That overpass above the field is a great place to watch the guys working out. We watched from there last year.

    Hey Pete
Isn’t possible to record videos with the iphone? I know for a lot of us readers a video of a bullpen session would go miles in helping us maintain our sanity. The popping of the glove in one of these sessions would be a welcome audio and would help me get away from A-Rod and back to real baseball.

Great stuff Pete thanks as always.

  3. lowshun February 17th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Pete, Jailbreak your iphone. This will allow you to record motion video. It’s real easy, just google it…

  4. Mark Messier February 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

I am just wondering why is it that its such a bad thing to use roids in baseball but no one seems to care about its rampart use in Football. Even one of Pete’s beloved Patriots is involved in the barry bonds case. New England Patriots linebacker Larry Izzo is gonna testify.

    http://www.projo.com/patriots/.....b3e81.html

“Izzo is expected to be among 38 witnesses for the prosecution, and should he testify, the veteran special-teamer will admit that he received banned substances from Greg Anderson.”

Football players for some reason have stay out of the fray on this issue, but they also get away with murder too(see Ray Lewis).
    Just wondering!

with that camera only mug shots are really gonna be worthwhile. the field shots are just too long range. you should hit up lohud for an upgrade.

  6. BBB February 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Yes, the overpass is a total slice of heaven to watch guys work out/pitchers throw. The year that I went, I had such a good spot I even heard snippets of some of the things Moose was saying to Posada and Guidry after his bullpen. great spot for photos too (if you have a zoom lens that is..haha) I visited a couple of other teams’ facilities during my ST trip and no one else had anything near like that. Legends Field is really top notch.

  7. Al from BK February 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Mere minutes away from the A-Rod PC. I hope he says the right things.

  8. BBB February 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Messier, dont even get me started on the MLB/NFL steroid double standard. total hypocrisy.

  9. m February 17th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

What a sight for sore eyes!

    pat,

I think a captain does his talking in the clubhouse and leads by example outside the clubhouse. His job is to keep the team focused and keep their eyes on the prize.

Jeter’s job is not to mold Alex’s image, curry public sympathy for poor Alex, or run point for any messes. He’s also not the spokesperson for the Yankees.

And he came out earlier and made a statement before A-rod did, “Let’s give Alex the benefit of the doubt.” And no matter what he says or does, the perception/urban myth that he and Alex don’t get along will never be dispelled.

Jeter will be there to show his support and he’ll speak tomorrow. That’s enough for me. Today is Alex’s day.

  10. jennifer February 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

I hate that this has become pinning one teammate against another.

    Pettitte and Alex
    Jeter and Alex

    It is so silly.

  11. smothered with onions February 17th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

it wouldnt shock me if jeter is going to come out in favor of stricter testing tomorrow and thats why he’s having a separate presser.

… or he could say he tested positive.

jen, I don’t think the majority of us are seeing it that way, which is a good thing.

    :)

  13. S.o.S. February 17th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

So i saw Tex on t.v. going into the Yankees locker room. Did anyone else notice he walked in with a Halos bag? With all the money he just made youd think he can grab a Yankees bag before showing up to spring training. Just saying.

  14. Al from BK February 17th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

I’m glad that other Yankees are coming out in favor of Alex. Its shows unity and thats what the team needs now more than ever.

  15. Mark Messier February 17th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

    bbb

It is kinda crazy. The mob with torches is out to get Arod….And today Ray lewis is considered a great guy and teams are lining up to get a shot for Michael Vick…..Shawne Merriman gets suspended for roids and goes to the pro bowl plus nearly wins the MVP. Actually Crazy is not the right words….

  16. smothered with onions February 17th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

they should shoot spitballs at him while hes on camera.

  17. pat February 17th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

    m

I thought it sort of a rhetorical question but thanks.

I was just trying to point out every captain is the one they know how to be not one everyone wants them to be. To me it’s a ceremonial title that only requires the person to always do what is best for the team.

  18. why i dont care February 17th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

how many home runs merrian got?

Why pay for it when you can get it for free when you show up? ;)

    *just curious*

For those of you watching this live, will you go with YES, ESPN, or MLB TV? Which station’s debriefing will you consider most relevant or trustworthy, for lack of better words?

I am inclined to watch it on YES because they are the home base. I would also consider MLB TV. I would be interested to hear responses from ESPN since I am thinking they will be the least “positive” – so if they can find a way to be impressed by what Alex says, that’s actually a good sign. Then again, since Selena is connected with SI, MLB TV responses, especially by Verducci, would also be interesting.

    Just wasting time here.

