Wang is ready to get going

How about some baseball?

When I walked into the complex this morning, the first two guys I saw were Chien-Ming Wang and Phil Hughes.

The Wanger looked good. He got to Arizona in mid January and worked out for several weeks with a trainer before coming here. He has thrown off the mound twice and will again tomorrow.

Wang said his foot has totally healed and he is ready to go. I asked him about the Yankees adding CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett.

“Great for us,” he said. “We have a good rotation. I was glad.”

Wang has long resisted the idea of being considered the ace of the staff. Part of it is his personality, part of it is cultural. He defers to older players and always has. The guy is a competitor on the mound but quiet off it. Look for him to have a big year as he tries to make up for missing so much time. He also was relieved not to face another arbitration hearing.

Hughes has been in Tampa for a while as well. It speaks well of him that he showed up early knowing it’s a long-shot that he makes the team.

Dave Eiland and Rob Thomson were there with the players. Those two guys get after it. Also saw scouting director Damon Oppenheimer, who was watching workouts.

Yeah, can’t wait to see Wang pitch again!

  2. Andrew February 10th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Hope Hughes can stay on the mound this year. He does that, he will definitely contribute to the major league club at some point.

  3. jennifer February 10th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

I can’t believe Kay and Don were giving Andy more credit in his admission. Andy read from a piece of paper that was written for him by his lawyers!! Yes Alex was obviously told what he could and could not say, what line he couldn’t cross, but he didn’t do it from a piece of paper!

  4. Gman February 10th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

For the first time in too many years we have a “big three” at the top of the rotation.

  5. rodg12 February 10th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

    Pete -
Any idea who the minor league guy standing next to Jeter is in this pic?

  6. William Buckner February 10th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

As a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton native, it’s good to hear Hughes is working hard. I look forward to seeing him pitcher this year.

  7. G. Love February 10th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

All Hughes has to do is progress in his development.

The opportunity will be there for him this season.

If he shows the progress he needs to show and earns the starts, he’ll be taking over Andy’s spot next year.

  8. Al from BK February 10th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Wang is a great player him missing for half the year makes me forget how good our rotation can be this year.

  9. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 10th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Man I missed Wang last year.

  10. five iron from fenway February 10th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I think Hughes will make a significant contribution to the big club this year. It seems we always go about 7-8 deep in terms of starting pitchers. If Phil can get his secondary stuff working and consolidate what from the reports appear to be gains in velocity and effectiveness in AZ (and of course stay healthy) it would be tremendous.
I also think a dark horse to help in NY is Alan Horne. He is recovering from surgery but is throwing again. He has great stuff – again issue is health.

  11. Vincent February 10th, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Wow, this post just restored my excitement for the season.

  12. Andrew February 10th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Also, and I think someone posted this on other thread(s), but PECOTA puts the Yankees at 97 wins this year, second best projected record to Boston’s 98 wins. Nate Silver isn’t usually off by much with these types of things (see: FiveThirtyEight, 2008 election), so that should give Yankees fans hope for ’09 in the wake of a pretty brutal few weeks.

  13. Laura - Ready to move on from the controversy! February 10th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

The first question the media should ask Girardi is what slot does he see the Wanger in. I’d put him second behind CC and let AJ follow.

  14. SJ44 February 10th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Bill Madden: “The Yankees have no farm system”?

Any idea where he said this? Francesa’s show?

    Here’s a tip Bill….

Try watching some Yankee minor league games and be able to name 5 kids in the system before you talk about something you know nothing about.

You were also one of the “experts” who declared that Craig Hansen was going to decide the 2005 pennant race after he was drafted by the Red Sox.

You KILLED the Yankees for not taking a player who was “going to decide the 2005 race”.

How did that prediction work for ‘ya?

If I want to listen/read nonsense from bitter old men, I will hang out at my local bagel shop.

When I listen/read sportswriters, I want them to have at least a working knowledge of the subject matter they write/talk about.

I don’t expect them to be experts on every bit of minutue re: the Yankees. I do expect them to have some knowledge of the farm system though and Madden has none.

