CC Sabathia audio from today

Peter Abraham
February
13

Welcome readers of The Big Lead. Don’t cause any trouble.

————

Here is the full audio from CC Sabathia’s interview today. It was in the home dugout at Big Stein Field and lasted about 12 minutes. I think a listen will give you a good sense of what kind of person he is.

I have two newspaper stories to write, but I’ll check in later on.

CC (and Swisher) is just the kind of guy the Yanks need in the clubhouse.

  2. Boston Dave

People are saying all the pressure is on ARod now and not on CC, AJ, and Tex.

Well, if CC and AJ pitch well and win games… they can take the pressure OFF ARod.

Winning is the best cure. Can’t wait for the season to start.

  3. jennifer

I know some players read it, at least some of the younger guys. When Jason Giambi stopped me in the clubhouse to say he read it, I was a little stunned.

    ——————–

Be nice to the kids!! Pretty good the big G read this blog. I hope I was nice to him when he read it. :P

Real change in level of enthusiasm – air leaving the room – when the questioning turned to Alex and steroids.

    dave,

Have you caught up yet? Sorry, had to fast forward because Pete’s posting a mile a minute.

I mean this in the kindest possible way. You need to work on your perception skills. I put a wink emoticon. That meant I was teasing you. Why would I not want to tell you what AJ said? Like it’s state information or something?

I was teasing you because you trashed AJ. Again. You said you didn’t want to hear it because you wanted to see it on the field. And then you asked people to tell you what he said. Make up your mind.

And then you go on about Andy. What other choices did they have? Injured Hughes? Headcase Kennedy? Joba went down. Giese went down. Guess who was next in line? That’s right. Everyone’s favorite whipping boy, Igawa.

I’m just asking you, very politely, to please give all our players a chance. It’s spring training, but you already have AJ on the DL and penciled in 225 IP for CC.

Pete, you didn’t mention the Star Ledger in New Jersey! We’re people too! lol.

  10. Boston Dave

from Jayson Stark’s article today on ESPN:

“But the Yankees didn’t just sign the best free-agent starter on the market (CC). They also added the second-best (Burnett) — to a rotation that pitched fewer innings last year than any AL rotation except those motley crews in Baltimore and Texas. And that, friends, is what you call a serious upgrade. On the other side of the ball, you can question the price tag and length of Teixeira’s deal. But he’s still a fine fit for the middle of this order — not to mention a major leatherworking improvement on Jason Giambi. Any time the Yankees write checks this large, you can cue the violas, as owners everywhere whine about this money machine. But with $88 million coming off their books and a new ballpark opening, what did the other 29 teams expect the Yankees to do — sign John Wasdin, Mark Redman and D’Angelo Jimenez?”

  11. Ninja Burglar

Does anyone know when single tickets for the new stadium go on sale?

  12. Boston Dave

Michael Inoa is the 20th ranked prospect in all of basbeall by Baseball Prospectus.

why didnt the Yanks sign this kid again?

    Jorge: We’ll stand by Arod

Posada, Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte will attend first Press Conference

  14. Patrick Bateman

He does sound like a great guy.

    Good stuff Pete, thanks.

  15. Boston Dave

    Also,

damn Detroit for getting Rick Porcello one pick ahead of the Yanks in the draft.

At least we got Gerrit Cole (ugh)

  16. Tex's New Best Friend

Posada is the true leader of this team. I have said this since he got hurt last year. He is the difference between the playoffs and going home.

  17. SJ44

    Mel,

Dave means well. He just has high expections and doesn’t realize that these guys aren’t machines. lol

He will chill out once med school exams are done.

If not, we will have to break into the “pharmacy” and get him something to chill him out! lol

I think Boston Dave makes a great point. Its not just the talent coming to the team. Its the PEOPLE.

    High character guys.

In these days of numbers crazed fans, I don’t think one can minimize how important bringing in good guys to the team is to the teams success.

CC is good people. So are Nick, AJ and Tex.

It will change the culture of that locker room.

Some guys who were there last year had strong personalities. While they were good for the beat writers, that sometimes grated on some guys.

Sometimes, being too “honest” in a clubhouse is just as bad as being phony. Its a slippery slope.

I think it will also force Arod to either grow up and be part of the team or he will be on his own island.

Its why I think Alex will conform once all the hoopla dies down.

His career depends on it, IMO.

