The numbers game

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 11, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Came over to Big Stein Field and picked up a roster.

Nick Swisher has 33. Brian Bruney has 38. Angel Berroa has 14. 19 for Kevin Cash. Phil Hughes went back to 65.

Yes, I’ll post about anything. But people had asked about Swish.

Hughes needs to make up his mind. I’m sure a ton of people who bought his first “number-change” jersey are angry that he reverted back to 65.

  2. Phil February 11th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

    Good stuff, thanks Pete.

  3. will February 11th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

is the minor league camp open to anyone or just journalist??

  4. Jeff NJ February 11th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

I doubt Phil chose to go back to that high of a number, but the team doesn’t want a guy who is slated to start in the minors hogging up the low numbers.

  5. Phil February 11th, 2009 at 12:59 pm

    Jeff

you’re wrong. Hughes announced on his blog that he was going back to his original ML number. He wanted to.

    Inb4 “6″ jokes

“I doubt Phil chose to go back to that high of a number, but the team doesn’t want a guy who is slated to start in the minors hogging up the low numbers.”

They had no problem giving Berroa a low number, and he’s vying for a spot. I doubt they forced Hughes to switch back. He’s there golden boy.

  8. E-Man February 11th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Phil doesn’t want anymore comparisions to Nolan Ryan.

  9. jennifer February 11th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

I believe Phil switched back to 65 at the end of last season.

  10. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 11th, 2009 at 1:07 pm

I got no issues with any of the numbers. I’d find it interesting, though, to hear why they chose those numbers if they did choose them.

    Good news for Mets Fans!

They get to join the party with a tell-all book:

Angel Berroa should not be wearing Sweet Lou Pinella’s Yankee number.

    I’m outraged.

    Okay, I’m not.

  13. jennifer February 11th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

e-man I can’t tell you how happy I am that that book is coming out. Maybe we’ll be knocked off the back pages for a few days.

I wonder if Daryl will walk around telling people just read the book, you understand it, in the context of the book.

For those who bought a #34 jersey can still wear it while cheering Burnett, no?

My advice to Hughes…go back to playing T-Ball, maybe you won’t get hurt all the time….

  19. Russell NY February 11th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

“My advice to Hughes…go back to playing T-Ball, maybe you won’t get hurt all the time….”

Aren’t you the person the other day that was insulting ARod? Why do Boston/Mets fans hang out in a Yankee blog?

  20. Russell NY February 11th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

“hey does anyone know what mad dog said about francessa today?”

I wish I knew. But I bet he says it at the end of the show so no one can call up and comment. Lets see how Fatcessa deals with a former teammate talking smack about him.

  21. Steve B February 11th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

    “Who gets #6??”

    I’m hoping nobody.

Someone has to take the high road in this Torre/Yankees thing. Leaving #6 be would be a good way for the Yankee organization to be there first. Like it or not, Torre is going to Coop as the manager of the Yankees. To dole out #6 to someone would be bad form.

  22. Al from BK February 11th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Eh, I just hope Hughes stays healthy.

  23. MYGIRLS February 11th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Russell, it is A FRAUD, he’s a cheater (not only in baseball), he is a LIAR, he is A FRAUD. Yanks should release him, eat his money and save some face. The Fraud’s interview w/Gammons was horrible. All A FRAUD cares about is $$$$$, that is it. He’s never won a title at any level. He’s a disgrace to MLB

  24. MYGIRLS February 11th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

At least Pavano Hughes pitches 10 innings a year, got to give the guy a little credit over the FRAUD

  25. Tarheelyank February 11th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

    Russell
consider it comic relief. But do not feed.

  26. MYGIRLS February 11th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

During this year, Matsui, Posada, Damon will all miss time w/injuries along w/Pavano Hughes. This happens to a team that is very old.

  27. ditmars1929 February 11th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Steve B – I was just joking. #6 is, and should be, Torre’s.

And who the heck cares what “Mad Dog” says? The man is a fool.

does anyone listen to russo on satelite radio? Francessa has said he’ll address comments made by russo about him or the old show that dog recently made (in light of sirius radio being in trouble), what were those comments, anyone know?

hey does anyone know what mad dog said about francessa today?

    ===============================================

    This?

    http://weblogs.newsday.com/spo.....not_r.html

Chris Russo was on with fellow Sirius Satellite Radio personality Howard Stern this morning, and said many interesting things.

Among them was that even if financially troubled Sirius XM gets new ownership that seeks to trim his $3 million-a-year salary, he will not leave for terrestrial radio – that includes, presumably, a potential return to WFAN.

Stern tried repeatedly to prod Russo into ripping his old partner Mike Francesa but mostly was unsuccessful, other than Russo agreeing that it was a mistake for Francesa to set up away from Radio Row during Super Bowl week.

Agreed Randy. What this room should have is some kinda chat software. Maybe one where you can block a certain persons comments. That would be awesome. Though I think people would comment every 5 seconds so there should be a limit of 1 post per 2 minutes or somethin.

Wait till Ortiz and Manny are outed for using steroids. It will happen, its only a matter of time.

Anyways, Hughes wore 65 when he came up to the Majors in August/September because Marte had taken 34.

