Darren Rovell, who writes the Sports Biz blog for CNBC.com, has an interesting item on a ball signed by Mickey Mantle that is now for sale.

You might want to boot the kids into the other room.

first! haha kidding. Is that mantles handwriting?

  2. Kevin

It looks like other Mantle autographs I’ve seen, and am I going to hell for thinking that’s hilarious?

  3. 86w183

Sure looks legit to me. If I had the money to waste I would buy it and take it to Yogi and see if he’d F you too Mick!

  4. Patrick

“am I going to hell for thinking that’s hilarious?”

    No because it IS hilarious.

  5. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

    LOL. Potty-mouth autograph

  6. ohgodno

    Seriously hilarious indeed.

  7. vinny-b

better yet, maybe Yogi will put it in his museum.

  8. m

That’s pretty funny. Why would he write such a thing?

At least he didn’t write, “Thank you for having the courage to elect such an….elegant president.”

  9. jennifer

    Poor Yogi. :-(

  10. joe ghirardelli

i want the f(%k mickey ball with yogi’s signature.

  11. Al from BK(waiting for opening day!)

Gotta love the Mick. Wonder what Yogi thinks? :)

  12. joe ghirardelli

thats an advantage to outliving your teammates, yogi can sign a barrelfull of them (^)% mickey…

  13. GreenBeret7

There’s a lot of Mantle “autographs” floating around on pictures and team balls that one of the clubhouse guys would sign. Mantle would have a signature signing contest and then pay a clubbie or a rookie with the best “Mantle signature” to sign his quota of stuff.

  14. joe ghirardelli

gb, say it aint so! the commerce commet?! im crushed!

  15. will

I meant is the fuXXXck yogi legit. Or did someone else write it? never know

had checked the MLB channel’s NYY segment today.

    the all-time lineup, they composed:

Mel Stottlemeyer over Whitey Ford ??

I did like the fact Rickey Henderson was ticketed for LF (leadoff). And one, suggested Nettles should be at 3rd base (not Arod)

  17. hard charging rookie

other teams can pick guys without rings, not us.

Berra would laugh at seeing that. Every team mate of Mantle’s (except Joe DiMaggio) loved being around him becuse of the dirty stories and pranks he would pull.

Berra had a habit of mooching anything and everything from roll-on deoderant to toothpaste.

Ford had a deoderant bottle that he kept on the bench when he was having circulation troubles in his left arm. The bottle was mixed with pine tar and stuff that Ford would use to get a grip on the ball with…very sticky stuff. Berra saw it in Ford’s locker and used it. Ford said everyone in the clubhouse was rolling on the floor as the trainers cut the hair under Berra’s arms to get him loose. Mantle injected some “White Hot” into a tube of toothpaste, just for Berra.

Ford was the #1 ace to start, and the other three rounded out the 4 man rotation.

  20. butcher boy

    man,somebody owes whitey an apology.

  21. Bronx Baseball Daily

That’s great. Reminds me of Shelley Duncan signing that thing for that kid who was a red sox fan. Red Sox Suck – Shelley Duncan.

  22. JR

Ink has stayed remarkably bright and clear after all this time. That looks just like all the other Mantle autographs I’ve seen.

Maris once signed a ball with an X as a gag, but the kid he signed it for ran away without looking at it and Maris never had a chance to rectify it. Somewhere in this world is a ball with Roger Maris’ X

  23. Guy Incognito

GreenBeret, I remember in Jim Bouton’s book that he said that Pete Previte, the clubbie, would sign a LOT of Mantle’s autographs. This is probably the real deal, though.

And Yogi probably would laugh. There are a couple of Yogi-behaving-badly anecdotes in Ball Four as well.

    GreenBeret7 and vinny-b:

I also saw MLB’s Greatest NYY lineup segment last night. Although the selection of Ricky H is a little controversial, putting Joe Dimaggio as “The DH” is totally inaccurate, as he was the best defensive outfielder of all those Yankees elected to the all-time lineup.

The Mantle autographed baseball was quite amusing. The Mick was my boyhood idol and I’ve read much about him. He was a practical joker and, as we all know, liked to “taste a few” in his day. Deron Johnson only played with the NYY for 2 seasons – 60-61 so its a good bet the baseball was signed then unless at a later BB Card show – Deron died in 1992). I would not be surprised if Berra was standing next to Mick when the autograph was given!

  25. KO

I want it. That is classic.

yea man. pretty nice article. keep updating!
