Wrapping up Day 3

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 16, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As you might imagine, much of the talk today was about A-Rod’s impending arrival. Those With Rings, CC Sabathia, A,.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira will be attending the press conference along with Joe Girardi, Brian Cashman and many of the coaches.

As to the baseball …

· Francisco Cervelli has upper respiratory infection and was excused from camp. … Jason Johnson (personal reasons) got the day off as well.

· At the request of Brian Cashman, CC Sabathia shaved off his beard. That’s one crisis solved.

· Mark Teixeira said his parents would kill him if he took steroids. “In my mind, it’s a drug and my family has zero tolerance for that,” he said. Teixeira was a rookie with Texas in 2003 and said he had no idea about the apparent drug culture there.

· Cashman said his preference at this point is to start the season with Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher on the roster.

· Joba Chamberlain is already boys with Sabathia and Nick Swisher. Then again Joba is pretty much boys with everybody.

    I’m boys with CC.

  2. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Cash is a stick in the mud!!!

Nice to see he’ll have a lot of support at the pc. I just hope it won’t be Chinese water torture to Alex.

Is it time for the Yanks to reconsider their stance on facial hair? What’s the harm in a neatly trimmed beard. The day the facial hair ban is gone is the day we’ll officially know George’s imprint is no longer on the club.

  4. Westerner99 February 16th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Will the press conference be carried on YES?

  5. benny blanco February 16th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Its great to see that the newcomers are attending the news conference. Good for them!

  6. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Yeah as long as it isn’t messy, I don’t see the problem with it.

  7. Skinnyhead February 16th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Please Mark, don’t tell us you didn’t know. Just say nothing.

  8. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

geez if it is not one thing with Hampton it is another. He has an irregular heart beat.

I agree, Skinny. At this point, I don’t believe there was ANY player or coach/manager who wasn’t aware of what was happening.

    Thoughts from Ortiz

I wonder what possible reason A-Rod will have in justifying lying about Roberts breaking in to his house?

  12. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

I think Alex has a problem with exaggerating. She was probably knocking on his door and in his deep twisted mind, he perceived it to be breaking in.

  13. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

I think tomorrow will be like a car wreck. You don’t want to look, but you do.

  14. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 16th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

David Ortiz said that he thinks that those caught using steroids should receive a season long ban. Really, David? I wonder if your thoughts on this matter aren’t clouded by the fact that you’ve quit using and therefore can’t be on the bad end of that punishment.

I really wish that current players would just shut their traps about steroids and concentrate on baseball. Their comments just come off so disingenuous.

“Will the press conference be carried on YES?”

Mike Francesa just said that it will be on YES tomorrow.

  16. Vanessa February 16th, 2009 at 2:33 pm

I wonder which reporter will be the guy that’ll ask the ‘intended to make you mad’ questions.

  17. benny blanco February 16th, 2009 at 2:33 pm

The news conference should be on YES.

  18. James February 16th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

That 2003 texas team still had palmeiro, juan gone (along with arod) on it; pudge one year removed. You’d think he must have heard some mention/joking about it.

  19. Joe from Long Island February 16th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

    1. I already like Tex. That comment he made about his parents killing him if he did steroids gives me the impression that he’s a good kid (I know he’s an adult, but, when you reach my age you start to view a lot of adults as “kids”).

    2. I remember when Swish was with Oakland and grew his hair long, to donate it to a cancer charity. CC looks to be a top-notch guy, also. Joba could do a lot worse than hanging aroung two guys like that.

  20. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Laura- I thought the same thing. Guy goes from being a small dude, to being as big as a house and all of a sudden hits homeruns. HMMM

Lord-Lisa from Whitestone now a regular caller with Kay too? Here she is again..

  22. jennifer February 16th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Kay is carrying on today. Said he wants a reporter to ask him what he thinks about what some idiot on SNL said about him. WHAT?

  23. pat February 16th, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Generation III= most annoying phrase ST 2008

“Those With Rings”= most annoying phrase ST 2009

Isn’t AJ redundant? He has a ring. Damon does too so what category does he fit in?

A-Rod should thank them for their support publicly but tell them his issue to deal with and they can skip the circus.

  24. benny blanco February 16th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Arod cannot justify his lying. He got caught out there and was upset with roberts for exposing him. Someone needs to tell him to be as honest as possible and answer every question to the best of his ability.

  25. Bronx Jeers February 16th, 2009 at 2:41 pm

The beard rule could go bye bye at this point in time.

Pete, I dare you ask Tex if he’s familiar with the term “loosy-goosy”

  26. Tex's New Best Friend February 16th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Alex may have actually felt like he was being stalked. Someone he doesnt like following him and harrassing him and writing a book bashing him? I bet anyone here would feel the same if it was them.

  27. CKS2103 February 16th, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Pete (or anybody else who knows the answer) – Who brought about the Yankee facial hair rule? When & why was it first enforced?

    ========================================

I agree. Though actually saying “stalked” might not have been the best choice of words. But I can see how he might have felt that way. I would have felt that way most probably

  29. benny blanco February 16th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

I believe George S….enforced the rule

  30. rbj February 16th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

No facial hair has been around a long time. Though from time to time someone gets away with a mustache.

  31. Rosa February 16th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Stalking can be a felony. Arod did use a poor choice of words and did the right thing by apologizing.

He needs to answer all questions truthfully and not discuss it for the rest of the year.

  32. Giuseppe Franco February 16th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Players are allowed mustaches. They’ve always been allowed mustaches.

I like the facial and short hair rule. It’s unique and traditional and it keeps them looking professional instead of a bunch of rag tag punks.

  33. 86w183 February 16th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

I disagree. Clemens would shave after he pitched and then allowed it to grow for five days and looked like a bum, so a “policy” means nothing unless you’re going to really enforce it. Instead just tell the guys who look like slobs to clean up when needed.

Facial hair below the lip does not necessarily mean you look like a “rag tag punk” any more than the absence of it makes you look professional. Look at Mike Lowell and David Wells if you need clarification.
