Postgame audio from Joe Girardi

Here’s Joe Girardi’s postgame interview. There were mostly baseball questions (Posada, Bruney, Hughes, Melancon) but a few on A-Rod, the crowd reaction to A-Rod and his cousin. It runs for about seven minutes:

The Associated Press just reported that the Yankees have ordered A-Rod to keep his cousin away from ballparks for the rest of the season.

Said Girardi: “That situation has been addressed and I’ll just leave it at that.”

According to the AP, Rodriguez acknowledged that he made a mistake. His cousin, Yuri Sucart, is the man who smuggled the anabolic steroid Primobolan to the United States from the Dominican Republic from 2001-03.

I’m still surprised by how many people on here yesterday didn’t think this Sucart story was a big deal. Maybe it was a case of simple homerism, or apathy due to overexposure, but there is no way a guy like ARod should be seen anywhere near this dude.

    Santana elbow problems ?

  4. nomas February 26th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Enough is enough, this was not a mistake, it was intentional, Arod doesn’t care about his fans or the Yankees or what MLB thinks. He does what he wants. If it wasn’t for the NY Post calling him out on it, he would have continued bringing his cousin to the game. I used to be a huge fan of his, after his love of needles and steroids, he won’t fool me again.
    Moving on to TEX!

Justin Christian’s not with the Yankees anymore? Looks like he caught on with the O’s. Hit a HR today.

  6. dave February 26th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

wow – 7 baserunners and 5 runs. Imagine if we ever did that in the playoffs. Is that even possible for this team? Im glad to see timely hitting now though. Maybe it will stick.

On the flip side, reading that a lot of fans bood arod when he came to bat and cheered when he grounded into a dp is really just annoying. Its nice to think it was all rays fans but im sure there were a good portion of yankee fans in there, If arod is having a great season in 2009 and the majority of the stadium is booing him consistently, I will be disgusted with the fans.

I really would hope that arod could stop the booing by playing very well this year. And if he cant, its clear that there are a lot of yankee fans out there who would rather root against arod than for the yanks. And what kind of fan is that? Certainly not a yankee fan.

Hes not “some dude” hes family. I have no problem with A-Rod hanging with this guy he is not a roid hound hes just a guy. Now Presinal is a different story that guy is a known dealer.

I think it is pretty clear to me at this point that the goofy, somewhat practiced, insincere guy that we see on camera is no act. He really is this socially awkward and just not “all there.”

People slam him for the stupid things he does because they think that it is a carefully scripted visage that he believes will engraciate himself to the public. Well, I think that is the case, but moreso I think HE thinks it is the right thing to do. Furthermore, I think he honestly doesn’t realize how what he says and what he does comes off to the rest of us. I think he is oblivious to it all.

This has more to do with the obvious reprocussions of his father leaving him and his mom as a kid, his personality, and having Scott Boras be his father figure since he was a teenager.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is no act, this is pathological. It’s as engrained in his psyche as a nicotine is in a pack a day smoker. He honestly doesn’t know how to handle himself like a normal person.

  10. Eric February 26th, 2009 at 4:53 pm

So weird the Yanks would order A-rod to keep his drug mule away from the team, isn’t it Pete? I mean, it’s such a non-story I find it amazing anyone even noticed Yuri was in the parking lot yesterday.

    Thanks for the updates!

  11. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Pete- clearly A-Rod did not read the comment section of your blog yesterday. Why it wasn’t as if he killed someone, drove drunk, hung out with an “actual” drug smuggler, did anything wrong, wasn’t found guilty by a military tribunal in Guantanamo, shot Kennedy, kidnapped the Lindburgh baby, defrauded billions from investors, or jaywalked. What does he have to admit he made a mistake?

Besides, yesterday he was young, naive, and had to live up to a 1/4 billion dollar contract. Plus, he never went to college.

  12. rbj February 26th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Jeez, I still hang out with friends from college (when we can get together), even though we used, um “extralegal” substances back then, and don’t now.

