Waiting on ESPN

Here we are at WEDU in Tampa waiting to tape for ESPN2.

The station is right across the street from the George Steinbrenner Boys And Girls Club.

Boy, I wonder what they’ll ask?

Meanwhile this is the glamourous green room.

    Pete

There’s absolutely no reason to go on the air with a wrinkled shirt.

  2. nathan February 10th, 2009 at 8:57 am

say they should dump arod and get a new 3rd baseman

  3. Harry K February 10th, 2009 at 9:10 am

love the ironing board, make shirt your shirt tie and jacket are all wrinkle free….lol

  4. Gus G. February 10th, 2009 at 9:15 am

wow- i thought ours was bad. Nice ironing board, but what’s it good for? A massage? I see no iron.

  5. Glenn in CT February 10th, 2009 at 9:16 am

insist in the interview that this will NEVER go away until every name on the list is made public.

  6. Glenn in CT February 10th, 2009 at 9:17 am

and by releasing the names is ONLY a start. blood testing needs to be done on are regular basis~not random. plain and simple, take a test or get out of the league.

  7. shaun February 10th, 2009 at 9:17 am

    tell them the truth:

ARod got hosed by the SI lady

  8. shaun February 10th, 2009 at 9:18 am

And that all names or no names should be out. Not fair.

  9. Andrew February 10th, 2009 at 9:20 am

This is kind of random, but YES was scheduled to show the “Yankees Classic” from ’05 where A-Rod went deep against Schilling (making his debut as Red Sox closer) in Fenway. I guess the powers that be thought it was too soon to highlight Alex.

  10. Brad February 10th, 2009 at 9:20 am

As an interviewer Gammons failed . . .

    Rockstar treatment for you Pete!

    Brad-

Raissman’s the classic critic: never satisfied with anyone except himself. I skip his column (and the rest of the Daily News)as a general rule. Mushnick at the Post is better.

  13. KM February 10th, 2009 at 9:26 am

    @Brad
Is that guy’s mustache real? I sure hope so.

  14. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 9:26 am

Bottom line no matter what Alex said how he said it he would be criticized.

  15. ray (sox fan) February 10th, 2009 at 9:28 am

In this whole series of events with Arod it is interesting that in some ways there are people who are supporting him that have never really liked him or supported him.

I have heard several Boston sports commentators highlight the fact that clearly Arod was targeted since there were over a 100 names on the list.

Clearly Arod is guilty of taking the juice and lying about it, but it is still not right that he was singled out. It is interesting that even Schilling is saying the other names need to be released.

This morning on a Fox sports radio program Seth Everett who often criticizes Arod also lamented the fact that Arod has been a target in this. He speculates that maybe even Arod’s ex Cynthia was one of the four sources that confirmed Arod was on the list. Very interesting possibility.

  16. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 9:32 am

I disagree with Cynthia could be a source. While he cheated on her and was a dog, their divorce seemed amicable. We didn’t hear about fighting over child support, alimony, homes etc. When it comes down to it he is the father of her children. Why would she want her children s father dragged through the mud?

  17. William Buckner February 10th, 2009 at 9:32 am

Can someone show me to a link if there has been any truth to what Arod accused Selena Robert’s of?

If true, she is a real scumbag, especially in the aftermath of her work with the Duke LAX team. I’m all for investigative journalism, but if AROD is right, this is closer to TMZ then WSJ.

  18. Andrew February 10th, 2009 at 9:33 am

A-Rod being targeted just means that a star player on another team (like the Red Sox) was spared, but it doesn’t change the situation: one sole “big name” was unearthed and the story exploded, and there is no way of guaranteeing that this type of thing won’t play out elsewhere either during the ’09 season, next offseason, etc. It would be foolish of sports talkers to look at this as something wholly exclusive to New York and A-Rod, because the circus could roll in to their city at any time.

  19. Laura - Ready to move on from the controversy! February 10th, 2009 at 9:34 am

“This morning on a Fox sports radio program Seth Everett who often criticizes Arod also lamented the fact that Arod has been a target in this. He speculates that maybe even Arod’s ex Cynthia was one of the four sources that confirmed Arod was on the list. Very interesting possibility.”

She was also at the house when he did his interview with Gammons. That’s not something someone does if they just ratted you out.

  20. Tarheelyank February 10th, 2009 at 9:41 am

    William Buckner
Selena Roberts was on MLB last night. I will paraphrase. She said she went to the island he lives on (unannounced). Approached the guard who was new. Was told she couldn’t go on the island. She then asked if the Island was public or private. Somebody called the police to find out if the Island was public or private (?) She was told by Police that it was public. So she drove to his house. She claims she didn’t see his car so she left. (did she stop, snoop around, she didn’t say). To me it raise more questions then it answers. If you would ask Verducci, he would tell you she was an angel and it was responsible journalism.

  21. rodg12 February 10th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Pete – To be fair, since I was bashing your reporting on earlier posts, your posts since the ARod comparing stats post have been fair and balanced. Even throwing a little humor in with the ARod will save the newspapers post. You’re article covering the situation was also good. Hopefully, everyone can move on from this and get back to just talking about baseball.

