Ramirez out for three days

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 24, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Edwar Ramirez has what is being called “mild bursitis” and will be out at least three days. He’ll spend the time eating cheeseburgers and milkshakes to try and get to 145 pounds or so.

This would be the entry where I normally tell you what pitchers are throwing today. But I got involved with a long interview while in the clubhouse and never got a chance to take a look at the schedule.

Sorry about that. But the Yankees are about to get started here in Tampa, where it’s a pleasant 61 and headed up to 71.

Back in a bit with some reports from the field.

  2. Joe (Utica) February 24th, 2009 at 10:59 am

Who did you Interview??? Will you post it?

  3. Manny D (RAB) February 24th, 2009 at 11:00 am

camden chat had an interesting thing where he threw out like 20 questions and is polling the blog for results.

    10 yankees bets for 2009:

    1. Over/under 42 home runs for arod

    2. More at-bats melky or gardner

    3. Who will walk more, teixeira or arod?

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for hideki matsui

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, rivera or hughes?

    6. Over/under 27 starts for burnett

    7. Who records more ML saves, marte, brackman, melancon or joba?

    8. More at-bats, nady or swisher

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at fenway

  5. jimmy1138 February 24th, 2009 at 11:01 am

Because of the WBC spring training starts pretty early. As Peter explained some days ago the important guys won’t pitch for the next days and guys like Tomko who fight for a spot (possible on other teams) will get the nod.

  6. Chien-Ming Vase February 24th, 2009 at 11:03 am

heres mine: over, melky, tex, under, hughes, over, marte, swisher, push, push.

  7. VIGGY February 24th, 2009 at 11:03 am

did anybody think what the blue jays could of done for 20 mil.
    5 mil. for giambi
    5 mil for garlind
    5 mil for abreu
    5 mil fot smoltz
thay would be a pritty good team along with what thay already got.

  8. vinny-b February 24th, 2009 at 11:05 am

“What’s the point of Brett Tomko pitching tomorrow?”

no kidding. We already had no place to pitch, all the + arms we have in AAA/AA

  9. Manny D February 24th, 2009 at 11:05 am

Tomko is fighting for a pen spot isn’t he?

  10. vinny-b February 24th, 2009 at 11:06 am

    speaking of Ramirez.

hopefully LAD does not give Manny 3 years. No need to. Manny has no leverage. And he will not sit-out the season/retire.

  11. Tarheelyank February 24th, 2009 at 11:08 am

What’s the point of Brett Tomka pitching tomorrow?

    Cervelli needs the work.

Seriously, I don’t get it either.

  12. Manny D (RAB) February 24th, 2009 at 11:08 am

“hopefully LAD does not give Manny 3 years. No need to. Manny has no leverage. And he will not sit-out the season/retire.\

It doesn’t matter what Manny gets, he’s not coming to N.Y, well the Bronx.

  13. gayle February 24th, 2009 at 11:09 am

The point is spring training is longer this year so why wear out your arms early might as well take a look at those fighting for jobs as often as possible and skip those guys who already have it so that they get their regular work in while not over extending them in spring

  14. Brock February 24th, 2009 at 11:10 am

I am not too concerned about Ramirez unless he is on the mound.

In my opinion, it might not be such a bad thing if he can’t pitch and some other guys get a shot.

Edwar is a home run waiting to happen when he is out there.

    Anyway,

    1. Under; 2. Melky; 3. Teixeira; 4. Over; 5. Hughes; 6. Under; 7. Marte; 8. Swisher (Nady gets traded); 9. Over; 10. Over.

  15. vinny-b February 24th, 2009 at 11:11 am

    this may be interesting:

who will be the better ML pitcher. Rick Porcello or Brackman?

I know Porcello have the jump, at this time. Who knows, tho

  16. Manny D (RAB) February 24th, 2009 at 11:12 am

Will A-Rod and Teix be in the starting line-up tomorrow?

  17. Brent February 24th, 2009 at 11:14 am

  19. SteveB February 24th, 2009 at 11:16 am

Do you know what other pitchers will be involved in the next four games in addition to Tomko, Hughes, Kennedy & Joba?

