There’s been a J.B. Cox sighting

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 11, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees invited three more prospects to big-league camp: RHP J.B. Cox, RHP George Kontos and RHP Kanekoa Texeira.

I had sort of wondered why these guys weren’t invited in the first place. Kontos is the pitcher who was nearly included in the trade with Pittsburgh last summer. Texeira was acquired from the White Sox when Brian Cashman fleeced them for Nick Swisher.

Cox is the once well-regarded prospect who has had some ups and downs with the organization. He once projected as a late-inning reliever and now needs to prove himself after an uneven 2008 that saw him appear in only 39 games.

(I’m trying to come up with stuff not related to A-Rod, steroids and Selena Roberts. Work with me people. Work with me).

Peter, any word on what they’re doing with Igawa?

  2. Nick in SF February 11th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

J.B. Cox was cited too?? For what???

  3. Ed February 11th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Keep giving us the non-A-Rod, non-steroids, non-Selena Roberts stuff, no matter how minute. Many of us still hunger for these small details. Thanks, Pete!

  4. yankeefan23 February 11th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Just a thought. Sorry I was one of those who harked about the overload of A-Rod news. However, just to put a spin on it. A-Rod mentioned the Texas clubhouse culture. Is it possible the Mark Teixeira might be on that lits of 104 players?

  5. Ed - spring training can't start soon enough February 11th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

    Pete,

go out and investiage more on which prospects and newcomers get what numbers. that should be productive.

  6. Bob(The Original) February 11th, 2009 at 4:08 pm

    Hey Nick,

Since Jenkins referenced the “stat guys” in his Jeter comment, maybe we should send him a link to what the “stat guys” project for the Yankees and Giants records this season.

“ham fighter – yes she can be held in contempt for refusing to give up sources.”

trisha, i cant believe a lawyer is saying this. were she to be called to court to reveal her sources…

THEN were she to refuse to reveal those sources…

THEN she could be held in contempt of court.

you are assuming a crime that has not been committed. she has not been called to reveal her sources and she has not refused to reveal them to that court.

so she is NOT in contempt of court.

im not a lawyer but i think the call that due process.

  8. Steve B February 11th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

“A-Rod mentioned the Texas clubhouse culture. Is it possible the Mark Teixeira might be on that lits of 104 players?”

Sure it is. There’s an 8% chance or somewhere thereabouts. We’ll probably never see those remaining names though.

Still, you can count on Teixeira getting plenty of questions about it when he shows for camp.

  9. john February 11th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

So we have Teixeria and Teixeira.

Have you now broken down the nuiances of pronunciation?

Will we see Jesus behind the plate much during spring training?

  10. Jason February 11th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

I would rather read about players numbers and Jorge coming out of his crouch then read anymore about A-Rod and steroids. Thanks for finding non-roid related stories Pete.

  11. Betsy February 11th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Kay and La Greca are really all over Jeter for not supporting A-Rod and delaying his comment. They have a point in that David Wright, a member of another team, has come out “for” Alex, but Jeter can’t?

LaGreca is ridiculous though – his theory is that Jeter is enjoying A-Rod getting himself into trouble because he is subconsciously in competition with him.

Whew – they really just roasted Jeter. A caller just came up with this theory and they agreed: David Wright always does the “right” thing, and Derek Jeter never does the “wrong” thing. There is a difference…..I think Jeter was wrong in 2006, but boy, I don’t think this is fair. They are really damning him. This delay, they now think, is going to allow people’s imaginations to run wild: Derek doesn’t like Alex, Derek liked and supported Giambi, etc..

It’s been hard to listen to Kay over the last couple of days.

    Thoughts?

  12. Chris February 11th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

    Pete –
Please, please stop worrying about not giving us A-Rod stuff. The reason I have always come to this site since the beginning is mostly the small stuff – constant updates on any number of things, from an insider’s perspective (at least far more inside than I could be). Plus, it is stuff that you literally cannot get anywhere else. So please, keep doing what you are doing as well as you are doing it, and do so unapologetically. We appreciate it.

    Pete

    Thank you.

  14. Tom February 11th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Why don’t writers like Jenkins ever mention Wang or Cano as being products of the Yankees farm team?

  15. Bob(The Original) February 11th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

For crying out loud people give it a rest.

Teixeira was a rookie in 2003. There was testing in the minors long before there was in the majors. Testing in the majors began in 2003 with the survery, and then the random in 2004.

He’s been tested his whole career, minors and majors.

Stop with all the stupid speculation over every individual player.

    Enough already.

It was the era of steroids. We all know that. At what point do some of you just accept that and move on?

  16. yankeefan23 February 11th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

I’d be willing to be a $1 million that the rest of the names come out. It’s just a matter of time.

