever done steroids!

he is just piling lies on top of lies. this just isnt going to work. he should have just said nothing rather than lying like this, its ridiculous!

  2. Gopher February 9th, 2009 at 6:17 pm

    Rip job on Selena Roberts

  3. yankeefan91 Arod fan (sign manny now) February 9th, 2009 at 6:18 pm

wow this woman is a stalker

  4. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

“a championship team or 2″ cmon alex think big!!!

  5. a reader February 9th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

pete or anyone that knows the answer to this question:

in interviews like this one with gammons, does the person being interviewed get the questions at all in advance, before coming on camera?

    thanks!

  6. kidjock February 9th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

It’s called reporting, although breaking into the house was over the line.

  7. Ty February 9th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

No use since 2004 now? This gets better and better.

  8. Chien-Ming Vase February 9th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

but he said he woke up and said what was i doing back in 2003, then he denied knowing he had ever done steroids.

now he’s attacking the reporter and he’s saying she is full of baloney! o my god this is a complete disaster!

  9. tantron willoughby February 9th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Aroid doesn’t know what he injected? He is making that up; he is too calculating a thief not too know. He’s done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

why are the yanks the posterchildren for steroids?

  11. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Arod & Selena in a stalker death match?

  12. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

“the truth will set ye free”" this is just too funny…keep talking a-hole

  13. gayle February 9th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Gammons and ESPN said that no stipulations were given for the interview and no questions were off limits

  14. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

he was clean in little league…did he just say that?

  15. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

This interview is terrible. Gammons is lame/ ARod sounds like a simpleton.

  16. David February 9th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Look at that Rangers clubhouse during those years…Juan Gonzalez, Palmiero, Nitkowski, Pudge, John Rocker, Caminiti and now A-Rod. That’s quite a list for one team, and those are only the guys who got caught. I can only imagine the crap being passed around the weight room.

To scare Yankee fans even more, look at the 1B on that Texas team…that’s right, Teixeira. How long before that mea culpa?

  17. tantron willoughby February 9th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Maybe Aroid brought a bag roid lunch to work with him. Now he hasn’t had roids since 2004? He is a dummy plain and simple. I wonder how long it took him to remember the word culture ?

  18. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

    Pete,

I don’t know about the house issue. If she got cited, that would be in the public records.

Perhaps you can check with the Miami Beach PD to see if she was cited.

I know for a fact she was thrown out of the UM Center and she has shown up unannounced on several occasions this winter.

I’ll leave it to you to judge whether or not she is crossing the line.

  19. Vito February 9th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

    Somewhere Jose Canseco is smiling

  20. John in Ohio February 9th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Saying that he didn’t know what he “ingested” is how he hopes to get around the Couric interview.

  21. no.27 February 9th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

He said that he didn’t think he took steroids until this lady told him he failed the test. He’s got 9 more years of playing for people to try to dig into this statement and find out where he got his PEDs and find out if he knew what he was taking. It’s possible that he didn’t know what he was taking, hopefully it’s true.

  22. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

I hope this marks the last time ESPN hands Gammons the mike in a big situation.

  23. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

    now he’s lying about selena

  24. trisha - NY Yankees, 2009 World Champions February 9th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Geeze I actually think that Alex did a great interview for Alex.

  25. Gopher February 9th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

I’m ready to put this all behind and support A-rod. He stepped up, showed contrition, lets get back to baseball and winning #27.

  26. Carl February 9th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

    Real classy Selena.

  27. kidjock February 9th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

you can’t say you didn’t know you took it until Selena told him he failed, then say you took it for 3 years.

  28. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

alex looks smaller…maybe he is off the juice…except for hgh of course

  29. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I really hope Alex is correct in all of this.

Even one comment that turns out to be untrue will set his entire confession back and allow for additional doubts.

  30. yankeefan91 Arod fan (sign manny now) February 9th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

how come all these people i never seen before in this blog are just coming out now and commenting about how arod cheated where have ya benn in the past

  31. I want Michael Kay's job February 9th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

He did say he has the papers to prove the trespassing issue from the Miami PD. Why would he make that up?

  32. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 9th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

I wanna know if she was indeed cited by the Miami Beach PD.

  33. no.27 February 9th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

I think there has to be truth to what he’s saying about this lady. He brought it up on his own. There is NO benefit in making this up.

  34. Celerino Sanchez February 9th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

A-Rod stepped up? I didn’t know what I took? blaming GNC? I dislike him more today than I did yesterday. Hopefully Swisher and Gardner stay clean so there is someone to root for on this team.

  35. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

It’s one thing to talk about power, it’s quite another to look at his gold gloves, which have nothing to do with steroids and power – nor did they when he was in Seattle.

Hey, I listened to WEEI on the way home and Glen Ordway was defending Arod.

I’m thinking that either consciously or subconsciously other teams keep playing the specter of “the other 103″ and are being suitably respectful because of it. Ordway said as much.

  36. Mike February 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Man .. Ok Alex we forgive you . .Geeezzz its almost like he killed someone .

Cant wait for the season to start

  37. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

    Sj44,

I didn’t hear the Selena stuff. Is she saying that she was never escorted off of the UM Center?

  38. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

does anybody believe a word he says?

  39. Tom February 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Oh, lordy. I know what A-rod did was deplorable and cheating; however, if A-rod’s allegations are true, Ms. Roberts may be crazy.

  40. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

    OK that’s over.

    NEXT!

    Pitchers and catchers time!

  41. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

    91,

They are called trolls. Ignore them. They don’t add anything to the debate.

  42. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

    wow…the voice of the yankees

  43. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

“I didn’t know what I took? blaming GNC?”

I think it’s possible that Alex took plenty of things (more than just the 2 listed). He’s better off just saying “look, i took PED’s” rather than trying to list the names of every substance. Does it really matter? He cheated. He’s attempting to admit it and ask for forgiveness.

  44. john February 9th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

this is where some of you don’t seem to get it. You don’t have to inject everything. Some of these can be swallowed too. Him not knowing may simply mean what type or name of a steroid he took. If a trainer tells you here is this one and this is what he does or a friend or another player, etc. is it a surprise he doesn’t know or remember, he may have taken many different kinds as well as a ton of supplements that might be legal.

  45. Ham Fighters February 9th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

i am shocked! that was colossally bad!

roberts has already called him on his allegations and im betting we all know who’s going to prove correct there.

if its even possible, he has lowered his credibility even further!

one thing i do believe is that he didnt discuss his answers with anyone, b/c anyone could have provided him with better advice than what he came out with.

    i just cant believe it!

