Roberts interviewed on WFAN

Peter Abraham
February
10

WFAN did a lengthy and detailed interview today with Selena Roberts. It’s archived on their site if you want to have a listen. Kim Jones and Evan Roberts did a nice job with it.

I’m not going to comment beyond that. I get that people want to kill the messenger in these situations. It’s hard to expect fans to feel otherwise and it would be a waste of words to try and change minds. People get emotional about sports.

————

Meanwhile, Miguel Tejada apparently cut a deal to plead guilty to lying to Congress about steroids. The charges were filed today.

It’s certain that some grandstanding Congressman will try and get A-Rod to Washington. Rep. Elijah Cummings already has mentioned it. As I have written before, I find it a complete waste of time and money for Congress to investigate ballplayers.

Let the leagues handle it and have Congress deal with — oh, I don’t know — war, terrorism, the economy and education. What A-Rod did in 2003 is not really a pressing matter.

    >>people want to kill the messenger in these situations<<

people had doubts because of her previous history w/the Duke Lacrosse witch hunt. which you, and the media in general, would prefer everyone forgets.

now that A-Rod has confirmed her info, it’s a different matter.

  2. Joe Monte

I agree 100% Peter. We’re in the middle of a depression right now and we can’t have Congress waste any time and money trying to put baseball players in jail. ARod and most of baseball cheated, we know! Move on!

  3. you gotta have faith (pettite where art thou?)

oh please congress, really? going after arod? im glad they dont feel they have better things to do. sad.

  4. Strike One

The messenger is only the scapegoat when their is bias in the report. People want to know the information and we appreciate it, as long as it is just the facts as they are.

    AMEN TO THAT PETER.

  6. StandingO'Neill

I have no ill will toward Selena Roberts for how she handled the Arod story. If I were in her position I would have done the exact same thing. Their job is not to make sure people’s feelings don’t get hurt, they are there to break the story.

I do however have a problem with how she publicly tarred and feathered the Duke lacrosse players during the alleged rape accusations. Did she ever apologize for that or did she follow Rev Al Sharpton out the back door?

  7. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story

Did the Giants really just sign Pacman Jones? Brandon?

  8. Andrew

Pacman to the Giants is false.

  9. you gotta have faith (pettite where art thou?)

    rebecca,

nope, brandon was just messing with us. very mean, i know lol

  10. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story

Dang. I was going to have a lot of fun with that =P

  11. YanksFanLV

My biggest gripe about the story is that A-Rod’s name has been the only one mentioned out of 104. At least break the whole list.

And amen to Congress having better things to do.

  12. Monique

Put each and every one who violated Federal Law for illegal possession of a steroid in JAIL.

Do it the right way. Add 30lbs of muscle with Creatine, Like Joe would.

  13. Yogis

It was alright with me when she war writing for NYT. Rather uncomformtable with her presentation of A-Rod story, while understanding that it was her major scoop. Here is another angle of looking at the this event, by Doug Glenvile, one of A-Rod’s Ranger teammate then:

  14. jennifer

Why does everyone have such an issue with pacman. he is a little yellow creature that eats yellow dots.

  15. SJ44

    Pete,

Let’s talk baseball. Arod has his issues, Selena has her issues.

There are no heroes in this story. Everybody has agendas, Selena included.

In the immortal words of Brian McNamee, “it is what it is”.

Let’s talk baseball and move on. I think its best for everybody at this point.

  16. Tom

I don’t see how killing the messenger applies here. Ms. Roberts does have a book about Alex comming out and she did have “integrity” issues with the Duke LAX case. Oh, and she was a vehicle in helping violate Alex’s 4th amazement rights. Brining up facts about the womens history is not out of bounds here, Pete. But, she did get her story right, so good for her.

  17. rbj

“Let the leagues handle it and have Congress deal with — oh, I don’t know — war, terrorism, the economy and education. What A-Rod did in 2003 is not really a pressing matter.”

Amen. And if there is ever a time when Congress doesn’t have anything better to do, I suggest they go on vacation.

  18. Bronx Jeers

Cummings did a nice job on Clemens. Good soundbites.

Probably want’s more google results under his name.

  19. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

See Andrew aren’t you glad that’s not true. :D

  20. Strike One

Congress only cares when they are lied to. Alex can come up to the Hill if he must, say the same thing, and be done with it. He confessed. They are after those who arent confessing.

  21. Betsy

I missed a lot of the talk – is Alex definitely going to have to testify before Congress? Oh boy – many in the media have said he was evasive yesterday. He’s going to have to tell the complete and unvarnished truth -if he does, this could help him. If not, he’s finished. That said, Kay and co. picking over the remains of the interview yesterday is ludicrous. They continually miss the point that Alex admitted to using steroids. Do I really care about who gave him what?

