hopefully bernie will be there one day

  2. One Last MOOOSE Call

    No Mussina?

  3. BD

Do they do any real instruction or is it just for fun?

  4. m

Nice to see Guidry’s feelings weren’t hurt. Guess he hasn’t read the Yankee Years. :)

  5. GreenBeret7

Why in God’s name would they bring Billy Conners and (eek…Stump Merrill) to camp? It’ll take two months to fix what he screws up. It is great to see that Hector Lopez is back with the team, though.

  6. EdFl

Hector Lopez goes back to the late 50’s with The Yanks. Very good bench player, the type f player The Yankees need .

  7. Bronx Jeers

Is Robert Di Niro a Yankee fan?

Maybe they can get him to come down and intruct Arod how to act like a man.

  8. SoCalYankeeFan

Can “Mick the Quick” still play CF and bat leadoff?…LOL

    SoCalYankeeFan 8)

  9. Phil Parcells

    AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Pete Rose says he’s disappointed with ARod

  10. teddy

no roger invite, must got lost in the mail

  11. pat

Oswalt needs to be careful when he talks about A-Rod costing him money.

Love it or hate it, A-Rod’s $252M contract put more money in more players pockets than they ever dreamed of getting. A rising tide raises all boats.

  12. MaineYankee

    GB7

Gotta support Stump. Maine guy.

  13. E-Man

When do these guys report or are they already down there? Anyone know?

  14. MaineYankee

Mick is going to help Gardner learn how to slap the ball though infield.

  15. Clare

Pete Rose has a lot of nerve. ARod’s only said nice things about him, and even cooperated with a reporter doing a story on how Rose and ARod text each other.

  16. BillyJoBob

    Hey Pete-

How do Nettles and Jackson get along these days?

    BJB

  17. able 21

It sounds like Roger Clemens lawyer, Rusty Hardin, came out looking like Rusty the Bailiff today. Roger is a hurtin’ buckaroo.

  18. John

was someone drunk when they invited Stump Merril to camp as an “instructor”? Seriously, I feel bad for the poor ba.stard who ends uo shagging flies with Stump looking on as others get some insight from Yogi Berra, Reggi Jackson, Tino Martinez and the like. What’s Stump gonna say? “Now, listen to me kid, I know what I’m talking about. I once told Don Mattingly to cut his hair. Damn hippie.”

So is Sam Webb, Chairman of the American Communist Party, but, you’re not bragging about him. And, then there’s George Bush….and what is it with people from Maine writing horror novels? Is it that bad? Stephen King, Tabitha King, Joe Hill. I’ll give you Harriet B. stowe, Dorrethea Dix and Paul Stookey, though.

  20. Drive 4-5

I’m glad Ron Guidry is back. I dont think he was much of a full time pitching coach, but his experience is great to have around.

Love it that Mick the Quick is gonna be there!

  21. GreenBeret7

Drive3, by tomorrow, there’ll be an APB out on Mick by tomorrow and they’ll be paging every horse track in Florida.

  22. MaineYankee

I think Stump has something on The Boss.

Stephen King is a Red Sox fan. Need I say more?

  23. MAJOR ANNOUCEMENT

I have only typed on this blog one time before. I knew about Teixeira’s signing ahead of time. By days.

I know something else about Teixeira, too.

And the rest of the world will know by next Tuesday, possibly as early as Saturday.

  24. Drive 4-5

I think guys like Swisher and CC are really going to enjoy being around Mickey Rivers.

It’ll be nice to have another loose guy around. And dont think Mickey can’t tell some stories about George in his heyday. He’ll probably tell these guys that this A Rod thing aint nuthin compared to the Billie & Reggie circus lol

  25. MAJOR ANNOUCEMENT

and i know how to spell announcement. But i misspelled it the first time and i am authenticating myself.

  26. Drive 4-5

    MAJOR ANNOUCEMENT

You wouldnt happen to tonight’s lottery numbers do you???

  27. kd

    is his wife pregnant?

  28. SteveB

What exactly does Yogi and Lopez do?
Yogi is 83 and Hector Lopez is 79.

    MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT

As long as it doesn’t involve steroids, a jail sentence or season ending injury, I could deal with anything.

Well, for the first 55 years of his life, he knew HORROR.

  31. Clare

    pat,

I really, truly, don’t even care if it’s steroids. I agree with KLaw on this – it’s not like we don’t already know it was a problem – and particularly in Texas.

  32. Nick in SF

I don’t mean to step on the major annoucement, but I think it’s going to be that Mrs. Teixeira really does like the stores on Newbury Street and is looking forward to shopping their several times during the season.

In a related story, I was happy that USA soccer beat Mexico, and then I thought of Mrs. Aceves, and then I was sad.

  33. Todd

Hope they sign Billy Crystal to replace Melky in CF…

  34. GreenBeret7

Maine, as far as Merrill having something on George, it had be better more than just pictures. George had to have at least spit on a kid (one of his own doesn’t count) or kicked a dog.

  35. Uncle Ellsworth

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT do you want a MAJOR AWARD?

    http://www.redriderleglamps.co.....iption=yes

  36. PAT M.

The Stumper is a lifer,he;ll always be on the on payroll

  37. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book.

