Here’s the problem with that argument. Bench players may be bench players but they do want to play on occasion.

An established veteran is going to take one look at the roster and see the names A-Rod, Texixeira, Jeter, and Cano and realize quickly that he’s not going to see the field very much at all.

That Yankee foursome doesn’t miss many games and playing time is indeed a factor for established role players looking for a team.

I mean, we have Angel Berroa and Ransom on the bench when guys like Nomar, Aurillia, Gruz, Durham etc. were out there all winter (and 3 of them are still available)? What harm does a minor league deal do? Chances are, some of these vets will want a chance to win a ring and will sign with us. We should take advantage of the Yankee aura and try and get these good bench players to sign with us.
