Second workout set to begin

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 15, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s a pleasant 70 degrees in Tampa but there is a chance of rain as the pitchers and catchers gather for their second workout.

Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang will throw in the bullpen today. CMW has already been off the mound several times as he reported to Tampa early. The only non-catcher in camp is Hideki Matsui, who can show up early because he is a rehab player. All he really does is jog and take batting practice.

Under the terms of the collective-bargaining agreement, players are not allowed to start working out with the team until a certain date. That is why Derek Jeter, Nich Swisher, Brett Gardner, etc. are at the minor-league complex. Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera are at the team complex in the Dominican.

The position players report on Monday and the first full-squad workout is Tuesday.

Back later with some reports from the field.

    Hey Pete,
I thought the WBC guys were allowed to report early if they want?

I’ll start this off with the obligatory “I hate you Peter for being at Spring Training enjoying the 70 degree weather” post.

Are Matsui’s knees in good enough shape to see any significant time in the field, or is he pretty much a full time DH now?

with all the long toss going on i thought this might be an interesting long toss video.
the guys throwing end up going well over 300 ft.
300 ft translates to 90 mph.
at the end of the video session when they throw 60 ft on flat ground, they hit 93mph on the radar gun.
    that’s impressive.

    Is Phil throwing today, Pete?

Thanks for the video Randy. If it was warm out I’d walk out to the field across from my apartment and start throwing lol.

randy – wonderful video. My wife looked at it with me, and we are amazed by the accuracy of the throws. Just amazing.

Mo is simply an efficient killing machine, bloodless – he makes these other closers look like children. I was watching a commercial on MLB network and saw highlights of Brad Lidge pulling a Jonathan Paplebon as the last out was recorded. He sank to his knees and basically looked like a psychopath. LOL People have the right to celebrate any way they wish, but boy (a) that just looks WEIRD, with the facial expressions and (b) I much prefer Mo’s gentle pumpfist.

Mo has cat-like reflexes – he’s beautiful to watch when he fields his position. I can never criticize him, I admit it. I have a hard time even just getting upset when he blows a save because I know he feels worse. They should just waive the 5 year waiting period for the HOF when Mo retires, lol. I can’t even think of life as a Yankee fan without him……..

I’m glad position players are reporting on Monday, not Tuesday. I want to be able to relish seeing Tex in pinstripes for the first time – reading articles, that sort of thing -before things go crazy on Tuesday when Alex holds his press conference.

Betsy – Mo has long been my favorite Yankee. I know we shouldn’t look to these guys as any sort of role model, but Mo is the exception to hold up to little kids. He’s very professional, works hard, is the best EVER at what he does. Yet, he is very quiet and dignified about it, and always respects everyone else.

I keep thinking about a post that CB (BTW, where has he/she gone?) put up, where he looked at the ERA+ rankings of all pitchers ever, and decided that they fell into two groups – Mariano Rivera, and everyone else. I googled ERA+, and looked at the data myself, and he’s absolutely right.

There’s Mariano Rivera, and then there’s everyone else.

    Amazing.

Betsy — Those guys may look like idiots but when you win the championship, especially for the first time, I think you can get a pass for just losing all control lol I think though that when you close out a 4-2 Tuesday Night game in May there is no need to scream and yell and do the dancing routine. To each their own and I’m with you, quiet dignity is the way to go in general though. I think it was Lombardi who said it first, but there’s a football saying, something like: When you score a touchdown don’t dance around, “Act like you’ve been there before, and you’ll be there again.”

The amazing thing about Rivera is how he is universally respected and held in awe by everybody around MLB. Very few players have ever achieved that. Even Cal Ripken was sniped at a bit in his career. The only person who has even taken what could be a shot at Rivera was papelbon last year before the ASG. Even players who hit game winners against Mariano almost apologize for it, and feel they were lucky to get something to hit.

Hopefully, they can get some practice in before it starts to rain. It already started to rain here, but I’m further west.

  15. Mark Messier February 15th, 2009 at 10:55 am

So with position player reporting, I guess we can expect pretty much a circus tomorrow. Is the one who will remain nameless scheduled to show up or is he coming in at a later date?…Pete?

  16. sevrox February 15th, 2009 at 11:12 am

‘the one who will remain nameless’?

    So Arod is actually Voldemort?

    Figures.

  17. Mark Messier February 15th, 2009 at 11:48 am

no… I just didn’t want to set off a fire storm but around here thats nearly impossible with some of the rigid personalities that loom… so I guess it does figure

  18. HB February 15th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

What is the workout schedule like? Do they practice every day and what time? Would love to make it out there on a weekday.

    Thanks!

Joe and Betsy… while Mo IS God, all the other career ERA+ pitchers are starters. There are very few RPs with 1000 IP. And of those with 1000 IP, very few are hard throwers.

Pedro is pretty impressive at #2, 10 pts higher then anyone else. And nice to see Moose there, with a better ERA+ then CC and Peavy.
