Rodriguez readies for the worst

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 24, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We just spoke to Alex Rodriguez about playing in tomorrow’s game against the Blue Jays in Dunedin. He said he was prepared for the worst in terms of the fans.

“I’ve had a lot of practice the last eight years,” he said. “Just hopefully get three good at-bats, gets some good running in and go home and have a nice dinner.”

When asked about the upcoming meeting with MLB investigators regarding his use of PEDs, Rodriguez said he didn’t know when it.

“I have no idea,” he said. “I’ve heard the same thing you guys have heard. Probably you guys have heard more. … I’m not sure. I’m just waiting to hear from somebody. Maybe Jean. I’m not sure.”

We weren’t sure whether he meant MLBPA official Gene Orza or Yankees assistant general manager Jean Afterman. A couple of reporters stopped Rodriguez on his way out to ask who he was referring to.

“I don’t know,” he said.

How did he spell it Jean? or Gene?

  6. Old(handsome, charming and elegant)YanksFan February 24th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Has anyone thought to ask ARod what his underwear size is?
I’m sure the press can come up with many more meaningful questions.

  7. Tl1125 February 24th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Yeah people, let’s just hang A-Rod that stupid liar.

is this game going to be on YES?

  13. Old(handsome, charming and elegant)YanksFan February 24th, 2009 at 2:56 pm

    ———– XMan Swish
URZ RF: -1.4 9.4 —> Swish 10.8 better then Nady
URZ CF: -46 -10.4 —–> SSS, but you get the idea
URZ LF: 2.1 4.6 ——–> Edge to Swish
    OPS–: .793 .805 ——- Swish by 0.12 (howerever by .060 against RHP)
    wOBA-:.342 .347 ——-> Edge to Swisher
    HR/500 19.5 24.5 —-> Swish is 24% better
SB/500 3.6 2 ——–> Nady actually runs bases better then Swish
    CS% 0.67 0.46

And these Offensive stats come after Nady’s best year, and Swisher’s worst. Seems to me, aside from running, Swisher is the superior player in all aspects, and is a serious upgrade over Nady against RHP.

Swisher should be our FULL Time RFer.
XMan can play RF when Swisher rests (25 gms), can DH when Matsui rests (25 gms), can play LF when JD rests (30 gms), and can play LF when JD plays CF (25 gms).

Plus (barring a trade), Swish is with us for 3 years while Nady might be gone after 2009. The Yanks shouldn’t jerk Swish around, but give him ‘Yankee RFer’ status. Even with my plan above, XMan plays in over 100 gms… and more of course, if there are injuries.

Swish is a better player on O, much better on D, has more power (especially in YS when he bats LHed 70% of games), is 2 years younger and is with us for a while. I hope Girardi doesn’t try to give these 2 ‘equal’ playing time

  14. Frontline February 24th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I see the guy hasn’t learned anything from the past 2 weeks

  15. Jeremy K -- Can't wait for April February 24th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Being a bit rough, don’t you think?

  16. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 24th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Now that Garrett Anderson is with ATL, I think that puts to rest the notion that we are trading Nady or Swisher. We should keep both of them so that we have depth off the bench.

  17. ZMAN7777 February 24th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

    “Rodriguez readies for the worst”

No, Pete, it’s going to get far worse in a few weeks. It will get worse still if the genius keeps talking.

  18. yankeefan91 Arod fan February 24th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

    chris

no there gonna televised thursday game and saturday

  19. Providence February 24th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

Maybe he meant the late Gene Upshaw, in the hopes that the NFLPA would do better by him then the MLBPA?

Perhaps he’s hoping for some news from old Yankees trainer Gene Monahan?

Or, does he think Gene Simmons is going to send him a subliminal message in a KISS song?

Most likely, though, Alex was giving you guys a real scoop: He’s been sneaking behind Phil Jackson’s back trying to land a date with Jeanie Buss, and is waiting to hear back from her.

Definitely one of these, don’t you think?

  20. Chien-Ming Vase February 24th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

i think they are just saying nady is the starter b/c he finished there last year and swisher is the new guy.

if they both hit the way i expect, i think swisher is going to get alot more play than nady.

  21. five iron from fenway February 24th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Dennis – Thanks for the info about the tv package.
Any idea where those of us in Boston can see the game – internet, etc.

I’m thinking he was referring to Mean *Gene Okerlund*

    Sheesh. What a clown.

  24. Tex's New Best Friend February 24th, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Ridiculous. If he doesn’t answer, people whine and cry… If he does answer, people call him a liar. Do you know when he is meeting with MLB? Maybe they didnt tell him when they were coming. Maybe he is just wising up to answering any questions related to the topic because people turn it all around.

How bout you wait until he meets with baseball before you start attacking him about it again.

  25. Tex's New Best Friend February 24th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

    Gene Okerland is awesome!

Whatcha gonna do brother… when Gene and A-Rod run wild on YOU!?!

  26. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) February 24th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

LMAO i see the headline now, “A-ROID expects heads up from Gene, won’t be the first time.” :)

  27. Chien-Ming Vase February 24th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

    nobody’s whining and crying….just chuckling maybe….