  18. Patrick Bateman

The Yankees came to a verbal agreement with Inoa, then his agent backed out because he heard rumors that he could get more money.

At that point the Yankees refused to do business with his agent.

  19. Tarheelyank

    That was great. Thanks pete

  20. pat

Francessa said he heard there will be no formal press conference just a dugout one like the rest of the guys.

  26. raymagnetic

Jeter > Posada. All that real captain stuff is nonsense. He’s the real captain cause he’s a hothead? What about when the real captain dissed Wang inadvertently by saying the Yankees need an Ace? Real nice of the real captain to dis the Yankees best pitcher at the time.

I wonder if the Posada bobblehad doll hs gotten off of the punishment that Nick in SF placed him under?

  27. Phil

The Yanks had a deal with Inoa and he backed out after agreeing to sign.

  28. Tex's New Best Friend

tex’s: not to downplay jorge, who i love, rasner/ponson/pavano and co were not getting us into the playoffs

To a point i agree, but even with all of them we won 89 games. I think losing Posada took a lot of steam out of the team and left the team without a stern clubhouse voice. Im sure he isnt the only one, but from what we read, he is definitely the take charge guy on the team, from the Paulie and Tino mold.

  29. Tarheelyank

Pete “The comments and page views are like crack.”

    LMAO

  30. pat

Posada gets it. He puts what it takes to win above all else.

  31. SJ44

I think there are 3 captains on this team.

Derek, Jorge, and Mo. All 3 guys are effective in their own way in leading the team.

Mariano is HUGE with the latin players. He really is. He’s like a godfather to those guys.

He’s also the perfect guy to break in young bullpen arms. He shows them how to take care of themselves and how to handle success and failure. Handling failure seperates the guys who make it from the guys who don’t.

Derek is the classic “lead by example” guy. Just because he doesn’t hold daily PC’s about what he does, doesn’t mean he isn’t effective. He is.

Ask Bernie Williams about Jeter’s “stare” and confrontational skills. Derek doesn’t take a lot of nonsense from guys.

The Yankees missed Jorge’s fire last year. Robbie Cano has a better season last year if Jorge wasn’t hurt.

He would have jacked him up WAY earlier than Girardi did to get his head out of his butt.

You can’t have a team full of fiery guys or the message gets old quickly.

You also can’t have a team full of “what will be will be” kind of guys. That also gets old quickly.

Jorge is a personality in that clubhouse that was really missed last year.

Its going to be great to have him back.

  32. Uncle Ellsworth

    It takes all types:
Mooses, Posadas, Big-Gs, Damons and Jeters etc. Let Jorge be Jorge let Derek be Derek.

When the best player on a team is constantly omitted from the team leadership discussion, that team is going to have issues, IMO.

  35. Joba-the next great Yankee closer

    1. I think AJ will have a monster year, 20 wins.

    2. CC will be a horse.

    3. Swisher will get a lot of playing time. He is fiery, something the team needs.

    4. Matsui, Damon, Nady on their walk years. I think they will keep Nady.

    5. Hope Gardner wins the CF job. Think he can be better than Melky.

Ian Kennedy is a head case? I think that’s a stretch. He’s like 23 years old and said a few things to the media he probably regrets. That doesn’t make him a head case.

  38. Doreen

    Dave -

I read your response. At this point, what’s left to say? :)

    Pete -

Great interview, I thought. It was interesting to see what led you to blogging. And – crack, indeed!

CC really does sound like a good, genuine, guy. Thanks for that audio.

It does sound like it’s going to get old very quickly asking the players about ARod and steroids. I figure once around spring training, the guys’ll be not happy about it but figure they’ll deal with it. But as the season starts getting under way, I can imagine there’ll be some less than polite reactions to any of those type questions.

  39. GrouchoNYY

    Spring Training broadcast update

There was some talk yesterday about the lack of YES gamecasts.

    There are 12.
There are additional games being telecast on other outlets (no spring training blackouts)
    (On ESPN)
    3/5 vs Minnesota
    3/20 vs Toronto

MLB Network will telecast three games daily. The early game will always be from Florida.
NO specific games are posted yet, but it seems that the Yankees will probably pop up several times.

I dont know which discussion is more tired.

