Trying to figure out the WBC rosters

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 24, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

According to MLB.com, Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras are on the final roster of the Dominican Republic team in the WBC.

Note to the DR team: Edwar can’t throw because of a sore shoulder. I have no idea if Veras is actually on the team or not. The WBC is a bit haphazard.

Damaso Marte is on the DR roster, which I do believe is actually the case.

Joe Girardi isn’t too thrilled with the timing of the tournament. But he understands the desire to want to play. “If they had this when I was a player, I would have wanted to be there,” he said.

In response to many, many e-mails, the Yankees said that Old Timers’ Day will be July 19 against Detroit. That is a Sunday afternoon game.

I’m still trying to get the official word on the availability of beer in the bleachers.

No $12 beers in the bleachers? I’m outraged.

  2. Fran February 24th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

Old Timers Day always used to be on a Saturday. Guess they’re trying it on a Sunday this year.

  3. dave February 24th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

The seats that I waited 10 years to get – third base line in the main section sheltered from the sun and the rain has turned into bleachers seats or nothing. Thank god they also lowered the price on the tickets as I dont know how much of a deal 80 something dollar bleacher seats would be. But I am assuming they still have a separate door for the bleacher creatures, a limited selection of food and the inability to get a beer. Maybe I AM incorrect on that last part but if I knew all this, I would have preferred staying in the old stadium for the rest of my life. I guess i should consider us lucky that we still have sunday tickets instead of weekday seats like some other season ticket holders I have heard from but this really does suck. I am still debating whether we are going to get these seats or pass on them and just try to score a few decent seats during the season. Its not even like the price of the tickets are discounted really for bleacher seats. What a travesty…

  4. James February 24th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Someone in the other beer thread said they called and were told bleacher seats would have access to the centerfield sports bar (makes sense it’s entirely surrounded by 5 bleacher sections with no other way to get to it) and be allowed to consume beer there but not take it back to the seats. Odd, but better than before! How it’s a better idea to gather everyone who is drinking in the bleachers into one specific area vs dispersing them is a little beyond me, but it will make for interesting sox games. I’d put the over/under on cops in that bar at 5.

  5. James February 24th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Dave, you must have been offered the section directly in front of the far portions of the bleachers, not technically the bleachers. Kind of hard to stomach paying 80 when the guy 15 feet behind is paying 12.

  6. Chris February 24th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

    Bernie’s in =)

  7. dave February 24th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

And people could say the total fraud they are pulling regarding season ticket holders getting screwed over isnt the organizations fault all they want but the fact is no one told the yankees to decrease the number of seats after selling out every season. Of course, with more demand and less seats, the prices would skyrocket and loyal fans would be casually thrown out of their old seats with little regard to finding us comparable seats. It would be nice to feel some appreciation for buying these tickets year in and year out even when the prices almost doubled but i guess the organization had other plans for the die hard fans. I hope the money they make with the xtra luxury boxes are worth it because this franchise took a huge hit in terms of public perception.

  8. E-Man February 24th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

    Beer?

When the hell are tickets going on sale?

  9. James February 24th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....lector.jsp

    sections 103/104 + 136/137 = $80
the bleacher seats directly behind them are 12. That’s 68 for the ability to have your beer at your seat and have a back rest.

  10. saucy February 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

    Backrests are essential

  11. Sean February 24th, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Is the Sports Bar near the bleachers called Tipsy McStagger’s?
Seriously – New Stadium – new rules – allow beer in bleachers
I miss the old Stadium Already.
Ar least Stadium Pizza will still be there.

We all want to see the superstars so thank their agents for the high price of seeing a game. I wonder if Aroid will be a syringe spokesperson? lololololol

  15. Jeff February 24th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

The WBC is such a joke. All they need is a prominent player to get injured in this event and it will be over. If you’re going to do this, do it a week after the World Series, when players’ bodies are in game-shape and pitchers’ arms are already stretched out.

If you’re a Yankees fan, be honest: would you rather see Team USA win and have Jeter injured or Team USA to be eliminated and Jeter leads the Yanks to #27?

  16. Trevor February 24th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

    “Bleachers are bleachers… no backrests”

Some stadiums do have bleacher backrest. Case in point the ones in St.Louis do.