And now that Burnett has 34, Hughes couldnt go back to 34.

    More here. Scroll down

    http://www.marksfriggin.com/news.htm#wed

    Some of it:

Howard said that Chris signed on to get $3 million a year there. He asked Chris if he would buckle or go back to terrestrial radio. Chris said that he will not go back to terrestrial radio. Chris said that he might buckle if they asked him to renegotiate. Howard asked him how his show is going. Chris said that he doesn’t curse but he allows it on his show. Chris said that he might throw Howard a bone with a curse once in awhile but on his own show he doesn’t curse.

Howard asked Chris how he thinks his old partner Mike Francesa is doing with his show. Chris said it depends on who you ask. He said that the ratings seem the same over there at WFAN. Chris said that he’s spoken to some people who say that they’re getting murdered in some areas. Chris said that he really doesn’t know the answer to all of that and he has no reason to lie about that.

Howard asked Chris if Mike needed him or if Chris needed Mike. Howard said it seems that Mike is the loser in all of this. Howard said that he should have the ratings there and asked Gary to get them for him. Howard asked Chris if he’s heard Mike’s show at all. Chris said that he hasn’t watched or listened to him at all.

So the Yankees should eat 300 million and lose A-Rod’s bat for the next 9 years just so we could “save face”? Bottom line A-Rod makes the Yankees lots of money and this will eventually blow over. They are willing to wait out the storm to be around for A-Rods renaissance.

  42. bobshantz February 11th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Berroa 14? Sweet Lou, Moose, Gene Woodling, and even the Fat Toad. Didn’t Cano wear it briefly?

“Apparently the Diamondbacks are keeping open the lines of communication with reliever Juan Cruz’s camp, but it sounds doubtful that a deal will occur, probably because of draft picks.”, they would be forfeiting the chance to collect compensation picks.”

I wonder what they would think if the Yankees signed him. doh :D

  44. Mrs. Kekich February 11th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

“I hope this judge has the intestinal fortitude to demand and full and complete investigation to find out who did it.”

SJ44, upholder of the law! I’m sure you’d be demanding an investigation if it was Ortiz name leaked! Not.

Doesn’t the government have more important things to do than worry about who leaked info about a multi-millionaire ballplayer? who wouldn’t have multi-millions if he didn’t juice?

  45. UtilityMan February 11th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

    Thanks Pete,for that information!!
I had read somewheres, that Hughes likes having a #5 in his Jersey Number…he wore #50 with Trenton Thunder.
Last year he wore 34 which equals 7..because that is the # his mother likes.
Pete has #45 been burned or buried in concrete somewheres???

  46. Bronx Jeers February 11th, 2009 at 1:43 pm

  49. Doreen February 11th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

  50. bobshantz February 11th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

For the youthful among you, by Moose I of course meant my old teammate Bill Skowron, not the more recent Moose version.

  51. Tarheelyank February 11th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

I wonder if we could cut a deal with somebody who wants Juan Cruz but doesn’t want to give up a first round pick. Kind of like a sign and trade.

That would be cruel. I think thats why I like it.

  52. AD February 11th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Oh and Pavano is not on the yanks anymore… why are you bringing up pavano.. the unrealistic possibility that the yanks drop arod… and questioning PHUGH’s whork ethic over pavano…. you must ride the short bus, or be a hater…

  55. dennis-costanza(sox fan) February 11th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

    Good Afternoon-

Good to read about spring training activities rather than all the other negative news.

I just read Baseball Prospectus predictions for 2009.

It has the Sox at 98 wins, Yanks at 97, TB at 92.

It has Cleve at 84 wins to take the Cental. They are the only team in the Central to be over .500. The have the White Sox in last place at 74 wins.

In the West, they have Oakland winning the division with 82 wins. They have everyone else in the division including the Angels under .500.

THey are predicting that the AL East will have 4teams (tor at .500) and the rest of the league will have 2 teams over .500. This is surprising to me. If I had to predict the East I would have:

    NNY- 99
    Bos- 92
    TB- 90
    Tor- 81
    Balt-75

Even with Price in the rotation I think they are bound for a tad more injuries/adversities. JMO

    Repectfully. -dennis

  58. Doreen February 11th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

    utilityMan -

ANY other number would be a better choice for Alex. Pick one out of a hat. And banish 13 to the dustpins for all eternity. (Like hotels with no notation of a 13th floor – just don’t even acknowledge it exists, which is not the same as retiring a number.)

  59. Doreen February 11th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

um, that would be dustBins, not dustPins.

  60. UtilityMan February 11th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Isnt it also true that there are no #13 tables at a wedding reception???

  61. SJ44 February 11th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

    Actually Mrs. Kekich I would.

It doesn’t matter who got nailed because of the leak. It matters that the leak took place.

That’s the concern from some of us in the legal community in this entire sorry episode.

It seems to me the government really doesn’t have something “better to do” or a member of it wouldn’t be breaking the law to try and nail somebody.

Try reading some materials about the law sometime. You might actually learn something.

  62. Doreen February 11th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

    UtilityMan -

I never heard of that one. I can’t remember how it was at my wedding. It would make sense, though.

