A-Rod makes the Top 10

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 10, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Late Show with David Letterman had the Top 10 Messages Left on Alex Rodriguez’s Answering Machine last night:

10. “Hey, it’s Mark McGwire. Want to get together this week and not talk about the past?”

9. “Joe Torre here — thanks for helping book sales”

8. “Could you find a steroid that keeps you from choking in the playoffs?”

7. “Are you worried this will taint all the championships you didn’t win?”

6. “It’s Bernie Madoff. Nice try but I’m still the most hated man in New York”

5. “Michael Phelps here. Got any snacks?”

4. “This is Sammy Sosa. Just pretend you don’t speak English”

3. “Michael Phelps again. Did I call you or did you call me?”

2. “Hey, it’s Rod Blagojevich — I’ll say you’re innocent, if you say I am”

1. “It’s Madonna. You got a phone number for Jeter?”

They clearly have some Yankees fans on the writing staff at the Late Show. Good stuff.

You can find the Top 10 archive on the Late Show site.

Meanwhile, CC Sabathia was chilling at a WWE event the other day.

    Hahahaha

  2. Laura - Ready to move on from the controversy! February 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

It’s Dave’s job to make fun of people so I’ll give him a pass. However, I find nothing funny about this situation. I’m sure Alex isn’t laughing either.

  3. Patrick February 10th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

    Yeah #4 is pretty hilarious.

Laura, lighten up! Jokes can be made for almost every situation.

  4. ANSKY February 10th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

The Michael Phelps ones were F-U-U-U-U-UNNY!

By the way (posted in previous thread) I haven’t heard anything from Jim Gray for several years.

Remember Chad Curtis slamming the door on him after the world series for his Pete Rose inter-view-terrogation at the all-star game’s introduction of the all time greatest players?

I wonder which player will let Selena Roberts know in no uncertain terms that her career ain’t going to involve any interviews with baseball players any time in the future.

  5. Steph February 10th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

I thought they were pretty good– if you can’t laugh at yourself… they are just laughing at you

Scott (Bethesda, MD): Sanctimony overdose. Do I like the fact that A-Rod et al. did ‘roids? No, but what is really making me sick is the phony sanctimony from sportswriters and others who believe that these guys violated some kind of sacred trust. The truth is that athletes have “cheated” since ancient times and that they continue to do so. All of you who are calling for A-Rod’s head (the NYDN is particularly over-the-top) need to get your heads out of your tushies and get a little perspective.

Rob Neyer: (12:53 PM ET ) Scott, decorum prevents me from endorsing the specifics of your modest proposal.

Brian (NYC): Hey Rob…why do you think the cheaters of this era are so demonized while the cheaters of previous eras are still looked at through the rosie “when it was a game” glasses? One may be more dangerous than another but isn’t cheating still cheating? Is it because most sports writers have a hard time ripping their childhood idols who might have been cheaters?

Rob Neyer: As I mentioned (briefly) in my blog this morning, I’m still waiting for my colleagues — here at ESPN and elsewhere — to explain why the heroes of the 1970s get a free pass on the amphetamines they gobbled like so many SweetTarts.

These are lighthearted and a couple are pretty good.

  9. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Well, I thought the list was funny.

  10. Al from BK February 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

The Sammy Sosa bit was great.

  11. darkmoonfire February 10th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Letterman’s top 10′s can be hit or miss — but this one is a classic!

  12. pat February 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

The Tejada situation is exactly why A-Rod didn’t answer all the questions.

  13. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

    Lame lame lame.

  14. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 10th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

  15. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

What happened with Tejada, and what team is he on now?

  16. MaineYankee February 10th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

    He is right about Schilling.

  17. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 10th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

MaineYankee-I agree. Francesa is correct regarding Schilling.

    Tejada is with the Astros

  18. SJ44 February 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

That is hilarious!!! I’m sure even Arod will be laughing at that list!