My concern is that baseball, not just A-Rod, be clean from now on. Let’s have more testing, and use blood testing too.

  13. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) February 26th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

    dave,
there was a mix i actually thought the cheers were louder than the boos, its still early to tell how its going to be like, if he plays well though then i dont see why yank fans will boo him, except for an idiot here or there. lol

  14. Michael Kei (Igawa) February 26th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

    Yesterday was a loosey-goosey era

  15. dontfirecash February 26th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

A-Roid has got to be one of the most socially inept people I have ever seen. How does he not realize that getting picked up by his drug smuggling cousin looks terrible?

  16. jennifer February 26th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

If those were Yankee fans that booed Alex than they should be banned from ever attending a Yankee game. Don’t they want to win? If you don’t like him, do nothing. Don’t cheer, don’t boo. I want to win!, I don’t want an emotional basket case on the team, that won’t help the Yankees.

  17. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

    rbj-

Yes, but when you did those things with your college friends you were young and naive and never went to college….um, wait a second…

I’m going with loosey-goosey on that one.

  18. hardwired February 26th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

If his cousin looked like Vida Guerra, I think many of us would be demanding MORE of this story. As it is, please, no mas.

  19. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

I have in my head a vision of the Cashman-ARod chat going down a bit like the scene in “Casino” where Joe Pesci is in the phone booth talking to Robert DeNiro about the guy with the cowboy boots that got kicked out of the casino…

“You did what? You took your boots off and put your feet up on the table, you stinky !@# horse manure smelling m&*#@ $&^#@$ you! You !@#$ me up over there and I’ll stick you in the desert!”

  20. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 26th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

How many times is a player allowed to “make mistakes” a la A-Rod?

I mean, he can’t really be that naive…right?

  21. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 26th, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Alex is just trying to keep the peace, but if it had been me, I would have told Cashman to stuff it. The guy is his cousin. He’s not bringing him stuff anymore. He’s not a convicted criminal. There’s no reason why Alex shouldn’t be allowed to see his family members on or near Yankee property.

  22. Peter Abraham February 26th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

I think people should cut them a break. As Alex said many times, they were so young. After all, he was 26 and his cousin was 41 at the time. They were just kids.

  23. Betsy February 26th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Kay going on about how Alex got fairly poor reception today – he’s surprised and now he’s concerned because he believes if this translates to NY crowds at home, then it’s going to be a big problem for Alex. Apparently Alex got booed after striking out and also after hitting into a double play? Well, he’s always gotten booed after every so-called negative at bat – still, I agree with Kay here (and the crowds will be vicious in NY). This could be a real problem.

  24. Caps February 26th, 2009 at 5:08 pm

He just doesn’t get it, Rebecca. He is a mess.

  25. GreenBeret7 February 26th, 2009 at 5:08 pm

If it was such a big issue, why did the Yanks let Swisher ride with them? Why didn’t they address this before? There was certainly plenty of time for it. Perhaps because the media decided that it was their business.

  26. dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

    Guys,

Will you get off your high horses and just have some perspective for a second? This is not just some drug smuggler – its his cousin who thought taking this stuff would help arod. And drug smuggler sounds like a bit much. Was he taking this stuff in for hundreds of ppl or just for arod and himself? Because drug smugglers often dont smuggle in drugs for two people. I bet everyone who is scraming about this have done something illegal in their lives. Stop judging arods cousin and start watching some baseball. That is why we care about all this anyway – for the baseball.

  27. m February 26th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

    Laura,

Wow. You would tell your boss who will pay over the course of 10 years a total of $300M to stuff it? I suppose you’d tell Girardi and Hank the same thing, too.

  28. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 26th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

“How many times is a player allowed to “make mistakes” a la A-Rod?

I mean, he can’t really be that naive…right?”