  22. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Were you in the house with Cynthia? Did they show her on the air? Did I miss something?

  23. William Buckner February 10th, 2009 at 9:43 am

Verducci is a coworker, I doubt he’s throwing her under the bus. That said, there is track record here from her of suspect journalism.

  24. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 9:44 am

I don’t buy that she drove by the house and didn’t see a car so she left. She would go through all that trouble of having them call police to see if she can get on, than just drive away. Doesn’t he have a garage? couldn’t the car have been there. I wouldn’t doubt if she got in and walked around. Not one bit.

  25. Glenn February 10th, 2009 at 9:44 am

How many people today will push the gas pedal in their car a little more and speed up to where they want to be with hopes of not getting nailed by a cop ?
It’s human nature that everybody wants an edge with something they do. If baseball is bad with steroid use it can be well imagined just how bad football must be. It can’t be imagined that an average looking player will ever make an impact in a game that requires better than average strength.

  26. rodg12 February 10th, 2009 at 9:45 am

I still can’t believe Verducci said Roberts has an impeccable track record. That was just a terrible statement. No way you could say that someone who did what she did to those Duke lacrosse players and then never apologized for it has an impeccable track record. What an idiot.

  27. Steve B February 10th, 2009 at 9:46 am

“As an interviewer Gammons failed . .”

Not exactly a news flash. Aside from Kurkjian (sp?), there does not a exist a more pro-player analyst out there than Gammons. They knew he was a soft touch. They’d never do it with Costas or any other truly skilled interviewer, who may ask a tough follow up question or two. I’m not sure I believe Arod truly “stopped being stupid” on that fateful in day in 2003, but there’s no doubt his people are not at all stupid.

    =============================================

I don’t think it was Cynthia. They seems to get along now and as others said..she was there with him yesterday during the interview and why would she put the father of her children through this?

Unless of course she is pure evil, is putting on an act for him and just doesn’t care.

  29. Tarheelyank February 10th, 2009 at 9:48 am

    jennifer
I agree. If you hear her tell it, it sounds all innocent. But it if you think about it, sounds more like “Enquire” type of journalism. She was snooping around.

  30. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 9:49 am

How do we all know she was there. Are there pics or something?

  31. William Buckner February 10th, 2009 at 9:49 am

If he (Arod) does not have any proof of what he’s accused Roberts of, then he should not have brought it up.

But if he does, she should’ve taken a lesson on admission.

  32. Tom February 10th, 2009 at 9:52 am

Christina, Gammons said so on Sportscenter ysterday.

“Gammons also noted that Rodriguez’ ex-wife, Cynthia, was with him for the interview.”

  35. Tarheelyank February 10th, 2009 at 9:53 am

I think the “Verducci effect” should have a new defination.

“A journalist who has such obvious disdain, hatred, envy etc, that any written or oral word should be taken to be untrue.

Feel free to refine that defination.

  36. pat m in ct (different Pat M) February 10th, 2009 at 9:54 am

Christina-I think Gammons said that she was there, along with Boras, when he was asked about it later on.

  37. Bronx Jeers February 10th, 2009 at 9:54 am

Nice salvation army grade obsucre TV movie poster.

Raissman’s alright. Not really a sports columnist as much as a sports media columnist. I believe he coined the term Al Yankazeera.

He’s right on with his assessment of Gammons.

Honestly I think Costas would have been the better choice for ARod. Sure the questions would have been tougher but Alex would have come off sounding more sincere. Gammons gave him the room to allow him to revert into the pomopous/out of-touch/ foot in mouth a-hole that he is.

  38. Tarheelyank February 10th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Christina there was a police report saying that she was there “Enquireing” ( :D ) if the island was public or private.

  39. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Ok, thanks guys, I wasn’t sure how people knew she was there. Thats good she was supporting him.

  40. Drew February 10th, 2009 at 9:57 am

    Enquireing?

Yep, that’s definitely a police report. I am lucky enough to read a lot of police reports and they are always a continuing source of amusement.

  41. Mrs. Kekich February 10th, 2009 at 9:58 am

Gammons is an embarrassment. He did yankee fans a favor yesterday by letting Alex spin his lies. Didn’t press him on anything. So much for his anti-yankee bias most here always claim.

  42. Tarheelyank February 10th, 2009 at 9:58 am

define defination-somebody who doesn’t know how to spell :D

  43. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 10:03 am

We need a spell check here.

  44. Phil February 10th, 2009 at 10:04 am

Yikes! What’s that on my TV?????????

  45. Tom February 10th, 2009 at 10:05 am

I may be being rash, but I am considering canceling my SI subscription. I don’t have a problem per se with the reporting of Verducii or Roberts. I have a problem with their lack of disclosure. Both Verduci and Roberts have finacial incentives tied into their reporting on this story-they both have books about the Yankees and A-rod, which may “color” their points of veiw on the matter.