  19. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

    Regarding Tejada:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....id=topnews

Former Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada was charged today with lying to Congressional investigators about the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball.

Federal prosecutors accused Tejada of making misrepresentations to Congressional staffers during an interview in a Baltimore hotel room focusing on the prevalence of steroids in the game.

  20. pat February 10th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

    jennifer

cut a deal to avoid perjury charges according to Francesa for lying to congressional staffers.

  21. MaineYankee February 10th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

I have a question for any lawyer on here. People want MLB to give out the rest of the names. Can they legally do it? My guess is they can’t.

  22. rb15 February 10th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

    I love #1. when letterman’s funny, he’s funny.

  23. Uncle Ellsworth February 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

what did mike say about Schilling?

  24. gayle February 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Something that has really bothered me over night.Tom Hicks. Tom Hicks who says he feels personally betrayed by Alex. Tom Hicks who couldn’t wait to get rid of Alex and the money he signed him to when he realized he made a mistake giving so much money to one guy no matter who that guy is. Tom Hicks who owned a team that it seems allowed the use of steroids to run rampant throughout his clubhouse, at present I count at least 6 players and didn’t say a thing while i t was happening or to be honest after it all came out until yesterday.

If I were a fan of the Texas Rangers forget about feeling personally betrayed by Alex Rodriguez, I would feel personally betrayed by an owner like that who HAD to know this problem was happening yet did nothing, said nothing and now wants to come off looking like he didn’t know anything about what was happening and is shocked by it all.

    Cut me a break.

  25. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

    People i’m glad I’m not:

    1) Alex Rodriguez
    2) Miguel Tejada
    3) the can’t-print-in-newspaper-ing @$##$@# that started fires in Australia
    4) Barack Obama
    5) Nadya Suleman (the mother of the octuplets)

  26. MaineYankee February 10th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Schilling did a story in SI a number of years ago talking about what was going on in baseball in regards to steroids. then denied it to congress.

  29. Uncle Ellsworth February 10th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

    Thanks MaineYankee

  30. Mark in Tampa February 10th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

    Gayle,

Not to mention that Tom Hicks just signed Andruw Jones to a contract, even though he is obviously(in most people’s opinion) a former user.

  31. Bronx Jeers February 10th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

“Hey Alex, Jose Canseco here. Just wanted to thank you for being the one guy that makes me look credible.”

  32. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Doreen- Agreed regarding Tom Hicks. He knew what was going on in his clubhouse. Oh he feels personally betrayed. Shove it.

  33. Mr. Exceptional February 10th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

The best part of Letterman’s top 10 lists is that #1 is never the funniest. Classic.

  34. you gotta have faith (pettite where art thou?) February 10th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

im not sure if it was posted here already or not but here is a good interview with Kevin long regarding arod: http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/.....d-mindset/

“I don’t think he needed to do them,” Long said. “But knowing Alex, if everyone else was doing it and there was a possibility that someone else could be better than him, he wasn’t going to allow that to happen. That’s the best way to explain it.”

thats the way i like to see it also.

  35. Cory February 10th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

They clearly have Yankee fans writing? You mean the rehasing of the same jokes we’ve heard forever now makes someone a diehard Yankee fan? Those are all jokes anyone who reads the NY Post could make up.

  36. Ninja Burglar February 10th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Interesting article on Alex and this situation from former teammate Doug Glanville for the NY Times:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02......html?_r=1

  37. m February 10th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I wanted to throw up when I heard Obama saying, “But the good news is now major league baseball is doing something about the problem.”

What exactly have they done in the last 72 hours but be silent.

Nothing new is being “done”. Alex is doing the “doing”. I’ll dump on MLB if there are any sanctions against Alex. Punish one, punish all 104.

Caller just called in to Mike with a good point. Said the clean plyers should have stood up to the union and told them to put a stop to this. Very good point.