As many times as it happens in 9 years, which is how many years Alex will be a Yankee. I don’t happen to see what the big deal is. But with Alex, his mere breathing is apparently cause for alarm around here.

  29. Yankee2123 February 26th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

I think the bigger issue with Arod’s cousin yesterday, is that Swisher was with them. That’s all the Yankees need right now, having players that are considered “Clean”, hanging around with Arod’s Jibrone Cousin.

  30. 7*7 February 26th, 2009 at 5:10 pm

Torre was 100% right about A-Rod

  31. BNORRIS February 26th, 2009 at 5:10 pm

I find this extremely annoying that YANKEE fans are booing a-rod. He did it, he admitted it, he can’t do anything more. If you are a TRUE Yankees fan, you want the best for your team. BOOING a key member of the team is not helping them.

  33. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) February 26th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

lol pete, watch out now the “be quiet you hate arod” statements will be out in full force.

  34. m February 26th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

    dave,

This isn’t the point. Alex paused, what 38 seconds, to tell his teammates, “Thank you”? Then he can’t even keep a low profile.

The fewer distractions the better. Not for Alex’s sake, for the teams.

You think they like hearing this crap and dealing with it?

And don’t blame the media, blame A-rod. He’s the one that keeps doing and saying lame stuff.

  35. Red Dragons February 26th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

If he is getting a 50/50 reception at Legends Field from the retirees and laid-back Florida crowd…. then Yankee Stadium is going to be brutal.

I’m sure he’ll get cheered initially, but if he Ks or grounds into a DP, he is going to get it.

  37. rodg12 February 26th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Oh great, another great game ruined by needless discussion about ARod and his cousin. Get over it.

  38. Al February 26th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

    m,

He paused for 38 seconds because he tried to manufacture tears. It didn’t happen, unfortunately for him.

  39. Peter Abraham February 26th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Laura: You sure he’s not a convicted criminal? You sure he’s not still obtaining drugs? So many things Alex has said became unraveled upon closer examination. I’d be careful about showing blind faith in any of these sorts of situations. There are many, many PEDs out there that are undetectable.

Dave: Primobolan is illegal without a prescription in the DR and in the USA (where it is illegal, period, with or without a prescription). This guy obtained the drugs and took them to the United States, obviously by evading customs and law enforcement. If that is not drug smuggling, then what is exactly?

  40. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 26th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

dave: It’s not a high horse.

It’s a question of how many times are you allowed to skirt the consequences of your actions?

There are some that will argue that the shame of being named is consequence enough, but Alex isn’t getting suspended when any other average major league player would have to sit fifty games and whatnot.

For all the talk of Alex’s legacy being tarnished, he’s still making more in a single game than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes.

Forgive me if I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy.

That said, when Alex does well I will certainly cheer him because it bodes well for the team. I’ll just have to hope that he’s doing it cleanly.

  41. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 26th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

“I’m sure he’ll get cheered initially, but if he Ks or grounds into a DP, he is going to get it.”

How is this different from how he’s been treated since the first day he put on pinstripes?

  42. dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

The worst thing is not that yankee fans are booing arod when he comes to the plate but then, cheering when he grounds into a double play if those were yankee fans. I cant imagine a true fan would rather cheer against arod then for the yankees afterall that was a yankee making two outs. And some yankee fan is going to cheer for that and still claim they like the yankees? Thats unbelievable to me. I cannot even fathom that. Are people really THAT dumb?

  43. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Drug= loosely defined, a chemical substance that when ingested and absorbed into the body alters the normal bodily function.

Smuggler= someone who imports or exports without paying duties or who carries contraband.

    Cousin = drug smuggler.

If I kill someone, I am still a murderer. Even though I’ve killed one person. If I kill lots of people, I am a “mass” murderer.

  44. Yankee2123 February 26th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

    Arod gets everything he deserves.

  45. Gardner for CF February 26th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I can’t see A-Rod taking it well that his GM told him not to see his cousin. Pretty curious move by Brian— ARod’s psyche is fragile as it is. There was no reason to add additional stress to his life. Maybe thats why he grounded into a DP and struck out.