  28. BD February 24th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Swisher has somewhat better career numbers, but he had a very bad 2008, statistically. I think it’s generally understood among players that when you have a bad year, you have to prove yourself all over again. By the same token, it would be seen as unfair for a guy who has a terrific year, like Nady, to suddenly be demoted to the bench.

Not only that, but if your eventual plan is to dump XN and keep Swisher, it only makes sense to give him the starting job. A starter is going to command more on the trade market.

  29. darkmoonfire February 24th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

    BD -

I wouldn’t have said that Nady had a terrific year last year. He was ok. I’d attribute some of that to moving league. Since he’s in a contract year, he may well be much better this year.

Let’s see what ST brings. Swisher has a lot to prove too, and I think he will. He does hit better than Nady when he’s on form.

  30. Kevin February 24th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

There’s also the fact that Swisher was flukishly unlucky, while Nady screams “regression to the mean.” The job should be Nick’s to lose, not X-man’s.

  31. Patrick February 24th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Haha its pretty clear that A-rod is sick of answering so many questions. I don’t blame him, I’d rather read about/watch baseball just like I’m sure he’d rather play.

  32. James February 24th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

pretty obvious he’s just trying to blow off these questions. These little things are more a testament that he no longer cares to answer, or how he answers, these small insignificant queries. Kind of his version of “take a hint” I’d imagine.

  33. 86w183 February 24th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

I’m thinking Gene Rayburn. They could play the Match Game together. I can hear the first round…

The star player ruined his reputation by admitting he shot (blank) into his butt……

As for RF, I think Swisher will get about 2/3 of the starts there with Nady getting about 50 or so. I also see him starting as the DH about the same and another 20-25 in LF.

The Yanks have six guys for four regular jobs. Assuming the loser of the Melky/Gardner battle gets the fewest number of starts… say 40-50 that leaves the other five to average about 120-125 between them.

  34. rbj February 24th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

So why hasn’t MLB set up an interview time for him? He’s admitted PED use, MLB wants to talk to him, and then ___? They don’t contact him for a convenient time? I’m sure he’ll want his lawyer + agent + maybe MLBPA rep there as well. It takes a while get everyone in the room or negotiate who all will be there. Need to get the ball rolling.

Dragging this on tells me more about the incompetence of Clueless Bud’s administration than anything else.

  35. Glenn February 24th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

A-Rod is in trouble whether he talks or keeps his mouth shut. As long as he has his game face on when the umpire hollers “play ball” is all that anybody really cares about.

  36. Lara08 February 24th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

I don’t know the tone and reading is not the same as being there but I do love the right amount of snarky. So whether he meant it to be or not, thats how I read it. And it cracked me up.

I wonder if he has snarky in him.

  37. Felix February 24th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

    “I don’t know,” he said.
Hey we should be excited. Its probably the first time he’s been honest lately…
    Good for u Alex

  38. Don February 24th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

A lot worse is coming for A-rod.

  39. The Interpreter™ February 24th, 2009 at 5:50 pm

He meant he didn’t know if it would be Jean or Gene.

  40. Tantron Willoughby February 24th, 2009 at 6:34 pm

Don’t worry Arod is a victim in all of this..poor little Aroid. Maybe he can let roll a silver tear down his swollen steroid filled cheek. Oops thats the other cheek lololololololollol.

  41. Tantron Willoughby February 24th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

I wonder when Arod is going to write his autobiography. You know it’s coming in the next year. The rule of publicity is in effect here. Boras will make him do it.

  42. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 24th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

    “lololololololollol.”

    OMG!!111!! U gotz HSM skilzzzzzz!!111!!!

    /end channeling a 14 year old.

  43. Jeff February 24th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Cashman was right all along. We never should’ve taken him back the second he opted out.

Could’ve used that money to improve other areas of the team- rotation, bullpen, outfield.

  44. YankeeDiva February 24th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Does it really matter if he meant Jean or Gene? Or is just something else for people to b*tch about? I have no doubt that we’ll all know before he does when MLB plans to meet with him.

  45. David February 24th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

What sort of elaboration were you looking for? What difference could it possibly make which Jean/Gene? “I don’t know, I’m not sure, I don’t know.” You got your answer: he doesn’t know. You’re really starting to grasp at ways to bash A-Rod. Would the “Big G” have answered better?

I even heard people bashing him now for wearing his socks high! Get over it press!! The rest of us have!

  46. Peter Abraham February 24th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

    David:

Gene Orza is a man who works for the MLBPA.

Jean Afterman is a woman who is the assistant GM of the Yankees.

Either one of them could have been who he was speaking about. Were we not supposed to clarify that? He mentioned the name, not the media. So it made sense to ask him.

Giambi presumably would have said the last name of the person he was speaking about. That would seem like a normal thing to do.

If there were two people in your office named Joe and you said “Ask Joe” and a co-worked said “Which one?” Would your answer be “I don’t know?”

I didn’t bash him. I published exactly what was said.

  47. Sopnas February 24th, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Arod unscripted is a train wreck.

  48. The Interpreter™ February 24th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

If you asked someone about an upcoming meeting, and he said: “I have no idea… I’m not sure. I’m just waiting to hear from somebody. Maybe Joe. I’m not sure.”

A couple of minutes later, a follow-up question: “Hey – *which* Joe?”

    “I don’t know.”

    I.e., “I don’t know ‘which Joe’.”