Also, shouldn’t Congress have better things to do than get involved in baseball’s steroid problems? Kick them all out, seriously.

Selena Roberts makes me wonder about the human race. If Selena Roberts was interested in the truth, and she stumbled upon this list, then the whole list should have been revealed. Instead, she’s simply interested in targeting Alex. I’m sickened by her.

I’m sorry I don’t have a link for this – I will try to post one later when I get home from work:

In this extraordinary book, senior Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts will deliver an intimate narrative on how New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, the richest and perhaps most talented player in baseball, is on the verge of a personal and professional collapse so profound it would rate as one of the most dramatic falls in major league history.

  22. Andrew

Yes, yes I am. And yes I furiously visited and then refreshed ESPN.com and Googled “Pacman Jones Giants” to make sure it was false for sure, so good job on your part.

  23. Tarheelyank

I read Abreu can be had for less then 4 mill and one year.

Is there a place on the Yankees for Bobby?

What if we end up trading Nady?

  24. SJ44

Nope. They have moved on from Abreu.

I don’t see him coming back.

  25. Lara08

“In this extraordinary book, senior Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts will deliver an intimate narrative on how New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, the richest and perhaps most talented player in baseball, is on the verge of a personal and professional collapse so profound it would rate as one of the most dramatic falls in major league history.”

    Oh my goodness gracious!!!!

    Yeah that she’s orchestrating!

  27. skeptical

maybe if the messenger in this case weren’t so obviously biased…

    cough.

  28. rodg12

I don’t want to ‘kill the messenger.’ I just want to make sure everyone knows her history and also that she very well could have ulterior motives for writing this story. These are the facts. Especially when and idiot like Verducci claims she has an ‘impeccable’ reputation on national TV and she has been just as evasive in her interviews about the subject as many are saying ARod hs been. Stop protecting your own Pete and tell the truth.

  29. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

‘Yes, yes I am. And yes I furiously visited and then refreshed ESPN.com and Googled “Pacman Jones Giants” to make sure it was false for sure, so good job on your part.’

    LOL

  30. SJ44

Like I said, NOBODY’s hands are clean here.

The more she talks, the more she gets dirty.

It really doesn’t help book sales unless Arod HAS a “personal and professional collapse”.

Its kinda the point of the book. Its not like she is looking for a happy ending.

Next, she will be going through his garbage looking for stuff.

    If she hasn’t already.

That’s why its time to talk baseball.

We can re-visit all this when she goes on her book tour in May.

  31. Jbomb

This whole thing with Arod only proves my intial feelings that the Mitchell report was the biggest farce ever. It seems like this whole thing is turning into a personal vendetta against the Yankee orginazation as well.

Too put it plainly, let me say this; I think high ranking officials includiong Bud Selig are using these maccarthy like tactics to defelct their own personal involvment in the steroid. They turned a blind I to it for nearly a decade.
They knew exactly what was going on, now Selig wants to act like a savior. Give me a break. There taranishing players with recognizable names and numbers on the back of their jeresy inorder to deflect the public’s attention away from the really enemies, the suits at the MLB headquarters.

Lay off Arod. Why do we feel the need to tear down our idols in this society, there is something very masochistic about it. He made a mistake and think he’s proven he’s outstanding player on steriods or off. He’s appologized let’s move on.

  32. Tarheelyank

what do think about Adam kennedy?

Bill Madden: ‘Yankees have no farmsystem’

  34. Hola

Just curious why it took A-Rod mentioning that Roberts was writing a book about him to get people to discuss it.

I mean, if you were under contract to write a book with a major publishing house, you’d certainly want to promote it. And this was the ideal opportunity, right?

I guess you leave that detail out if it made you look like you were doing yet another hatchet job on the person being, um, hatcheted.

  35. saucY

    Betsy, is this your source?

    http://runninglocal.wordpress......er-simple/

  36. Adam Brufsky

Kill the messenger? When she has a history of playing fast and loose with the facts? When she damaged the reputation and college careers of innocent people and has yet to issue an apology? When she has access to the entire list, and chooses to only go after ARod? When she knows that the list was supposed to be anonymous, and was illegally seized by the feds?

Sure, Pete, believe and support her all you want–all you are doing is making the sporting press look worse and worse by the hour.

The ends do not justify the means. When will the press ever get this right?

  37. SJ44

I think Kennedy is on the back end of his career. Certainly don’t see a role for him on the Yankees.

  38. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

He’s a clutch hitter in the postseason and would add to the bench, but who knows.

  39. jeterfan2

You would think congress might be interested in finding out who may have committed a felony in leaking this information if they are having a hearing. Probably not salacious enough for that though.