  46. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) February 26th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

idiots booed alex before this during the season at yankee stadium and have countless times, thats never going to change. all i can hope for is that the cheers outweigh the booes. even if its just slightly.

    from rotoworld.com:

“Takashi Saito struck out two in a scoreless inning against the Pirates on Thursday.

Saito hasn’t had any issues in camp as he attempts to pitch with a partially torn elbow ligament. If he can stay healthy, the Red Sox just might have the game’s best bullpen. ”

    ugh

    Al,

It’s amazing how many national analysts fell for it. Really amazing.

  50. Yankee2123 February 26th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

There were also alot of Rays fans there at the park that were booing him. Personally, I hope he’s booed out of NY.

  51. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 26th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

  52. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

The reason I boo’d ARod was because I was young and naive and didn’t go to college. It was so loosey goosey in the stands.

  53. dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

but the way people say drug smuggler pete makes him sound like this is his job. This guy likely took the drugs in for himself and his cousin. Im sure he is not the first to take drugs back into the country for one or two people either. It is drug smuggling but i dont know if i would go so far as to call him a drug smuggler every time i refer to him in a sentence. But i guess its your choice.

  54. Betsy February 26th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Too bad we can’t talk about baseball – I hope there will be another baseball thread later on.

GreenBeret, did the Yankees know that Alex was getting a ride with his cousin? If they did, then I don’t know what Cash is getting so upset about; if they didn’t, then I can understand. It’s fine with me if the Yankees don’t want the cousin around the ballpark – it’s too much of a distraction for Alex and the team.

The Swisher thing is absolutely ridiculous – seriously, do people really think Nick is a steroid risk?

    Interesting stuff from Kay:

He talked about how Alex said “hello, Michael” to him, but when he (Kay) made a move to shake his hand, Alex sort of avoided it….

Suzyn Waldman apparently told Alex that she has been very harsh on him and she wanted him to know that, that perhaps she has been too disappointed in him. He said he was disappointed in himself….and that was that. No big fireworks, but obviously things will be rather awkward if Michael or Suzyn have to interview Alex after a game.

  55. Jerzz February 26th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

The Selena Roberts book will add even more insight into A-Rod’s curious life and associations.

That is the true eye of this storm. Especially if it contains more info or expounds on things that A-Rod said but left out details.

  58. dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:21 pm

Rusty – so you are comparing bringing steroids into the country for two people to killing someone and asking if one is a murder isnt the other a drug smuggler? Umm that is not exactly the best comparison. But you are making my point for me – this thing is getting far far too overblown and has been since the day the news broke. Everything written appears to be exaggerated/

  59. Yankee2123 February 26th, 2009 at 5:21 pm

I can only hope the announcers ride his rear end the whole year. I hope he chokes the entire year, and leaves NY in shame, he’s not worthy! He needs to follow Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown, and all of the other posers who can’t handle the “Big City.”

  60. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 26th, 2009 at 5:21 pm

Boston Dave: I still take the Yankee pen over the Sox pen any day of the week with Girardi managing.

Seriously, our bullpen last year was _good_, and it looks like it’s only going to get better.

Then again, it’s always more fun to be the underdog…

  61. dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

the only reason a yankee fan would cheer when arod grounds into a dp is because they are just dumb. That is the only excuse if that is an excuse.

  62. Soul February 26th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Brian, Joe, and Hank all showing A-Rod tough love. That is the way it should be.

  63. dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

rusty – if you boo a yankee consistently and cheer when he hurts the team would you consider yourself a yankee fan? I wouldnt.

  64. Peter Abraham February 26th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Laura: He gets the benefit of the doubt based on what? All the times he has told the truth about this situation? He has lied every time.

Betsy: They had no idea the cousin was driving him to the game. They were furious when they found out via the media. With the MLB investigators around, it was an incredibly bad move.