  17. toxic fungibles February 24th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

ive gotten so i buy single game tickets for one or two games per year now, thats it. i live in philly, id still make the trip more often but the prices are just ridiculous. field level seats for the world champs are $40.

  18. Betsy February 24th, 2009 at 7:57 pm

I still don’t trust uknown staffs to be working with our pitchers – I really prefer that Marte not go, but oh well. Man, I hate the WBC – actually, I just hate the timing of it – The tournament itself is a good idea. I just pray that no one on our team or any team gets hurt during these meaningless games.

I’m going to tape the Thursday game on YES – finally, I’ll be able to see Phil in action – and I love that Bruney, Meleancon and Albaladejo are also slated to pitch.

It’s great that Posada’s rehab is going so well, but Matsui seems like he’s taking a long time to recover. Still, Michael Kay said the knees feel good and that’s the most important thing. Also great news on Jeter, but I hope he takes it easy (well he won’t, so I hope the U.S. manager does) – I don’t want him to have a lingering hamstring issue to deal with all year.

  19. Chien-Ming Vase February 24th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

people get hurt in regular ST games too.

  20. Zach Lawrence February 24th, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Here is a full list of players in the Yankees organization reported to play based on the final roster:

    Robinson Cano DR
    Francisco Cervelli ITA
    Derek Jeter USA
    Kai Liu CHN
    Damaso Marte DOM
    Edwar Ramirez DOM
    Alex Rodriguez DOM
    Jorge Vazquez MEX
    Jose Veras DOM
    Zhenwang Zhang CHN

  21. Joe February 24th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

    Chien -

Exactly. Look at Cervelli. Hell, didn’t Wang miss the first month of the season in 07 because of a hamstring injury that he got in ST? Last yr Karstens got hurt too… and his injury was the reason that Joe used Albaladejo and Ohlendorf as long relievers.

  22. Zolio February 24th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Right-handed relievers Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras, both potential members of the Dominican Republic roster, are among the latest players to state that they will turn down the opportunity to pitch in the Classic.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to go over there right now,” Ramirez said. “I’ve got to stay here. I’ve got my mind-set here with the Yankees.”

So I was watching a little bit of the top 9 yesterday and Costas stated that Keith Hernandez was the best fielding first baseman he had ever seen. I know Keith was slick at first but was he the best?

    Thoughts?

  25. gayle February 24th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Tom I saw Keith as well an thought the same thing but his sources were “publishing circles” which could mean anything. They way he promo’ed that bit you /I was expecting something major not that

  26. Clint February 24th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

FYI, the following ST games are on the MLB Network

    2/28 – vs. Minnesota
    3/3 vs. Team USA
    3/22 – @ Tampa Bay
    3/24 – vs. Boston
    3/28 – @ Atlanta
    4/1 – vs. Philadelphia
    4/3 – vs. Chi. Cubs

  27. Yankeehottie February 24th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Will there be a limit of beer one will be allowed to chug within 5 minutes before returning to the bleachers?

  28. Phil February 24th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

This idea that anyone is really waiting for the final rosters for the WBC to be revealed is a joke. Selig cannot be gone soon enough.

  29. AMS223 February 24th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

James: People are saying that the new seats in front of the bleachers are some of the best in the stadium. You sit literally on top of the wall and its a considerable difference to the bleachers, not just back rests

  30. jennifer February 24th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Anyone know what games espn will show?

  31. gayle February 24th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

AM and james I just bought first row on that section (the one in front of the bleachers) for Old Timers Day only 50 dollars above face value. I think most dont know yet that OTD is ont he SUnday as it was originally listed for the SAturday so prices were way inflated for the Saturday but not yet SUnday. The 3d view from those seats looks amazing!!

  32. Chien-Ming Vase February 24th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

hernandez was the best fielding 1B i’ve seen.

  33. Clint February 24th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

    jennifer,

Surprisingly, I can’t find out any of them. I read somewhere they will only be televising WBC games, but I don’t know if thats true.

ST starts tomorrow and the only game that ESPN has on its schedule is Houston/Atlanta on Thursday. ESPN has released its Sunday/Monday night games for the first 2 months of the season, but nothing on ST.

I tought that Mattingly was a litle better, especially on the 3-6-3 DP. The best I ever saw, though was Wes Parker of the mid ’60s-’70s Dodgers.