  46. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 9th, 2009 at 6:34 pm

I want to see this police report.

  47. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:34 pm

I think Michael hit it on the head. I am just so grateful that he admitted. I think we were all prepared for denial or silence so this feels good.

  48. mjs20 February 9th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

    ARoid has to be asked
    1) Are you using HGH
    2) Did Jose Canseco hook you up with ____ (whatever that guy’s name was)
    3) Did you get inject steroids in your behind?
    4) Do you think any records you get wull be tainted becasue you cheated

And… why didnt he look at the camera a lot… he looked and acted like he was lying.. which he is good at

  49. Tom February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

A-rod better watch himself. If he’s wrong about Roberts’s actions she may sue him. Or, at least write a chapter about it in her next book.

  50. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Rebecca I doubt you’ll see the police report. But I bet you may hear about it one way or the other dear.

    :)

  51. Carl February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

A-rod doesn’t want to throw some of his old friends under the bus by saying what he bought and who he bought it from.

  52. john February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

can’t wait for someone to bring in one of those people who can read by peoples actions whether they are telling the truth or not.

  53. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

    Ham Fighters,

SJ is saying that there may be some truth to at least some of Alex’s claims regarding Selena.

    reserve judgement…

  54. Wang Chung February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Listen to the interview people. It makes perfect sense that he didn’t ask what he was taking or that he even wanted to know. If say Jose Canseco was giving me PED’s I truly wouldnt want to know and would want to convince myself that I wasnt doing anything illegal. It is much more easing to the conscience to be able to believe that you might not actually be doing anything wrong.

  55. Jeff February 9th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Wang you are playing both sides. Peter in his post said that selena would be over the line if she did that. And Pete, I’m really looking forward to that verification.

And i dont want to hear how he should be “commended”. He is sorry he got caught. He lied to everybody on 60 minutes and only told the truth when confronted with the evidence. This guy is no victim and deserves all the “bashing” that comes his way now. And this is coming from someone who has supported him for a long time.

  56. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

“Rebecca I doubt you’ll see the police report”

    Isn’t it public record?

I imagine it will get posted on the net, if there is one.

  57. I want Michael Kay's job February 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

    Boston Dave,
I totally agree. Who cares if he admits exactly what he took. He admitted he cheated. Whether it was GNC, desinger roids, Conseco/Pettite/Clemens’ stash he admitted he broke the rules. Why would he lie about the Selena Roberts debacle. He said nothing derogatory towards the union even though he could have ripped them a new “a-hole (NY post jab). Some of you need to get a life.

  58. PAT M. February 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

    The new A-Rod

  59. DT February 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

Roberts has to be loving this. Free pub!!

Gotta sell that new book. Ching Ching. $$$

Roberts was asked about the 104 names on MLB interview. She didn’t deny she had all the names. She respects the “process”.

  60. yankeefan91 Arod fan (sign manny now) February 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

this is a great interview so far and he ask for his forgiveness an i forgive him

  61. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

    Alex is innocent again till proven guilty of using while a Yankee. What will he say then. “I was older but still naieve” {could never spell that word}

  62. Jeet Skeet February 9th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

this guys is still my favorite player and he always will be. I believe the guy..he apologized and lets move on. Peter Gammons is a retarded..Selena Roberts is retarded. it was a great apology and i forgive him

  63. Doreen February 9th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

He said he had the paper (about the house in Miami) and looked like he made a move to go get it. He was seriously p-d off about Ms. Roberts. He spoke about she was doing a book on him. It’ s not inconceivable that she was relentlessly trying to gain access to him? I seriously hope Alex told the truth and did not exaggerate for effect here, because anything short of 100% of the truth puts everything under further scrutiny.

  64. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Check this out. WEEI said that a poll of 39000 people on ESPN asked if they believed Arod used steroids after 2004.

    Those who didn’t believe – 56%
Those who believed he did – 44%

(The numbers may have changed since my ride home. It will be interesting to see the numbers after this interview.)

  65. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

I know she was asked to leave the campus. I don’t know if it was campus police that escorted her out or she left on her own.

My info is, she walked into the Hecht Center work out area. She approached him and confronted him Re: the test. He gave his answer and walked away.

She followed him and at that time was asked to leave.

I trust the person who gave me the info.

She has also showed up and confronted him with questions at other times this winter.

She is writing an unauthorized bio on him.

Something that is an issue when discussing this, IMO.

  66. matthew frags February 9th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

PLEASE REMEMBER… this “journalist” was the fool who “broke” the Duke Lacrosse story. She embarrassed the NY Times (which is why she doesn’t work there anymore) and she stills refuses to admit she was wrong.

  67. Michelle B. (X is the new black) February 9th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

again, for those who dont believe it’s hard to remember what you were taking. Some of them can be ingested – not all of them need to be injected.

    http://www.steroidology.com/st.....names.html

  68. Jeff February 9th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

100% not true..LOL. yeah that makes me believe you more A-rod.
Did you 100% not take those roids in the katie couric interview? Or was that just 75% ??

  69. john February 9th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Ms. Roberts was also one who went after the Duke Lacrosse players hard apparently. Alex’s accusations are pretty strong against her so I don’t necessarily believe him now, but her motivation before the report and her digging up all she can on him, I am sure this was not a positive book on Arod to begin with and she probably doesn’t come up roses on her journalistic approaches either. This is to further her career no doubt regardless of finding this stuff on him.

  70. Yanksfan7788 February 9th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

I work at a theme park here in Florida. We have cops here on the weekends. from what i’ve seen they don’t alwways cite people. they just might escort them pout of the premises and live it at that. So she might have not been cited, just escoirted out.

  71. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

    Who would buy that book?

If you hate ARod are you going to blow 25$ on a book on him?

If you like the guy do you want to buy a book that trashes him?

  72. Clare February 9th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

My take away was that he took lots of different things that were banned. He said he “experimented”. He also said he hadn’t heard the word Primobalan til the other day.

Some of it was clearly scripted, and I would have preferred a little less emphasis on his naivete, but overall I think this did the job.

Yes, obviously people can nitpick particular words or phrases, but I think he got the basics out. He was wrong, he’s sorry, he took some number of substances he shouldn’t have been taking for his three years in Texas. I think he was particularly good on the union question. He wasn’t going to blame the union, he is the only one responsible.

Overall, about the best he could do at this point.

  73. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Boston Dave, I was speaking in a manner of speaking.