  65. Boston Dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

    for the record:

I guess I’m a drug smuggler too. I don’t have health insurance right now so I order anything I need from New Zealand circumventing the ridiculous prescription system in the U.S.

Let’s not try to claim that ARod’s cousin isn’t a drug smuggler. Let’s make it clear how meaningless that title is.

Anybody can find a doctor to prescribe anything if they really want to. It doesn’t make it right, it’s just silly to blame the people using instead of the people who allow it.

We can argue all we want. There are so many people to blame for every aspect of this that it’s just silly to constantly try to pin the blame on one man.

  66. Mike R February 26th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

At least now Alex doesn’t have to wonder why he is getting booed. He was booed anyway, but it was usually for no good reason.

    Maybe it’s better this way.

  67. Yankee2123 February 26th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

  68. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

    dave

No- I am pointing out that you have obvious difficulty inunderstanding what words mean. If someone brings illicit drugs into the country illegally, they are a drug smuggler. It is that simple. If I kill someone I am a murderer. That is not that same as drug smuggling equals murder. It is used as an illustration that words have plain and simple meanings sometimes and just because you don’t like the way they sound, or want to interpret them differently to excuse his behavior, doesn’t mean they don’t mean the things they do. Hence, my later reference to bed wetting.

  69. DT February 26th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Did Nick Swisher get benched today? Was it a punishment?

I can’t believe he got in the car with an admitted drug user and drug smuggler. What was he thinking??? What a sad sad mistake. Hanging out with the wrong crowd.

I’m afraid he just bought a one way ticket out of town. There is no recovery from this. Dang, I really like Swish.
    :-(

  70. Michael February 26th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Arod is by far the dumbest human on this planet. How could he be soooo stupid as to have his cuz pick him up and make the news with this crap. I want him off this team so bad. There is no way he sees the end of his contract in New York. I read Jies book and fell back in like with him. It is the company he worked for that screwed up. Bringing back Arod after opting out WOW How dumb was that.

  71. Boston Dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

    Rebecca,

I totally agree. The Sox bullpen is more like the Yankees pen of the past 5 years or so. Lot’s of “if’s” and bigger name guys who “just need to pitch like they used to” in order to be great.

Now that the Yankees have built their pen the right way IMO, they’re not getting any respect because they aren’t relying on as many big name veterans to just “pitch like they used to”.

  72. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

    Boston Dave-

Yes, according to the law, you are doing something illegal. In Washington State if you even have a single prescription pill on you without a valid prescription it is a felony. That is the law in most other states.

As Pete already pointed out, this is a substance that is not legal with or without a prescription in the US.

By the way, if you go from doctor to doctor to shop for drugs, or if a doctor writes a script for drugs that aren’t needed, that is a crime too. So your point is what, exactly?

If you want to argue that ARods behavior should not be criminalized, that is one thing. If you want to take potshots at Pete because he describes a person accurately, that is another.

    ————————————————————

I can only assume that Giradri knew about it, because he OK’d them riding back in a car, and somebody had to allow that car to get to the player’s entrance. Whether Cashman knew or not, I don’t know. Even still, he’s had two weeks to put the word out to Rodriguez and others than the cousin wasn’t allowed in the security area.

As far as Kay, goes, too bad. He’s been trashing Rodriguez for a month or longer, and know can’t figure out why he won’t shake his hand? For his own peace of mind, Rodriguez needs to refuse all interviews with the media. He’s not going to win, either way. He also needs to start wearing earplugs during his at bats.

    Rebecca,

I believe the Yankees had the 5th best pen last year (quoting someone who posted that here a few days ago). Consider the starting pitching last year and how many extra innings the pen had to throw.

Even if they aren’t any better this year they’d stand to improve based solely on the much improved rotation.

The Sox pen is surely improved but until they dot all the i’s and cross the t’s on the field, I don’t think they deserve all the praise they’re getting.

