Manny rejects offer from Dodgers

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 26, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I know this is not Yankees-related. But this press release from the Dodgers sure is interesting:

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers today received a letter from Scott Boras, the agent for Manny Ramirez, rejecting the offer that the club made yesterday. This rejection is the fourth by the agent in the club’s attempts to sign Manny.

“We love Manny Ramirez,” said Dodgers Owner Frank McCourt, “And we want Manny back, but we feel we are negotiating against ourselves. When his agent finds those ‘serious offers’ from other clubs, we’ll be happy to re-start the negotiations.

“Even with an economy that has substantially eroded since last November, out of respect for Manny and his talents, we actually improved our offer.

“So now, we start from scratch.”

You can say what you want about A-Rod, but at least he comes to play. Manny cannot be counted on not to stand at the plate and watch three strikes if he isnt in the mood. That is why he won’t even get his 2/45 at this point.

The best thing about all this is that the players use of steroids helped bring baseball back from the dead after mcgwire and sosa used them to hit monster homeruns and chase a monumental record which completely rejuvenated the sport after the strike.
Now, the media’s use of steroids is absolutely killing baseball in the minds of fans young and old alike and tearing down the best sport in the world brick by brick as they crucify arod and claim that no player can ever say he never used steroids and be believed again nor can we ever actualy prove who did and didnt partake in this illegal madness.

Moreover, the concept that taking roids is evil and only the worst people in the world can sink that low is being shoved down our throat so hard that I gag when I read some of these articles. Its gotten to the point that baseball is more about steroids than the actual game. I for one am disgusted by this whole thing – not that the players did it as that is somewhat understandable but the charade that this whole thing has become. I dont know whether to laugh or cry as baseball has never hit a lower point in my lifetime and people want to blame all this on one guy which is even more of a despicable joke.

  9. Shdw February 26th, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Wow. I thought for sure he was going to accept that one. For the sake of the Yankees, I hope that the Giants sign Manny since it will bring them one step closer to having the Yankees’ first round draft pick pass Boston’s but they just don’t seem that interested. As of right now the Dodgers are bidding against themselves and Boras doesn’t seem to want to accept that there is no competition going on here

I have to be honest, Manny has done NOTHING to prove the Red Sox allegations about him wrong.

The fact that it’s 2 weeks into spring training and he’s still unsigned when offered 25 million for at least 1 season tells you everything you need to know about the guy.

Letting this go on so long has actually decreased his value to the rest of the sport.

In the end though, the Dodgers will give him his money because it’s LA and they need him to put fannies in seats. He’s box office.

  12. m February 26th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

    dave,

How tiny is your violin? They are not laying this on one player. There have been very few positive tests. Alex got popped. Bonds didn’t have a known positive test, yet he still got dragged through the muck. How stayed buried for 5 years is beyond me. At least A-rod’s not in any legal trouble or facing any jailtime.

But not to worry, the Dalai Lama Peter Gammons has foreseen that the rest of the list will come out. Then the outrage and indignity can be targeted towards the other guys who tested positive.

Manny? If he’s not coming to the Yankees, then I have no interest. His teammates are practically begging publicly.

  13. Brian from PA February 26th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

I guess Boras and Manny still refuse to the believe that no one wants him. not at that money. He is a completely 1 dimensional player who is notorious for not giving his all and can quit on the team at any moment. WTF do they expect?

I’d like to know what he and Boras are smoking if they think any NL team would sign him for more than 1 season when there’s no way he can just DH. I’d also like to know is there a team in the AL who has both the financial resources and the need for a DH that could be a fit for Manny?

He can do this dance with the Dodgers all he wants. But that greedy SOB wanted 4 years at an annual salary in the ballpark of 25-27.5 mil. And even if he gets 4 years and 100+ mil he demands having an escape clause included so he can go back on the market if it improves. because apparently 4 years and 100 mil is the absolute minimum that an again DH-type who you can’t even count on to play for you on a given day deserves.

  14. Giuseppe Franco February 26th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

The Dodgers are doing exactly what they should be doing. They are the only team in the race.

If Manny wants to play ball, he’ll have to make some concessions. If not, stay home.

  15. dave February 26th, 2009 at 11:52 pm

What do you even mean the dodgers will give him his money G love? What is manny even asking for? This makes zero sense from the dodgers perspective – it is so abundantly clear that LA is bidding against themselves and teams dont do that forever.Manny has no leverage unless he wants to sign midseason and likely lose money in the process. The person who looks horrendous here is boras. Manny just is not worth any more than 25 mil in any market – he cant field, he cant run and he is old. He is actually a liability in the field rather than an asset. Manny is just being an idiot whether he is listening to boras or deciding this himself. I dont know what he is thinking.