Yes I’m sure if someone decides to post it it will be seen. Of course that would merely take going to the Miami Police station if one is that obssessed.

I guess I will wait for some official report. I really don’t need to see anything.

  74. I want Michael Kay's job February 9th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    Doreen,
Exactly. The way I see it, why would he lie about that. He has nothing to gain. The story is out. He had to response when Gammons asked him about the union. He could have just as easily spent 5 minutes disintegrating the state of the MLB union. She approached him in a gym in Miami. I highly doubt Alex goes to a public gym such as Golds or NYSC club. Is she a student at UMIAMI? Last time I checked you cannot enter a college gym without a student ID or special access.

  75. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

“Overall, about the best he could do at this point.”

    I agree.

  76. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

“Roberts was asked about the 104 names on MLB interview. She didn’t deny she had all the names. She respects the “process”.”

I think this is an issue as well. Although Pete and others do, I still can’t blame anyone who feels like Selena Roberts has it out for Alex, specifically.

  77. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 9th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

I can hear his blood pressure rise when talking about Selena Roberts

  78. THE TRUTH February 9th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

even if you only have to swallow it and not inject it, if you are a PRO athelete you KNOW EXACTLY what you are putting into your body. Alex probably has it down to the exact calorie what he is taking in, let alone what pills he is swallowing. Wake up. His body is his livelihood. Any amateur athlete knows EXACTLY what they are putting in their body, let alone a professional. Get a clue. He knows what he took

  79. Joltin' Joe February 9th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

what if selena comes up missing tomorrow…what a scandal that would be.

  80. Anthony February 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

What is the big deal if he doesn’t know the exact type of steroid as long as he is admitting he took steroids? This is really some reaching by reporters who still want there to be a shred of scandal to dig into. Sorry that the guy confessed and scooped you! How pathetic.

  81. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

I will add, I hope he has a police report on any incident at his home.

If he doesn’t, that ain’t good.

  82. Fran February 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

I really thought that Alex did a credible interview and gave a lot more than I thought he would. I think he was forthright and the fact that he didn’t say what he took – sometimes people don’t want to know.

Doreen, I thought what you did when he talked about Roberts he looked like he was reaching for a paper.

Alex gave a lot more than Giambi or Pettitte did. I hope that the media will stop analyzing his every word and just let’s get on with baseball.

  83. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Oh yay. Back to the Torre book

  84. kidjock February 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Of course this Selena is biased, and the only reason this is probably getting out is because she has a book to write, and has the cash to pay someone for the info. But I love his statements regarding the Hall, and 14 years from now is enough time to make his case. He’s a lock anyway IMO

  85. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

“PLEASE REMEMBER… this “journalist” was the fool who “broke” the Duke Lacrosse story. She embarrassed the NY Times (which is why she doesn’t work there anymore) and she stills refuses to admit she was wrong.”

    Ah yes.

  86. john February 9th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

If you do searches for her on the internet, seems like quite a few people were not too happy with her including her aggressive approach chasing after Lebron James.

Alex is promoting her book more though the more he spits her name out.

  87. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

“Some of it was clearly scripted, and I would have preferred a little less emphasis on his naivete,”

    ——————————

    Clare,

I agree. I was hoping for “I knew what I was doing was wrong but felt like I needed that edge. I can’t do anything but accept this blame and ask for forgiveness”

  88. S.o.S. February 9th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

    from previous thread.

For the people who are asking who will break Aarons record?
How do we know for sure that Aaron was completely clean through out his baseball career? I mean the other day I heard that the american olympic team were using steroids in the 60’s i believe. No one is innocent IMO. As far as getting into the HOF. He played against roided competition. If we know now that most were probably taking it then it was fair game. In 9 years, I think they are all put in the hof but with an invisible asterisk.

is the interview with alex continuing on 1050? I can’t hear it here…

  90. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

A Fraud questions? I think this interview has officially lost a wheel.

  91. Yankee Guy February 9th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Hmm, who know A-Fraud was just good old fun? Apparently he loves it.

“I will add, I hope he has a police report on any incident at his home.

If he doesn’t, that ain’t good.”

    SJ44,

If even one comment he makes proves to be false, it will discredit it all. So yes, I hope he does. I don’t know why he needed to give so much information on Roberts anyway.

  94. Tank February 9th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

A-Rod is going to kill it this year. Just watch.

  95. Clare February 9th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

I stopped watching after the first commercial break (still at work), but I think he’s trying to pre-empt the Roberts book. His hostility towards her lends some credence to the link Betsy posted yesterday which allegs the book is delving into his sexual history.

  96. Bronx Jeers February 9th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Did he just blame the coaching?

  97. Monique February 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Where, anywhere, does he mention a PED on MLB’s list? Where?

  98. Celerino Sanchez February 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

So let me get this staright – the pressure of the contract in Texas drove him to use roids. So we are supposed to believe once he got to NY where there is a million times more pressure, he stopped? He should have stayed and hid in the Bahamas.

Did you here TJ Quinn on ESPN? No one takes the stuff he failed for by accident.

oh, the rest of you ‘fans’ are too busy bashing Roberts to realize your hero is a fraud.

  99. S.o.S. February 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

This reporter sounds and looks more and more like the fatal attraction chick.

    SJ,
Not sure if you read my post on the 18 month down fall of Alex. Did you mean that about his personal life or business or both? The opt out was sooner than that, so i was assuming that wasnt part of it.

  100. J February 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

“PLEASE REMEMBER… this “journalist” was the fool who “broke” the Duke Lacrosse story. She embarrassed the NY Times (which is why she doesn’t work there anymore) and she stills refuses to admit she was wrong.”

Why is this relevant? The information presented in the A-Rod story is true; what is the point of attacking the messenger here? I understand being upset about a player one likes being hit by this scandal, but turning around and trying to nail Serena Roberts is ridiculous.

  101. Monique February 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Where, anywhere, does he mention a PED on the MLB’s list?

    He doesn’t.

  102. ZMAN7777 February 9th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Ahh, we have another 8 years to look forward to with this self-destructing cancer. I truly believe nothing A-Rod says, and I bet he doesn’t even believe himself half the time.

All the money in the world can’t buy you ethics, supporters, or honesty.

If there were only a way to shed this bad penny . . .

  103. Gopher February 9th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Just have a feeling that he is going to have an absolutely stellar season, 2007-esque. He has always had talent and he will focus on baseball to proove himself.

  104. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

    Clare,

    That makes sense.