  17. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

I still have high hopes for JB Cox. He seems like he just needs to get his head in the right place. Maybe his ceiling is a little lower than it once was but he can still be a very good MLB reliever IMO.

  18. Betsy February 11th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

I just skimmed the prior blogs….except for the Alex one. I know what Pete said about him and decided to skip it.

I really like Bruney and think he will have a very good season. He impressed me a lot by foregoing surgery last year to try and come back and help the team – that’s dedication. I also like Alabadejo a lot – he flies under the radar because he’s not flashy, but he’s a workhorse. I thought Joe overused him at one point (one night he threw like 50 pitches and he was back on the mound with only one day’s rest), so he’s got to be careful.

Igawa is invited to camp as a non-roster invitee.

  20. randy l February 11th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

last night i was talking to several die hard red sox fans here on cape cod who are also good baseball fans.

they totally think arod is still in trouble.

they fixate on arod mispeaking about selena roberts when saying a police report was filed when the police came but did not file any charges.

they think that the arod situation will really cause problems for the yankees.

even though they say they know red sox players could be on the list, they have grown confident that the red sox somehow will avoid the problem.

as long as they have this arrogant attitude, the fires are fueled for continuing debate.

it will be very sweet to have a very strong yankee team this year.

  21. Frank Solares February 11th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

    Mr. Abraham I agree 100%
What is the deal with Jesus Montero? Is he going to AA or AAA this year?

  22. pat February 11th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

    Pete -

Would you be willing, as a BBWAA member, be willing to accept Joe Sheehan’s suggestion about the Hall of Fame?

“I propose that for as long as a clearly qualified Hall of Famer remains on the ballot solely because of steroid allegations—or for that matter, proven use—there should be no J.G. Taylor Spink Award given out to writers. If we’re going to allow failures during the “Steroid Era” to affect eligibility for honors, let’s make sure we catch everyone who acted shamefully.”

Seems fair to me if the BBWAA is going to keep these players out.

My sentiments exactly, now that ST is starting, keep the updates rolling unapologetically.

  25. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

(10-13) Yankees projected 25man roster players from the farm system: Posada, Cano, Jeter, Melky, Gardner, Pettite, Joba, Wang, Rivera, Coke, Aceves?, Robertson, Melancon?, Hughes?

(8-10) Red Sox projected 25man from their farm system: Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lowrie, Lester, Masterson, Delcarmen, Buchholz, Papelbon

  26. Peter Abraham February 11th, 2009 at 4:26 pm

Screw it. I tried to write something other than A-Rod and people are still at it. Some tool just wrote some post about how I hate Melky.

I hate Melky? How in the world do I hate Melky? Because I wrote about him having a poor 2008? I like Melky. He’s a hell of a nice kid and I even try and help him with English. But, no, I hate him.

Enjoy the rest of your day. If your goal was to make me hate doing this, you’ve succeeded. It’s not fun any more. Hopefully it will be again soon

“(I’m trying to come up with stuff not related to A-Rod, steroids and Selena Roberts. Work with me people. Work with me)”

This stuff is good. Keep em coming!

You could do 1,000 words on Igawa’s sunglasses and I’d be tickled pink after the last 2 weeks.

  28. Joey's Poodle February 11th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Kay has needled Jeter at every opportunity for several (three?) years now. There was a story out there about how Jeter had laughed at Kay or something, I don’t remember the details, and Kay got his ego punctured. He’ll take it out of Jeter as long as he has a mike in front of him.

  29. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

    Peter,

the ARod snowball got too big to stop it after a couple posts…

but you are slowing it down.

keep up with the baseball related posts.

  30. gayle February 11th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

have to say have not listened to talk radio here in NY since Saturday and it has been a real pleasure. Watched MLB Network and that has given me all I need on this issue as well as keeping me updated on what else I need to know in the world of baseball. There are plenty of places to go if you are bothered by what is going on on the radio it is very easy to switch it off.

Pete- looks like until tomorrow when Girardi meets with the media it might be slim pickings although I personally am happy to read about another Texeria anything to avoid the nastiness of the past few days.

  31. Chris from NJ February 11th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Not to mention the impact player that we traded for Arod, Soriano. It’s not like the yankee system can’t develop kids. Cano and Wang are hugely underated and were relative sleepers in the system. Wang wins 19 games two seasons in a row, being a groundball pitcher with a dreadful defense, not too shabby…

  32. rodg12 February 11th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Pete is right, these guys really should have been invited to spring training originally. I wonder why they weren’t?

The Yanks definitely have some promising arms they can bring up and use in the bullpen if they need them. This is probably the primary reason they don’t need to sign a guy like Juan Cruz. Why pay him even 2 million when you can get close to (or even better) production for the league minimum?