Which is why he should just keep hanging outside Hank and Hal’s offices to see if they will let him talk to George again.

It was the only use he had as a sportswriter for years. He had direct access to George. These days, he has no access to anybody of power with the Yankees which is why he comes across as a bitter old man.

  15. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 10th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

    PECOTA’s out?

Now I know we’re getting close.

  16. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 10th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Madden was probably on Francesa’s show. He is to be on with Kay in the 3pm hour(I believe)

  17. Joey Vegas February 10th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

“Dave Eiland and Rob Thomson were there with the players. Those two guys get after it.”

    What exactly does this mean?

  18. SJ44 February 10th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

    SA,

That’s great. We get the “joy” of listening to his bitter ramblings. What entertaiment!

  19. NYYanksFan February 10th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

    SJ

It was on Francessa during a rant about how Cashman wanted to build the team through the farm but overestimated the farm he had.

  20. SJ44 February 10th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

“entertainment”. Would be nice if I could spell.

  22. SJ44 February 10th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Geez, now Kay is on the “what do we tell the children” kick?

    Why is that so complicated?

You tell your kids there are ramifications for EVERYTHING you do. Even Alex Rodriquez can’t buy his way out of being shamed.

If anything, its a GREAT lesson for kids. They get to see what happens when you do something wrong.

God, I hate when the media goes into morality mode. Makes me nuts.

  23. GreenBeret7 February 10th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

I think that the quotes from Wang sounded pretty phony. He didn’t seem very honest about having the NYY signing two starters that might be better than him and certainly being paid more. I’ll never have respect for such a phony again. Wang, why not just come out and admit that you’re jealous?

  24. Phil February 10th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Bill Madden should get a dollar anytime any of the other reporters writes something dumb. He’d make a fortune off of Ian O’Connor and some of the others.

btw, I think Phil Hughes spent a big part of his offseason at a high performance training center down in San Diego.

  25. Al from BK February 10th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

PECOTA has us getting 97 wins but still finishing second behind the sux. However it does say we allow the least runs in baseball.

  26. CaptainsCorner February 10th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Madden was on with Francesa. They are perfect for one another because they both are negative and nothing is good enough for either of them. I want to see them or anyone go threw what Arod went threw then have to go on tv be extremely nervous and have to talk about it…and not say something 100% perfect. Francesa sounds like such a cry baby, who thinks he is perfect.

  27. Andrew February 10th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Oh Bill Madden, remember when you wanted the Yankees’ team to look like this for 2009?:

    http://tinyurl.com/ce7mef

Yes, a grand total of ZERO of those acquisitions were made this offseason. So, Bill Madden: completely understands what’s going on with the Yankees, seriously, he swears!

Wang is going to lead the Yankees with 21 wins this year. You will be able to see Teixeira’s impact on defense with Wang more than any other pitcher. I also think Cano is going to have his best year at 2nd base playing next to Teixeira.

  30. darkmoonfire February 10th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

    Yay for Wang!

I never get why so many people are down on him. (Well, I do I guess, it’s because he isn’t a strikeout guy, and shallow folks like fireworks.)

He’s a great pitcher, and a great guy, and I really hope he wins 20 games this year. He can, and he will sooner rather than later.

  31. GreenBeret7 February 10th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

SJ, has anybody said when these urine tests were taken in 2003? Spring training…mid-season?

  32. Al from BK February 10th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

“I think that the quotes from Wang sounded pretty phony. He didn’t seem very honest about having the NYY signing two starters that might be better than him and certainly being paid more. I’ll never have respect for such a phony again. Wang, why not just come out and admit that you’re jealous?”

Are you serious GB? Its not part of Asian culture to show jealousy of your teammates and its also not Wanger’s personality. Secondly he cannot speak english and this quote was likely rendered through a translator.

  33. Steve B February 10th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

“You KILLED the Yankees for not taking a player who was “going to decide the 2005 race”.

How did that prediction work for ‘ya?”