  20. vinny-b February 24th, 2009 at 11:19 am

Redsox vs Twins: mlb network @ 7pm (tomorrow)

Giants vs someone: mlb network @ 3pm (tomorrow)

  21. Joe (Utica) February 24th, 2009 at 11:21 am

    Here it is:
    1. Over (He’s still A-Rod)
    2. Gardner (Girardi Loves Luis Castillo I mean Bret Gardner)
    3. A-Rod (See #1)
    4. Under (Imagine Cal Ripken Leaning how to ride pine)
    5. Rivera (Yanks learned there lesson, if the question was Coke my answer would be different)
    6. Under (But just wait til the dividends the Yankees see on his contract year.
    7. Malancon (JOBA NEEDS TO AFFECT MORE THAN 35 GAMES BRIAN!)
    8. Swisher (I agree Nady gets the boot)
    9. Over (Happens every year)
    10. OVER (THEY GET 7 Write it down).

    GREAT QUESTIONS.

  22. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here February 24th, 2009 at 11:23 am

Edwar should go on the CC diet while he is resting

  23. JoeyA February 24th, 2009 at 11:24 am

Baseball america has their top 100 prospect list up.

    36. A-Jax
    38. Montero
    92. Brackman

  24. wawa February 24th, 2009 at 11:34 am

damn joe, 7 wins in fenway? i’m buying some sam adams stock!

  25. ALB3 February 24th, 2009 at 11:34 am

    question of the day:

    Is Jesus Montero REALLY 19?

After meeting him, I’m inclined to say he’s not much older than 20 or 21, but I have trouble believing 19 (with all of the Tejada business, plus many, many others).

  26. wawa February 24th, 2009 at 11:36 am

is jesus montero really jesus montero?

  27. Fran February 24th, 2009 at 11:41 am

    Glad nothing serious with Edwar.
Looking forward to some more spring training pictures and updates.

  28. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am

(posted on previous thread. still uninteresting, I’m sure! :D )

Well okay! Interesting to me only I’m sure is that it looks like I will be going to spring training. I think though it would be a good idea for me to look for game tickets.

A smart idea on my part was to decide to hold off until April to go to Atlanta. I don’t think I was going to be able to switch gears from players to pandas and enjoy both fully! Also, I will try to go at a time when the Bravos are at home so I can take in a game at the same time.

Back to the internet to try to get me some tickets.

  29. Jorge (México) February 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am

Let’s see how this issue affects Edwar’s status. Coke and Melancon are knocking on the door.
    About the poll:
    1. Over/under 42 home runs for Arod [Over]

    2. More at-bats Melky or Gardner [Gardner]

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for Hideki Matsui [Over]

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, Rivera or Hughes? [Rivera, since Hughes will pitch at AAA for the most of 2009]

    6. Over/under 27 starts for Burnett [Under. This is not a contract-season for him]

    7. Who records more ML saves, Marte, Brackman, Melancon or Joba? [Marte]

    8. More at-bats, Nady or Swisher [Nady]

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees [Under]

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at Fenway [Over]

  30. Anthony Murillo February 24th, 2009 at 11:46 am

I personally hope Jonathan Albaladejo makes the team. I like hearing Bob Sheppard introduce him…

    Anyways:

    2. More at-bats Melky or Gardner [Melky]

    3. Who will walk more, Teixeira or Arod? [Teixeira]

    8. More at-bats, Nady or Swisher [Nady]

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees [Under]

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at Fenway [Over]

  31. steve February 24th, 2009 at 11:47 am

3 days isin’t too bad…. i was worried he’d be out a couple of weeks

so he won’t miss much, just 2 exhibition games.

  32. Paddy R February 24th, 2009 at 11:48 am

pete awesome story today in the paper. does anyone know if there is a difference in the yankee organization between that department and the advance scouting department. it seems like this is not what that department does, but just wanted to double check.

  33. Wilson February 24th, 2009 at 11:49 am

Has ESPN released it’s Spring Training games yet? The only one that I’ve seen was Houston/Atlanta this Friday.

  34. pat February 24th, 2009 at 11:49 am

Jeter, A-Rod, Cano, Swisher, Gardner and Jackson making the trip tomorrow.

  35. Drain003 February 24th, 2009 at 11:50 am

    1. Over/under 42 home runs for arod [UNDER]

    2. More at-bats melky or gardner [GARDNER]

    3. Who will walk more, teixeira or arod? [AROD]

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for hideki matsui [OVER]

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, rivera or hughes? [RIVERA]

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at fenway [OVER]

  36. Zolio February 24th, 2009 at 11:54 am

Melancon is going to be an absolute beast. The only thing keeping him from making the opening day roster is the 40 man roster crunch.