  16. 7*7 February 26th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    There is no 2nd team.

How foolish can Boras be? In this economy, which team has $25+ in the fault during Spring Training?

  17. Brian from PA February 26th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

i hope he goes unsigned and partway into the season the only teams interested are small market, wannabe contenders that he wouldn’t dare sign with, so he just stays the hell away. good riddance i’d say.

  18. Hey now February 26th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Rod should thank Manny for this.

  19. Betsy February 26th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

This is really unbelievable – and I have always been one who believes that the players should try and get whatever they can. The Dodgers have gone above and beyond to show Manny that they want him – it sucks for them because if they cut off negotiations, they’ll hurt their team on the field (they need Manny). If they don’t, then they’ve gotten played for fools. The Giants will probably swoop in if the Dodgers back out……Manny should take the freaking 2 year deal, bust his butt and do what he can to rehab his reputation. That may not be possible now.

  20. dave February 26th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

    m,

Maybe it is the world’s smallest violin but thousands of people owe one just like it. They are most certainly pretending to lay this blame on one person and one person alone at the moment. What exactly would they bring alex to court for? He never lied under oath. If you cant see how the media is at times pretending the entire steroids era is alex’s fault at times then you are not listening to the same people i am. Some people like franscesa are asbolutely unmerciful in their hatred towards him. There is no reason for it. Alex is an idiot but the criticism is unrelenting and does not fit the crime IMO.

  21. Eric February 26th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Maybe he just doesn’t want to play for the Dodgers, as crazy as that sounds.

  22. rodg12 February 26th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

    Wow, what is Manny doing????

  23. Brian February 26th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Wow. At this point Manny deserves to sit out at least part of the season. That is a legit offer. Abreu took $6MM. His choice I know, but Manny was offered $45MM for 2 years. That is a good deal.

  24. MattNC February 26th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    Dave:

“Now, the media’s use of steroids is absolutely killing baseball in the minds of fans young and old alike…”

The media isn’t using steroids, the players are.

  25. dave February 26th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

Brian – that would never, ever happen. Eventually, he would sign with LA. Why would they not maintain interest and they are certainly contenders

  26. DET 2X February 27th, 2009 at 12:00 am

The Nationals signed Adam Dunn, so they have no room now. Baltimore doesn’t have money just laying around and are not going to spend. Toronto doesn’t have money. Seattle didn’t even have money for Abreu.

    Texas maybe? The Mets? Cubs?

  27. Shdw February 27th, 2009 at 12:00 am

Everyone here should be happy he declined. We need anyone BUT the Dodgers or the Yankees to sign him in order to move our draft pick above Boston’s.

  30. dave February 27th, 2009 at 12:04 am

    Matt,

I didnt saying the media is doing steroids … I say they are using steroids meaning they are using steroids to sell papers and fill up air time. And the talk about none of us ever knowing who did what and all of the records being meaningless in this era and how horrible these players are for using is killing the sport far more than the actual players doing it hurt the sport. If the era was covered how it should be without all of the extra hype and over the top criticism – the sport would actually be in far better shape than the downward tailspin it seems to be heading in now. Im sure selena’s book and the uncovering of the 103 other names coming out will just be fuel to this already catastrophic train wreck. iF STEROIDS is covered more than the actual games while the season is going on, you know there is a problem here.

All you guys blaming Manny and Boras, SHUT UP. Boras is the best at what he does, he knows what he’s doing so just sit back and wait until opening day to judge his agent-skills.

  34. G. Love February 27th, 2009 at 12:13 am

    dave –

It’s been reported a bunch of times this off season what Manny meant financially to the Dodgers. There was an upswing in attendance and they sold a lot of jerseys and merchandise.

The only reason the Dodgers are talking 25 million for a season is because they know financially he can mean that much and more to the organization if he plays as well as he did last season.

The problem he has though is no one in baseball trusts him enough to give him the guaranteed money he’s looking for.

The Dodgers were willing to risk 45 million guaranteed. To me, that says they did some kind of financial analysis that said they could afford to risk that much money due to what he projects to mean to the club financially as productive player and a personality who brings in dollars.

He’ll get his money from LA.

The only wild card in this whole thing is he loses his mind and tells Boras he wants to play for a specific team for low dollars.

    But that isn’t happening.

Manny is on the defense now with this contract, so he’ll fumble it. There is no way he gets 25 million + from any other team in this market, especially when a bunch of teams are looking to shed payroll.