    :D

  22. why i dont care February 17th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

i think its a rite of spring that the guys all show up with last year’s team’s gearbags, then over the course of a couple of weeks, they dissappear and a new team emerges.

  23. SteveB February 17th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Pete, I have this vision of you as ‘The Stalker’. Peering around corners, hanging just beyond the foul lines……

  24. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 17th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Dang, just tuned in to MLB TV and they are showing the top 9 World Series ever. We are down to the final two, and don’t you think that #2 is the 2001 Worold Series. That sure is number two!

  25. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 17th, 2009 at 12:27 pm

What’s up with #1? 1975 World Series. At least the right “Red” won it! The Reds!

    :)

  26. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 17th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

Top 9 gaffes in baseball if you want to get some steroid relief.

    Knobs is #9…

  27. S.o.S. February 17th, 2009 at 12:33 pm

“Why pay for it when you can get it for free when you show up?”

    Al,
Youd think Scott would have negotiated a bag to be included on top of the lucritive deal earned. I guess the Yankees stood firm and won that battle. Gotta make their money back on their items sold.
    Angels bag it is.

  28. Steve B February 17th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

“What’s up with #1? 1975 World Series. At least the right “Red” won it! The Reds!”

Tremendous series. I would have put it #2 to 1991 though. Never thought I could get such joy out of a series in which I had absolutely no horse in the race (no Yankees, no hated Red Sox or Mets). I can only go as far back as 1970 or so, but 1991 was the best I ever witnessed.

  29. S.o.S. February 17th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

“Top 9 gaffes in baseball if you want to get some steroid relief.

Ball hitting Consecos dome for a homerun has to be #1.

  30. Much Ado about Something February 17th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

I don’t really care what bag Teixeira was carrying, its the uniform and team he is playing for NOW that counts. If he wants to carry an Angels bag in its probably going to be a Yankee bag coming out anyway.

  31. Al from BK February 17th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Anybody know if the PC will be streaming online because I cant get to a TV atm.

“Ball hitting Consecos dome for a homerun has to be #1.”

    :D

It was in the highlights so I have to think it’s in there!

Actually I take that back. They called the highlights “bloopers”. They are considering the gaffes as brainlocks by players or the umps, it seems.

  33. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 17th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Steve, 1991 was in there! I don’t know which one it was.

  34. Steve B February 17th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

“Which station’s debriefing will you consider most relevant or trustworthy, for lack of better words?”

    Relevancy?? All about even

Trustworthy? In the end, it’s going to be people expressing opinions on what they’ve just seen. No such thing as a wrong opinion. YES is certainly the most likely to see life thru pinstriped glasses though.

I never laughed so hard then I did today in the morning w/ the Daily News back cover..the cartoon characters and looking at cartoon Arod I thought they made him that way to show how sensitive he is and seriously didn’t anyone looking at that pic feel like he was going to break into a chorus of …

In that case, how about the white sox player that took his pants down to dust off at first base forgetting he was there and everyone was watching him. Anyone remember who the player was?

The Mets are citing the sour economy and the World Baseball Classic for a noticeable dip in spring-training ticket sales from last year, when they set a club record with more than 98,000 tickets sold.

Club officials said they think sales will pick up in mid-March, when many spring breaks start and snow-bound fans travel more.

As much as we don’t want to have to think about umps missed calls and how much they can change the course of a season/postseason, wow are they right up there.

  42. jennifer February 17th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Which radio station do you guys recommend listening to? ESPN or WFAN? Both hate Arod right now, and I would assume will be interjecting their own thoughts.

It’s like which Mike do you pick. Stupid mean Mike or Stupid mean Mike?

It is a toss up. We’ll hear Mike F babble about Jobr to the pen.

  49. RustyJohn February 17th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

    Football v. baseball and steroids.

The reason for the double standard is the following- baseball is a lot like the America we strive for. We have these ideals we seek to reach and a purity/nostalgia that has the fan revere the game in a sacred manner, much like we revere our founding fathers and the constitution.

Football is as modern America is- full of gawdiness, excess, and no disregard for tradition. Instant replay in football? Who cares- let us change the rules every other year and no one would give a poop. Instant replay in baseball? A sacrilege.

Baseball is George Washington, Apple Pie, and Abe Lincoln. There are horrible things about baseball- such a segregation- and there are horrible things in America- such as segregation- but by in large we want the game, like our country, to be pure and true.

Football is strip malls, SUVs, gawdy jerseys and pop culture. Football is Rod Blagjevich.

Baseball is day to day life. Football is an event, a show, a production. Baseball is David Lean. Football is Jerry Bruckheimer.

That’s why there is the double standard.
