Here it comes

I’m standing a few feet behind P. J. Pilittere (and a fence) as Andrew Brackman throws.

It looks like he’s right on top of you. His breaking stuff is tight.

    2010 rotation?

    CC
    AJ
    Joba
    Wang
    Brackman or Hughes??

  2. sunny615 February 20th, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Guess I’m rushing things a bit – Brackman probably won’t see daylight until 2011 – which leaves Wang on the hook since he’ll be a free agent by then right? Interesting dilemma.

  3. YankCrank20 February 20th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

If Hughes or Kennedy make significant progress, I wouldn’t be surprised if we traded Wang

  4. Andrew February 20th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Will be really interesting to follow Brackman’s progress in 2009. 2010 for the big league rotation is way too ambitious–the guy hasn’t pitched enough in college or the pros to be ML ready after only 1 year in the minors.

If you want to try and work him into the bullpen at some point in 2010 like they did with Joba (if he has a successful full 2009 and starts off strong at AA or AAA in 2010), that might make more sense. It seems like Cashman’s plan is for the 2010 rotation to be:

    CC
    AJ
    Wang
    Joba
    Hughes

  5. NK Yank February 20th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

    Joba
    Wang
    Hughes
    Kennedy
    Brackman

    2010 staff

I would. Wang is a proven winner. Those guys are a huge “maybe”.

    “Joba
    Wang
    Hughes
    Kennedy
    Brackman

    2010 staff”

Um. I guess you forgot the Yankees are paying CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett nearly $20 million a piece during the 2010 season?

  9. The Riddler February 20th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

You’re also forgetting that Brackman likely will not even sniff the majors until 2011.

  10. Frontier February 20th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

Why would you trade Wang, a 2-time 19 game winner to accommodate Hughes or Kennedy, who have proven nothing?

When you find a pitcher who can be successful in NY, you hang onto him, not get rid of him.

  11. m February 20th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Brackman will be seen sooner, rather than later. He signed a major league contract. The clock is ticking.

  12. Russell NY February 20th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

With all of the Yankee depth I don’t honestly think the Yankees are projecting the 2010 rotation right now. Gotta see how that plays out.

  13. JohnC February 20th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Brackman will start in Tampa this season, but if all goes well, he could be a fast riser in the organization. Still, best case would be a late season look in 2010, if all goes well. Same for Jeremy Bleich. Hoping Betances keeps improving and can rise 1 level at a time, getting a full year at each level since he is still pretty raw.

  14. CountryClub February 20th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Wang is 29 this year and has a history of injuries. I get the feeling that the Yanks will keep him until he’s no longer under their control. I dont see a long term contract in his future. If I’m correct, I’m not sure I agree with it. But I think how some of the younger pitchers come along in the next couple of years could play a big part.

  15. eric February 20th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Why would we trade Wang? Foolishness.

  16. Steve B February 20th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Hard to believe Brackman will be anywhere close. He’s thrown less than 200 innings since 2005 according to a post from Pete a few days back. It will take some time to build himself up to the level of a 180-200 IP starter. Sounds like he needs some time to regain his control as well.

  17. Andrew February 20th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

In college Brackman only pitched in something like 30 games total as a reliever and starter, as well as a stint in the Cape Cod League. This winter was his first action professionally…to say he’ll be ready in 2010 is extremely presumptuous, regardless of his talent.

That said the major league contract isn’t pushing the Yankees to rush him, considering they have options that place him under the team’s control through 2013. I wouldn’t think that would make it a necessity for him to be in the majors by 2010.

I agree with YankCrank20. If the Yankees develop another pitcher or two who they think can come close to replicating Wang’s innings, he’s a very valuable trade chip because he’s still salary controlled for a few more years. Beyond pitching and AJax, the Yankees minor leagues are barren of major league ready prospects. A guy like Wang would command a blue chip prospect or two.

“Why would we trade Wang? Foolishness.”

let’s step back from the ledge and ask ourselves this logical question:

“WHAT WOULD BE COMING BACK IN THIS TRADE??”

isn’t saying ANY player should never be traded without knowing what is the other half of the trade kindof, i don’t know, “foolish”?

would you trade Wang for Grady Sizemore right now? i would.

the Indians wouldn’t, but that is why you can’t simply say “never” trade anyone.

  21. klem February 20th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Why trade Wang? Because Wang is not an ACE…nuff said.

    LOL

  22. 56Bomber February 20th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

So Brackman tosses a few good breaking pitches in ST and the trade Wang talk starts. Wow.

  23. Steve B February 20th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Can’t see anyway they trade Wang this year. They need his 200 with Joba innings-capped and Burnett a less than 50/50 prop for 200.

    Maybe next year though.

    Interesting numbers on Wang

vs AL East team he’s 20-12 with a 4.39 ERA for his career

    vs everyone else he’s 34-8 with a 3.32 ERA

He’s no Halladay, but he’d probably have pretty good value, especially for a good defensive club outside the AL East.

If they make SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS, that is reach or approach Wang’s level (from my POV), I don’t think many fans would be surprised. That is a lot to ask of those kids though.

  25. MattNC February 20th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Wang is 54-20 (.730) as a Yankee. He’s about to turn 29. I’d be very reluctant to trade him. And if Joe Torre had used him properly in the playoffs (pitched him in YS, where Wang excels, instead of on the road) we all might have a different opinion about Wang’s value, and the Yankees may have won a few more playoff series in recent years.

  26. JP February 20th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

    Hey Pete!

Maybe that would have been something to take a picture of?

    Just sayin’

“Can’t see anyway they trade Wang this year.”

You’re really going out on a ledge with that prediction. (sarcasm)

  28. Steve February 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Betances is just as big, has good delivery, and got his control problems settled last year. I want to see the B&B (brackman and betances) boys on the hill in 2011

  29. DominicanYank February 20th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Why consider trading Wang at all? He’s been one of the most consistent pitcher the last few years.

  30. Brad February 20th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

If anybody is expendable as part of a package for a needed position player it’s Kennedy. With Betances, Brackman, Garcia, De La Rosa, and McAllister there’s no lack of good arms on the way with more behind them.

  31. Steve February 20th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

But what are you going to get for Kennedy right now? Until he is able to prove that he is more than 4A materiel, and unless he is packaged with other prospects, his return is minimal.

Why you go aroun takin pics of dem? That a little stakerish. You gots a mancrush?
