Audio from today: Jeter and Girardi

Peter Abraham
February
18

First up is Derek Jeter, who we talked to while he was in the dugout after the workout today.

I should warn you, all of the questions were about A-Rod, steroids, or A-Rod using steroids. He was supportive of A-Rod but admitted to being disappointed in what he did.

Derek said (again) that he has never done any PEDs and credited his upbringing. Here’s the interview:

Then we have the manager, who talked about Matsui, his lineup, A-Rod and a few other things:

I have some newspaper stories to write. Plus I’m calling every “Rodriguez” in the Miami phone book. Back later.

  1. Hola

“Plus I’m calling every “Rodriguez” in the Miami phone book.”

I hope you have a lot of free time, Pete. :)

  2. Yankee Trader

From the last blog. Pete you bring new posts “fast and furious” Great job!!

I’ve finally come to the conclusion after listening to the media, players, and Cashman, plus XM talk radio and Pete’s most excellent blogs, plus doing research on steroids that:

1.A-Rod knew exactly what he was doing and what was getting injected into him, twice a month for 6 months each year.

    2. That he conveniently forgot that he took testosterone also, to speed up the muscle mass process.

    3. That his cousin, if ever found, could very well be guilty ot trafficking since it was illegal.

    4. That the Yankees now view A-Rod as an “asset” that they hope they get their money’s worth out of.

    5. That the Yankees were not permitting follow up questions from the media yesterday, hoping A-Rod would not dig himself into a deeper hole.

    6. That the players union is definitely to blame along with the players who cheated. I guarentee that a ban from baseball for two years without pay, if proven guilty, would quickly clean up the mess.

As a life long Yankee fan A-Rod, I hope you can somehow help lead the Yankees to many more championships. I also wish there was a way you could have the Yankees amend your contract to not be paid for passing all the home run records, so that you can just play baseball without always trying for the homerun.

And above all, we’ll see how sincere and charitable you are over the next nine years. I support you,and hope you succeed for the good of the team, but I don’t like you.

  3. Drive 4-5

From this point forward I couldnt care less about A Rod, I couldnt care less about Derek Jeter and I couldnt care less about the New York Yankee$.

I just received my Relocation plan for my season tickets. After 5 years of travelling 350 miles round trip on Saturdays, the Yankee$ rewarded my family’s loyaly with a 12 game weekday plan. Our seat moved from Section 2 behind home plate to Section 431 directly behind the left field foul pole.

From this day forward in my house the new ballpark will be referred to as the House That Greed Built. The Yankee$ sold out the little guys to sell luxury boxes. I hope they choke on the money.

  4. Alex

i’m guessing (more like hoping) pete was kidding with that last line about calling every rodriguez. but, rest assured, i guarantee the post and daily news just hired about 15 new staffers to do just that.

  5. Barry Lane

    Yankee Trader:

    What a great post.

  6. dave

I really dont see how it ruins the flow of the convo pete – people who have the time, read it and people that dont skip it. Or they read the first sentence and decide if its interesting or not to them. I dont see how this is a huge problem. And i definitely do not write huge posts every five minutes – i am on here a few hours a day and i write a post as long as the one before maybe once a week if that. I dont understand how if there is 500 comments in one thread, what is the difference if one of them is the size of 10 comments – is that not like just reading a few comments at once? yOU never seemed to care before the whole steroid and the media involvement thing came up except maybe once or twice before. I just dont have the time to start a blog right now or really, i dont have time to do the actually set up. I even try to break my posts up into sections but that just makes them difficult to follow. Its your blog and you make the rules so I will cut them down i guess. However, I am not the only one who writes very long posts at times. im just here more often.

  7. dave

I forgot to say – the first few times you mentioned my posts being too long, I thought you were just joking around with me. I didnt know you actually cared that much. You said it in such a joking way, I just assumed you werent being serious so i didnt really attempt to change. Now, that i know you were serious, i will make more of an effort to cut them down.

How much is Lace and Stilletto paying Lohud ?

  9. kenobrien

the pics rule, petey. keep up the good work.

  10. tim boat

who was the dimwit from Channel 4 asking Jeter all these stupid and obvious type of questions?

    he seriously asked questions like:
“What were you guys trying to convey by showing up to Alex’s press conference yesterday?”
“What’s the mandate for this season?”
and one of my favorites “As a player do you appreciate having owners like the Steinbrenners who are willing to go out and spend money?”

