This team is gonna be fine.

  12. Blindmole February 19th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

This makes me all kinds of happy … I had the good fortune of Meeting Tino at one of the barnes and nobles book signings he is just an awesome person … that isnt as cool as when i met Yogi Berra , but it seemed applicable to talk about.

  13. pat February 19th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

We’ve been good today. Do we get some audio as a reward? Please.

  14. Mark in Tampa February 19th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

    Pete,

What is tomorrow’s schedule as far as workout time, BP time, and what pitchers are throwing?

  15. gayle February 19th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Tomorrow how about some Robbie Cano updates so far the only infielder yet to be seen.

  16. DT February 19th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

    nice title entry –

gotta love any Bruce song that contains a secret message to Robby Cano –

You’re walkin’ tough baby, but you’re walkin’ blind

  17. Boston Dave February 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

This is one of my favorite things to see. I love the old(er)-timers back talking to the younger guys. It reminds you that some of these guys really do love the game of baseball and it’s not all about money.

It also reminds me of how great the Yankee team, tradition, and family is.

  23. Boston Dave February 19th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

The Indians DFA’d Andy Marte makng him a free agent. Wow.

From top prospect with high ceiling to dud. He was top 10 by BA. Reminds you how “top prospect” doesn’t always mean MLB star.

  24. Ceasar February 19th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

    I miss tino

Some things in the world just look “right”. Jeter in a Yankees cap. Tino and Bernie in a Yankees uni.

Some things look really wrong. Donnie Baseball in an LA uni.

  33. Rob Thompson February 19th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

That is the coolest thing I have seen in years. I’m trying really hard to temperate my enthusiasm but it’s very, very hard to do when you see an amazing sight like that.

Tex appears to be intently listening to the advice that Tino is giving him.

    Great, great shot.

  34. Nick in SF February 19th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Eh, most of the posts in the previous thread refer to the thing-that-is-verboten-to-refer-to. It’s all very self-referential. Less like a Springsteen song and more like the Yo La Tengo album “And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out”. But I doubt there are (m)any Yo La Tengo fans in these parts. Maybe because YLT are Mets fans. Boooo.

But baseball talk is good, yes. Good to see Tino again too.

Whoever thought this was from Pete’s camera, this is a picture from the gallery we were looking at earlier.

  37. m February 19th, 2009 at 4:53 pm

The title of the thread led me to believe that this post was about COUSINS.

  38. Peter Abraham February 19th, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I knew you guys would like this photo.

I did not take it, however. Wire services. If it’s a good photo, I didn’t take it.

  39. .o.(keeping my S'S out for today Pete) February 19th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

“we had close to 1,000 comments and the page views were about the same as any other day.”

    So Pete,
Are you saying that we perform just as good without the juice than with it? I hope everyone understands this from now on that we dont need any extra enhancements on this blog. We are good just the way we are. Thanks for a peaceful day Pete.

  40. Uncle Ellsworth February 19th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Pete did you see the pic Dave posted? it was cool.

  41. Betsy February 19th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Pete, that is a FANTASTIC picture – Tex and Tino actually resemble each other a little bit. I’m just grinning from ear to ear right now – I can’t believe Tex is ours, lol. I’m so giddy about this team – is this what it’s like to be drunk?

Great, our first injury. I’m being mostly facetious, but here it goes again. We’re not even a week into camp and already Marte has bad hamstrings? With the injury bug we’ve had the last couple of years, any injury worries me.

I’m not suprised about Alex – he’s likely internalizing everything while putting on a big, happy face for the world to see. Inside, this has to be eating at him.

Pete, this was a really great idea – I understand you have a job to do, but I guess you can see how much people really miss talking baseball.

  42. john February 19th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Great work today Pete. Thanks for making the work day go by that much quicker. Tex looks great in Pinstrips

  43. Chris February 19th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Great photo. Really nice. When Tino came to the Yanks, he was 28, Tex is 29. It will be nice to have a defensive minded 1b again who can hit.

Pete – have you talked to Tino about whether he sees himself possibly being a full time coach or manager down the line?