  33. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

    so

Yankees will have apx 12-13 players on their 25 man roster that were brought up through their own farm system.

The Red Sox will have apx 8.

The Sox have a great farm system… but they get credit for it. The Yankees deserve much more credit for theirs.

  34. Ham Fighters February 11th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

pete, dont let the bs get you down! alot of people just have a knee jerk reaction. they jump all over anybody who doesnt suck up to arod and call him the GOAT, if you dont, then you are a hater. no shades of grey are allowed and nobody is allowed to question the honest and truthfull statement arod gave to gammons.

  35. Steve B February 11th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

    Boston Dave:

Don’t think Buchholtz will start the year in Boston and don’t think Hughes, Robertson, Melancon and one of Coke/Aceves will start the year in NYC.

  36. dennis-costanza(sox fan) February 11th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

    RandyI.

I would be willing to bet the farm that there are some prominent Sox players on that list. There may also be some other current Yankees on that list as well, and Detroit, Oak, and on and on…It will be ugly for all teams IMO

I know I won’t like but I truly want the other names made public.

I do not think it was fair for Arod to be the only name out there. I know life is not fair but this makes me feel for the guys. Again, JMO

I hope business is strong for this time of year.

  37. Al from BK February 11th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

“Why don’t writers like Jenkins ever mention Wang or Cano as being products of the Yankees farm team?”

Because those facts would go against there argument. They also only mention Joba to complain about him going back to the pen, they ignore the fact that hes 23 and has one of the best fastball/slider combo’s in the game.

  38. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

    Chris from NJ,

True, the Yanks (Soriano, Nick Johnson, Navarro, Lilly, etc) have traded plenty of decent regulars.

The Sox have also given up some(Hanley, Brandon Lyon/Fossum (gag)).

I’m sure there are plenty of others. Point being, the media and most fans don’t recognize this.

The Yankees have a darn good farm system and now that they have realized/learned how to cultivate this with their plentiful resources…. watch out.

  39. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

    Steve B,

That’s why I said between 10 and 13 for the Yanks. There is definitely wiggle room.

I think most of those guys will see the 25man during the year though.

  40. S.o.S. February 11th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

“Have you now broken down the nuiances of pronunciation?”

Its funny you mention that. I still dont know what the correct pronunciation of Tiexiera is. Alex said TEX-SIERA the other day and here i thought it was pronounced TESHERA. Cant argue with someone who has played with him before.

    Pete,
How did Screw it not get caught by the filters? I have to say that it was very obvious that you HATED! Carl Pavano in his few years stint in New York. Why else would you keep calling him American Idle.

  41. Frank Yankees Voice February 11th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

No “X” sound is the correct way. Arod and Teixeira supposedly weren’t terribly friendly in their short time together. Maybe Arod was just being a tool, but more likely, he just didn’t know.

  45. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Pete, as others have posted here above, it’s the small insights you give us that make many of us come back here daily. It’s good to know these three guys showed up today. I don’t know anywhere else I can find that out.

I like how you tell us a lot of the process behind a story and your job. That’s really interesting, and nobody else does that.

Plus, you’ve a great sense of humor and a great baseball mind.

Ignore the idiots who keep attacking you. I can’t begin to understand why they do that, there’s plenty of other places they could go if they don’t enjoy your posts.

  50. Ham Fighters February 11th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

so with abreu and dunn out of the picture, manny and the dodgers are left with each other again. i dont buy the giants are in, they are just keeping it as expensive as possible for the dodgers imo.

  51. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Nady for Gorkys Hernandez…. cmon Cash pull it off

  52. Bronx Jeers February 11th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I thin that technically the EI in the first syllable should rhyme with the EI in the second but the pronunciation has been Americanized.

X in Spanish is pronounced like our H but Teixeira is of Portugese descent so you get the sort of SH sound.

  53. randy l February 11th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

    dennis-costanza(sox fan)

i think because of the red sox skating through the mitchell report and now seeing arod outed they are thinking that somehow they will dodge the bullet.

of course , since george mitchell was likely told by novitzky who was on the list, it’s possible that the red sox know who’s on the list.

i pointed out to my red sox friends at some point it’s going to look like the fix is in if some prominent red sox players are not outed.

i think this is going to be a very polarizing year for red sox and yankee fans.

  54. Joe DeRosa February 11th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I enjoy this type of coverage a heck of a lot better than hearing the same A-rod story twisted a 1000 different ways. Hopefully Cox can learn some better location while he attends camp, possibly from Edwar Ramirez. Since they have similar styles and Edwar has a little more experience under his belt, albeit not that much, but you never know what will help you.

  55. Steve B February 11th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

    “Nady for Gorkys Hernandez….”