“And the rest of the world will know by next Tuesday, possibly as early as Saturday.”

Why did Mrs. Teixeira take an early pregnancy test?

  38. Yankee Trader

Is this what these instructors do in camp?

    Yogi Berra-tells bedtime stories
Billy Connors-tells players how he turned Roger Clemens around
Goose Gossage-tells relievers how to head hunt
Ron Guidry-tells small guys like Edwar Ramirez how to be successful
Reggie Jackson- tells lefties how to pull the ball in Yankee stadium. Will be working with Sabathia
    Hector Lopez-takes pictures
Tino Martinez-tells players how to be a winner
Stump Merrill-no clue what he does
Graig Nettles-tells players he was the best fielding 3rd baseman, not Clete Boyer
Mickey Rivers-hopefully teaches players how to lay down a bunt

  39. GreenBeret7

I guess the rumor about Teixeira not really being from Maryland and the extra (I) in his name is phony and was added only because some Hawiian kid stole his name and he didn’t want people to get confused.

  40. RER - 98

Mickey Rivers can be of help with bunting drills and in particular with Brett Gardner to take advantage of his speed. He will be of help to all OF’s with their positioning.
Tino can be of help to Swisher in the event he’s needed at first base.
Nettles will be busy assisting Mick Kelliher in helping Cody Ransom and Angel Berroa in their battle for a utility IF role.

  41. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

M, I read your post earlier about the Hawaiian alphabet. I found that really interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  42. CENTRAL CT YANKEE

This is the Key number for A-Rod: 3,934,518

  43. SJ44

    Nick,

    Lo. That’s classic!

  44. Doreen

I think they’re going to have to start recruiting a new generation of spring training instructors. Tino’s the only recent guy there.

Does anyone think that as time goes by it might be more difficult to get great players to come to ST as trainers? Between the money and the the fact that guys are more nomadic in their careers, I’m wondering what’s going to happen as far as passing the torch?

  45. SJ44

Trisha, FWIW, I gave you a suggestion as to dealing with your ballplayer crisis of confidence.

  46. SJ44

    “in the other thread”.

    Sorry for the typo.

  47. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

MAJOR ANNOUCEMENT February 12th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

I have only typed on this blog one time before. I knew about Teixeira’s signing ahead of time. By days.

I know something else about Teixeira, too.

And the rest of the world will know by next Tuesday, possibly as early as Saturday.

    ==============================

Lemme guess-Teixeira is coming out with a tell all book?

  48. Phil

I’m happy that it seems like the Billy Crystal era is over.

  49. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book.

SJ – I responded to you in the other thread. Please read it when you get a moment.

    :)

  50. GreenBeret7

Doreen, I think that a lot of the “Old Legend” instructors are there mainly for the older fans to see again. And, even the old goats can give good tips and advice.

  51. SJ44

    Trisha, I did, thanks.

Tex’s big annoucement? Selena Roberts was his prom date.

He deeply regrets the error and hopes his fans will support him after this difficult admission.

  52. Gman

    That’s a combined 28 World series rings between them. 10 are Yogi’s.

  53. Phil

One of Micker Rivers first duties involves showing the rookies where the dog track is.

  54. bsilva

Hector Lopez, wow, there is a name from my childhood. Haven’t thought about him in years. If I remember right, a great utility guy. Played alot in left field, though I could be wrong. Brought back that feeling I used to get as a kid listening to my transistor under the pillow so my folks wouldn’t bust me. Thanks.

  55. Art Vandelay

Stump Merrill? I’m sure the team will line up to hear his Chuck Cary and Kevin Maas stories.

  56. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

LOL SJ. Okay sadly that made me laugh.

I’m sure there is a 12 step program out there we can adapt for such a shameful admission.

  57. PAT M.

    Old # 11 himself,,,Hector Lopez the super utility player…..

  58. GreenBeret7

Pat M, not many remember Kubek as anything but a shortstop, but, for the first half of his career, he played SS, 2B, 3B, but a lot of LF, but a lot of CF, too when Mantle was hurt. Boyer also played a lot of SS. How many people besides you and me remember than the CF in 1967 and 1968 was JOE PEPITONE?

  59. Ed

What happened to Big Frank? It was always fun watching Hondo deal with the prospects out on the practice field.

  60. TJ

“Mick is going to help Gardner learn how to slap the ball though infield.”
    ….and how to play cards!

  61. GMAN

Girardi’s job will not be saved if Alex apologizes…puts up MVP numbers…hits .450 with 4 homers in the 1st round but the Yanks lose .

All Alex has to do when he arrives at camp is apologize in person…(phone apologies are for the weak) and tell Joe G he will play his heart out for the team.

Girardi will be judged by his record this year…as will Alex…and deservedly so.

  62. Mark

Goose? He was better when he was still hoping for enough votes to get into the Hall. Now he’s just a pompous windbag and whiner.

  63. Tim

Mickey Rivers – one of my all-time favorites. I loved the way he’d walk up to the plate like a 90 year old and then blaze around the bases. Pete: how’s he doing?