  46. PAT M. February 10th, 2009 at 10:05 am

Gammons may have become a more slanted Chowda head as of late, but he loves the game of baseball and will protect it as much as possible…I think that’s why he was selected to do the interview….They knew he’d conduct it with the game in mind……

  47. BettorFan February 10th, 2009 at 10:07 am

Where are the M&M’s and Fiji water?

  48. Brett February 10th, 2009 at 10:08 am

    Pete,

great job on First Take this morning

  49. Brad February 10th, 2009 at 10:10 am

Yeah Pete, all the thunder of Torre’s book has suddenly disappeared. Clerks at book stores will soon be dusting off the unsold copies.

  50. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 10:11 am

This guy is making the point I was trying to make last night. Theres no way he was taking this stuff, not knowing what exactly he was injecting into himself.

  51. Steve B February 10th, 2009 at 10:11 am

“Both Verduci and Roberts have finacial incentives tied into their reporting on this story-they both have books about the Yankees and A-rod, which may “color” their points of veiw on the matter.”

If you know and I know that both have books out or coming out, then hasn’t that info pretty much been disclosed???

  52. Phil February 10th, 2009 at 10:12 am

This Ferral guy is a trainwreck. Have another scotch and cigarette, monkey.

  53. Tarheelyank February 10th, 2009 at 10:15 am

    Steve B

What about joe blow in Dubuque, do they know?

  54. Tom February 10th, 2009 at 10:16 am

Not to everybody, Steve. We didn’t find out about Roberts’ book untill after the A-rod story hit. Nor, does she mention it when she’s interveiwed. Plus, Verduci hid the fact he had a book comming out while writing very critical article on SI about the Yankees front office.

  55. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 10th, 2009 at 10:21 am

People searching for info on Selena Roberts found out that she was coming out with a book on Alex. Has she even mentioned yet that she is writing a book on him? Unless I missed it, I haven’t heard her state that.

I think I read somewhere yesterday someone say she came across this steroids info while researching for an SI baseball preview article? snort. yeah..I’m sure that was what happened.

  56. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 10:22 am

Christina if you download firefox it has spell check built in.

  57. Christina February 10th, 2009 at 10:23 am

Due for release??? Ironically, 1 week before the Yankees go to Texas…
I have seen her interviewed AT LEAST 10 times and not once has she been asked about this book.

  60. Steve B February 10th, 2009 at 10:28 am

“We didn’t find out about Roberts’ book untill after the A-rod story hit. Nor, does she mention it when she’s interveiwed.”

OK. Fair enough. Not sure it makes a difference in this particular matter though. Her history aside, her story in this particular case was 100% true. When that’s the case, motivation doesn’t mean much. It’s not like she arbitrarily threw something out there. This wasn’t “Arod is a tax cheat”, or “Arod is a serial philanderer”, or “Arod molests poodles”. She had information. She confirmed it with four sources, gave Arod the chance to comment on it, than ran with it. This time, she did it right. When/if her book comes out, I’ll personally get nowhere near it, but I don’t have much issue with how she dealt with this particular story.

  61. saucY February 10th, 2009 at 10:30 am

that room doesn’t look all that green…

  62. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 10th, 2009 at 10:58 am

“I don’t buy that she drove by the house and didn’t see a car so she left. She would go through all that trouble of having them call police to see if she can get on, than just drive away. Doesn’t he have a garage? couldn’t the car have been there. I wouldn’t doubt if she got in and walked around. Not one bit.”

jen, if you heard her on MLB TV, floundering about with her “explanations” about why she just ended up being everywhere Arod said she was, you wouldn’t have believed a word she said. Arod may be a lot of things but he isn’t a total burnout. He was not going to pull fictions about
Roberts out of the air since all of that was going to be verifiable. Can you imagine the audacity of that witch going to his home? I absolutely believe she got out of her car and probably went to the door. Or layed on the horn? She’s that obnoxious.

Anyone who feels the need to go and ask high-school friends of Alex whether he was taking steroids is doing more than just “reporting the facts.” When you see some NY Times has-been trying to delve into the most personal aspects of someone’s life, that person is doing more than just “reporting the facts.” It is obvious that ruining peoples’ lives doesn’t bother her a bit; if she can get her name in lights and a big fat paycheck, her day is made.

Does anyone really believe that she was given only one name on a list of 104? If so, I have some land under water in Florida for you at a very good price. Anyone who had one name had 103 more. Is it any coincidence that she gets that one name and is at the same time getting ready to publish a tabloid-worthy book on that person’s life?

I have had my own problems with loving Arod many times during his Yankee tenure. I have called him Afraud, wished he had never come to the Yankees, felt that he was stealing his money, was thrilled to death when Beelzebub Boras said he was opting out, was sick to death when he opted back in, etc. etc. etc. I was really both saddened and disgusted to find out that he took steroids. But none of that makes anything about Seloona Roberts and her modus operandi acceptable or correct.

And let us not forget that she blithely and happily provided leaked and court-protected information because you know, she’s bigger than the law! After all, she’s Selena Roberts!

If the laws of karma truly operate, her downward spiral will definitely end ip continuing.