At least, the more Alex divulges and the more honest he gets would seem to make Roberts book less interesting. It will all be old news in a couple months.

  105. Yankee Guy February 9th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Before he said he had no idea that he failed the drug test. Wouldn’t it at least cross his mind, knowing that he was taking something at the time of the test?

I still think he is covering some things up. I’m very interested to see this police report.

  106. ANSKY February 9th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Until Roberts names her source, I’ll believe it was Alex’s ex-wife & Jose Canseco, and she’s on (at least to some deree)a self-promoting mission instead of a pure journalistic endeavor. Correct info or not, there’s a huge difference.

  107. Celerino Sanchez February 9th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

He should have stayed in the Bahamas

  108. Virginia Yankee February 9th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

To his credit, he refuses to give up his former teammates in Texas. That clubhouse must have had a steroid buffet table.

  109. Ham Fighters February 9th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

“and what makes me upset is that sports illustrated pays this lady, selena roberts, to stalk me. i mean, this lady’s been thrown out of my apartment in new york city, this lady has, 5 days ago she’s been thrown out of the university of miami police for tresspassing. and 4 days ago, she tried to break into my house while my girls are up there sleeping, and got cited by the miami beach police, i have the paper here…”

    response by selena roberts:

“the allegations made by alex rodriguez are absurd. i’ve never set foot in the lobby of alex’s new york apartment building, never spoken to the university of miami police, and never set foot on his home property or been cited by the miami police for doing so.”

  110. Clare February 9th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

    Boston Dave,

Yes, but sex sells. Roberts broke the steroids story now, but you know she’s saving something new for the book.

  111. Terry from NH February 9th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

    Gammons kinda praises Arod. Weird!!

  112. S.o.S. February 9th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

    “Who would buy that book?

If you hate ARod are you going to blow 25$ on a book on him?

If you like the guy do you want to buy a book that trashes him?”

Can we say the same thing about Torre’s book?

  113. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

    Yankee Guy,

Alex knew he took PEDs and that there was a chance he failed. But unless someone tells you that you failed the test, you can never be 100% sure. Of course it had to have been in the back of his mind.

Whether or not he knew if he actually failed isn’t as important. He knew he cheated.

  114. m February 9th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

    Couple of things.

Would Serena Roberts be considered an investigative reporter? Let’s pretend for an instant that she is.

    1. Investigative reporters often push the envelope.

    2. Attempting to enter someone’s home without invitation is clearly crossing the line. I’m sure Alex’s home has cameras. And surely he lives in a gated community?

    3. Dogging someone in the paper and stalking someone are two different things.

    4. Is the workout area off limits to anyone who’s not a student or an alumnus?

    5. Lots of gray area here, but probably a little bit of truth on both sides.

  115. yankeefan91 Arod fan (sign manny now) February 9th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

arod did good he was being honest even peter gammons said he was very impreesed of how honest arod was

  116. Terry from NH February 9th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

I do believe Arod will have a monster season (especially with Tex next to him) this season. The monkey is off his back, not totally off, but he will be at peace for the first time since being a Yankee.

  117. J February 9th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Still, whatever her motivation, the story that came out was a good, solid piece of journalism. Not a story that a lot of people WANTED to see, but a good bit of reporting nonetheless.

But yes, I do agree that her sources are important — not so much to me personally, but obviously MLB, the Union, and A-Rod should be very, very interested in finding out who is leaking information.

  118. Baseball Fan February 9th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Well, Alex is already an established Liar, we all accept that.

If anything he just said is PROVEN incorrect by multiple credible eyewitnesses, police reports, etc, would anyone here concede that this interview even made things worse?

  119. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

    SOS,

    Personal.

Cynthia isn’t the source. She would never do that to him. She was at the house during the entire interview.

    That’s not how she rolls.

  120. Yankee Guy February 9th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Boston Dave – good point, thanks.

  121. WayneTolleson February 9th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Look…as much as this needed to come out, every article Selena Roberts writes is tabloid-material, and sensationalistic. I doubt Alex’s claims about her are true, however, there’s a reason why she doesn’t write for the NY Times anymore. She digs for muck, consistently, all in the hopes of ruination, not creativity.

That being said, A-Rod is the definition of a dunce. He needs to sit in the corner for another 9 years with the dunce cap.

  122. rodg12 February 9th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

Overall, very good interview by ARod. Totally owned up to it. Gave exact time he stopped. Sure, he didn’t list everything he took. Big deal. He did say he took multiple things. Like anybody here remembers everything they did 6 and 8 years ago.

  123. Clare February 9th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

I’m a little worried about the Roberts quotes. We all know ARod speaks in hyperpole sometimes, so I hope he’s not oversting things here. Obviously he’s annoyed, and I doubt that the Roberts stuff was in his talking points.

  124. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

    Clare,

Perhaps. I guess the inevitable NY news headlines “A-Roid likes she-males” will fuel that fire…

…but I have a feeling that people have had enough. I’m sure some books will sell but for most, they will probably be so sick of this that it won’t sell quite as many copies as hoped.

Unless of course she is saving a couple extra names from that list for the book???

  125. matthew frags February 9th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

“I think this is an issue as well. Although Pete and others do, I still can’t blame anyone who feels like Selena Roberts has it out for Alex, specifically.”

YESH… her career was left for dead after her accusations-comments regarding the Duke Rapists… SO, this is her way to redeem herself.

Hey J… I hear ‘ya. BUT, I don’t want people to claim that she was just digging up the truth… Doing a good job, doing what a reporter does… In fact, she doesn’t deserve any gratitude b/c this is a self-serving endeavor on her part.

Why only release Arod’s name? Actually, I have serious doubts how she “stumbled” upon this information… Why now? Why her? Just too many coincidences here for me. We have a woman who was virtually dead in her profession when she committed career suicide for her wild claims, and we have a test which took place 6 years ago resurface just days before ST begins? Don’t be naive.

  126. E-Man February 9th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

“It’s also truly hard to believe that any person — never mind a professional athlete — would inject substances into their body for three years without knowing what they were. Yet that is what A-Rod is claiming.”

    Pete,
He never admitted to injecting anything.

  127. Boston Dave February 9th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

“I doubt that the Roberts stuff was in his talking points.”

I was thinking the same thing. He gave quite a bit of detail. He could have made his opinion of Roberts clear without setting himself to be proven wrong.

If even the smallest detail doesn’t hold up, it will allow for doubt of his entire confession.

