    A-Jax with 82

Long shot he makes the team

  2. Carl

Are you gonna post audio Pete?

  3. jennifer

How insane! Not a number to be had. soon we’ll be at guy #1, #2 #3 etc.

Ask Rob Cacooza (sp) what he will do in the next few years when there aren’t any numbers left.

  4. Al from BK

Finally real baseball! Great seeing the names all in one place.

  5. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

I was wondering about what happened to the Star Ledger’s baseball coverage

    http://thebiglead.com/?paged=2

The Newark Star-Ledger, like many newspapers, is a sinking ship. Sources tell us that in an effort to rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic further cut costs – after shedding 40 percent of its newsroom – the Ledger has gotten into an agreement with the New York Daily News to share content. The Daily News will “give” all of its baseball beat stories to the Ledger, and the Ledger will “give” all of its Devils and Nets coverage to the Daily News. Sources tell us that the Star-Ledger’s three-person baseball team – Ed Price, Dan Graziano, and Jeremy Cothran – have all left the paper. We also hear the paper is close to hiring one baseball writer – they’ve targeted someone in Miami – even though it’s the most important sport in the NY-NJ area. Wonder how breaking news will work? If the Daily News gets a huge story, will the beat writer have to hand it to one of the columnists – whose copy the Star-Ledger won’t get?

Cashman on with Kay at 3:20pm

  6. Al from BK

Melancon, 78? I like the sound of that!

  7. Patrick

Berroa took #14? Thats the same number as Yankee greats Luis Sojo, Enrique Wilson and Miguel Cairo! BOOOOOOO!

Actually its kind of funny, #14 is like the Yankees Crappy Utility Infielder designated number.

  8. Phil

    Lou Piniella was also #14.

  9. gayle

    Re The Star Ledger

The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star Telegram also went into a similar deal with their sports departments of course the only sport they will not share is the Dallas Cowboys where they will each have their own people. Thus is the business of newspapers these days.

  10. Chien-Ming Vase

one thing they can do to create more #’s would be to use 01, 03, 04, 05… for the guys who will be leaving for minor league camp early.

i dont think anybody’s gonna mistake andrew brackman for babe ruth if he gets 03.

  11. tim boat

Maybe numbers wouldn’t be in short supply if the team didn’t insist on retiring numbers that have no business being retired.

44 and 49 come to mind for starters. How many years was Reggie here? 5?

  12. Tarheelyank

    Hey pete

how about some Q & A with Pena, Long, Eiland. What thier goals are this spring, etc.

  13. pat

    Thanks Connie!

  14. Chien-Ming Vase

im guessing tim boat is under 30

  15. Patrick

    “Lou Piniella was also #14.”

I know but he was actually a good player and that doesn’t jive with my theory that crappy utility players are given the #14.

  16. Phil

Ron Guidry was one of the greatest pitchers in Yankee History and a team captain. That’ll get you retired.

  17. Tex's New Best Friend

    Will they start using letters?

Now batting, number 11A, Bobbbbbbb Smith!!!!

  18. Tex's New Best Friend

And some numbers may not get retired, but you will be heckled until you cry if you wear 21 or 51.

  19. Chris

Shelley Duncan doesn’t deserve # 17…or any number for that matter.

  20. TheChuckKnoblog

Thanks for the info Pete I used this on my blog (listing you as a source of course)

  21. saucY

    fascinating…

  22. JLatter

I am so pumped to have a Cody Ransom jersey, I was hoping Tex would take 12 oh well

  23. rbj

I can’t wait to see the first #100

  24. Berk32

We are many many many years away from seeing a # above 100 – its not like they are going to retire a dozen #s from the people currently on the team….

  25. Drive 4-5

What, no hyperlink to each players bio & stats?

    Joking!:) Nice job. Thanks Pete.

  26. AD

    Big C!

  27. Sean

    “”"”JLatter

I am so pumped to have a Cody Ransom jersey, I was hoping Tex would take 12 oh well”"”"

Don’t be surprised if Austin Jackson eventually takes over #12.

  28. Mike from North Carolina

uh oh.. jason johnson took pavano’s number.. not a good choice

  29. Bobby

    Hey, Everybody!!!!!!!!!!

Does this group of players look like a WS Championship Team?
    ??????????????????????
    ??????????????????????
    ??????????????????????

  30. Mitchell

    Why no 69?

  31. yanksince57-was this 1959 or is it 1965?

in the year that billy martin brought over 100 players to st how were they numbered?

  32. Winfield killed my seagull

when did phil hughes decide to go back to 65? wasn’t he 34 last year?

  33. Don

Moose Skowron was also number 14, not a bad player.

  34. the Hedgehog vs. the Fox

I don?t usually reply to posts but I will in this case. WoW :) You made me think.