  44. Sal Cipriano February 19th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

That photo makes me feel really good. Tino approved!

  48. AI February 19th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

Not worried about Marte, we have Phil Coke, who is a stud.

  49. tom February 19th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

If the Braves get desperate they may offer us Jordan Schafer for Swisher

  50. Nick in SF February 19th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Nice, saucY. As far as I know, “Moby Octopad” is the only song ever to refer to Butch Huskey. I’m glad I finally got to see them do it live in their 2000 ‘sit down’ tour.

Nice title for a Mets fan blog.

  51. m February 19th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

    Pete,

Do you know what the (new) plans for Phil Coke are?

  52. Y26 February 19th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

I predict that Tex will eclipse Mussina as the best free agent signing (value over duration of contract) of all-time.

  53. m February 19th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

    .O.,

Just saw that Ginoooobli’s out for 3 weeks. What happened? And how do you feel about the Spurs not making any moves?

  54. Clare February 19th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

    Bob(the original)

Thanks so much for the link. That was a great article.

  55. saucY February 19th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

i haven’t heard much YLT, but from what i’ve heard on the radio, it’s music i could see myself getting into…

  56. DT February 19th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

New Coke Plans? I hope they don’t involve Max Headroom.

  57. Yanks 1927 February 19th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

    tom,

It is curious that Cashman is still fielding calls for Swisher… it appears that he does have a price in which he can be had.

I hope they don’t trade him… he fits this team like a glove.

  58. rodg12 February 19th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

    m -
Ginobli’s out three weeks? Where’d you see that?

  59. Al from BK February 19th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Oh look its the passing of the torch, after all Tino was technically our last “real” 1st baseman(now offense Big G).

Eva Longoria in a Yankee cap – and nothing else – has that “right” kinda look to me.

Maybe someday we can get Evan in full uni though. That would suffice in a pinch I guess.

If you are looking for a lot of good pics go to the Yankees Yahoo Sports page. They have a lot of good ones including the full uniform head shots for some.

saucY, I’d be happy to send you some mp3′s if you’d like to sample them. They have a very diverse collection of songs and sounds, but they generally fall safely within the indie rock genre. If you go to my flickr photo page, linked above, you will notice a flickr screen name. If you put that name in front of @yahoo.com, you can contact me if you’re interested.

    m,
I dont know what the difference is between Mcgrady and Manu anymore. First things first, he should have never played in the olympics knowing hes hurt. I am very frustrated today that we didnt make a single move even though we are on a 2 game skid and have holes. Rumors were we were going after Carter. Didnt happen. I hope they know what theyr doing, because for the first time in many years. They needed to make a trade and decided not too. Maybe its time for me to file for free agency. Being a Yankee fan as well makes you expect holes to be filled not ignored. Oh well. Lakers have a cake walk in the west if they stay healthy.

  68. m February 19th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

    Chris,

We got on dave as a joke, but in fairness we should get on you, too.

You might want to try tinyurl.com for the longer links.

  69. AJ YANKS February 19th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Seems like its kind of a waste to have Coke as a starter. He is going to be 27 and he’s already behind Hughes and Aceves on the depth chart (and probably Kennedy too if he keeps putting up his video game AAA numbers).

We have all 5 starters locked in and next year, Hughes will presumably take Andy’s spot. Where will the opportunity for Coke to start come from without substantial injuries? I suppose he could be trade bait, but a guy in his late 20s isin’t going to fetch you much, especially when he won’t be able to show his stuff at the MLB level as a starter with us first.

The best use of him will be in the bullpen, where he could do multiple things– 7th inning, 8th inning, lefty specialist, etc. and could actually help the MLB team.

  70. Victor the Predictor February 19th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Mark Teixiera will prove to be the best 1st base situation since the championship days of Tino.
They have similar mindsets about their approaches to the game.

  71. rodg12 February 19th, 2009 at 5:26 pm

    m -
Weird diagnosis, that’s for sure. Definitely hurts the Spurs while he’s out. Looks like we play them 3/12. He’ll either be out for that game or just coming back and (hopefully) rusty.