  128. Sean Serritella February 9th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

No matter what exaggerations he told during the interview, he’s still came out and admitted it and fans will remember that.

Peter Gammons just gave him a total thumbs up for what he considered to be a forthright interview.

It’s all good from my perspective. He’ll live with the ramifications but this is now behind him in terms of confronting the press.

  133. jeff February 9th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Such odd timing. Still interesting to me that all Yanks and Mets ever since the Mitchell Report are the only players showing up with steroid allegations. We need to see the 103 names aside from Alex. It’s not to clear Alex’s name, more to clear the Yankees and Mets team names.

I can speculate all I want on Nomar’s instant career decline in 2004 or Ortiz’s freakish career bump. I can keep coming up with more and more players I think juiced and there’s no way of proving me wrong. I will bet anyone that there’s at least one Phillie or Brave or Red Sox star on that list.

Imagine if the names come out and Sammy Sosa and Manny aren’t on the list. They will be the saints of baseball.

  134. john February 9th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Selena Roberts book Hit & Run the Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez

I can see why he is probably ticked off on top of this news. She probably has been going thru his life like a fine toothed comb trying to dig up dirt. Doesn’t sound like a biography it sounds like a rip job.

She lost all creditbility too with the Duke articles amongst other things.

Arod is at fault and should be held accoutable.

And there is nothing to be proud of from her standpoint to do what she does it.

  135. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Ham Fighters funny that the interviewer (Gammons) felt the opposite.

I’m going to track down the latest on the ESPN survey and we’ll see how people are feeling about Arod and truth.

    Hang on now kids.

  136. Bombshell February 9th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

I hope he isn’t lying through his teeth about anything he claimed on Selena Roberts. Why did he feel the need to set himself up to be a bigger goat?

Overall – didn’t help him at all IMO. There’s not a chance in hell that he didn’t know exactly what he was taking. Gammons is a fool and should never be allowed to run another interview like that again. And if A-Rod was stupid enough to blatantly lie on 60 Minutes, why can we trust him 100% when he says he has not taken them for 5 years? He didn’t even get the dates consistent!

  137. PittsburghYankeeFan February 9th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

So everyone here trusts a moron who helped railroad innocent lacrosse players 2 years ago more than Alex Rodriguez? Give me a break. Once somebody produces a witness, she’s toast–thank goodness.

The woman has a history of pushing the edge, unethically.

Alex came out and admitted he took PEDs. What else can he do? He also said that he took nothing after 2003. Why can’t we believe him? Let the thing rest.

If Roberts knows the other 103, why just expose Alex? Why not expose them all? Why? Because she’s a vindictive psycho stalker.

The rest of the sports press better get your ducks in a row prettty quickly, or else she’s taking you all down…

  138. Tank February 9th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

He came across very honest and sincere. I mean, at points, the guy had a tear in his eye. After his media inquisition at Spring Training, it’s time to get over it. Steroid use was just a prevalent, common place occurrence in the clubhouse. TIme to move on people.

    Rally around A-Rod.

  139. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 9th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

“Imagine if the names come out and Sammy Sosa and Manny aren’t on the list. They will be the saints of baseball.”

    ——————————————

The sad thing is, just because a player isn’t on that list doesn’t mean they never used. It means they didn’t use… or they never got caught.

Test everyone year round for all PED’s. Or we will never get beyond this.

  141. J February 9th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

I don’t feel I’m being naive, my point here is simply that attacks on the reporter’s credibility or motivation might have been worthwhile and relevant during the period where we hadn’t been hearing anything from A-Rod, but now that he’s essentially confirmed the information, what purpose do they serve other than to distract from the actual issue at hand? There are perhaps legal issues here regarding how supposedly-confidential information was handled, but that’s not about Roberts; it’s about the actual leakers.

It might not answer all of the questions you have (or the ones I have), but there is a brief Roberts Q&A on SI.com right now that talks a little about the whys and hows of digging up this info.

  142. John in Ohio February 9th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

  144. I want Michael Kay's job February 9th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

I just don’t see why A-rod would lie about the Selena Roberts stuff. It would effectively ruin ALL of the credability in regards to the whole interview (which some of you think is suspect to begin with). Hopefully, I am right. If not, A-rod is dumber than I thought.

  145. GreenBeret7 February 9th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

ANSKY, do you honestly think that his ex-wife would be at the interview if she was the leak? Get serious. The only thing she could have said is “because he told me.” This is an ex-wife, fresh from a nasty divorce. How much credibilty would that carry?

  146. Barry Lane February 9th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

It doesn’t matter whether or not the journalist was or is, biased. Nor how many other miserable individuals are also guilty of betraying a whole series of trusts. The story is about Alex, and Ms. Roberts got it right. Too bad.

  150. Doreen February 9th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

    J

The reporter’s credibility is precisely the issue at hand!

The guy is likely the best player who ever played baseball, PEDs or not. Like him or hate him, he is one of the premier faces of MLB. How you think about Alex for the rest of his career is inextricably linked to how you think of MLB.

So you have a choice: get over it, and move on, or forever wonder about MLB. Honestly, which would you do? I prefer to believe him, and honestly, the record on the field bears this out–PEDs did not appear to make a difference in his performance.

The picture is one of a very unethical person stopping at nothing, including abetting a likely crime, to produce a story.

Should this impact what we think of the story? You bet. It helps me that an unethical idiot, who should have been banned from news reporting after the Duke fiasco, is behind this obvious unlimited smear job.

I’m willing to believe Alex on this one. This is his only free pass. Pete, you should give this some thought as well.

Thanks for the painful clarification, S.O.S. This is hardly behind A-Rod. It will haunt him and his fragile ego forever. And the Yankees will never be able to unload him as he ages. He’ll be injecting himself with Ensure by the time his contract is up.

I know she was asked to leave the campus. I don’t know if it was campus police that escorted her out or she left on her own.

My info is, she walked into the Hecht Center work out area. She approached him and confronted him Re: the test. He gave his answer and walked away.

She followed him and at that time was asked to leave.

I trust the person who gave me the info.

true. Selena said this on MLB or ESPN Sunday. In addition she said she presented her credentials and asked the desk if ARod was in and they said yes, and pointed her to his work out location.

Peter, you keep saying that A-Rod injected. From what I hear, the things that A-Rod failed for were things that you can take in the pill form. Not to say I believe him, but if it was pills, at least it would certainly be more believable.