  41. dave

    M,

i picked up on the sarcasm – didnt you see what i replied? I said I only asked about the press conference to be polite because i thought thats what you guys would want me to do. That wasnt a serious comment – i was kidding about that. Tarheel or somebody asked me if I had watched it but I was in a final so i thought maybe he asked because there was something of interest. But really you are right – nothing he could say will really change my perceptions. He really needs to prove it to me on the field. I dont think thats an unreasonable request though. And my suspicions about AJ go much further back than this off-season. So it is difficult for me to change my opinion of him completely just because we signed him. That will change once he actually plays for the yankees obviously. I didnt mean to come across sounding like i thought he was already destined to fail. i wanted to say that I think he can succeed but he still has to prove it and we cant just take him on his word that he is a new man. That was all I was trying to say and a lot more came out. But I DO think he can be GREAT for us and you KNOW i will be rooting for him from his first start until his last in pinstripes. But he needs to at least pitch well a couple of time for me to be able to completely change my perception of him.

  42. Phil

Didn’t seem to be a problem when Bernie was the best player on the team.

  43. Boston Dave

    Wave Your Hat,

in some cases, sure. But the Yankees are a team full of stars. ARod doesn’t need to be the leader. He needs to produce and keep his head straight.

Varitek isn’t the best player on the Sox but he is still considered their leader. The Sox won WS with Manny and he was far from their team leader.

  44. SJ44

    Wave,

    That’s true to some extent.

However, on a team like the Yankees, Arod doesn’t have to lead. They have guys with more leadership pedigree than him to lead. In that regard, its the perfect team for him if he gets his act together.

Other teams? That’s an issue. Its less of an issue with the Yankees.

That said, he still has to make changes in how he handles himself in the clubhousse.

The diva nonsense has to go.

From the clubhouse kids to the support staff, to his teammates, kindness has to be in and rudeness out.

One of the downsides of testing positive is, guys don’t want the “drama” anymore. Its no longer cute and funny.

The diva stuff? Guys will bust chops with him on that stuff and make him the butt of their jokes.

This stuff takes the diva stuff out of the equation.

Behind closes doors, I’m sure the message from Derek and Jorge will be simple:

“Shut up and play and grow up”.

Rivera, Posada, Jeter, Damon, Matsui, etc are at the stages of their careers where they don’t have 10 more years to win.

    It has to happen now.

  45. dave

Nothing left to say. Its all been said.

  46. Boston Dave

can we set up a separate chat room for people who still want to talk about AJ’s injury concerns, Joba to the bullpen, etc?

  47. E-Man

Ian Kennedy is a younger version of Kei Igawa.

Great in the minors, horrible in the majors.

I hope Ian proves me wrong.

I’d like to see something good in trade!

  48. Nick in SF

raymagnetic: It’s a new season and I’m giving Jorge’s bobblehead a new chance. So his punishment is lifted.

The fact that he said what he said just shows that the “Joba should stay in the bullpen” sickness can infect anyone.

  49. no.27

    About Joba in the bullpen.

I definitely think Joba needs to be a full time starter. He’s shown that he’s too good as a starter to not be given a chance to pitch 200 innings a year instead of 70.

At the same time, if the Yankees have CC, Wang, AJ, and Pettitte/Hughes going strong heading into October, it might make sense to have Joba in the bullpen. First of all, he’ll probably be close to his innings limits, so he might not be able to make 3 or 4 more starts. Also, the value of a starting pitcher goes down when you only need 4 instead of 5 for the playoff rotation. IMO, the value of an 8th inning guy also goes up in the playoffs when there is more pressure and games are usually closer.

  50. ATrain

Pete, I’m with you that it would be nice to talk about baseball and quit talking about steroids. So then why is your question for CC about steroids? Ask him a baseball question already!

  51. dave

    SJ,

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I think I am a little high strung these days – it probably has something to do with my 8 hours of sleep in the last four days. Nahh, its probably just nerves.

  52. Tarheelyank

“Shut up and play and grow up”

We can only hope he does that.

Am I the only one who thinks that, Sometimes in the batters box he’s thinking about how he looks. It’s almost like he’s posing. Memo to Arod see ball, hit ball.

  53. Peter Abraham

    ATrain:

Just because I don’t like he subject doesn’t mean I don’t have to do my job.

  54. G. Love

I truly think the subtraction of Abreu personality wise is going to help this team.

I am not knocking Bobby’s numbers at all. He’s a great offensive player.

But he doesn’t play with passion. He was quiet. He didn’t seem to be a leader at all. He was more of the “it’s a long season” type of guy instead of the, “let’s kick their tails now so we can relax in Sept” which was characteristic of the great Yankee teams none more so than 1998.