Braves would scoff at the notion. Swisher for Gorkys doesn’t seem out of the realm to me though.

Nobody’s dropping a legit prospect for 1 year of Nady, IMO.

  56. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

    Steve B,

I know… Nady may end up being type-A at least. It was a bit of wishful thinking on my part.

Swisher is definitely more likely to bring back Hernandez.

  57. Bronx Born February 11th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

    Peter,

You are a good guy and we really appreciate you hosting this blog. Ignore the idiots. Those of us who love the Yankees and post here because of that love really cherish you. And like SJ we want to talk about baseball. We love the game and all its nuances. I understand your frustration but let the idiots ramble. We don’t pay attention most of the time. :)

  58. Greg February 11th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Great stuff…. keep all of the non-Arod info comin this way!

  59. Yankee Trader February 11th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

    Abreu to Angels
    Dunn to Nationals
    Garrett Anderson probably to Mariners

Braves still looking for an outfielder, and have 7M left to spend, on both Glavine and OF’er
Anyone interested in a Nady for Martin Prado, “super” utility player who hit .320 last year? Expand the deal to include OF’er Gorkys Hernandez for one of our relief pitchers?

Still think Juan Cruz might be a steal at a reasonable 1-2 year contract for us, and would involve giving up a 4th rounder in the draft. Plus he has experience as a starter.

    Thoughts??

  60. dennis-costanza(sox fan) February 11th, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I agree. I will keep my posts to a minimum as some folks think no matter what if you are a Sox fan then you are here on the site to antagonize. That may be even more the case this year.

I just happen to really enjoy a lot of the posts and insight that the majoroty of regular posters offer.

Disagree, Dave. Look at the garbage the Yankees sent to the White Sox for him. Gorkys alone is a better package than that. White Sox sold low on Swisher and he hasn’t gotten any higher since.

I’m just catching up with the day’s posts.

    Rishi,

Thanks so much for the links. Nice to see there are a few writers with perspective on ARod.

    SJ44,

The charity event you’ve mentioned a couple of times – was it Jeter’s event? What are those things like? Are they fun, or more like work/convention functions?

I makes me sick what you said about Roberts delving into the Miami Beach club scene. I don’t care if someone’s a public figure, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to investigate, or publicize, ANYTHING about someone’s sex life. I can possibly see a hypocrite exception (such as anti-gay ministers who hire male prostitutes, or gay politicians who vote against gay rights), but even those are problematic. Anyone else, no matter how rich and famous, has a right to a private life, and as long as it’s with consenting adults, there’s no excuse for anyone to publicize it.

  67. miggs February 11th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

more like Nady and a good relief prospect for Hernandez alone.

  70. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

I meant more likely to get Hernandez than Nady.

Is that what you are disagreeing with?

Red Sux were definitely left out of the Mitchell report mess and it was very obvious. I’m waiting for the day I see Ortiz and others implemented. Its not out of spite either I just think its fair.

Maybe not- Jordan Schafer, Josh Anderson, Brandon Jones, and Jeff Francoeur are ahead of Gorkys Hernandez, who was a throw in from Detroit in the Jair Jurrjens deal.

  74. m February 11th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

There are a lot of people of Portuguese descent in Hawaii. I have yet to meet or hear of a Teixeira that pronounces the ‘x’. “ta-CHER-a” is what I hear.

Back in the day, before the PC days, Portagee jokes were similar to Polish jokes on the mainland. We have one comedian who used to tell Portuguese jokes all the time. It made him famous.

  75. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

    Steve B,

What’s working in the Yanks favor is that the Braves already have Schafer, a good amount invested in winning this season, and a real need for more offense especially in the OF.

I think the Braves would be wise to address the situation sooner rather than later. Outfielders, IMO, are going to cost more mid-season than they do right now.

I’m not saying they will overpay for Nady or Swisher but that it may be more likely now that Abreu and Dunn are off the board.

  76. Lorenzo February 11th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Peter good job with the covering other players and stories other then the one that is being played out already.

It’s good to read about players like J.B. Cox who was once the college reliever of the year and others like Bruney, Albaladejo, and Swish’s jersey digits. Hopefully you can get some interviews with prospects like Austin Jackson, Brackman and such.

  77. Steve B February 11th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

    Boston Dave:

What I’m disagreeing with is your contention that Swisher brings back more than G. Hernandez. I don’t see the Braves going further than that. I don’t think they’d consider Nady for Hernandez at all.

  78. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

    Steve B,

That was never my contention… We have a misunderstanding.

I said Swisher would bring back more than Nady.

  79. Yankee Trader February 11th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

    Boston Dave

“more like Nady and a good relief prospect for Hernandez alone.”