  41. Betsy February 10th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Francesca is too much. He went on his show yesterday saying that A-Rod had to admit to his steroid use …so, that’s what A-Rod did. Now Mike just said he’s full of baloney and no one feels badly for him. Who said Alex was looking for sympathy? He gave an explanation and that’s that. The baloney part? Again, too bad if the media doesn’t believe Alex. He’s a darned if he did and darned if he didn’t…I really hope Alex is not reading the papers and listening to talk shows. The less he knows of what people are saying about him, the better.

As to Jeter, he always handles things the right way. I have no doubt that he’s going to support Alex. Maybe he wants to speak to him first? I think this is so much different than 2006 – there’s just a different feel. I think Alex is much more a part of the team now. He’s maybe always going to be something of an odd duck, but whatever happened a few years ago, there’s just a different vibe now. I trust Jeter to say and do the right things.

Fortunately, I missed what Kim Jones/Evan Roberts had to say to Selena Roberts, lol. I saved myself a ton of aggravation.

  53. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Betsy, Arod completely lied on that interview yesterday, which is Mike’s points. The only thing he was honest about was merely the fact he used steroids. He led us all to believe he had no clue what he was taking, that it was something that you could get at a GNC (not the case), and went on and on about it how he finally was being truthful. He even went so far to formulate more lies about Selena breaking into his house and so on.

I heard the interview with Selena and what she says appears to be a heck of a lot more believable than what A-Rod said.

  54. Andrew February 10th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

“i have to say the support im reading for alex on this blog just isnt anywhere else.”

And this matters…how or why? If you want to take a straw poll of the people, go for it. Doesn’t make what anyone is saying here flat-out wrong. It’s a contentious issue with no clear answer, and people are going to have opinions. There will be no consensus, because there never is. If you think somehow you are more enlightened then the people who post here, don’t hesitate to pat yourself on the back.

  69. ANSKY February 10th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

    Rebecca –

Other people to be glad you’re not:

Sammy Sosa – If Tejada’s in trouble, Sammy’s going to be screwed for his denial in front of congress.

Raffy Palmiero – I think it’s only a matter of time for him too. He failed a test after saying he didn’t use PEDs and he was part of that Texas team. I’d be surprised if he wasn’t one of the 104 positive tests in ’03.

Michael Phelps – We’ll never know how many sponsorship deals would have come up in his future (but now they won’t) thanks to that bong hit picture.

And I get a feeling the octuplets grandmother is carrying a bigger load than the mother of all those kids. They’re all living in her house.

    Anyways …

To his credit, at least Canseco didn’t lie to congress. He’s still a big time wanker, but at least he gets points forthat. And that he had a young & hot version of Madonna rather than the old cougar A-Rod had his turn with.

Canseco probably won’t have to face the lying problems Palmiero, McGwire, Sosa, Tejada et al may all face.

I wonder if Canseco’s relieved knowing that his nuts being shriveled up like little raisins is the biggest ‘roid-related problem he’ll face now. Good for him … I guess.

For that reason, one probably wouldn’t want to be him either.

I feel bad for Girardi, Jeter and the rest of the Yankees who are now part of the Arod Drama. What a distraction.
How many Yankees feel this would have been a Red Sox problem if that deal for Arod hadn’t fallen through.

  72. NHYankee62 February 10th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Why wouldn’t you want to be Obama??

  73. Neil February 10th, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Gammons would be the perfect guest for Letterman’s Show. Between the gap toothed Letterman and the yellow toothed Gammons, it would be a hoot of a segment.

  74. yankfan February 10th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

    This is very disappointing!
I was an A-Rod fan for a long time but no more!
The Commissioner and Major League Baseball in general
should remove any homers from A-Rods record that were
hit when he admitted using steroids!
The same should happen to that Liar Barry Bonds.
Ditto Mark Mcguire! Roger Maris’s single season home-run
record should be restored as the legitimate record as
should Hank AArons all-time Home-Run record!
The cheaters mentioned above(Sammy Sosa too) should not
even be mentioned in the record books except to say that
they cheated and their records are no longer recognized!