  64. SJ44 February 11th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Tarheel, I doubt that any team will give up enough talent to cover Cruz. NYY would need the talent equal to what Cruz is plus the talent to cover NYY 4th round pick. Also, not sure if the rule is still in effect that free agents need to be kept and not traded until 15 June.

“I just read Baseball Prospectus predictions for 2009.

    dennis-

BP sees Posada getting only about 300 PAs, and not very good ones at that. They think Jeter’s SLG will continue the decline it showed last year, instead of bouncing back. They don’t see much production coming from CF. They see Nady getting about 500 PAs with regression toward his performance prior to 2008.

It all adds up to less offense than a lot of us are hoping for, which explains their prediction.

Just remember, BP saw us winning 97 games last year, so they are not infallible.

    SJ –

Going back to my previous question on whether the leak will be found or not … you suggested that if the government or the court decided to put enough money into it, they’d probably find the leak.

Is A-Rod himself in a position to pursue any legal action against whatever person or entity is involved in the leak? I’m guessing he’s got a few bucks to spare.

not sure about BP, but MARCEL’s 2008 projections:

    Kennedy 4-3 with a 3.98 ERA

    wow

  84. Ed - spring training can't start soon enough February 11th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

SOS: I’m sure some rookie is going to wear it. Hopefully that rookie will be Mark Melancon, which hopefully brings back some “legacy” to it. As of now, #45 will always be for Cecil Fielder, and Joe Girardi for a short period of time.

  85. SJ44 February 11th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

Arod needs to concentrate on his career. He’s not law enforcement or the government. Its up to the government to investigate those that break the law, not a private citizen.

He has enough on his plate. Vigiliante justice shouldn’t be added to it.

  86. Laura - Will it ever end? February 11th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

“Is A-Rod himself in a position to pursue any legal action against whatever person or entity is involved in the leak? I’m guessing he’s got a few bucks to spare.”

If he does that, it just makes the story go on even longer. Alex wants this over and done with as soon as possible. He’s probably as mad as everyone else that his name got leaked (actually, I’m sure he’s even madder), but I doubt he’ll pursue legal action over it.

  90. Wave Your Hat February 11th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

    randy-

Last year BP projected ERA’s in the mid 4′s for both Hughes and Kennedy. I remember being surprised that they were that negative on Hughes (I know you would not have been).

BP projected Joba to have a great year (BP’s model loves Joba) and predicted our offense to be a lot better than it was (Posada and Cano had a lot to do with that). BP did predict Jeter’s lower numbers.

I had Hughes at 12-7 and Kennedy at 8-6

The leak isn’t an issue. Worse things have been leaked. They’re not going to find the person that did it. That’s done with.

  96. Wave Your Hat February 11th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

    randy-

Following up, my guess is most of those projected 10 extra wins from BP can be attributed to (1) the difference between Posada and Molina, (2) Cano’s off year, (3) Joba not getting the number of innings projected and (4) the pitching injuries.

BP was just not that high on either Hughes or Kennedy last year.

    but E-Man, when there’s a leak on a Yank that’s serious business.

  98. GreenBeret7 February 11th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

So, Pat M…are you a Hughes and Kennedy “apologist”? How dare you expect that out of them.

    Tarheelyank–

Only in my dreams, but I do remember him fondly. 5’6″ and 135 lb. I think it was more like 42-17, but memories fade …

  100. E-Man February 11th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Wave Your Hat, I’ve noticed that.

Some people care more about the Yankees than they do secret CIA briefings.

    Pete,
One the contrary. I can’t get ENOUGH of anything baseball or Yankees related. Thanks for the in-depth coverage!

  102. PAT M. February 11th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

GB7, I was expecting a continuation from September’s outings….Hughes was the one I thought may even hit 15 wins…..Randy I warned me about the early callups…But Phillip was looking so good in late August and September……In fact they carried the staff down the stretch with solid outings……Damn grizzly catchers, they think they know it,,,usually they do….

I’ll be first in line to grab a Swisher tee when they start being made. My god, if Pudge had a shirt for doing nothing over a two-month span, Swish has to have some made.

  104. Bull.... February 11th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

In some countries the number 13 is considered very lucky. What difference does it make what number any player wears? Its what they do on the playing field that give the number meaning.

Changing to the leak issue. It seems some posters here have no problem with laws being broken for a rich player. Funny thing, I didn’t realize that we had a class structure society in the US where different laws apply to you dependant on your paycheck.

If the government leaked protected information on ARod what makes anyone think that this same government would care a wit about their own rights under the law? We are supposed to be equal under the law, and having exceptions for any means it degrades the legal system for all.

  105. Brad February 11th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Uniform numbers ? It never makes sense to buy a Yankee shirt with a name on the back. The Yankees were the first team to have numbers but have NEVER had names on the back.

  106. Jeterboy February 11th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Thought Swish would of grabbed #21.. I think he would look good in it.. and its was worn by his favorite player. Clemente!

  107. Shore Style February 11th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Maybe it will bring back what we saw of Phil Hughes in the playoffs of 07

  108. Ty February 19th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