Remember the Braves will probably want some cash thrown in so they can afford both Nady and Glavine. What about Martin Prado straight up for Nady + cash?

  81. Ninja Burglar February 11th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Does anyone know if ALL major league players were tested in 2003, or if it was a sample? I worry that if not all players were tested and these results were released, it would misleadingly justify some players who simply did not have the opportunity to fail a test at that time.

Sad that this is my mentality now, but this is where we are.

  82. Steve B February 11th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Sorry Dave, I misread. You said Swisher is more likely to bring back Hernandez. I read you saying he’d bring back more than Hernandez.

    My bad, dude.

  83. Doreen February 11th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

This whole mess is really starting to make me feel sad. Sad that it’s not bad enough that ARod’s “done us wrong,” but people who cover our team (Kay, Jones) are seemingly taking this opportunity to let out every bad feeling they’ve ever had – like covering the Yankees is punishment or something. And it’s not enough to feed on ARod, who arguably deserves what he gets, they’ve got to tear down Derek Jeter. At least wait to see what the man says. And, ahem, he has already made two, count ‘em, two, statements in ARod’s defense in the last 10 days.

Jeter ain’t perfect, but I think Jeter deserves to handle this his way; he hasn’t done anything wrong. I know he’s the captain, but that doesn’t mean he’s the kicking post. As far as David Wright – heck, it’s easy for him, the circus isn’t coming to his neck of the woods, is it? He won’t have to answer the same question today, tomorrow and a month of Sundays, will he? He’ll get the question this once, give his answer and be done. Not fair to compare the two, at all. And if I recall, David Wright was also being criticized last season, though I don’t recall what for. It’s utter hypocracy.

It also saddens me that this topic is not going to go away in spite of all Pete’s and other’s efforts to force the conversation elsewhere. I’m sad that I can’t keep to my own resolve to shut up about the darn thing.

  84. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

… my whole point being is that now would be a good time for Cashman to check in with the Braves.

The Braves really do need help on offense this season and particularly in the OF. They have several CF/OF prospects that aren’t ready and will end up trading one of them eventually.

  85. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I say keep both Nady and Swish.

Swish is valuable because he is also our back up 1B (saves a roster spot). Nady is worth more to us this year, then anyone we would get back.

If somebody breaks, or doesn’t perform then you can reconsider.

  92. GreenBeret7 February 11th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

The only way it makes sense for NYY to trade either Swisher or Nady is to get major talent for either now or the future to to deal with a team that is very close and needs to fill either a corner outfield or 1st base AND needs a good, young, cheap middle relief pitcher. Depending on what NYY wants in return as to whether they include cash or an additional player/prospect.

  93. rodg12 February 11th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

The caveat to that, though, is they were notified at least a year in advance they would be tested at some point during 2003. Also, we know there are some things the test did not pick up the first time (namely whatever Bonds was on at the time – probably the Clear) that can now be picked up with advanced testing methods.

IMO once, the Braves decide on a $$ figure for Glavine the’ll initiate talks with the Yankees. No need for Cashman to call first.

Again Nady for Martin Prado anyone??

  96. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

    GB,

I agree 100% with that. I think Gorkys Hernandez (considered by many to be a top 75-80 prospect) would fit that bill. It’s just a question of how badly Atlanta wants to add Nady or Swisher. I’m guessing not that bad but I hope Cashman is at least speaking with Atlanta. The Braves have a bunch of solid OF prospects but unfortunately for them, they need a solid MLB OF right now.

I’m not sold on Prado. He looks like he’ll be ok but his sample size is very small and he was never projected to be very good.

I’d rather keep Nady as a valuable platoon guy, offer him arb, and take the draft pick(s) next offseason.

  101. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

plus, if the Yankees are going to trade for a utility guy, I’d prefer someone with more experience at SS (since that is probably their weakest defensive infield position right now… sorry DJ).

I think they can get more for Nady (even if that means a trade deadline midseason deal) than Prado but I could be wrong.

  102. Yankee Trader February 11th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

    Boston Dave-

If the Braves had to they could move Kelly Johnson back to LF and put Martin Prado at 2nd.

  103. Boston Dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

  108. GreenBeret7 February 11th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

At this time, all NYY needs is a solid utility infielder. A solid utility infielder is not worth giving up a solid corner, fulltime outfielder. Neither one is going to be traded for Prado. A middle relief pitcher, maybe….not a fulltime corner outfield.

  109. Yankee Trader February 11th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Pudge and Caminiti were gone by 1993, but Juan Gone, Raffi and Sierra were still there. I’ve seen Shane Spencer mentioned as a likely juicer, and he was on that Ranger team too. There were certainly ample opportunies for Tex to experiment.