Abreu played a crucial role and did a great job, but he was wallpaper.

Give me a few more guys who really live and die with what happens during the season.

Jeter used to be that way and I felt his intensity was weakening over the years. He started to seem to be at his wits end with some of his teammates and gave off an impression to me that “well if they don’t care enough, what can I do?”

CC definitely feels like a big plus on the field and in the clubhouse. I also think Swisher and Texeira will be positive in that area.

Even a guy like Gardner energizes the team when you know every time he’s on 1b he’s running for his life.

The guy I worry about and will always worry about is Cano. He has a lot to prove that he really wants to put last season behind him and be the player he has the potential to be.

I’m hoping with enough new blood and positive influences guys like Cano won’t put on the pathetic display he did at times last year.

  55. no.27

“Memo to Arod see ball, hit ball.”

Memo to everyone: He’s been doing that his whole career, maybe better than anyone ever has.

  56. SJ44

Anybody that is going to med school has my respect.

    Good luck with it.

Sending out the following APB’s for some missing regulars:

    Time to come back “home”.

  57. gayle

    A train-

Come on any reporter who didnt ask CC that question would be negligible in his/her job. It would be like a business reporter not asking the Peanut company about salmonella.

The question has to be asked. it certainly was not the focus of the press interviews by any stretch of the imagination, it was not the first, second or even third question asked.

BY not asking the question reporters would be just as bad as they were for ignoring it when it happened in the 90’s

  58. Tex's New Best Friend

Alex definitely brings more than HomeRuns.
Go out, play, keep your mouth shut, and do your job.
With everyone else on the team, dont think you need to hit 60 homeruns to win.

  59. ATrain

Pete, I’ll quit trying to tell you how to do your job then. Now that I’ve made it through the rest of the interview I see that you did ask him other types of questions. BTW, these audio clips are my favorite part of your blog. Keep it up!

  60. G. Love

Oh and I agree with my pal Chien Ming Vase that Matsui will have a monster season and be comeback player of the year.

When the guy is healthy he produces and he plays the game hard.

If his knees are sound and DH’ing keeps him healthy, he’s going to be great.

  61. Drew

This has always been a curiosity for me:

Pete – When you do an interview like the one posted on The Big Lead, do they just hand you a set of questions and you type the answer? Or is that transcription of what you said to them over the phone or on a recorder? I realize that both forms are probably done, but sometimes when I read what appears to be casual face-to-face (or phone-to-phone interview), the grammar and language is too good to just a conversational tone. How was that interview done?

  62. Laura - Will it ever end?

“I truly think the subtraction of Abreu personality wise is going to help this team.”

You’re joking, right? Bobby Abreu was the problem with last year’s team? That is truly laughable. Bobby didn’t play with passion? No, he just drove in 100 RBIs for six straight years. Don’t need any passion for that.

  63. Michelle B. (X is the new black)

Friday before pitchers and catchers report and I am on my way to the basement to pull out my NY Yankee FLAG, my bobbleheads and pennants and my jersey’s. I am officially ready for baseball season to begin. It has been a long exciting off season but let get this PARTY STARTED.

    Hip Hip Jorge

  64. dave

    tarheel,

Whatever he was doing in 2007, whether it was posing at a camera or waving at the mirror in his mind, he should continue right along. Ive never seen anyone do more with a bat in my life than watching arod in 2007. If only, he could bring us another one of those next year that would certainly shut up the incessant criticism but good. This would be the perfect year for arod to be far and away the best hitter in baseball. And its the only way most of the media will shut up.

  65. dave

    MYGIRL,

I see a trend – everything you post here is meaningless, annoying and we all just wait for the day that we never have to read another one of your obnoxious, idiotic posts. That is the only trend I see.

  66. AG

Does anyone know the date that single tickets go on sale for the *regular* season (at Yankee Stadium, obviously)?

I swear I remember reading March 3 as the date, but now I can’t find the answer and figured someone here would probably know off the top of his (or her!) head.

    G. Love, you confirmed almost every concern I had in your 3:22 post.

Abreu and Cano showed a lack of effort, Jeter frustrated by his team, the Yankees being infused with guys who care (CC, Tex), and the need for a guy like Gardner to WIN the CF spot.