If you can point out to me where usually reasonable and known posters ever said she was wrong in her facts, then thats one thing. 191. Drew February 9th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

I don’t understand why everyone is accusing A-Rod of soft-pedaling his knowledge of what he took. I didn’t take his response to be anything more than him not knowing exact names of the drugs. Have you ever seen the names of steroids and the number of different steroids on a controlled substances list? It’s not exactly the names Tom, Bob, and Joe. He probably was taking whatever certain people told him to take with the knowledge that they were steroids, basically not legal and not accepted.

I know she got tossed out of UM last week.

What if he is telling truth?

We know he flunked a test.

We also know, she is writing an unauthorized bio on him. Which, among the passages, questions his sexuality.

‘Ya think its not unreasonable for him to feel a certain anger toward her?

She blew her job at the Times over the Duke Lacrosse Case. To this day, she has never issued an apology to those kids.

In other words, unlike Arod today in his Waterloo, she has not offered the same to the folks she slimed in her career Waterloo.

Gee, and Roberts made it sound on the MLB Network like last Thursday was the first time she approached hin face to face. She never mentioned that she pursued him previously. I guess full disclosure isnt part of her crack investigative journalism. Maybe she was busy calling her illegal sources.

As far as Pete’s comment that it’s not easy getting the other 103 names… Why is it so difficult? Is it because they are legally protected and you dont have a right to access them? If they are legally protected, isnt it illegal for someone to access them? Ever hear of the 4th Amendment? You know, the protection every citizen has against illegal search & siezzure?

I am not disputing the facts of the story.

What I am disputing is the rush to judge everything Alex did before and after his steroid use.

This once, I am willing to believe him. The alternative is to believe nobody and nothing about MLB again.

This suggests a way out of the steroid mess for MLB. Have everyone come clean, instate harsh anti-doping rules and enforcement, and move on.

It worked for Andy and Giambi (and destroyed Giambi’s career, but that is another story).

I really feel for the kids today. Hopefully, they have good, solid parents to look up to. Bobby Murcer was my first baseball “hero”, and, as it turns out, he was certainly worthy of a young kid’s adulation.

Today, there are few sports figures that merit even a baseball card purchase. Not to mention the dearth of solid citizenry in government, entertainment, business, etc.

I doubt many schools teach ethics these days, but it’s about time to dust off the antiquated topic and help kids understand what it means.

Maybe I’m moving off of the topic somewhat, but it’s sad what’s happening in every sector of society.

    trisha -
Do you have a link to that report that was written??

  218. dave February 9th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

“There are a lot of naive A-Rod apologists here. Why should it be believd that he took steroids for ‘only’ 3 years?
I guess because he’s been so truthful about his steroid usage in the past?
Do people here really think that there aren’t newer steroids available now that aren’t detectable?
There will ALWAYS be chemists and biologists willing to invent a new undetectable steroid because there are millions to be made off of it.
Unless they store blood tests to be retested once a previously undetectable steroid i found out there will always be cheaters.”

    Raymag,

When you put it like that, it is impossible for arod to prove that he did not do anything between 2003 and now. So he might as well not even try. You are not only taking the guilty without any proof route but then, you are saying that there is no way arod could ever prove his innocence to you because they are undetectable. i DONT THINK your right at all on this one but you dont need another positive roids test to know arod was juicing his entire career because it should start an epic collaprse around this year if he has been doing roids for 10 plus years. No collapse = he has not been using his entire career.

We arent being naive – we are going through the actual facts that we have on hand rather than the facts that we dont have – roids are actually punishable in baseball now unlike prior to 2003 and alex could actually get seriously fined, suspended and destroyed by the media even worse than this week and he is supposed to be the guy that cares about what everybody thinks (or is that only when it is conducive for the argument against alex). And perhaps, he matured, gained some confidence and realized he didnt need roids to be the best in baseball.

Perhaps, he no longer felt he needed roids to prove he was worth the contract when traded to a team who didnt even sign that contract. Perhaps, he realized the harmful effects of them or perhaps, he saw the torment and downfalls of guys like clemens, bond and mcgwire and realized it was NOT worth the risk on both accounts. I mean there are many reasons to understand why he quit in 2004. nOT THE LEAST of which was getting out of that clubhouse that was seemingly entrenched in roids. At Alex’s young, impressionable age when he first came to the rangers, he may have seen most of the guys on the team doing it, realized it wasnt even against the rules and guidelines of the MLB and thought he would maybe catch up on everybody else”s edge by trying it.

But im sure some of that luster faded when roids was made agaisnt the rules of baseball, he left that clubhouse and realized roids was not as prevalant in yankee stadium, saw the kind of detrimental effect of body and career that roids could have, matured in the last three years and decided it was not for him. He had to have known from his 1996 season that he had the ability to compete against major league pitching without PEDS and even if he didnt, Im sure he assumed he could play reasonably well without roids. That is about five or more reasons why alex may have quite specifically between the 2003 and 2004 seasons none of which are naive in the least and all of which are well reasoned. I figured he could have continued to do roids of course but when exactly did he quit and is it legitimate to think that without any proof outside of the failed test in 2003? Not much.

  219. pat February 9th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

“In other words, you can accept that it was factual, while being disgusted by the methods used to get it.”

Absolutely; I agree with you. What I was questioning was the general attack made by some over the last few days — including prior to the allegations made in tonight’s interview — that struck me as having nothing to do with the substance of the story (“did A-Rod use PEDs?”), and everything to do with simply destroying a messenger who delivered unwelcome news (though that messenger, if Alex is correct, might not be so innocent herself). It’s not that she was being accused outright of lying or being wrong, it’s that her credibility was being pounded for no real reason when the central facts of the original story had already been confirmed.

Based on tonight’s interview, I’m guessing that a big part of the Boras PR strategy is going to be casting Selena Roberts as a villian. Which is savvy, in that it might garner sympathy for A-Rod while distracting from the main point here: He used PEDs. And given that THAT is what all of this is REALLY about, I agree with a poster above who said that, now that we know he juiced, we just need to decide for ourselves whether we’re going to get over it or not. For me, that’s the bottom line.

  223. dave February 9th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Alex’s place in Miami Beach is on a guarded island.

You can’t get in unless the person you are seeing gives the guard a heads up.

Selena is saying that its the island is “public” and she has a right to go to his house.

The police, according to her, agreed with her and, according to her, let her go through.

I live in a similar development. I don’t know of the cops letting people in, especially reporters, unannounced.

It doesn’t happen in my development at least.

Alex’s island also has several celebrities that live on the island.

