Nevermind that, if there was one person to blame for the Yankees not winning 2 additional WS, it would be Mariano for his blown saves in '01 and '04. Maybe he channeled his inner-A-Rod and decided he was going to pitch in am "image-concious" manner instead of his usual "anything-for-the-win" mode. I guess he cared too much about his career post-season stats, and thus blew the saves.

I think some guys play baseball to win and the money is a great product of that. Other guys play baseball as an avenue to make money and if they win, well that is great. I think the success Derek, Jorge and Mo have had is a product of their mindset to some degree

When the Yankees were in third place last summer, Alex asked the PR guys on the team why none of us had asked him about signing with William Morris. That, he thought, should have been a story. We all passed.

------------

Pete:

What are you going to say when Jeter won't move from SS and demands another 100 million dollar contract? Are you going to call him a hypocrit? A grandstander? A selfish media-whore? Or are you going to say "well, he won 4 championships so it doesn't matter."

You've been drinking the Joe Torre Kool-Aid from the Yankee years. "We need people who don't care about stats like Jeter, Mo, Jorge! All they care about is winning! People who care about their image and stats like A-Rod, Giambi, and others are horrible human beings and can't win a baseball game!"

I wonder if Coke will caddy for Joba. Joba pitches 5-6 innings. Coke pitches 2-3. Would be great for a lefty to follow a righty with that type of rotation.

murphy

I wasn't equating the "crime" involved but interestingly both Jeter and A-Rod's need for attorneys were initiated by a government agency involving taxes. One Federal, one state. It's always about money somehow.

Getting legal representation to me is not equal to hiring a PR firm. Guilty or innocent, if something could possibly impact your freedom or fortune, you surround yourself with the best people you can have access to. Perception be darned.

"This is not unusual. Alex clearly has a problem handling the media and this is what he chooses to do. Get over it."

Agreed. Obviously Alex can hire whoever he wants.

The decision whether to hire an attorney(s) at this stage of the "inquiry" is always a tough one becasue if you do, you can look guilty just for protecting yourself. But when the stakes are high enough, you take that risk and hire the attorney because the preception, while bad enough, is nothing compared to actually being arrested and/or indicted.

Seriously, you don't strap on talent like that unless you think (fear) there might be some potential criminal exposure. At the very least he wants to avoid an invitation to come to Congress.

Thus, the present A-Rod drama is several orders of magnitude worse than just a problem handling the media.

Pete,

Are you saying ARod plays for the money and not to win?

If you believe it, just write it.