  73. dave

    lLaura,

Its tradition – the annual winter addition by subtraction argument. Player X was emotionless/cancerous/heartless/a bad role-model for the young guys so the team is going to be better now that he is not around. People say that about someone ever year – it is the natural order of things. G Love was just fulfilling the quota for this year but its not like he said bobby was a terrible player.

  74. Tex's New Best Friend

Have you ever won a title in anything baseball related?

    AG,

The Yanks are still mirred in the relocation of season ticket holders. They finished the full season ticket holders relocation and just started the 41 game plan holders relocation about 2 weeks ago. The 20 and 15 game ticket plan holders havent heard a word from the Yankees. I doubt ticket sales will go public for at least another month.

speeding up Selena Roberts’ National Enquirer type book may be a good thing.

    Boston Dave –
I wish it was, but I’m afraid we will hear more from Ms. Roberts before her April book date. WEEI discussed this earlier today -
    I posted about it here.

Selena Roberts is a man-hater. She’s attacked Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Mark Cuban, Bob Ryan, and now Alex Rodriguez.

There are unconfirmed reports of the 3rd string kicker of her high school football team giving her a Cincinnati Steam Roller on Prom Night. So far there are only 2 second hand sources, but I’m hoping, in the interest of good journalism, that the guy who did it comes forward soon. I know if it was me, I’d want everyone to know.

  90. DT

Cashman’s take on “the book” – per ESPN 1050 Kay interview

“I’m not goin to read it. It’s not a true representation of the Yankee years. Why bother.”

  92. Boston Dave

Thanks DT. I’m going to go puke now :)

  93. dave

    DT,

Someone was trying to tell me the other day that the yanks dont even care anymore and that number 6 will most definitely be retired. Its pretty clear the medias coverage of a topic does not reflect how annoyed the yanks FO gets at that topic. Just because the media stopped covering torre’s book because they moved on to bigger and more annoying things, doesnt mean that the yankees forgot all about it as well. I dont think number six will ever be retired at this point. They might as well give it away now so torre has no delusions that he is somehow in good graces with the franchise.

  94. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

And Big Daddy Brandon Jacobs has been franchised !

Your not going anywhere buddy

  95. Boston Dave

I would hold off on #6. Maybe there will be a happy ending.

If not, give it to de Jesus!

  96. pat

Manny will sign with the Dodgers in about 3 weeks.

He always shows up to Spring Training late.

  97. dave

Can you blame selena for hating guys after she witnessed the fallout of the terrible atrocity at Duke?

Oh wait a minute…. Thats right… She helped CAUSE the terrible atrocity at Duke. No wonder the media always seem to conveniently forget about that even – its so difficult to remember something so mundane.(sarcasm)

  98. pat

    First Torre questions about A-Rod/steroids.

  99. dave

If Hank and Hal are anything like their father – We might as well give number six to the first guy out of the minors this year because its not going any further than that.

  100. trisha - want the truth? Read Canseco's book

Just wanted to say it must be a trip for AJ and CC to see what “real” press conferences are all about.

    :)

  101. trisha - want the truth? Read Canseco's book

“I’m not goin to read it. It’s not a true representation of the Yankee years. Why bother.”

    MY HERO!

  102. MikeEff

good news about jacobs! i haven’t seen you around much brandon.. been on vacation or something?

  103. NO HYPE

omg i am so sick of this A-Rod crap. nobody gave Joba sh*t when he was caught DRIVING DRUNK and could have killed himself and/or others but when A-Rod is caught using a nearly harmless substance which improves his health and is non-detrimental to anybody else he is completely ripped on? What about the CRACK HEAD Josh Hamilton? Oh no hes a hero! Fu*k that!

  104. Patrick

“Selig not ruling out stripping Bonds of the home run title and giving it back to Aaron.”

Bud Selig is blithering idiot. Enough said.

Can you blame selena for hating guys after she witnessed the fallout of the terrible atrocity at Duke?
    ________

You mean when the girl lied and said three guys raped her and trashed these guys lives and Roberts jumped on the bandwagon until she learned what most of us knew from the beginning, that it wasnt true???

Let’s all feel bad for Selena the Saint.

  106. Patrick

“A-Rod is caught using a nearly harmless substance”

I see your point but steroids are NOT harmless.

  107. NO HYPE

Selena Roberts is a moron and I could care less about her

  108. JoeyA

    SJ-
    Who fires the Commissioner?

I’m completely ignorant to that type of hierarchy in the MLB, but how would Bud be fired?