  72. vtred February 19th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

AJ’s mugshot looks NOTHING like him. It looks like a Mike Timlin/Bronson Arroyo hybrid.

  73. m February 19th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

    .O.,

Oh, Stephen A. Smith was all over that one. Said if you guys got Vince, you were guaranteed to get out of the west.

A lot of these moves (with the exception of Alston to Magic) seem to be made for the sake of making a move. But there were some huge names out there. Amare, Carter, & Shaq. All difference makers.

  74. Phil February 19th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Reggie was a pretty good free agent pick up.

  75. Chris February 19th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

    No I’m good.

  76. m February 19th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Oops. Forget I said anything, Chris.

  77. Nick in SF February 19th, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Uncle Ellsworth: How about the entire musical “Damn Yankees”?

The difference with those two Mets songs is that YLT really are serious Mets fans and baseball fans in general, whereas B&S was just riffing off of that famous NY Post headline in which Piazza said “I’m not gay”.

I once had a chat with Stevie Jackson of B&S at an SF Giants game. It was the first game after 9/11 in 2001. B&S had played two great shows in SF around Sept. 7/8, their first west coast appearances ever. Then I think they went up to the northwest.

I guess some of them came back to SF a few days later, or at least Stevie did. I recognized him immediately as I saw him walking to his seats in the upper deck; he was with some members of a local indie band called the Aislers Set. I met him a few innings later on the beer line and struck up a conversation. He’s not much of a sports fan but he reported that Stuarch Murdoch is. He was very genial and posed with me for a photo, which I needed to make my gf jealous, as she was a huge B&S fan.

  78. saucY February 19th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

    m,
I think the bulls helped themselves out with the trade. Not enough to be title contenders but a good upgrade in Salmons.

  80. BBB wants to stick to baseball February 19th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Uncle Ellsworth – We Didn’t Start The Fire(Joe DiMaggio) and numerous rap songs. There’s a few lines in some song that frown upon Yankee fans booing ARod, and allude to a double standard with him and Jeter…I wish I could remember who it was by. I want to say Joe Budden but I could be way off. Memory kinda fuzzy, can anyone help? So thats Mets 2, Yankees 3!

Nick in SF – I guess you can count me as half a Yo La Tengo fan. Any friend of Sonic Youth’s is a friend of mine. Here’s to hoping Thurston prefers the Yankees! :)

  81. Andrew February 19th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

    Nick in SF–

Just for what it’s worth, saw Belle and Sebastian when they played at Keyspan Park in ’05 and the singer Stuart was wearing a Mets shirt and talking as though he was a legit fan which really confused me at the time. Then I remember reading in Spin about how he is a straight-up Mets fan as well as a big sports fan in general, to echo what you posted already.

Also, you are not alone on the blog in terms of your musical tastes. I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One = an all-time classic for me, and it amazes me that that band can still bring it after all these years.

  82. Nick in SF February 19th, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Andrew: cool, I am right there with you on that record and them in general. I’ve had the good fortune to see them lots and lots of times, both in SF and NY and Hoboken and also is far-away places like Belfast, Dublin, London, Glasgow, Amsterdam, and Italy. No two shows have ever been the same.

And you’re right about Stuart, I think he did adopt the Mets as his US baseball team.

BBB: I think I remember talking about the YLT/SY connection with you before. They’re definitely simpatico.

  83. EricNS February 19th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

  84. Michelle B. (X is the new black) February 19th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

    M,

a stress reaction is a stress fracture for all intents and purposes. Its a blemish that shows up on a bone scan that looks like broken down calcified bone. Prognosis usually 3 weeks of non weight bearing activities but it usually takes longer to fell better and heal completely. Stress reactions usually occur from constant pounding on hard surfaces.

  85. saucY February 19th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

didn’t blonde redhead start out as a sonic youth tribute band?

I miss Tino. I remember a few years ago when Tino was a Cardinal. The cardinals and yanks were playing at Yankee stadium. Tino got a standing ovation from the Yankee fans. (we always loved him). He hit a home run off our pitcher (I can’t remember who it was) and the Yankee fans gave him a standing ovation. It was great!