I hope we get to see him Thurs. on YES… he is the guy I’m most looking forward to seeing

  37. rbj February 24th, 2009 at 11:56 am

Warning, Sidney Ponson is still unsigned. Don’t let the info on cheeseburgers & milkshakes get out, or he might just show up and push Edwar out of the way.

  38. Jason February 24th, 2009 at 11:56 am

Edwar’s injury could force Melancon on the roster.

If he outperforms his competitors in ST, they simply cannot ignore him. If they are not going to give him a fair chance to earn a spot, let them be straight up with him and tell him he is starting at AAA— don’t give him false hope like we did with Scott Patterson last year. And Melancon is 10x the arm that Patterson is and actually has 20 AAA innings.

  39. trisha - Want the truth? Read Canseco's book. February 24th, 2009 at 11:57 am

Here’s a clue (for me anyway). Tickets to spring training at Legends Field sell out very quickly. But I was able to get WBC tickets plus a ticket for the Braves game at their venue. No tickets for regular spring ticket games at Legends Field.

  40. tom February 24th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

kim jones actually does a great job with beningo.

  41. Betsy February 24th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Unbelievably, Kim Jones questioned this move this morning with Sweeney, asking whether Joe should have done this later in camp when the guys really DO need a break. She’s clearly clueless because the games start tomorrow … rolling eyes smiley, where are you?

Ken Davidoff has a bitter piece in the Newsday today (sorry, can’t link to it) about how Joe is still very rigid, blah blah blah. He just does not seem willing to give Girardi a chance, which is very disappointing. I think most of the mediots at least have an open mind….there is just nothing bad that can be said about yesterday’s outing.

Sounds like bad news for Edwar – a precursor for major surgery? Sheesh – what a surprise that the injury bug strikes again. When the Yankees get hurt, they get hurt in a big way. No minor hamstring pulls, no day-to-day bruises, but major injuries that can devastate a team. 2009 is starting the same way 2008 left off – boy, I’m trying hard not to be depressed about this, lol

  42. 7*7 February 24th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

To be fair to Kim, she did preface it by saying she understands the jist of why Girardi did it but asked whether it would have been better to do it at a later date when guys really do need to rest/relax. Certainly a valid point, but I doubt there was room to schedule it in the middle of the game schedule.

  43. Al from BK(waiting for opening day!) February 24th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

10 yankees bets for 2009: HERES MINE

    1. Over/under 42 home runs for arod [OVER]

    2. More at-bats melky or gardner [GARDNER]

    3. Who will walk more, teixeira or arod? [TEIXEIRA]

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for hideki matsui [OVER]

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, rivera or hughes? [HUGHES]

    6. Over/under 27 starts for burnett [OVER]

    7. Who records more ML saves, marte, brackman, melancon or joba? [MELANCON]

    8. More at-bats, nady or swisher [NADY]

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees [UNDER]

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at fenway [OVER]

  44. Steve B February 24th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

    1. Over/under 42 home runs for arod (UNDER)

    2. More at-bats melky or gardner (Gardner)

    3. Who will walk more, teixeira or arod? (Arod)

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for hideki matsui (OVER)

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, rivera or hughes? (Think Hughes sees 10 starts, but Mo has more K’s)

    6. Over/under 27 starts for burnett (27 seems about right)

    7. Who records more ML saves, marte, brackman, melancon or joba? (In order Marte, Melancon, Joba. Brackman doesn’t sees the bigs only on TV this year)

    8. More at-bats, nady or swisher (Swisher. Nady’s poor #’s vs. RHP’s gets Swish on the good end of a platoon)

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees (UNDER)

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at fenway (If it were 3.5 I’d go OVER, if 4.5 I’d go UNDER – 4 seems about right)

  45. ZMan February 24th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

And for everyone Tanyon Sturtze and Karsay who needed major surgery, there are hundreds of pitchers in Spring Training who recovered within a couple of days.

  46. Giuseppe Franco February 24th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

I don’t wish injury on anyone – but losing Edwar wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

    He’s a one-trick pony and little else.

  47. Steve B February 24th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Oops. Should read “Brackman sees the bigs only on TV this year.”

  48. Gary February 24th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

    Trish :

Never a problem with scalpers at Steinbrenner Field. Fair and honest. No rip offs. Just be acquainted with the seating plan.

  49. Steve B February 24th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

“I don’t wish injury on anyone – but losing Edwar wouldn’t be that big of a deal.”

Pretty much agree. Edwar occasionally has some moments, but he’s not a high end relief pitcher by any stretch.