In fairness, it went about as well as Cashman’s guess on Carl Henry, 9 picks prior to Hansen did.

Draft hindsight, like all others, is always 20/20. Cashman knows a lot more about this than Madden, yet I’m not prepared to kill him for leaving Ellsbury, Matt Garza, Joey Devine and Colby Rasmus on the table when Henry’s name was called.

  34. wanger February 10th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

can’t wait. I hope wang gets off to as good of a start as last season.

  35. rodg12 February 10th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Might be Brandon, but Pete didn’t mention him being there which led me to believe it was a minor leaguer. I just went back to the thread the pic is on. Someone there suggested Colin Curtis. Maybe it’s him???

  36. Doreen February 10th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

    SJ44 -

I agree. It’s a great teaching opportunity. It’s just another layer of parenting.

  37. no.27 February 10th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I don’t think there’s anyone that follows baseball that thinks Bill Madden knows what he’s talking about. It’s like the Daily News pays him to be a Howard Stern shock reporter but didn’t ever tell him. It would be OK if he wrote all these articles just to stir up conversation, but I really think he believes all the dumb stuff he says and writes.

How much do you think a guy like him gets paid? With so many people getting fired in America, how does someone like this have a job?

  38. Ham Fighters February 10th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

can everybody just please leave ‘the children’ out of this. your kid isnt going to decide whether or not to use drugs because of what arod did.

and after, what 5 years in ny, arod probably cant find his boyhood home without his garmin.

    GB,

Good point. I think somebody should have asked him about whether or not he takes any chinese herbs. ‘Ya know, that stuff can do crazy things to you.

He wasn’t open and honest about how he rehabbed his foot. I would expect more honesty from him.

Did he ever ask Arod or Andy Pettitte for workout advice?

I don’t know, not enough hard hitting questions. I think the media is allowing Wang to skate without being open and honest.

For those who needed the disclaimer: I am being sarcastic.

  40. Peter Abraham February 10th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I love how some nitwit reads Wang’s quotes and decides he’s a phony. Never mind that I was standing there and know the guy very well.

SJ, obviously, what I said was dripping with sarcasm. I realze there are a lot that can’t understand that goes that far overboard. I always thought that most fans/people in the media completely disregards this guys talents and slights him, year after year. He has a lot of Mel Stottlemyre in him. He throws a few ticks harder, but, like Stottlemyre, he doesn’t rattle….regardless of the two Cleveland games. You know that the bullpen has to love the guy.

Man, some people are completely ignorant.

  72. no.27 February 10th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Out of all the guys in the rotation, Wang is the one the Yankees can count on the most. CC obviously has the most talent, but coming to the Bronx is never easy on a pitcher. Wang has proven he can handle the pressure of pitching in NY and in Fenway.

  73. Tom February 10th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

The Yankees may have two of the most underrated players in baseball on their team-Matsui and Wang.

  74. SJ44 February 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

    Getting back to baseball…..

How great is it to look at the rotation and see 4 guys who can legitimately throw 185-210 innings this year.

Its going to make the bullpen so much more effective because they won’t have to throw as many innings.

When Joba Chamberlain is your 5th starter, that’s some starting staff.

They just need a season of good health. If they get it, this is one powerful team.

  75. Bronx Jeers February 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

I Hughes makes the team, wouldn’t that mean that something went wrong. Let’s not go there.

Honest to God, Madden sounds like a guy named Bernie who is a customer at my bagel shop.

Bernie comes in everyday complaining about something…

“How can they NOT have 7 Grain Bagels today”?

    “The coffee is too bitter”!

“Can’t you people make the line go faster”?

I swear, he sounds like Bernie when he gets all worked up.

Posada won’t likely be catching a lot of games in the early cold weather and against teams that run, at least, not right off. If ever there was a time to teach pitchers like Wang, in particular, to keep runners close, it’s this year.

As far as Madden making the “integrity argument”, did he vote for Orlando Cepeda?

All Cepeda did was get arrested for selling pot. A convicted drug dealer is in the Hall of Fame.