I would certainly love to join Bob (The Original) in “moving on.” But Teixeira’s appearance on the list will certainly be spun into a nice media stink.

I read a comment on RAB from someone named “CB”.
It was about this A-Rod stuff and the person seemed upset about it. The gist of it was about people wanting to freely give A-Rod a pass and not Barry Bonds. I don’t remember the post or the point of it exactly aside from venting a little, but I remember that I disagreed with it.

I had to go study for my final on friday for the last five hours or so and I came back to eat dinner and read some of the comments about the legal issues surrounding Roberts and her unnamed sources. I have to say you guys had one of the most well thought out, knowledgeable and informative conversations I have ever seen on this sight. i ONLY wish the media could look at the convos going on in lohud today and take your guys lead. Outstanding stuff guys. This is exactly the type of stuff I love talking about here – the controversial, hard hitting, meaty issues of this whole arod situation. The stuff that no one else seems to be talking about. Kudos guys, i ONLY wish i could have been a part of that discussion earlier today,

I had one thought while reading that I didn’t see any one else bring up (although i did not read the subsequent comment sections). I would think that this court-ordered protection of the names issued by the legal system was to prevent exactly what happened to arod – the info being leaked to the media. You would think after the courts went to all this trouble to protect the anonymity of its player and then, a reporter along with sources likely connected to the courts decide to totally disregard the ruling of the court. You would think that someone would be pretty upset about that no? I know the media doesnt give a rats ^&% but certainly a judge may take issue with it. I really hope this issue does not just stop with selena walking off into the sunset and her sources being granted the same protection for an illegal matter that they denied to arod. All of this somehow sounds very ironic to me in a sense – like this story was dug up and written while breaking more laws and being more unethical than the story they were writing about.

Also, some of you guys said that it is unlikely that Selena did anything illegal and much more likely that her source was the one who actually broke the law. I would not be so quick to say that. Mainly, because i FIND it difficult to think of a single reason why her source would knowlingly break the law which would later be written about in a newspaper and not only break the law but break a court order handed down by a judge and this is likely someone connected with the legal system. Now, why exactly would this source be willing to put him/herself out on a limb like that all for the sake of advancing selena’s career and destroying arods reputation. What does the source or sources get out of it? The chance to remain completely disconnected from the story with he slight notion that they may eventually be revealed.

Furthermore, i THINK selena is a very headstrong woman and I dont know how willingly she would give up her sources even if she was ordered to do so by a federal judge or be held in contempt. i THINK this story could still get much more interesting as time goes on with the list of 103 names along with the fate of selena and her sources. We as yankee fans dont have much left to lose out of this whole thing as we have gone through the steroid issue with numerous different yankees already but some people still have a whole lot left on the table.

  129. dave February 11th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

At the end of the second to last paragraph I just skipped over explicitly writing down my point of that paragraph. I just wanted to say that I think selena would have had to offer her source something in return outside of anonymity of course and that would make her culpable as it becomes a bribe. I am just thinking out loud here but it is extremely hard to believe that this source would put him/herself on a very thin line just to help out two reporters and SI. I dont really think it was weighing on their conscious and they just had to get it out either. And not everyone hates arod so badly that they would do anything including risk breaking the law to harm him. If anyone else could come up with a reason this source would head towards such shaky ground for selena please, i AM ALL EARS.

i agree with you pete about marte in the eighth – he doesnt seem to be THAT guy. Bruney might be but I think melancon will be. Its hard to predict a bullpen’s performance on any given season because it is the most volatile part of the sport but I think both Melancon and Bruney will be very solid for us this season. i also think if coke is allowed to return to the pen at some point instead of starting in triple A, he could be big for us as well. Im not sold on veras, albadejo or robertson yet. i think they are all talented but I need to see more. Edwar could also be pretty big for us next year but it would be nice to see a little more control. i hear people talking about him like he is the next best thing in some articles and in the back of my mind, Im thinking if anyone is the next best thing, it is Mark Melancon. That guy is going to be tremendous for us at some point. And he pitched a ton of innings last year for coming off TJ surgery. He is clearly a competitor who wants the baseball.

Selena Roberts has already screwed A-Rod enough. What else more can she say that she “thinks” Orza tipped A-Rod? Who cares we already know that, I’m already sick of hearing from this woman. If you want to know about her credibility check out her Duke lacrosse articles she had those young men convicted on day 1. Good journalist or not she sure loves herself some “witch hunt”.

  138. Clare February 11th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

    GreenBeret7,

If the “further steroid participation” is what ARod referred to on ESPN, that she’s trying to tie him to steroids going back to high school, I think it’s no big deal. If, however, she’s got anything post 2003, then I’m with SJ44, ARod has a problem.