  50. wawa February 24th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

  51. Giuseppe Franco February 24th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

The only thing Edwar Ramirez really provides is contrast with that bugs bunny change up because the rest of those bullpen arms throw much harder and mix in sliders and curves as their out pitches.

  52. wawa February 24th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

sorry, it should be gardner 6 melky 3

  53. joe February 24th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for hideki matsui (Under)

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, rivera or hughes? (Hughes, someone is going to get nicked up)

    6. Over/under 27 starts for burnett (Under, the most likely candidate)

    7. Who records more ML saves, marte, brackman, melancon or joba? (Marte)

    8. More at-bats, nady or swisher (Nady)

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees (Under)

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at fenway (Over)

  55. wawa February 24th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

if one more person answers the poll i can just put % signs behind them and make them look all authoritative and scientific.

  56. Steve B February 24th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

“3. Who will walk more, teixeira or arod? [TEIXEIRA 6 AROD 3]”

Real answer should be “whoever bats 4th”

  57. JohnC February 24th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Does anyone really think Ramirez would be a big loss for the pen with so many other candidates in camp? Hitters have adjusted to his change up so he needs to improve his fastball command and perhaps develop a cutter to keep hitters honest, especially lefties. Perhaps Mariano can work on a cutter with him.

  58. Dan February 24th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

    Exactly.

Edwar isin’t that big of a loss– atleast it wasn’t Melancon or Rivera. And we don’t even know if Edwar is out more than 3 days anyway. Hope he gets better soon though.

  59. wolf man February 24th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

just plug in melancon and away we go

  60. Tarheelyank February 24th, 2009 at 12:33 pm

    Jose Guillen–ouch!
“When told by team doctors that an ingrown nail on his right big toe might require surgery, Guillen took matters into his own hands and removed the nail by himself with a pair of tweezers later that night.”

“Let me tell you, I cried. I had one tough hour. But I got it out.”
“I reached in there (with the tweezers) … and poked around until I got the end of it. Then I counted one, two, three and just pulled …. Oh, my God. It came out, but tears were running down my cheeks.”

OK people since were in the polling mood give your projected bullpen:(Assuming they take 7)

    Mariano Rivera-CL
    Brian Bruney-8th
    Damaso Marte-8th/situational
    Mark Melancon-(I’m predicting a lights-out camp)
    Phil Coke-Lefty/multiple innings
David Robertson-(Good fastball/curve liked what I saw last year)
    Alfredo Aceves-Long relief

  63. m February 24th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

I don’t know why it was such a big deal that the guys took a day off. What if it had stormed? Would the Yankees lose their chance at a pennant because mother nature forced the cancellation of practice?

  64. Ham Fighters February 24th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

i only heard one person object to the pool hall trip and im pretty sure that guy was kidding.

  65. m February 24th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

    -Mariano
    -Bruney
    -Marte
-Albaladejo (he should be in mid-season form)
    -Veras
    -Coke
    -Aceves (longman)

Melancon starts in AAA. Just because, but gets the first call up.

al, i agree with your bp except id leave melancon behind to work in the minors and i’d carry both melky and gardner and a 3rd catcher.

    Edwar sits with sore shoulder
    February 24, 2009

A few notes as the Yankees prepare for their final day of workouts before the exhibition schedule kicks off….

Edwar Ramirez was diagnosed with “mild bursitis” in his right shoulder, which will keep him from throwing at all for a minimum of three days.

That certainly doesn’t sound like a catastrophic injury, but let’s not forget that Steve Karsay and Tanyon Sturtze were initially diagnosed with the same thing before eventually undergoing major shoulder surgery. Certainly something to keep an eye on.

The traveling roster for the Yankees’ first game includes Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson. Brett Tomko will start the game, while bullpen hopefuls Jose Veras and Dave Robertson are also on the list. It will be interesting to see the type of reaction A-Rod gets from the Dunedin fans.

Lastly, it seems that Joe Girardi’s pool adventure was a big hit with his players. Everybody seemed to have a good time, and it made for some humorous trash talk this morning. Brian Bruney was taking the brunt of it, his 8-ball skills apparently nowhere near his ability to throw a fastball.

Ironically, Girardi had told us early yesterday morning that he had heard Bruney was a strong pool player. I guess his scouting reports on his players’ pool aptitude were not as thorough as his baseball reports. As it turns out, Bruney is more Eddie Munster than Eddie Felson.

“There were plenty of bad ones,” Mark Teixeira said. “Brian Bruney takes the cake as the worst pool player on the team. He’ll take the heat for that one.”