JMO but, her explanation sounds fishy to me. It doesn’t jive with the usual security policies in developments down here.

  227. Vader February 9th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

so are you saying it’s ok for players to take it even though it is a banned substance and can not be tested?

  233. Doreen February 9th, 2009 at 7:34 pm

For one thing people hear the same sentence whatever way they’re predisposed to. For instance, Ham Fighters, above, heard ARod say that when he interviewed with Couric he didn’t know he had taken steroids. I inferred that he had been lying to himself about the nature of the substances that he had taken – that he believed he had passed the steroid survey test, so whatever he was taking couldn’t be that bad.

Admittedly, he is not the smoothest person going. But, people can convince themselves of almost anything, especially after the passage of time.

Correct. Selena Roberts versus Scott Boras. I absolutely love it. Ms. Roberts won’t know what hit her in terms of negative PR on the way to Levinworth for criminal contempt. Poetic, karmic justice for the Duke lacrosse players.

In a way, this will end the steroid mess, since nobody will want to be on the same side of her. ARod’s confession is the beginning of the end of this mess.

  250. dave February 9th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

yea six years is a long time pete. So why is everyone acting like arod did this yesterday? he did it at a time when most of baseball was doing it and now, he is forced to be the scapegoat for the poor performance of selig and the like.

Pete, why are you constantly defending roberts? She sounds like an awful person who really has it out for alex. What did he ever do to her? You constantly make her out to be just some reported – she is clearly out to get alex with the ability to somehow find alex’s name on a list of 104 roids users without getting any of the other names and then, she is writing a book about what a horrible person he is. She expect alex to have a civil conversation with her about the facts in this article before she published it when she is stalking him, making comments about his sexuality and writing an entire book which is basically a long character assassination… How would you respond to someone who was doing that tio you? I would probably tell them to go jummp off a bridge. He should really find a way to sue roberts if she has done anything illegal and I certainly would not put it past her. With all of the shady facts regarding how she obtained this info along with her determination to destroy arods reputation, I am sure she did something that would be frowned upon by the general public at the very least …

  251. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Uh, no you can’t “bribe” your way in.

My place has tight security. His is even tighter.

She may have gotten in but, if she did, somebody screwed up.

You can’t get into these developments unless the homeowner ok’s it. That’s how it works.

If not, then ANYBODY could get in.

That’s the entire point of security. To not let ANYBODY in.

  252. randy l February 9th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

arod would have done well to not mention selena roberts. she just doesn’t matter. he was being loose with his description of her stalking him at his home. she said he she only went to outside his gated community. he called that threatening his girls upstairs in their bedrooms. maybe that’s how it felt to him.

i know what he meant, but he wasn’t articulate enough in describing what selena roberts was doing. this is getting to the question of when does a reporter become cross over to being a paparazzi.

i have to laugh at verducci saying alex’s charges are ridiculous because she has an impeccable reputation. verducci just lost some points with me because after her being so wrong in the duke case she does have credibility problems.

  253. matthew frags February 9th, 2009 at 7:43 pm

the cheaters deserve to be called out and to have their reps tainted… But enough of this hollier-than-thou stuff… If a player in 1955 had a carrot dangled in front of him that promised 20 million bucks a year… I betcha more players would have looked for some edge.

Ortiz, Youkilis, Jeter… all the rest from this modern era… who walk to the plate looking like a medieval knight preparing for a joust… All that “equipment” is performance-enhancing…

1- It helps them psychologically… allowing them to hug the inside w/out fear.

2- Even if they get hit, it protects them from injury… So there’s no penalty for hoovering over the plate.

Look, Pitchers aren’t even allowed to buzz the head anymore. Heck, Selig would have probably banned Bob Gibson.

The game is always evolving… changing… When Babe Ruth hit a ball that bounced over the wall it was ruled a HR… When Mantle roamed CF, it was 480 and their were monuments on the field.

Catfish Hunter used to file the ball, 1920 pitchers his the spitball…

These purists sound like our grandfathers, who claimed to walk to school uphill both ways!

No era is the same… Hitters didn’t have to face specialists in the ’30s… In the 40′s they didn’t have expansion… Blacks weren’t allowed… The mound was higher… no night games… No media scrutiny.

Point is… People always looked for an edge, and it’s hard to compare eras b/c the game is always changing. Balls are juiced, and all that jazz!

AND… we’ll never know all the names of those busted… Even if you weren’t caught, still doesn’t mean you weren’t guilty.

    Who really cares?

You cannot watch a Chargers game, or Patriot games, where they don’t praise Shawn Merriman or Rodney Harrison. Roids helps you a lot more in the NFL… Not like Andy Pettitte could hit 20 HRs b/c he takes HGH (or throw 110 mph)…

My in-laws live in a gated community in NJ. There are no celebrities there that I know of. And security is VERY strict there. I’d imagine it would only be stricter on an island where celebrities live for the very reason of being away from easy access by the press and regular people.

    Doesn’t make sense.

  256. Fran February 9th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

  258. SJ44 February 9th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

According to Roberts, the guard called the police and the police came to the house.

Now, this is where it gets murky to me.

She identified herself as a reporter from SI doing a story on Arod.

I doubt seriously she identified herself as a “reporter from SI doing a story on how Arod tested positive for steroids”.

If she did, I doubt the police let her in.

Perhaps, the police thought Arod was expecting her. I don’t know.

I just know, based on where I live and where he lives, security is tight.

For example, a couple of other celebrities live on the same island as Arod.

If say, the National Enquirer showed up, I doubt the police let them in.

She had no business being there. Certainly no business going to his house.

I have a feeling her getting access to the house was a mistake made by the MBPD.

And name me a single player that apologized for steroid use while they were still actively playing baseball professionally without first being confronted about it???? No one. Yea its been six years but since when does that matter. Andy pettitte the most honest, god fearing man on the yanks supposedly who was forgiven in literally ten minutes by most of the fans and media did not admit to doing anything wrong until his back was up against a wall and neither did Giambi. They all eventually admitted it or some form of it but none of them do a thing until they had to. Pllleeasse dont say its been six years so arod should have let us know by now. No one in their right mind would do that. You want to blame someone for waiting six years to find out about arod you should blame your fellow brethren the media. They did nothing to uncover this story allowing players to think it was completely acceptable as long as it was on the dl and then, only a decade or more later decided to turn that compliance into rage and wrath for all of those horrible drug attics. How dare they taint the sport? Meanwhile, the media along with good old bud selig forgot to tell them what they were doing was sooo wrong. Bud even forgot to make a rule stating it was wrong. Great job guys – so who gets the blame for waiting a decade or more before these players come out? I say the media and the baseball FO. Thats who is to blame

  266. Real World February 9th, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Arod isn’t going to talk about what he took, where he got it, or who he got it from. He’s not going to throw other people under the bus, nor get any other players, trainers, FO people, agents, unions heads, etc. in trouble. Is he supposed to sit there and say something like “player Johnny Bob hooked me up with his old trainer from Cleveland, who called his buddy doctor in Balitimore, and we sauced up”. He’s not going to do that. So while some of his answers were a little shady, you have to consider what he can, and really can’t answer. Stuff about himself, sure. Stuff that might get other people in trouble, maybe not.