Would it be a committee type thing?

  109. Tex's New Best Friend

Bud Selig looks dumber and dumber each time he opens his mouth. Taking the title from Bonds doesnt change the fact he has more homeruns.

How bout they take all the money Bud made during the steroid years back from him?

  110. dave

    Trisha,

Did you see some of the stuff keith law said in his Q and A yesterday? I barely know the guy but from now on, when someone asks me who my hero is – I say Law. He was brilliant and flawless in his responses. The kind of answers most yankee fans only see coming out of a sports writer in their wildest dreams.

  111. Tarheelyank

Which book is DT talking about? Roberts or Torre?

  112. DT

    good point Dave.
The main stream media will run with the latest and hotest story. Cashman was hurt by the book you can tell. (listen to the last 3-4 minutes of the Kay interview when he gets the podcast up)

The Yankees won’t do anything with #6 for awhile. If they gave it out – it would create PR news and they don’t need the pub. (plus there are still many Torre supporters out there)

The longer they wait – the easier it will be, if they decide to hand out that number again.

I agree it won’t be retired. Too many burned bridges. This will all come up again when Torre gets the HOF call.

  113. NO HYPE

    Steroids = nearly harmless

With side effects like hair loss, shrinking testicles, gynomastia, acne compared to PRESCRIPTION DRUGS like Xanax and Zoloft that can actually kill you I would say they are nearly harmless. To date there has been no medically documented death caused directly because of steroids.

  114. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

‘good news about jacobs! i haven’t seen you around much brandon.. been on vacation or something?’

    Yup a bit of R&R and ….. :D

  115. SJ44

Owners would have to do it and they will never do it.

Bud is the perfect commissioner for the owners. He’s a complete pawn for them to do whatever they want.

    The book already out. TYY.

  117. Drive 4-5

The postseason of A Rod that we should all be really angry about was the ‘04 ALDS against the Twins.

If A Rod hadnt hit .421 with 3 doubles and a homer we never would have won that series and eventually choke to Boston.

A hex on A Rod. I’m glad Roberts wrote her trashy novel.Life has been hell since ‘04!

  118. Patrick

    “Selena Roberts is a man-hater.”

Come on dude that’s absurd. Most popular sports figures are men. Roberts is a sports writer and sports writers sometimes criticize people in the sports world. Therefore if she criticizes ANYONE she’s a man-hater?

  119. NO HYPE

Let me clarify… steroids/anabolics are prescription drugs but are not prescribed often. Other drugs like Xanax, Zoloft, Ambien etc are given out often and are a greater health risk for numerous reasons.

  120. DT

The commisioner is appointed by the owners. They can get rid of him by a vote.

It won’t happen. They love him.

  121. Yankees 'N More

Pete, could you please expose the goof who asked CC the following question: “What was your first thought when you heard about ARod and the steroids? Was it that you can’t believe your career with the Yankees is starting this way?”

The first question is FINE… Tacking on your own answer before Sabathia has a chance to speak is RIDICULOUS!

  122. Wave Your Hat

Far be it from me to defend Selig (I won’t even do it to twit SJ), but my guess is most of the owners love him. Baseball revenues have skyrocketed during his tenure.

  123. SJ44

Get out your moral soapboxes people, Joel Sherman coming on the Kay show in a minute.

Some of these guys would be smart to get the moral soapbox sponsored.

    C’mon, show some creativity.

I would love to hear to Kay introduce guys like Sherman and Madden when they get on their moral soapboxes the following way:

“Coming up on the Michael Kay Show is Joel Sherman. His moral soapbox is sponsored by The Catholic Church. When you have sinned, confession is the only way to go”.

Something along those lines would suffice.

  124. G. Love

I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that Abreu and Cano didn’t exactly play the game with passion.

Abreu is a great player and puts up great numbers, but he’s a bit of a compiler.

I felt towards the end of last season he started playing harder to beef us his stats when the Yankees were out of it and the number of games were dwindling. All of sudden he started running and stealing bases when the games didn’t count. It just struck me the wrong way.

And if you think Cano played last season with passion, you’re high. The guy played some games like he’d rather be anywhere else but on the field. He gets a fresh start this year and hopefully he’ll take advantage of it.

And for the record, Abreu was a great offensive player in Philly too and they didn’t win jack until he was dealt. I’m not saying it’s all him, but he’s almost like having a living breathing rotisserie player in your lineup.