Interesting thing about that link from the observer above – it says that the NYTimes was investigating the steroid story as well. Michael Schmidt had a story up right after SI citing 2 anonymous sources – I wonder if these sources were 2 of SI’s 4? But the bigger issue is why now? Why all this buzz about a six year old steroid test right now?

  140. Betsy February 11th, 2009 at 6:17 pm

    Get this:

According to Selena Roberts’ editor, (not a fanblog nut, not a lunatic WFAN caller, her editor):

“I assure you she has more drug revelations as well as other news. Not everything that Selena has on A-Rod’s steroid participation has come out yet.”

Per a poster named Snatch Catch on NYYFans.com:

Holy Cow , she was going for the entrapment play by releasing the 2003 failed drug test. She’s hoping he admits to just that, knowing full well she’s got more evidence to kick him even harder when he responds to the 2003 allegations.

Wow. Just…wow. She’s legitimately trying to orchestrate this whole thing.

**This book scares me. The idea of this book makes me physically ill. I don’t know what other stuff she has on A-Rod (I don’t care to know about what he does in his private life, so I’d like to think most people would feel dirty just reading what Roberts has to say. No one wants their innermost life being outed), but Alex is going to need the support of his teammates more than ever. The book worries me more than this steroid mess does.

  147. dave February 11th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Selena rips peoples lives apart breaking the law or letting someone else break the law for her to get a story and then, she plays the innocent little girl role in her interviews that she was just doing what any good journalist does. She was just minding her own bussiness doing a “profile” on arod (whatever that means as I guess profile is code for sucking the life out of them) when she stumbled upon this information. Yea, she stumbled across this info like Madoff just stumbled across billions of dollars. Ok, that is a bit harsh but my point is neither one of those just happens

“Few media outlets are reporting this, but Selena Roberts is setting A-Rod up for a big exposé in a book that is sure to shoot to the top of the best seller lists.

Rodriguez accused Roberts of stalking him, and that may well be true.

The second wave of Roberts and her obsession with Rodriguez will make A-Rod another Dennis Rodman, especially when it comes to his sex life. Rodriguez may not wear wedding dresses like Rodman, but Roberts is expected to look at the questions A-Rod has raised about his own sexual feelings.

Hints already have suggested that he has a preference for “she-males” he can meet in some Miami clubs. Is it fair to report this? Roberts’ book allegedly will do so when it comes out and drags A-Rod out, too.

If you used to envy his looks, talent, fame, and life, you may begin to feel a little sorry for A-Rod.”

“Why all this buzz about a six year old steroid test right now?”

The woman is a typical greedy pig trying to make money off of the suffering of others. As long as A-Rod never failed another test after 2003 all she is doing is speculating. I really hope that book gets low sales no one should be rewarded for plotting against another human being the way she has with A-Rod. In a time of economic crisis where people cant afford top eat the fact that this woman is going to make her riches in this manner disgusts me. I don’t make enough money to spend 20 bucks on garbage I hope more people share my sentiments.

  150. James February 11th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Francessa said russo made it clear this morning that he is rooting against mike’s show and basically hoping that espn radio outperforms him in his market (as doggies sirius show doesnt directly compete with him). Mike excellently then stated some cold hard facts about the shows rating being up, markedly outperforming the same period at last year and that YES has extended them for 5 years at double the money. He then pretty much said- Bring it on, that as long as he is there and long after, WFAN will always be number 1 in the market. Try block him from guests (in reference to espners), pull it out all the stops… not going to stop him and they’re going to need to bring more than pea shooters to take him down.

As someone who likes Mike and never enjoyed russo I was grinning ear to ear

  151. randy l February 11th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

“Holy Cow , she was going for the entrapment play by releasing the 2003 failed drug test. She’s hoping he admits to just that, knowing full well she’s got more evidence to kick him even harder when he responds to the 2003 allegations.”

arod would get my dumber than a peanut award if he lied about his steroid use when he made his apology.

at some point federal agents will question him under oath, so to lie would just be beyond dumb. it’s hard to imagine.

  152. dave February 11th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Isnt the legitimacy of that warrant they gave the mlbpa still hung up in court to this day?? Im not sure who is tying it up though or if it still is running through the courts. THIS IS WHY YOU DONT DIG UP THE PAST WHEN IT STINKS THIS BAD. It doesnt just make the players look worse, it makes everyone look worse.

  153. GreenBeret7 February 11th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

    Clare
    February 11th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

    ————————————————————

If this had anything to do with High School, Doug Mientkeiwicz would know about it and I’d think that he’d distance himself from it. If there was a failed test since 2004, MLB would have already known, as would the Mitchell Fantasies.