  39. Bill G February 27th, 2009 at 1:24 am

If I didn’t respect Manny before (and I didn’t), I deffinitly don’t respect him now… It would be nice to see the Dodgers string him along all the way until the season starts and then not sign him

  42. bodhisattva February 27th, 2009 at 1:39 am

^^^Except you’re not one of two of the best hitters in baseball.

Manny wants more security, most likely. The Dodgers should at least offer him two years and a third player option. He’s not Adam Dunn, he’s Manny Ramirez. He probably doesn’t care if he has to sit out half the season to get what he wants.

  43. Rankdog February 27th, 2009 at 2:56 am

“The Dodgers should at least offer him two years and a third player option. He’s not Adam Dunn, he’s Manny Ramirez. He probably doesn’t care if he has to sit out half the season to get what he wants.”

They did and he rejected it.

“All you guys blaming Manny and Boras, SHUT UP. Boras is the best at what he does, he knows what he’s doing so just sit back and wait until opening day to judge his agent-skills.”

There are two sides to the negotiating equation though Manny D. It is entirely possible that Boros will once again squeeze the last penny out of the team he is negotiating with here. But the Dodgers have to realize that for the most part they are only negotiating against themselves. Is it worth extra millions and years on the contract for the sole purpose of making this player “happy” when he isn’t going to be signed by anyone else for anything near that price? That’s the decision the Dodgers have to make.
In this economy, if I were the Dodgers, I would definitely think twice about doing too much with that.
At this point who knows how this turns out. From reading the quotes it sounds like the Dodgers management is getting pretty frustrated with it all.

  45. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother February 27th, 2009 at 7:24 am

Besides, I see the Dodgers signed Doug Mientkiewicz, so that should fill Manny’s void…

  46. Richard B February 27th, 2009 at 8:07 am

This is what seems to be the main reason that’s holding up this deal.. quoted from an article in LA Times:

What Colletti didn’t mention, the source said, is that most of Ramirez’s salary would’ve been deferred. Two other sources previously told The Times that the proposed deal included deferred payments.

Under the terms of the contract that Ramirez was offered by the Dodgers on Wednesday, he would’ve received $10 million this year. And by exercising the option for the second year, he would’ve received $10 million in 2010.

Ramirez, who turns 37 in May, would’ve been paid the remaining $25 million over the next three years without any added interest. He would’ve received $10 million in 2011, $10 million in 2012 and $5 million in 2013.

When making his counteroffer, Boras requested that none of the money be deferred.

  47. Gary February 27th, 2009 at 8:08 am

I’ll bet Manny is sorry he ever dropped his previous agent (Greg Genske) and hired Scott Boras.
He may not have pulled his antics last year in Boston which Boras did nothing to discourage and John Henry might have picked up the 2 option years of his contract.

  48. Jeremy February 27th, 2009 at 9:33 am

We’ll see how sorry Manny is when he finally gets his deal.

Boras does not misjudge the market for his biggest-name clients. I would not bet against him, no matter how absurd he looks to us.

Something to keep in mind: Even if Manny ends up with the same 2 year, $45 million deal the Dodgers originally offered and that he declined, he still made a killing in this market and lost nothing by unsuccessfully holding out for a better deal.

  49. RMS February 27th, 2009 at 9:34 am

  50. Commish February 27th, 2009 at 9:39 am

The deal he turned down has a ton of deferred money in it (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3938665). If I were Boras I’d try to continue to negotiate that too.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yanks are stupid. They should sign him, bat him behind ARod, for the best 3-4-5 in forever, and deal Nady. Manny is the perfect anti-ARod, and he would absorb a lot of attention away from ARod, and also ensure the latter gets actual pitches near the strike zone to hit.

  53. DJ February 27th, 2009 at 11:37 am

Although the single-minded method of Scott Bore’s Ass has been successful in the past, he wasn’t the shining star agent with A-Rod’s last contract and Manny will likely not get a deal equal to the Dodger’s last offer anywhere after the season begins. Of course, those loyal to Bore’s Ass and Manny will put a positive spin on whatever outcome to calm their over-inflated egos, even if Manny would have been paid more just playing out what could have been a final year in LA.

  54. Observer283 February 27th, 2009 at 11:50 am

I think team’s hate bidding against themselves adn so they like calling Boras’ bluff. But it is dangerous. Look at what happened with Tex and the Red Sox. They thought they were calling his bluff, and then he became a Yankee.

Teams have got to be careful when trying to read the Boras BS o-meter.

  55. Adam H, February 27th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

i didn’t think it was possible, but it looks like Boras is handling this worse than he did A-Rod’s free-agency announcement…