LOL what would he possibly say to that last question “NO! WE HATE THAT”? how stupid are the people in this profession?

  11. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

“What’s the mandate for this season?”
and one of my favorites “As a player do you appreciate having owners like the Steinbrenners who are willing to go out and spend money?”

LOL the worst run-on question a journalist could ask.

  12. Stan

Did anyone other than Scott Clark or Bruce Beck ask any questions?

  13. Peter Abraham

    Dave:

I have received at least five complaints from people asking me to ban you. Your giant mass of copy takes up entire computer screens or several screens for those people who try and read on their phones.

You never use paragraphs, either. It’s just a giant mass of words and that causes people glaze over, Trust me, I’ve read studies on this. This is what I do for a living.

I love that you want to post. I just want you to be concise. Part of my living is based on this blog. If people stop reading it because you’re making it tough to read, I have to do something about it.

You want to write 700 words? Awesome. Make them four 175-word posts and use paragraphs. That’s all I am asking.

  14. Wave Your Hat

I’m confused. I see that some of you have received 12 game weekday plan seat assignments. The web site says partial plans other than 41 game plans have not gone out yet. I know I’m still waiting for my 20 game plan seat selection.

Can anyone explain what is going on?

  15. gayle

Didnt bother to listen to Jeter have heard enough about arod. Thought Girardi was great today and seemed very relaxed.

  16. Giuseppe Franco

Pete’s right about the long posts.

Most people don’t even bother reading them. Too much effort.

  17. feefoo

jeter is such a great talker! almost made me forget how many DPs he hits into!

  18. Drive 4-5

    Wave Your Hat,

I didnt receive any notification either. When I read on the blog that people were getting their plans, I accessed my Yankees Account and saw my invoice. They dont even give you the courtesy of an e-mail, but they want their money in full in 14 days. The Relocation to the House That Greed Built could not have been handled any worse.

My advice is to check your account. Good luck. Let me know how you made out.Hopefully a lot better than me and my family did.

  19. m

For the record, dave, I’m not one of the people who e-mailed Pete.

Keep posting, because you have the right to and hidden in the shrubs is a nice flower or two.

I think condensing your writing would help. Lots more people would read it. I know you’re not going for “hits”, but since you put a lot of thought(s) into your writing, you want maximum exposure. :)

  20. BBB

haha, I know a couple of the Rodriguezes in the Miami phone book, and none of them would tell anyone anything about ARod’s connex even if they did know! :D

ARod is very beloved in Miami and so are the Yankees,.

  21. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

‘jeter is such a great talker! almost made me forget how many DPs he hits into!’

Seriously they asked him some softball questions. Like do you believe in what Alex said and when he said yeh ..what no follow up ? it was a soft interview, there were better questions asked to Cash the other day.

  22. Big V

Man, I can see why Jeter is not interviewed more often. What a Sleeper…….he is probably boring on dates too.

  23. gayle

    Wave–

My recommendation would be to call the relocation office and ask.I believe they are sending them out based on seniority so not sure when you have had your tickets since. And check your my yankees account on yankees.com and it will show up there before you get it in the mail.

  24. gayle

Drive what did you end up with??

  25. Phl Parcells

    T-Mac = ARod

  26. DT

    Pete –
Spend your free time searching for the person who broke the law by leaking sealed court documents! (or if you are lazy -just get Ms. Roberts drunk)

If you are successful – Arod will be your pal and might even take out the earbuds for you.

The trial judge will be your friend, and I’ll take up a blog collection for front row Bruce tiks in Barcelona 4u.

Don’t go looking for the cousin! That’s baaaaaad.
All the other nitwits are doing that. Don’t be a sheep! ;-)

  27. YanksinCA

I have to agree with Pete. When I see someone writing just a mass of words, I skip over it.

Short and sweet…get to the point.

Punctuation and paragraph structure are your friends.

  28. Phl Parcells

They should of asked Jeter about being a tax cheat.

  29. BBB

I would be willing to bet an obscene amount of money that Jeter is not boring on dates.

    Just sayin.

  30. Big V

    A-ROD LIED TO CASHMAN………

That is why Cashman is so pissed at A-ROD. I’m sure the question came up more than once. And I’m sure A-Rod lied to him and management a number of times on this topic.

THis why I think Cashman is so disgusted with A-ROD…..

    No other reason.

