Sabathia will do his part — and more

Here’s what kind of pitcher the Yankees have on top of their rotation.

When the Milwaukee Brewers were trying to make the playoffs last season, CC Sabathia was pitching deep into games and working on three days rest because they were short a starter.

Knowing his most prestigious client was about to become a free agent, agent Greg Genske tried to put a stop to it.

“I had to shut my phone off and block his calls,” Sabathia said. “He was pretty upset about it. He was freaking out. … I felt fine. Nobody asked me to do that. I wanted to.”

Sabathia said he feels fine — “I feel great, to be honest with you,” he said. — and doesn’t regret what he did.

“I’d do it again,” he said.

Sabathia also said he has purchased a home in New Jersey and will live there year-round. Beyond how he pitches, I think fans are really going to like Sabathia. He seems to have an engaging personality.

A.J Burnett, meanwhile, was asked what he thought of Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain being on the back end of the rotation.

“I’m not sure there is a back end,” he said.

    Yay CC

  2. Garym(Yanks and More)

CC is the man, are you going to have audio later Pete?

  3. Tex's New Best Friend

CC seems like a real class guy.

This is definitely a guy we need on our team to lighten up what comes off like a overly professional environment.

I for one am tickled pink at the thought of AJ and CC, with Joba and Wang. I’ll learn to love Pettitte again too.

  4. wood is good

    BUT WHAT ABOUT A-ROD???

    Only joking, only joking!!!

Man, I love A.J.’s reply. Good attitude–and I agree with him!

CC, A.J., Teixeira…great adds. I hope they eventually get some attention, if you get my drift….

  5. Bronx Jeers

All good stuff. Can’t wait to see these guys pitch.

Now imagine all this without the specter of you know who coming to camp.

  6. Phil

    great stuff, thanks, Pete!

  7. Tex's New Best Friend

Look, if it wasnt the questions about the roids, it would be able the torre book. Either way, everyone was going to make alex a distraction. they will play through it.

  8. Doreen

Thanks Pete, this was fun to read. Can’t wait to watch them both pitch in the pinstripes (and the road greys, too!).

  9. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

  10. frits

    Oh hell yes.

  11. CaptainsCorner

I hope they have started wrapping AJ in his bubble wrap. Also please keep Pavano’s old locker(if he even had one) empty. Do not give it to AJ or CC!!

  12. jennifer

    CaptainsCorner

Pavano hasn’t had a locker in Tampa in 3 years, no worries. :P

  13. Patrick

That’s so awesome, CC is a warrior.

  14. Tarheelyank

Pavano hasn’t had a locker in Tampa in 3 years

No, but they did supply him with a gurney.

  15. dave

    Tarheel and m,

I just asked to make you guys happy so it looks like i am interested in what he has to say, But if you guys dont want to tell me, I dont mind. And i hope you were kidding about the 20 innings tarheel. We are paying this guy almost 17 mil per season – I would say if he cant pitch 200 innings at age 32, the signing wont look so great next year. But thas just me. im sure you will be perfectly happy with 150 and a few good press conferences. I am sorry that I would like to see AJ live up to his contract. I know 17 mil for a pitcher doesnt seem like a lot for the yanks but when you put it in perspective, he is being payed the same rate as some of the best pitchers in the game. i dont think 200 innings is an unreasonable expectation. You shouldnt either.

  16. kd

positive yankee news? when was that possible again?

am i the only one that thinks that when this team actually gets on the field the rest of baseball is going to be just a little more nervous?

  17. Boston Dave

just hope the high innings totals of the last two seasons don’t affect CC.

No evidence that they will, but 241 (2007) and 253 (2008) are a lot of innings pitched.

Even though he can pitch 250 innings, I think the Yankees would be wise to pull him a little early on occasion if they are leading somewhat comfortably. Better to be on the safe side and try to keep his innings closer to 180-200 than 250.

  18. Patrick

dave you are a psychopath dude…

  19. Boston Dave

    dave,

i thought you had ZERO time… leave AJ alone. your concerns are valid but they’ve been debated ad nauseum. I say all of this in a loving way, of course.

  20. dave

    doreen,

I responded to your post about selig but its still in the last thread. Id post it on this one but i dont want to hear 15 people asking me why i like to write novels instead of posts. ENJOY!

  21. darkmoonfire

“I’m not sure there is a back end”

    Now, that’s a quote!

  22. lardin

anyone hear the story the CC’s agent called the Brewers and told their GM to stop pitching CC on three days rest. CC called his agent and told him to stop.

CC is a team player. He doesnt place himself above the rest of the team. If the best chance for the Yankees to win is to have CC on the mound, then so be it. He will be there. regardless of days in between starts.

  23. dave

    Patrick,

I know what kind of fan wants their players to live up to their contract. Especially pitchers, i must be out of my mind.

  24. Patrick

Yeah man that’s exactly what I was referring to. I think you’re crazy because you expect a $17 million pitcher to throw 200 innings. You got it buddy.

  25. dave

    Boston Dave,

Of course! I wouldnt have taken it any other way.

  26. ALB3

When AJ goes down, Phil will come up.

There’s a positive side to everything.

  27. dave

After pavano and igawa, you think I would have learned my lesson. But for some reason, I like to think that pitchers would gain some sort of motivation from seeing that kind of money in their bank account like feeling like they should actually earn it. I know, its crazy talk, but still. ….

  28. Doreen

    dave -

I saw your response and responded on the other post. I want to leave the CC and AJ stuff fun! :)

  29. Tex's New Best Friend

The Yankees have a real bullpen. The will not let CC go every 3rd day for 9 innings.

  30. Ninja Burglar

    Giggidy Giggidy Goo!!!

  31. Ninja Burglar

did single tickets go on sale yet?

  32. gdamac

Possibly the smartest investment the Yanks have made since purchasing the rights to a fellow by the name of George H. Ruth from the hated Red Sux.

  33. Nate

Glad to hear you approve PA. CC is a good guy. Known him since he was about 8 or 9. I’m very happy that he’s a Yankee now.