That’s why its hard to get on the moral soapbox in sports.

Too many guys are flawed. Even the guys who vote for the HOF are flawed.

Although, you will never get them to admit it.

  102. Yankee Trader February 10th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

    At last, some baseball talk.

Any interest in righty Marlon Byrd to platoon in CF with either Cabrera or Gardner who both hit lefties poorly? Or do we shy away from Ranger players, even though he was with the Phillies in 2002-2003? Texas could use pitching, since they now have an overabundance of outfielders.

Adam Kennedy anyone on a spring invite?

Wouldn’t be something if Manny is on the list and his name is divulged tomorrow. Is he signed for Abreu money or not at all?

  103. Vincent February 10th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

I agree about Posada being the key to the season. If he can’t catch you have to take one of the kids out of center and replace them with a bat like Swisher. Hopefully, Gardner or Melky bring their bats this year and force the Yanks to keep them in the field.

  104. randy l February 10th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

“I still think Posada’s shoulder is the key to the season”

it’s huge. a clue to how he feels right now is how far his long toss is . he’s got a lot of time, but he’s not totally going to know anything until he airs it out. that’s probably going to be awhile.

Madden said something interesting about this will never die and I’m paraphrasing, because the media will be all over this like dogs.

Why can’t the media be all over the government and how we are in the situation we are in today and don’t give the same war BS, I understand that is a problem…but the US has been many wars and we never went into the second coming of the Great Depression.

I want the media to find out who was involved with changing the banking industry…

Why people who couldn’t afford mortgages…were able to get no-income verification loans…

Why ACORN was never fully discussed in regards to voter fraud…

Why we found out that Daschle cheated on his taxes only when he had to bow out of a Presidential appointment…

There are so many other things that the media could do instead of investigating steroids in baseball.

The question really is if there were no sports to cover would half of these reporters even be in journalism???

Sarcasm’s sometimes hard to pick up in a quick blog comment. I didn’t catch it at first either, with the Wang is phony comment, but then I saw GB’s handle and thought either he had to be kidding or he had an imposter.

I’m glad to hear Wang’s feeling it. Another 19 win season from him or anything close to it would be great for the team. I’m sure he’s pumped about having a few other pitchers on the team who can be on par with him or better, because that just makes the whole team that much better. We needed that in a big way last year when Wang went down, and the only guy who could step up was Moose. And we all know the result of that.

There will still be those who knock him, but he’s pretty damn good and pretty damn valuable, even if he isn’t the second coming of Pedro from 10 years ago. We flat out need the guy.

Stronger than 1996 team- that was a team of fate and late comebacks, IMO.

Stronger than 2000 team in all positions except CF and RF, with Bernie and Paul. 2009 better pitching staff also.

1998 team was a very good team with Jeter and Brosius O’Neill, and Tino having excellent years along with Strawberry. Pitching, both starters and relievers put up good numbers. 1998 vs 2009 would be a good match[if no cloud hanging over A-Rod].

However my favorite team, at least powerwise were the 1961 Yankees with Mantle, Maris, Howard, Blanchard,Skowron, Yogi, all of whom had > 20 homers. The pitching staff wasn’t too shabby either.

  152. GreenBeret7 February 10th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

to all people curious about “Chinese herb” and “Wang’s personality”: Wang didn’t take any herb during his curing or rehabilitation either in U.S. or when he was in Taiwan, as no one knows what might be contained in the herb and how long it can last, and what the League might do to him if there is anything prohibited found in his body – in Taiwan we don’t have a system good enough to detect what’s inside the herbs – we only know what herb cures what illness. As for Wang’s personality. What Taiwanese are educated when someone better is lining before you, is to try more harder in order to get better performance than him, or just keep your mouth shut if you don’t even have the attempt to try. Wang might be 27 or 28, but mentally he’s just a pure kid. He’s athlete not actor.

  167. Victor February 11th, 2009 at 9:38 am

Wang is really a greatest player in Yankees. He never shows off like others and just practices. This is the Esatern culture rather than the Western one.