A-Rod is a piece of work and what makes him great is his ability to just shake off the bad things and focus on the personal things he wants. Its beyond Egomaniac status….. the guy has a number of other issues probably – intimacy issues on more than one level. That is why he can’t give a straight answer ever. He can’t even get intimate with himself. He may also be a patholigical liar as well since he can’t even be truthful to himself. Let alone anyone else.

His poor ex -wife must have felt like the loneliest woman around. But the victim and the abuser always find each other.

T-Mac can’t stay healthy and hasn’t gotten past the 1st rd., completely horrible comparison.

  33. YankeesLuv

Pete, maybe you should have emailed him and told him this stuff privately?

I dunno personally it’s not big deal for me, if I don’t want to read something I usually skip it. I do wish the posts were numbered so I could remember where I posted. :)

  34. Phl Parcells

    BBB-

    dream on.

    Jeter is overrated.

  35. Tom

Dave, most of the time I do read your posts, however, when you drop a brobdingnagian size post I skip them.

  36. Phl Parcells

    Brandon-

ARod has been in the league for 15 seasons. How many times has been in the Series?

  37. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

BBB AI got to the NBA Finals ..I’d say the closest thing to Alex well I guess would be Stephon Marbury ?

  38. dave

Fine pete – i didnt know people actually complained to you in emails about these things. This is the first I am hearing of it too. I will change – i have never heard you tell me this and sound serious about it before. I actually have been using paragraphs for the most part now however, I did not used to but I have dont it alot more in the last few months, Occasionally, I forget when i AM in some heated conversation but I am usually pretty dilligent with that now. Just look at that last long post I had – it had seven paragraphs. Pretty much two sentences per paragraph. Thats how Ive been trying to post them. If i can do that, I guess i can write shorter posts too… i hope. I dont want to be kicked off. I have been reading this blog for a few years already and posting for at least two years. Its just strange to hear all this after two years but if you need me to make my posts shorter, I can.

  39. Phil

Who was the reporter asking all the stupid question about Girardi having a talk with ARod?

  40. BBB

Brandon – oh lord, bite your tongue! LOL

You could maybe say Vince Carter, but VC is nowhere near as good as AI or ARod…I went for the equal talent comparison over the equal postseason clutchness one….man, it sucks to type that.

  41. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

    ‘Brandon-

ARod has been in the league for 15 seasons. How many times has been in the Series?’

He was 1 out away from the World Series in 04′ and has never bounced back from that. Arod in the league for 15 seasons and most of those seasons w/ a roster not constructed to win a championship, really out of his 15 yrs. probably 5 had a legit chance of winning something. Seattle is not NY in anyway, Texas was a joke. So he had 8-10 seasons of a nonchampionship team, Seattle was not a championship team, they were an offensive juggernaut but in no way championship caliber, Texas was a mickey mouse arcade team.

  42. Joe from Long Island

Drive 4-5 – Does your screen name refer to the drive time to the Stadium?

I am really saddened to hear that happened to you. I really am. My friend handles our ticket package, I’ll call him to ask him to check his account and see where we end up. But what you described stinks.

Dave – far be it for me to tell anyone how to post here. That’s not my place. But, if you really are a medical student, let me give you some advice on writing in your chosen profession – from someone who’s been there and done that – Keep it concise and to the point. And good luck to you.

  43. dave

Just one question, if you can ban people from the blog- why do you not ban people like MYGIRL and some of the other people like that that come around?? I would think their posts are more of a nuisance than mine. At least I put some time and thought into my posts.

  44. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

‘Brandon – oh lord, bite your tongue! LOL

You could maybe say Vince Carter, but VC is nowhere near as good as AI or ARod…I went for the equal talent comparison over the equal postseason clutchness one….man, it sucks to type that.’

That’s a perfect comparison, I never thought of that, Vince Carter, Half Da Man he use to be amazing.

  45. Phl Parcells

    Brandon-

How much does ARod pay you to be his apologist?

  46. Phl Parcells

    Is Hannah Storm good looking?

  47. able 21

  48. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Now batting #6 Alex Rodriguez

How much does ARod pay you to be his apologist?’

Probably as much as teachers paid for your common sense.

  49. Kat

Drive 4-5, Wave your Hat, Gayle:

I checked my account and was extremely disappointed.

I was originally surprised to learn that the 12 Saturdays package was gone but figured, okay, I’ll do the 15 game (12 saturdays and some weekdays).

Well, I just checked my account and was assigned to the 12 weekday package.

Now, the yankees clearly did not take into consideration that i do not live in or close to the city so getting to the stadium on a weeknight is nearly impossible.