In the meantime, Miguel Tejada lies to Congress, tells them that he bought HGH, but didn’t use it and through it away and hardly a blip. Toss is the crap about Alomar, and it’s getting even less. I’ll just let things ride until. Regardless of what Rodriguez does or says will never be enough. It never has before.

The other thing with Jeter not speaking up is BS. He’s pizsed me off before because he had no problem backing Giambi and Posada and declaring that Rodriguez’ issues with fans and media was not his business, but, not on this. He’s already said he backs Rodriguez on his statement (whether Jeter was sincere is not up to me to decide). He’s made his statement, as far as I’m concerned.

The rest is up to Rodriguez. Put the word out that it’s a one hour, one time press conference, no questions about where he got the stuff or what it was, and no questions about his personal life or Roberts. If there is, end it and walk away. No team mates need to be there unless they want to be.

  154. Uncle Ellsworth February 11th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Thanks James I wish I heard that.
Since the break-up Mike has gone out of his way to take the high road. I guess Dog needed a ratings boost – now the gloves are off.
I’m lukewarm on Mike but am SICK of ESPN – radio and TV.

  155. Al from BK February 11th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

“at some point federal agents will question him under oath, so to lie would just be beyond dumb. it’s hard to imagine.”

Why will he be questioned under oath? The country has way more important things to worry about. Also he technically never failed a test after the new rules were implemented so how/why would he be questioned? A full confession is enough to satisfy the stiffs in DC especially when the economy is sitting in the toilet.

  156. saucY February 11th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

i mentioned this in another thread, but as dumb as Francessa is and as much as i disagree with him, the show is light years better without Russo…

  157. ZMAN7777 February 11th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

“In a time of economic crisis where people cant afford top eat the fact that this woman is going to make her riches in this manner disgusts me.”

Al, you crack me up. What about making over $30 million a year for hitting a baseball and playing a kid’s game?? Check the meds again, Al.

  158. dave February 11th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Selena is going to get sued if she starts bringing up stuff about arod in highschool and his personal life in terms of his sexual life. She is really asking for a beat down and there will be plenty of people ready to send her to jail I think for trying to destroy a baseball player who has not hurt anyone. If she thinks she could publish ridiculous stuff like that about someone she doesnt even know and be looked upon in a good light she must be delusional. And that whole goody goody act that she was playing on the michael kay show was o transparent but the media actually still think she is a good writer and a good person. If she publishes this nonsense about arod who is a flawed but decent guy than she will really be scorned by all of NY. The media will grind her @$$ into the ground for writing a book that tried to destroy arod’s life. people do NOT like that kind of stuff and no one deserves to get rich off the suffering of another. I really hope she thinks twice before trying to play this game because she is going to be cruising for a buisin if she does.

  159. dave February 11th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

They already said arod will NOT be called before a congressional hearing – THEY JUST SAID THAT YESTERDAY. i dont know why people are bringing it back up today.

Also, do you really think that arod could have test positive for roids in 2004 or later and none of us would know about it or the yankees organization?? Dont you remember hearing about all of the other players who have tested positive in the last few years? You actually think arod would be able to keep it a secret after testing starter? I think one of the fines is that the entire public learns about it – that is actually part of the punishment for doing it now. Its impossible that arod got caught on the yanks and no one knew.

  160. randy l February 11th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

“Why will he be questioned under oath”

i think he will because novitzky appears to be a zealot who is obsessed with knocking athletes off their perch. he was behind clemens being called before congress when the country was going down the tubes financially.

novitzky gets his salary. what does he care about wasting federal resources on his obsession?

he’ll have his people question arod or do it himself.

  161. bru February 11th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

the goverment goes after players that lie under oath, arod did not do that.they might wan’t to ask him about dealers, etc but he won’t get into trouble.

  162. Clare February 11th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

    GB7,

I completely agree with you, particularly about how whatever ARod does it will never be enough.

Did you see my link earlier to Feinsand’s article on Montero?

  163. Clare February 11th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

    Dave,

Roberts is not going to get sued, and is not going to jail. What might happen, however, is that if she digs into the gutter, the backlash might just accomplish the opposite of what she apparently is hoping for, and ARod might finally become accepted in NY.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Throughout the great scheme of things you actually secure a B- just for hard work. Exactly where you actually misplaced me ended up being on the specifics. As as the maxim goes, details make or break the argument.. And that couldn’t be much more correct right here. Having said that, let me inform you what did deliver the results. The article (parts of it) is very convincing and this is most likely the reason why I am taking the effort in order to comment. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Next, while I can certainly notice the leaps in reason you come up with, I am definitely not convinced of just how you seem to unite the points which in turn make the conclusion. For right now I will, no doubt subscribe to your position but trust in the future you actually connect the dots much better.
