Alex Rodriguez had an uneventful first day while Derek Jeter had some strong opinions on the tenor of the times.

Hideki Matsui’s days as an outfielder appear over. This notebook also has information on the likely lineup, Melky’s WBC defection, Damaso Marte and Austin Jackson.

You know, you have to wonder if never taking a day off is worth it. Look at Matsui. He played for how many consecutive games before he broke his wrist? I mean, one part of you says it’s admirable, but the other part looks at his current situation and sees a definite connection.

I think guys need to take their days off. It’s not like when DiMaggio played, and the travel was slower and there were fewer games in a season. And fewer games in the post-season. (Although I admit I have no idea how long or arduous the Japanese baseball season is!)

It’s kind of amazing that the Atlanta Braves have lost out on so many off-season opportunities this year. It’s like they’ve been left at the altar, what, 3 times this winter? I thought Griffey to the Braves was a done deal. Apparently not. :)

Who would pay to see this pay-per-view event – The Three-headed monster of Beantown; featuring the Scarecrow the Ghost and the Buffoon vs. Yammering Hank of Kissimmee Ranch- in an all-out fight to the end death match?

If Canseco and Bonaduce can get $10.95, I think this one would fetch at least $25.95.

Sounds like Austin Jackson has a chance to be a long-term solution in CF? Since it might be a year or two away, is there a better short-term solution out there somewhere other than Gardner or Cabrera? Edmonds?…???

All natural. So I take it Pamela Anderson will not be making an appearance today?

If the MLB is serious about the WBC they have to stop this stuff. Every player who’s on the preliminary WBC roster and decides to skip the WBC should not be allowed to participate in spring training games and should stay two weeks on the DL at the start of the season.

Oh please! Would you rather have Jeter playing games for the Yankees or some stupid made up thing?

AP story running today in our local paper about Pavano being eager to get a new start with the Indians. He’s penciled in at number 3 in their rotation. Good thing it’s not in ink.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he picked the city of the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. They should be running an ad to hire more staff, because he’ll be keeping them very busy.

I know it’s not likely, but barring any rainouts, AND figuring a five-man rotation, AND assuming he’s not on the DL after 12 games, Pavano should be the starter for Cleveland in Yankee Stadium on April 19th.

Jeter, A-Rod and Cano to play in WBC…

What a recipe for disaster. If one — just one — gets hurt, there’s nobody in sight. Have been saying for months lack of credible infield back-up is Achilles heel of this team. Cash obviously not reading my posts.

glad to see Melky thinks competing for a job in center on the yankees is more important than the WBC :)

    Pete –

Did your editors goof up or did you – or did Joe G. answer two different questions in a similar way?

    In the blog –
Then there was this from Joe Girardi when he was asked about Alex’s *character*:
“Well, that’s not an opinion I would necessarily share. I know that Alex wants to improve who he is on a daily basis.”

    In the paper today –
But Rodriguez still has bridges to repair. When asked to assess Rodriguez’s *career*, Girardi paused before answering.

“Well, that’s not an opinion I would necessarily share,” he said. “I know that Alex wants to improve who he is on a daily basis. My job is to get the most out of him as a person and a player.”

Not trying to get picky – just trying to understand context. Give me credit for reading both… lol.