And the given seats that were worse than imagined. In my relocation guide, I selected ticket prices that were a little over budget. We got no where near that.

To give you an idea, my TOTAL package for 12 games is one-third the cost of what my TOTAL packahe was last year.

I called the relocation office and asked why this was all happening. They said they made a big push to sell more FULL season plans and he went on and on about how it was so successful and it was going so well, etc etc that they ran out of saturday packages.

If I reject my seats, I can be put in the pool with no guarantee I’d get ANY plan OR I can upgrade to a 20 game plan, with tickets starting at $350 each.

I can’t help but feel incredibly cheated by all this. I don’t have the most seniority as far as plans go, but I definitely have had mine for several years.

This is a sad day for yankees fans.

  50. yankeefan91 Arod fan (sign manny now)

dave i agree 100% why in the world dont they band that person mygirl he or she is so annoyinnnnnnn

  51. Drive 4-5

    Joe from Long Island,

Thanks for the sympathy. I’m sure we’re not alone. The whole idea about the the new balpark was to sell luxury seats. They’ve squeezed a lot of loyal customers right out. Here’s hoping your not one of them.

  52. SJ44

Have we not figured out the difference between “supporter” and “apologist” yet?

Just because someone has a different on idea on making a comparision between certain players, doesn’t make one an “apologist” for anybody.

For the record, the T-Mac and Arod comparisions fall flat because T-Mac has never been considered the best player in the NBA.

Positive test or not, most players consider Arod to be the best all around player in MLB, and have thought so for years.

    Kat,

Word for word your story is the same as mine.We previously had the same plans and recieved the same plans in the House That Greed Built. We have a 350 mile round trip. A weekday plan is not doable. I’m sorry to hear you got stiffed like my family did.

  55. able 21

I was happy to hear that Matsui will be the full time DH. That should keep Johnny Damon in the lineup everday and at the top of the lineup. It should also allow Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady to have significant playing time. I don’t see the need or the wisdom in trading either one of them.

  56. dave

Thanks for the comments guys. I could actually guess a few who would write an email to pete. i will try to condense because i DONT want to be kicked out of here. I have been coming here for three or four years already or something like that. It would be very strange to not be able to come to the site any more.

And i did say a few times if pete himself seriously told me to cut the posts down, I would and obviously, I wasnt lying. Frankly, I just thought people complained before because they didnt like what i said or wanted to get on my nerves for the most part. I figured – if people didnt want to read it, its just as easy to skip it and i dont care how many people read them. I will do everything i can to shorten them down.

  57. DT

    dave –

You have some excellent ideas. You just need to learn how to blog post.

Just think of this blog as one of your future patients. (um… not a cadaver) You wouldn’t give a patient 500 pills at one time would you? Don’t OD on words. Be concise.

You wouldn’t tell someone to take a pill every five minutes either. You’d space them out. Same with words. A line break is your friend.

Just pretend you have to get your thought out clearly (and quickly) because you have another patient in the waiting room.

ps: your 5:59 post was excellent! To the point, clear and concise.

  58. Tom

I guess if wishing A-rod well and rooting for him as a player makes me an “apologist” then so be it.

DT- Thanks for the advice. The 5 59 thought was easy to get across though. Sometimes, what I am driving at is a little more complex an issue. But i understand what you mean by spacing it out. The problem is – i was always the kid in the class that would write 10 pages when the teacher asked for five and I have been writing longs posts here for 2 years. I think need to ease my way into a new style or something.

Thats actually the one thing I did listen to people on.

  76. GreenBeret7

There’s a lot of bad misconceptions about what happened with Brien Taylor. He lives about 40-50 miles from here and was “The Name” back in 1990. His name was right there with Shannon and Sterling Shatpe, who are from Glennville, Georgia, about 25 miles from here. Taylor wasn’t involved in a fight in a bar. It happened away from the bar and he was at home and a cousin came by to say that his older brother had been sucker punched by 2 guys outside of a bar.

To make a long story short, Taylor swung at a guy with a left fist and missed. He tore the labrum in his shoulder. The kid was amazing. He moved his family out of an old trailer and had a house built for his parents. That’s where they all live now. He also bought himself a new Ford Mustang. He’s still driving it. He works as a brick layer, and has custody of his 5 daughters. His career should be winding down now, instead of never starting. He’s the same age as Andy Pettitte. Oh, yeah…his agent was SCOTT BORAS.

Maybe try to keep it three sentences and then have a paragraph break? That might help even more. :)