  35. jennifer February 24th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Thanks Clint, I couldn’t figure out where to look on their site. I am bummed that there aren’t too many games on tv. I’ll be dvring Thursdays game and watch it when I get home from work.

I hope Pete live blogs the game, at least till the starters come out.

  36. Joe from Long Island February 24th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

I’m watching Ken Burns’ Baseball on MLBNetwork, and they’re showing Bill Lee, late of the Red Sox, go on and on about various things. After watching him for a bit, I can see why Graig Nettles punched him out.

I recorded TORA TORA TORA this weekend and im trying to get myself to watch a 30 something year old movie. How long into the movie will it take before i get hooked? Im hoping a movie that old has alot of action.

Whos your top 5 fielding first basemans GB?

  39. James February 24th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

AMS a few years back I had a partial plan that put me about 10 feet to the right of the RF foul pole, 2nd row. They are fun seats because you can interact with players during warm ups, you’re in home territory and you can heckle the opposing outfielder. BTW, the front sections of those areas are actually $100. That said those would be the last tickets I’d buy at the new stadium.. For the same exact price you could be sitting three sections inside the foul pole (still right on the wall) or in a section like 127B (rows 15+) which is 5 sections inside the foul pole (all field level). Having sat in the equivalent of those sections and the bleachers, I know for a fact,(with bleacher sections not separated from the stadium anymore) the only difference IS the beer and backrest and $88 per.

“Francisco Cervelli is leaving camp to play for Italy in the WBC. Yes, he’s Venezuelan. But under WBC rules you can play for any country you can point to on a globe.”

ARod originally wanted to play for Team France but he could not point to it on a globe. When it was pointed out to ARod that technically France had no baseball program Rodriguez replied ” That’s too bad. I really wanted the chance to play a more stylized type of game”

When asked to clarify his statement, Arod responded “You know, it’s fabulous.”

Arod later confessed that he also contemplated playing for The Netherlands citing their lax attitude regarding prostitition and drug possession as ” a nice touch ” and “a thoughtful incentive”

You’d better get hooked early, because the Japanese point of view is spoken in Japanese with sub-titles. It gives everything from the planning and the code breaking right up to nd including the attack. They used footage and historical documents from both countries. It’s a long, but, impressive movie and great footage.

On Wes Parker, he wasn’t a great hitter, except for one season, but, he had speed and amazing grove. Only played 9 years, because he didn’t want to get traded from his home town. His fater was a multi-millionaire, so, he didn’t need the money. 1100 games at first base and only 45 errors, over 9600 total chances, great arm, amazing range.
Played all three outfield spots well.

And they play Minnesota on March 20th, not Toronto.

I think those are last year’s ESPN telecasts.

  50. Mark in Tampa February 24th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

I know that the Minnesota people always talked about Kent Hrbek as being the best fielding 1st baseman, but I thought Mattingly was much better. Of course, I only saw Hrbek 6 times per year or so.

I thought Keith Hernandez was very good, but many announcers put so much stock into how he played bunts. I thought Donnie was better at everything else.

  52. Mark in Tampa February 24th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Palmeiro must have been the greatest first baseman. He once won a Gold Glove by only playing about 15 games at first! How great must you be to do that?

  53. GreenBeret7 February 24th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Correction: On Wes Parker, he wasn’t a great hitter, except for one season, but, he had speed and amazing ***grove***

Although he was healthy and had amazing orange groves, his amazing ***glove*** helped him more on the ball field.

Trust me…the only advantage to being my age is getting to see all of the greats of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s in their primes. It’s been a treat. I don’t mind answering questions..I enjoy it. I’ll give you an honest opinion on players, games or minor leaguers if I’ve seen them play. Not totally based on numbers, and certainly not based on the baseball fan’s new love of the Bill James view on fantasy numbers.

    From this morning’s article on mlb.com: http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....8;c_id=nyy

Right-handers Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras were also listed on the Dominican Republic roster, but both declined in favor of remaining in camp with the Yankees. Ramirez has been sidelined due to bursitis in his pitching shoulder, and Veras said Wednesday that he had turned down the invitation.

“I want to represent my country, but it’s more important for me to be here with the Yankees,” Veras said. “I have to be here with my teammates.”