  40. JS

Selena is NOT just a messenger beacuse she has a book coming out. She is clearly acting in her own interest and the more pub she gets the greater the book sales. She is a scumbag just like Alex.

  41. saucY

    Can Adam Kennedy play SS?

  42. SJ44

No, he can’t play SS and he hasn’t been a clutch hitter in years.

His game has fallen off the cliff. That’s why the Cardinals released after finding zero offers for him on the trade market.

  43. Steve B

    “Can Adam Kennedy play SS?”

No evidence to suggest it. Looks like he played part of one game there in his career.

  44. Bronx Jeers

    Saucy,

Thanks for the link. You guys should read that if you haven’t. The book sounds ridiculous.

Is this really the work of a serious sports journalist?

  45. Mark Messier

Here’s the link for the Selena Roberts book on Arod from the Harper Collins web site ..the book publisher

    http://www.harpercollins.com/b.....index.aspx

  46. Hola

Interesting how the book descriptions have disappeared. I could swear I remember reading the one on Amazon yesterday.

  47. E-Man

“Let the leagues handle it and have Congress deal with — oh, I don’t know — war, terrorism, the economy and education. What A-Rod did in 2003 is not really a pressing matter. ”

That would be nice except for one problem.. The leagues won’t handle it. Remember it took congress to get involved for them to start even considering drug testing in the majors.

And please this is Congress, this is what they do. They don’t work for you, they don’t work for the american people, they work for themselves, they work to get re-elected.

  48. bill porter

Pete, Ms. Roberts left behind a good deal of ill will by creating a body of work at the Times regarding the Yankees that at least made it appear she had a personal agenda concerning the Yankees. You can’t lift this out of that historic context. The messenger was already viewed as suspect, that is, before this report was issued. Please don’t insult most of us who remember that by implying we are viewing her worth in the context of this story only; her apparent self serving motives and the actions they apparently lead to notwithstanding.

Additionally, I find the use of leaked grand jury material offensive as a citizen and as a lawyer. I understand the need to maintain those materials under seal conflicts with the constitutional freedoms the press enjoys and that we a free people depend upon. The fact that parties profit from such behavior however is to me at best disgusting. The fact that members of the press won’t even acknowledge the moral quandary such a source of information poses does them no credit in the court of public opinion. It’s one of the reason why dispersed, diffuse internet journalism is replacing the published, physically tangible newspaper as the peoples’ preferred source of information.

You go Pro Publica! You’re the only real place to get news.

  49. Drive 4-5

    bill porter,

Congrats on the one of the most intelligent, honest and clear minded posts I’ve ever read on this blog.

  50. RGK

Not every journalist is ethical. Not every elected offical is unethical.

  51. KO

PA are you kidding me? People want to “kill the messenger” because THE MESSENGER IS WRITING A BOOK ABOUT A-ROD. Have you not caught on to this? Do you think her breaking this story has NOTHING to do with her wanting to create buzz and drive her book sales? Give me a break. This woman did not have the “good of baseball” in her sights, or whatever you want to call it. She has dollar signs in her sights and that’s about it. Don’t you see how everyone is already talking about her? This lady is loving everything that has unfolded.

  52. NHYankee62

    Hey Pete,

I’d rather have Congress deal with Arod than approve a trillion dollar spending package that includes more pork than you could ever imagine!! Water parks, dog walking parks, nature trails, frisbee golf courses, study of honeybees, new federal buildings, prostitute shelters, STD prevention, DTV conversion….. and hidden within the bill socialized health care….or rationing of health care by government bureaucrats.

The congress and senate aren’t too good at their day jobs. Maybe they should focus on steroids in baseball and leave the free market alone!!!

  53. Barbara

I usually like Kim Jones, but regarding Selena Roberts she became very sanctimonious. Listening to her and Evan, you would have thought that by outting A-Rod Selena Roberts was doing some great service for humanity. Roberts was not motivated by a desire to clean up baseball. If so, she would have names other players on the lists. Selena’s agenda is to gather as much salacious material to spark interest in her book. Like all other reporters, she is trying to get an edge and advance her career. The irony is these so-called journalists are no different from the players who take sterroids or people on Wall Street who do anything to get an edge . Some of these so called journal are no better than pararazzi.

Selena never explained how she knew that A- Rod was at the gym. I doubt if Alex sends her a copy of his daily planner. I doubt if Kim wants somebody to show up at her gym and ask her questions. She would probably label it as stalking and an invasion of her privacy. So spare me the from the media’s double standard. The bottomline is let’s not put Selena Roberts on a pedestal as if she found a cure for cancer. If I were A- Rod would hire a Private Investigator and document the stalking by the media..