  75. Bronx Jeers February 26th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

I wouldn’t label the guy a “drug smuggler” I mean he’s not exactly in scarface territory but how A-Rod has this guy drive him to the park is incomprehensible.

The Yanks are totally in the right demanding that they not see this guy anywhere near their operation.

If I were Cashman I would have tore ARod a new one.

  76. Lisa February 26th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

This quote from the NY Times, Tyler Kepner says it best when referring to Alex’s cousin picking Alex up after the game.

“Alex Rodriguez employs a startling number of advisers and image consultants. Yet he continues to do things that defy common sense.”

  77. Laura - Standing behind Alex! February 26th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

“Laura: He gets the benefit of the doubt based on what? All the times he has told the truth about this situation? He has lied every time.”

Pete, this is where I differ from everyone else around here. I’m not shocked or surprised that he lied. That’s what people do when they do something wrong. Did anyone really think he was supposed to tell Katie Couric that he used during that interview? How can anyone be shocked that he didn’t open up that can of worms right then and there?

I’ve told you before that I think the media attention is beyond ludicrous and is hypocritical to the highest order. My opinion on that isn’t likely to change this century. Until Alex gets busted red handed again, I’m not going to spend my time trashing him like everyone else. He’s a Yankee, maybe one of the most important players we have. I’ll back him until he gives me a reason not to.

  78. Boston Dave February 26th, 2009 at 5:32 pm

    RustyJohn,

you missed the point. not my problem. i suggest you skip to a simpler post.

  79. Doreen February 26th, 2009 at 5:33 pm

I seriously doubt anyone told ARod to stay away from his cousin. There is absolutely nothing wrong with telling Alex his cousin is not welcome at any ballpark. The Yankees pay ARod an awful lot of money. I think he can do this. And I’m sure they handled it all in a very adult, polite manner.

    Appearances do, in fact, matter.

  80. Rishi February 26th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Doreen – i believe they did that today :)

  81. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Um, I don’t think that anyone is saying Nick Swisher and ARod were shooting up in the van with ARod’s cousin or how people don’t realize how this can cause problems for the team’s image and for ARod himself while he is being investigated by MLB and the Feds. Is it really that hard for people to fathom that, when facing possible criminal investigations, sanctions by MLB or your employer, it isn’t a good idea to “hang” with the same person you did the illegal act you are being investigated for? And bring that person to your place of employment?

Question- if you got stoned while at work and, while high, did something that attracted the cops to investigate your employer, and your boss asked you, “Why are you stoned?” and you replied, “I smoked some stuff with my cousin”, would your boss have reason for concern if the next week you showed up at work with your cousin again? How about if you took another employee with you and your cousin?

How about if 1/4 of the people at that place of employment were using drugs, selling drugs, or trading drugs and the government came to the factory/store/shop whatever and told the employer- “You better clean up your act here or we’re going to shut you down.” And then, a week later, here you come again with your drug dealing cousin to work- knowing that everybody- the boss, the government, regulatory agencies, etc were watching you…you’re saying that your boss wouldn’t be upset? Doesn’t have the right to be upset? Or that other people who work there or who have an interest in the company wouldn’t be upset?

What planet do you people live on?

  82. RustyJohn February 26th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

    BostonDave-

Sorry, I’ll take my master’s degree in criminology, juris doctorate and LLM elsewhere. sorry to dumb down the conversation.

  83. GreenBeret7 February 26th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Sorry, Rusty, but, I quit reading any BS that starts wth “Ummm”.

  84. Peter Abraham February 26th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Cashman and Girardi had no idea Sucart was driving Alex. It was the first away game. They assumed, wrongly, that he wouldn’t do something like that.

As one team official said today, “Remember when he said he was young and stupid? At least half of that was correct.”

  85. Joey's Poodle February 26th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

I’m not so sure he’s stupid. He’s acting more like a passive-aggressive teenager who will play out every possible variation on his provoking, self-destructive scenario while smirkingly saying, ‘But you didn’t tell me I couldn’t do THAT’.