Verducci has come off being very fishy. From the Torre stuff to this. Saying that Roberts has a very good report as a writer. Is he writting the book with her?!! Like he was writting the book “with” Torre?!! I hope he isn’t allowed near the Yankee club house anymore.

  282. Steve February 9th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

ARod did a great job with the interview. He sounded very nervous, as anyone would be in his position.

While I’m not advocating steroids use, I think a lot of people are being hypocritical about this. From the owners who loved the attendance spikes from the HR increase, to the writers that didn’t want to lose insider status with the players (credit to a thread this morning on this idea), to the fans. Anyone that watched the McGwire/Sosa homerun race knew that they were juicing, yet it stayed quiet and people turned a blind eye because it was exciting and it saved baseball (probably more so than Cal’s streak).

I feel badly for ARod. It seems like his biggest downfall was wanting everyone to like him and it caused him to shoot himself in his foot. He didn’t engage in drunken brawls, spit on fans, carry around guns, or completely bash his team in public.

And it makes sense what he says about going to Texas and turning to PEDs in order to validate his contract (the Texas heat thing is interesting, and I can’t comment one way or the other). Yes, it was wrong, and I would have preferred if he didn’t use them. But it was the culture of baseball. It was all over baseball, and there was no punishment for it. I can’t say that I wouldn’t have tried steroids in his position.

Yes, his average numbers from 2001-2003 were better than the rest of his career, but Texas is also a hitters dream. He was incredible in Seattle, and he has been great as a Yankee. 2007 was an historic season. He also hasn’t failed a test since that confidential 2003 test.

ARod has been the best overall baseball player since he came up and my opinion of his talents on the field hasn’t changed much just as my opinion on The Beatles’ ability to make music hasn’t changed when I learned that they used drugs in the creative process.

Finally, I also think that anyone who has ever used adderall or a similar substance (without a legitimate, honest prescription) in college/grad school in order to help study for a test is in no position to comment on steroids use in baseball.

    johnblacksox,

Its not even about the story – she was fine with the story. She didnt try to publish something that was not true although you probably could not do that at SI. But there are two reasons ppl dont like this woman:

    1. She is writing a book about the demise of arod and this was before this story came out which makes her seem obsessed with destroying his reputation

    2. There were 103 names on that list and there were all supposed to be anonymous. No one knows how but somehow she got arods name, no others names, no list and she has four anonymous sources to back it up. There are multiple reasons why this is so frustrating to people. Its ironic that arods name was protected by anonymity that privacy was breached and somehow his accusers were all of a sudden protected by anonymity. So not only was his rights breached but he doesnt even know who his accuser is. Also, where does anyone hear those other 100 names. It almost seems like roberts went out of her way to make sure she only got arods name so that the fire can fall squarely on his shoulders.

And this more recent stuff about her question arods sexuality in the book and stalking him in real life seems like she is somewhat of a maniac. Finally, she really went hard after the duke lacrosse team in the paper by basically accusing them in the news without any facts to support her opinions. That is also a bit disconcerting considering the type of article she wrote about arod.

  296. Proud Yankees Fan February 9th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Enough is enough. I love A-Rod and will continue to support him. He is a great ball player.

I don’t consider him a cheater or a fraud. He’s an athlete, and he took performance enhancing drugs. Think about those words. Performance enhancing. Of course he would take drugs to enhance his performance. Who wouldn’t? They aren’t cheating drugs. They are performance enhancing.

Players practice batting, field and throwing to enhance their performance. They lift weights to enhance their performance. They do cardio programs to enhance their performance. They eat healthy to enhance their performance. Guess what, it is normal to want to enhance your performance!

Crack open a history book and look at the past players. Look at why a lot of the rules are in place. A lot are in place to keep players from getting an edge. That means players have ALWAYS looked for ways to get an edge on their opponents. That is completely normal. Even look at past Yankees players, and we laugh now about situations like corked bats, fingernail files, sandpaper, etc.

Get off your high horses and move on. Most of you are probably too stupid to even realize what PEDs do. They don’t just magically make muscles appear on your body. They don’t give you hand eye coordination to hit the ball. It still requires a lot of work to get in excellent shape.

Should we go after people that take Centrum vitamins? What about common medicines? If a player has a tummy ache and takes Tums before the game, guess what those just enhanced his performance.

He lied about being caught in a stupid scandal a few years ago? Really? No way. I’ve never heard once of a single person on Earth denying that they did something when confronted. Of course he lied. Anybody would. Everybody does. Get over it people. He’s human.

Now lets drop this and look forward to this year’s WS!

I was a Journalism major way back when. I didn’t end up the field, but I certainly understand the ethics, standards, etc.

When Journalists become part of the story, like Verducci and Roberts have lately, it’s usually not a good thing.

Try to discredit her as much as you want, but she was right. Keep your blinders on. Alex is a head-case, prima donna, attention whore created by Boras ala the movie Weird Science except inspead of a bra he had a bb glove on his head. Call it like it is. If he was a Sox (which he very nearly was save for the union) y’all would be tearing him apart.

Why don’t some of you go and start your own blog if Pete’s is so beneath you?

This whole thing is giving me a headache. I really don’t care about any of it. Steroid use was so rampant during the 80′s and 90′s that it just doesn’t matter. Now we are picking apart his interview for crying out loud. Why can’t people just understand that steroid use was rampant during this period instead of focusing on a handful of high profile players. It happened, we know it happened and it is in the past. Now if he tested positive since the testing and penalties were put in place, then we would have a story. Knowing that he did it in the past just makes him one of many.

I really wish there was a rolls eyes icon here.

Hmmm…rolling eyes at the truth. Interesting response. Although you’re right. ARod has made a mockery of it.