And where did I say Gardner for CF? I said when he gets on the bases he energizes the team. That could be as a pinch runner late inning defensive replacement you know.

If Melky hits, I have no problem with him playing CF.

If Melky plays like he did last season they should waive him.

  125. Patrick

    “Steroids = nearly harmless”

You can keep asserting this but that doesn’t make it true. You don’t have to believe me, just ask any doctor if steroids are harmless.

  126. Doreen

Roberts’ book . The release date was moved up one month and the title was changed so that no one could have any doubt at all about what/whom it is about.

  127. Tex's New Best Friend

NY Media wants to drive good players away from the Yankees?

Keep bugging them about A-Rod’s problems.

Not only will CC be aching to leave, but no one will want to sign when they can go somewhere else and not talk about a-rod.

  128. Drive 4-5

Is there anything more ironic than watching the talking heads babble about steroids and peds until they go to a commercial break for Cialis or Viagra?

  129. pat

Torre 12 minutes into his press conference and they haven’t asked about the Dodgers yet.

  130. dave

    tex’s new best friend,

You realize that I was being sarcastic with that right? I even put the word sarcasm in parenthesis at the end, to make sure no one was confused and I think you still thought i was being serious. But im not quite sure where you were going with your comment so I cant be certain if you took me seriously or not. I just think she jumped on the bandwagon and crucified those guys before they were ever heard before a judge. Selena has everyone believing they should be dragged off to a guillotine somewhere without any real proof that they were guilty. Irs just irresponsible journalism and everything from that on in should really undermine her credibility. Instead Michael Kay goes on for five minutes before the interview saying how credible and what a great reporter she is – he even got david cone on who started saying how wonderful she was. Does no one remember this story? It was not even that long ago. Talk about a selective memory.

  131. Patrick

NO HYPE you are a joke dude. Steroids are not prescribed often? That’s hilarious. It is a very common prescription for several different ailments.

  132. Tex's New Best Friend

If Melky plays like he did last season they should waive him.

Melky had a really good April, so there is hope he can hit. Hopefully he can do that consistantly.

    it’s all about sound bytes.

Maddy and Sherman may say something stupid – but they do speak their mind.

There are no good quotes and bad quotes in radio. Anything to generate buzz is good.

  135. Tarheelyank

“I’m not goin to read it. It’s not a true representation of the Yankee years. Why bother.”

That is a strong condemnation from Cashman. I knew he was disapointed, but that’s a strong statement.

  136. Tex's New Best Friend

    Dave i did realize that…

But the point is the same.

  137. jennifer

SHerman just pointed out that the new release date on the book is two days before the new stadium opens.

Funny statement. IF what they say is stupid and they are speaking their mind the conclusion is that they are stupid people. I agree.

  140. jennifer

Don’t know if it was pointed out either. But Kay asked Cash if they thought about getting out of Alex’s contract. He didn’t say not, than went an into I’m not a lawyer. Seems to me they looked into it.

  141. Peter Abraham

You guys crack me up. You do nothing except whine about steroids coverage. So I do nothing except baseball all day and you still whine about steroids coverage.

Trisha, have some class. Just have some class. No swearing, contrived swearing, etc. No swearing, period.

  142. dave

    patrick,

The only problem is that selena does not criticize when she writers – she goes for the jugular every time. I am convinced she gets a thrill out of destroying peoples lives and making people suffer from her own stories. I dont think she is a man hater but i think she likes the power of slowly dismantling a person’s reputation with every key she hits. If she wants to destroy someones life – at least she could target someone who deserves it. There are a lot of renowned people in this world that have done horrible things. Im pretty sure arod is NOT one of them not will anything good come from his demise. Her book only seems like further proof that she is out for the kill — arod is already down on the ground, gushing blood and she is going to pour salt on the wounds. It is a dangerous game selena is playing because if the book is severe enough, people will really start to question her motives.

  143. trisha - want the truth? Read Canseco's book

Pete sorry, it was joke contrived swearing. Gotcha though. Do you have any information on why the publication date was moved up?

  144. Michelle B. (X is the new black)

Nick: I punished them for doing so poorly last season!

  145. trisha - want the truth? Read Canseco's book

dave, I didn’t see the Keith Law stuff. Where can I find it?

  146. no.27

    ““Selena Roberts is a man-hater.”

