GreenBeret7 and vinny-b:

I also saw MLB's Greatest NYY lineup segment last night. Although the selection of Ricky H is a little controversial, putting Joe Dimaggio as "The DH" is totally inaccurate, as he was the best defensive outfielder of all those Yankees elected to the all-time lineup.

The Mantle autographed baseball was quite amusing. The Mick was my boyhood idol and I've read much about him. He was a practical joker and, as we all know, liked to "taste a few" in his day. Deron Johnson only played with the NYY for 2 seasons - 60-61 so its a good bet the baseball was signed then unless at a later BB Card show - Deron died in 1992). I would not be surprised if Berra was standing next to Mick when the autograph was given!

GreenBeret, I remember in Jim Bouton's book that he said that Pete Previte, the clubbie, would sign a LOT of Mantle's autographs. This is probably the real deal, though.

And Yogi probably would laugh. There are a couple of Yogi-behaving-badly anecdotes in Ball Four as well.

Ink has stayed remarkably bright and clear after all this time. That looks just like all the other Mantle autographs I've seen.

Maris once signed a ball with an X as a gag, but the kid he signed it for ran away without looking at it and Maris never had a chance to rectify it. Somewhere in this world is a ball with Roger Maris' X

That's great. Reminds me of Shelley Duncan signing that thing for that kid who was a red sox fan. Red Sox Suck - Shelley Duncan.

vinny-b
February 23rd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
had checked the MLB channel’s NYY segment today.

the all-time lineup, they composed:

Mel Stottlemeyer over Whitey Ford ??

I did like the fact Rickey Henderson was ticketed for LF (leadoff). And one, suggested Nettles should be at 3rd base (not Arod)

------------------------------------------------------------

Ford was the #1 ace to start, and the other three rounded out the 4 man rotation.

Al from BK(waiting for opening day!)
February 23rd, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Gotta love the Mick. Wonder what Yogi thinks?

------------------------------------------------------------

Berra would laugh at seeing that. Every team mate of Mantle's (except Joe DiMaggio) loved being around him becuse of the dirty stories and pranks he would pull.

Berra had a habit of mooching anything and everything from roll-on deoderant to toothpaste.

Ford had a deoderant bottle that he kept on the bench when he was having circulation troubles in his left arm. The bottle was mixed with pine tar and stuff that Ford would use to get a grip on the ball with...very sticky stuff. Berra saw it in Ford's locker and used it. Ford said everyone in the clubhouse was rolling on the floor as the trainers cut the hair under Berra's arms to get him loose. Mantle injected some "White Hot" into a tube of toothpaste, just for Berra.
