The Yankees have their say
STATEMENT FROM THE NEW YORK YANKEES
RE: ALEX RODRIGUEZ
“We strongly believe there is no place in baseball for performance enhancing drugs of any type, and we support the efforts of the Commissioner to continually improve the testing process.
“We urged Alex to be completely open, honest and forthcoming in addressing his use of performance enhancing drugs. We take him at his word that he was. Although we are disappointed in the mistake he spoke to today, we realize that Alex—like all of us—is a human being not immune to fault.
“We speak often about the members of this organization being part of a family, and that is never more true than in times of adversity. Alex took a big step by admitting his mistake, and while there is no condoning the use of performance enhancing drugs, we respect his decision to take accountability for his actions. We support Alex, and we will do everything we can to help him deal with this challenge and prepare for the upcoming season.”

With that, I think I am done for the night. I have one more newspaper story to finish and two bags to unpack. Thanks to everybody for reading and participating today. I appreciate it.

Good job Yanks nice and simple. Now its time for pitchers and catchers!;)
Good discussions today on a sad topic.
Okay, they really, really didn’t need the sentence:
“We take him at his word that he was.” It sounds like they doubt he was. Even if they feel that way, why say so publicly? They must want this put to bed as soon as possible, so why say anything to suggest that there’s more to the story?
If they don’t feel that way, it’s really sloppy drafting. If I were editing, I would have deleted that sentence completely. It was totally unnecessary.
ppl need to stop hating on pete and taking their frustration of afrad out on him hes just reporting the facts.
*afraud
The Yanks are introducing an alternate Cap for road games this year: A white, peaked cap with a navy Blue N and an interwoven Syringe. To be used whenever they take the field or take the fifth.
What the NYY really meant to say was that Arod has us in a bind for 9 more years at 300 million plus for past performance that was artificial at best. This is our second mistake, the first with the Big G. If only we coulda known.
I expect it says exactly what they wanted it to say and implies exactly what they wanted it to imply.
If you edited it you could make it say what you would prefer for them to say and imply what you would like them to imply.
But that would not represent the thinking of the Yankees.
this really smells
This has to be KILLING those who wanted the Yankees to take Alex to the woodshed.
Oh well. Looks like some of us can get on with the season! The others of you can continue to brood and be really ticked off.
The real question is when will MLB make an example of these offenders and strip them of their right to play MLB?
I just read the statement again. I think it was a perfect statement.
Good for the Yankees.
This statement is true, after all, we are only human. We DO make mistakes…
Pokey-
(from last thread)
All I knew about the 9th Circuit was that it was in Cali. The official authority, Wikipedia, states it is “out of step with Supreme Court precedent.” I’d say a seizure of 103 names and unrelated documents pursuant to a search warrant listing only 10 names quite possibly fits the bill.
Boy times like this the nut cases really come out. It is like they lay in the weeds for some controversy to start with the Yanks and they pounce.
I don’t see anything wrong with the Yankees statement.
i think i’m going to enjoy the Yankee Classic on for a while…it’s time to get ready for baseball
“The real question is when will MLB make an example of these offenders and strip them of their right to play MLB?”
Since A-Rod never failed a test after they implemented the rules how would they be able to “make an example” out of him. If someone is to be made an example of it shouldn’t be someone who apologized publicly and admitted their wrong doing. Also hate to bring this up but A-Rod makes baseball a lot of money they dont want his presence gone from the game.
“The real question is when will MLB make an example of these offenders and strip them of their right to play MLB?”
I hope we will see that. I truly do. Obviously you won’t see it with the 2003 group since there were to be no penalties assessed with that group. But I am hoping that there are some steep penalties and some good controlled testing in the future for any users.
The real question is when will MLB make an example of these offenders and strip them of their right to play MLB?

i’m sure you’d like to see rush limbaugh off the radio for his oxycontin illegality too.
What else could the NYY say about the situation. Do you want the organization to condemn Alex for his steroid use, whether he did it as a Yankee or not? The bottom line is that Alex is far to important to the success of the NYY this season and in the future not to stand by what he said. I took the statement as saying, “Hey, Alex, thanks for being as honest as you thought you should be. We stand by what you said, and we are ready to move on to the 2009 season.” I’m sure they would much rather have people focusing on CC, AJ and Mark. I know I do…but what about you?
Last thought…
Someone asked me earlier, “Would you have done steroids for $250 million?”
Think about that. It say’s a lot about that “he’s only human” comment.
**ENOUGH** . Onward to Spring Training!
Watching the coverage of his interview on CSNE – Boston.
Ridiculous – Lou Merloni talking about the obvious signs of steroid users – “spike in numbers”.
Take a look over your left shoulder, Lou and tell me about Nomar and Papi’s “spikes”…
Good luck with the unpacking. When completed, look up ‘park effects’ in your baseball dictionary, and go back and change the absurd and inaccurate headline re steroids working. C’mon, brother. Leave the lackwittery to Lupica and the rest of the proud know-nothings.
And remember. The plural of bias is not data.
’m sure you’d like to see rush limbaugh off the radio for his oxycontin illegality too.