  86. Yankeefan February 26th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Did anyone think he was gonna stop seeing his family member anyway? sometimes i wonder who the real id*ots are.

    YOU Yankeefan.

    YOU.

It still seems as Joe G. still doesn’t like to be pressed on things. I hope his new attitude toward the meeting has not already lapsed.

  89. Burnett after reading February 26th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

“There are some that will argue that the shame of being named is consequence enough, but Alex isn’t getting suspended when any other average major league player would have to sit fifty games and whatnot.”

Probably the dumbest thing I have ever read on this post in a long while. No major league player found in the Mitchell report has faced any suspension nor has anyone found guilty of steroid use before 2004.

-”Get some facts and then come and see me”

  90. Boston Dave February 26th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

    RustyJohn,

Ok Dr Phil. I don’t care if you are a PhD or a high school dropout. If you can’t understand simple concepts…

  91. GGTM February 26th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

I once supported A-Rod through thick and thin … but since the steroid business and now that I see that he doesn’t seem to be able to think rationally … he is driving his most ardent supporters insane! We should paint the words I’m with stupid on Jeter’s jersey and have a finger pointing towards third base. I truly believe this man just doesn’t have a clue!

  92. Chris February 26th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Ugh – this steroid talk continues. The players do not have credibility on the issue b/c of the lies. The media has no credibility b/c they dropped the ball by not reporting on the issue from 1986 on forward – it is an indictment of journalism. The fans too have no credibility b/c we blindly showed up and watched the games as the muscles grew bigger and the homeruns went up. And the union, mlb commish, and owners just cared about rising salaries and profits.

  93. RMS February 26th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Alex has no common sense and/or his advisers are stupid. He should know every move he makes is being watched and reported. So, he has his drug smuggler cousin pick him up. Stupid move.

At Yankee stadium, I think he will be booed the first time he does not get a clutch hit.

  94. able 21 February 26th, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Alex does seem to lack common sense.

The last two weeks doesn’t really excuse the family first school of thought.

I don’t buy the he’s in a no win situation.

  98. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 26th, 2009 at 9:37 pm

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is no act, this is pathological. It’s as engrained in his psyche as a nicotine is in a pack a day smoker. He honestly doesn’t know how to handle himself like a normal person.”

lol, armchair psychologist/psychiatrists are just as amusing as the all the WebMD’s that show up around here when a player gets injured.

  99. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing February 26th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

I’m also wondering if A-Rod makes up words – seeing as he’s deemed so pathological by someone who Knows.

Cause that’s the kind of things that pathological people do, right? Like “reprocussions” (repercussions), “ingraciate” (ingratiate) and “engrained” (ingrained).

Gotta love hooked-on-phonics-spelled and invented words, lol.

    *************************************************************

See, I don’t actually blame him for that. I think considering the position MK is in, his reactions and railings on this situation were rather unprofessional and a tad melodramatic – much like a spoiled child who found out the tooth fairy isn’t real.

I *get* the disappointment in A-Rod he clearly feels. However, I think that in his position/profession – especially as a YES broadcaster and play-by-play man, he doesn’t have the luxury of indulging in such a reaction – certainly not in his professional capacity anyway.

  101. Tex's New Best Friend February 26th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

It was dumb on a-rod considering he blamed his cousin for the ped’s.

however you idiots who want him to fail cannot call yourself yankee fans. if he fails, the team fails. It is absolutely ridiculous to say you hope he chokes all year and gets run out of ny.

  102. more baseball, less bs February 26th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Has Pettitte’s father been banned from the ballpark as well?
I love my team, but this seems a bit silly. They welcomed Leyritz into the clubhouse after he killed a woman. How many chances did Strawberry get? This guy is his cousin – from the sounds of it, a very close family member. Just lay off A-Rod and let him play baseball. We could all benefit from that.