Come on dude that’s absurd. Most popular sports figures are men. Roberts is a sports writer and sports writers sometimes criticize people in the sports world. Therefore if she criticizes ANYONE she’s a man-hater?”

There’s a difference between criticizing people and what she does. Look at what she did with the Duke Lacrosse story. Read the crap she wrote about Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan during the rape case. She attacks these guys’ characters and calls it journalism.

There are plenty of journalists who criticize athletes when they mess up. She specifically goes after athletes who are accused of mistreating women and attacks them. Type in “selena roberts” “kobe bryant” into google and read what comes up. Is a writer’s personal opinion supposed to ooze out of their stories like it does with her?

I’m positive that she wouldn’t be writing this book about him if the stories about cheating on his wife never came out.

  147. Drive 4-5

Sorry Pete. I know I try to stay focussed on the baseball but I’m afaid we’ve all become jaded. It seems for every baseball story today there’s someome else doing an interview about A Rod or a press release about Roberts’ book. Keep posting about the Yanks. It’s our only hope for sanity.

  148. trisha - want the truth? Read Canseco's book

Okay I see my parody post went south. So I will summarize what I said, without any fake swearing.

I believe Selena Roberts publication date is moved up because they didn’t expect any groundswell of sympathy for Arod and yet it happened. I believe that Torre, Verducci and Roberts and an evil triumverate and whether their main purpose was to take Arod down or the Yankees down, it didn’t work. So now Roberts needs to up the ante a bit.

And here’s the great thing about being American. It really doesn’t matter to me if Pete or anyone else agrees with my theory. Because you know what? Nothing says I’m not on to something.

  149. Brad

The position players are a few days away from reporting and the A-Rod story has been worn down to a frazzle already.
It’s reached boring proportions. How much more can be said ? Are certain people afraid that actual baseball will be played ?

  150. Boston Dave

    the Keith Law chat:

Jorge has been the assistant Captain of this team for several years.
Anybody that hasn’t seen it just isn’t paying attention.

  156. Today's Burning Questions

What will tomorrow’s A-Rod steroid questions be for the pitchers and catchers before and after their first day of workouts ?

Same as we’ve been hearing ?

By a stroke of luck, a new media question not yet asked ?

  157. tantron willoughby

I’m surprised no one asked when Sabathia last took roids. We shall know someday.

  158. Kim Jones' Husband

    Patrick,

How many people do you know are on a doctor prescribed regimen of testosterone and an anabolic such as anavar?

Now think of how many people take Cialis/Viagra/Levitra.

Big discrepancy. Steroids are only prescribed for muscle wasting diseases such as AIDs, MS, etc and it is becoming increasingly difficult for these people to acquire steroid prescriptions even though they work very well.

I can’t simply go to my Dr. and tell him “my performance in the gym isn’t what it used to be when I was 20 years old, can you give me some testosterone so I can start building muscle again?” But if I was having trouble getting a woody, that same Dr. would have no problem prescribing me Viagra and even giving me free samples.

I know a lot more about steroids than you forgot so you should just take my word for it Patrick…

  159. gianthinker (Sign Juan Cruz!!!)

Was CC on a lawn mower?

  160. gianthinker

I think the four new guys we brought in are exactly the kinds of people, let alone, players the Yankees have needed for years. CC is electric on and off the field. Teixeira is a sweaky clean guy who speaks very well. Kind of a Derek Jeter with power. AJ is an accountable and confident guy. He can be another Carl Pavano or he could emerge as the ace because of his superior stuff. Either way, unlike Miss….I mean, Mr. Pavano, AJ will work hard through injury and NYers respect that. Nick Swisher might be the best acquisition Ca$hman made all off-season, cost-wise. I’m a fan of keeping Swisher and IF he sticks around he’ll prove to be an invaluable part of our roster IMO. He’s good enough to start as 1B or a corner OF spot and should, therefor, strengthen our bench GREATLY if he doesn’t start in RF. Swisher sees an amazing amount of pitches each at-bat. I’m hoping he finds his way into our lineup but, like I said before, he’d give us a very good sub off the bench if thats how we choose to use him this season. I honestly think this is the first off-season I actually like all of our acquisitions in the off-season. AJ is the only question mark for me and his stuff and the fact that we signed CC in addition to AJ settles my butterflies. IF, and thats a big IF, AJ can stay healthy from now on we’ll have a VERY strong rotation for years. Cross your fingers.