    1. Over/under 42 home runs for arod [I'll say UNDER onlybecause of the risk of a suspension]

    2. More at-bats melky or gardner [GARDNER]

    3. Who will walk more, teixeira or arod? [A-ROD absolutely in the clean-up spot]

    4. Over/under 80 rbi for hideki matsui [OVER]

    5. Who gets more ML strikeouts for the Yankees, rivera or hughes? [Close, but RIVERA has a better shot]

    6. Over/under 27 starts for burnett [OVER]

    7. Who records more ML saves, marte, brackman, melancon or joba? [MARTE]

    8. More at-bats, nady or swisher [Gotta go with NADY because he's the starting RF]

    9. Over/under: 9 different pitchers start games for the Yankees [Absolutely OVER. Six is the absolute minimum, with no injuries at all.]

    10. Over/under 4 yankee wins at fenway [PUSH. How many do they play there? Nine? Ten? Four wins sounds about right]

  69. Steve B February 24th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

    Mariano Rivera-CL
    Brian Bruney-8th
    Damaso Marte-8th/situational
    Mark Melancon-(I’m predicting a lights-out camp)
    Phil Coke-Lefty/multiple innings
David Robertson-(Good fastball/curve liked what I saw last year)
    Alfredo Aceves-Long relief

Think Melancon starts in AAA pretty much no matter what. Don’t really think anyone believes spring training is anything close to a fair barometer for how things will play in the majors. I think he’s in SWB til somewhere between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. Veras probably sticks for now. Also see Albaladejo beating out Robertson.

    Jose Guillen—ouch!”

Speaking of ouch, up six with the ball, a minute and half left, and Maryland has no timeouts…WTF was that?

  71. jennifer February 24th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Someone needs to tell that idiot Kim Jones this.

Although Girardi took pains to point out the players were looking at 27 straight days (for the pitchers and catchers) and 22 (for the position players) without a spring training off-day because of the World Baseball Classic, it was fairly apparent the underlying reason for his pool hall excursion was to further cultivate a sense of camaraderie with his team.

So clearly there was no way to do it later in camp. Plus if there was an off day are you going to make the team get together? Please she is losing what ever little respect I had with her.

c’mon they missed another day of stretching and running in the Of. its ridiculous to think that is going to effect thier season. ST which was already too long is even longer this year.

there must be absolutely nothing going on in the sports world if skipping one day of workouts is the story of the day.

  73. saucY February 24th, 2009 at 12:59 pm

  74. saucY February 24th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

day off? last i checked playing pool is hard work!

  75. Patrick February 24th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Also its smart to do a team-building exercise early on. There are several new players on the team that will be in leadership positions, it was key to try and improve chemistry early on.

About the bullpen.. I think it will end up being: Rivera, Bruney, Marte, Veras, Albaladejo, Coke, Giese. This is assuming that Ramirez’s injury is serious. If it isn’t then he’ll make it over Albaladejo. I’d like to see Melancon in there but I doubt Girardi will let him jump over Ramirez, Robertson, Albaladejo and Veras. I also believe that Giese will be the long reliever/spot starter because he’s been around the league for longer than Aceves. Most coaches usually pick the veteran over the young guy.

“there must be absolutely nothing going on in the sports world if skipping one day of workouts is the story of the day.”

That’s life in pinstripes for you.

  77. Tarheelyank February 24th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

“Speaking of ouch, up six with the ball, a minute and half left, and Maryland has no timeouts…WTF was that?”

That is called a Roy Williams talking point for march.

The three losses have come when the opposing guard has had a career night. I guess they bring out the best in some players.

  78. Ham Fighters February 24th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

somebody get allen iverson to explain the value of spring training practice to kim please?

  79. disco stu February 24th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

If Tex bats 3rd and Arod 4th, I would figure A-Rod would end up getting more walks. Why would pitchers consistently be pitching around Tex when A-Rod is on deck?

Didnt Roger Maris only walk about 30 times when he 61 homes in ’61 due to having “The Mick” batting directly behind him?

  80. hardwired February 24th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

I predict Edwar Ramirez laughs at all who mocked him when he’s 150-years old (assuming that whole ‘thin mice’ vs. ‘fat mice’ life expectancy experiment in mice carries over to humans).

  81. C February 24th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

  82. Aaron February 25th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Edwar will be back and will shut down everyone. People say all he has is that changeup but do those people remember how foolish it still makes every batter look?