Yes we must all be like Barak, and not apply one set of standards to a very dim light (Aroid) and another set of standards to the prince of freedom (Rush).
“This statement is true, after all, we are only human. We DO make mistakes…”
Let’s get rid of Jails!!
All Drug users are free to go! You made a mistake! We understand, We’re human too!
I personally think the real question is who leaked sealed evidence to Roberts and why arent they being pursued as aggressively as A Rod?
In a weird kind of way this situation could turn into a positive. Perhaps the remaining doubters will come to the conclusion most players were cheating during the late 90′s till around ’05. As fans we can get past all this and look at the home run records as fake and move on. I know the media will hate when that happens because they will have to find another carcass to tear apart. But I’m sure they’ll find another sleazy prosecutor who will leak evidence and provide another flavor of meat to chew on.
What A Rod did was wrong. Leaking his name illegally is wrong. Using that leaked evidence for profit it unethical, if not illegal. But when A Rod is the only name leaked out of 104 names that’s proof enough that he is being made a scapegoat.
By the way, Steven Goldman, bless him and his working computer, ran the numbers and put up A-Rod’s run production by season. They rank like this:
1. 2007
2. 2005
3. 2000
4. 1996
5. 2001
6. 2008
7. 2002
8. 2003
9. 2006
10. 1998
11. 2004
12. 1999
13. 1997
Tantron you are annoying piece of willoughby
all true die-hard yankee fans will support arod
Awwwww crud…
ARod came out an admitted it? What will be the next story? I want mooooore. I want bloooood!
Maybe we’ll find out that Mark Texeira failed his freshman English Lit course. Hopefully some righteous administrator at Georgia Tech will feel the need to do the right thing, and leak this information to Sports Illustrated.
On a serious note, I am disgusted at all parties involved…including myself (for getting so worked up about this)…MLB, the players union, the government, and the reporters have all acted in a sickening fashion.
Hey Yankee Fans, just came here to see the reaction to this story and I must admit that I am shocked. Going after the reporter and not AROD (AFRAUD, AROID). You guys should feel betrayed (I know I would if a Blue Jay was on this list) and embarrassed that he is now staining the Yankee uniform.
This is the biggest baseball story of the year because we all lose a little innocence here. I thought he was one of the greatest, but if you look at his character there should be no surprise. When he was here in Toronto, he was a regular at the Brass Rail and was even photographed with a woman who was not his wife. His bush league stunt in Toronto when he told Howie Clark and John Macdonald that “I got it” and lied to the media by saying he just said “HA!”.
His immaturity is unfortunate because he could have been one of the greatest of all time. Now he has to wait until Bonds, McGwire, or even Pete Rose gets into the HOF before he is considered. His weak character probably also explains his lack of clutch hitting. (Before I get accused of just being anti-Yankee — I want to point out that Jeter and Matsui are players who I really respect and like).
If they have all the negative samples too, they should go back and retest all samples, and release all the failed names. Lets get everything out in the open. Why not?
The story today is about how Arod stood up like a man, was contrite and admitted his mistake. He did not place blame on a single person besides himself. I respect that. He did what I felt he had to do.
“Let’s get rid of Jails!!
All Drug users are free to go! You made a mistake! We understand, We’re human too!”
E-Man I get what you are saying. I take it you are equally disgusted with Roberts for leaking court-protected information.
Lectures from a Blue Jays fan on steroids?
Jesus on a bagel, now I’ve seen it all.
JB
Nobody is saying Arod was right to do steroids. But it’s a sytemic problem throughout the game. A lot of Yankee fans like him more today, then yesterday. I am one of them.
Selena Roberts is a hack reporter who is trying to sell a book that she is writing about Arod. As far as what he does off the field, who cares. And not to burst your bubble but I guarantee the jays have players who have done steroids as well. One last thing… HA
Ok so a Blue Jays fan can’t have an opinion. Ok. Yet another pearl Angel
No, its just a bit of the glass houses and throwing stones observation, Amandla – especially given the content of his post.
But thanks for your approval, wouldn’t have slept tonight without it, sweetie.
JB post on brother. The unfortunate limitations of logic and etiquette of some Yankees fans are not indicative of all of us.
“Yes we must all be like Barak, and not apply one set of standards to a very dim light (Aroid) and another set of standards to the prince of freedom (Rush).”
wow.
“When he was here in Toronto, he was a regular at the Brass Rail and was even photographed with a woman who was not his wife.”
Do you have any idea how many players cheat on their wives on a regular basis? I’d say at least 85%.
The right way? Yeah I guess the Aroyo slap was the right way too. Running every ball out is the right way. Saying I got it and then lying and saying you said HA is the wanker way. $200+ million and we have to resort to that? He brings shame and a lack of class to the pinstripes. You can support him when he’s on the field but call a spade a spade. The guy’s a nimrod.
I know Blue Jays did PEDs but AROID is a bit different because he is a potential HOFer. I am just saying that his character is what it is and it is unfortunate. I always hoped that I could say that I actually talked to one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
I have no idea why you think that 85% of players cheat on their wives, especially so openly. There greatest athlete that I have met on and off the ice is Wayne Gretzky and I guarantee you that he has never cheated (on his wife or the game). But maybe 85% of players do cheat on their wives, on the game, and even on themselves. But we are not talking about 85% of baseball players. I thought we were talking about the great ones. Obviously AROD is not one of them.
“I know Blue Jays did PEDs but AROID is a bit different because he is a potential HOFer. I am just saying that his character is what it is and it is unfortunate. I always hoped that I could say that I actually talked to one of the greatest baseball players of all time.”
- Calling someone AROID speaks more of your character than that of Rodriguez.
Personally I’m dissapointed that Rodriguez was doing roids. This whole thing is just bad for baseball no matter what team you root for. I love the game of baseball, but it has become too much of a corporate money making machine. Too many decisions are guided by money and in the long-run that will kill the game.
So if you’re not a potential HOFer, it’s not quite as bad that you used steroids and cheated.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
