Alex Rodriguez heard some boos early then made some noise of his own with a two-run homer that helped the Yankees beat the Blue Jays. A-Rod then left the park with his controversial cousin. Reggie Jackson also weighed in on the situation.

The Yankees set their rotation for the spring. This notebook also has updates on Jose Veras and Brett Tomko.

this theory about not letting a pitcher increase his IP from one year to the next by more than 30 IP applies to the minors as well as the majors from what i’ve read

andy pettite 91-92 increased his IP by 99 innings

from 95-96 roy halladay increased his IP by 114 IP

from 99-2000 barry zito increased his IP by 120IP

from 98-99 cc sabathia increased his IP by 78IP

from 2005-2006 chien-ming wang jumped 68 innings (and won 19 games)

    let the big man pitch!

“A-Rod then left the park with his controversial cousin”

Did you ever get the feeling that A-Rod is more than a few hits short of a cycle.

If stupid is as does then this guy is just a flat out moron.

Either that or he is just addicted to bad press. What’s the saying? No such thing as bad press?

  4. carl February 26th, 2009 at 7:46 am

It’s his cousin. Sounds like a loyal cousin. It’s not his cousin’s fault A-rod wanted to do steroids.

  5. Chien-Ming Vase February 26th, 2009 at 7:51 am

arod is a media whore just like his g/f

  6. Ryan February 26th, 2009 at 7:53 am

I think people need to get off A’s Rod. He makes filthy money, He did steroids, He sleeps around with strippers and he’s gonna hit HR’s. Everyone knocks him but would kill to be him. I wonder how long Arod hanging out with his cousin is gonna be news, Im sure he doesn’t give a rats ass cuz he’s still hanging out with him.

  7. TurnTwo February 26th, 2009 at 7:55 am

*It’s his cousin. Sounds like a loyal cousin. It’s not his cousin’s fault A-rod wanted to do steroids.*

and ARod cant win either way.

he keeps is cousin around, he’s stupid is as stupid does, never learned his lesson, blah, blah, blah.

but if he dumps the cousin, he’s disloyal to his right-hand man and a fraud who doesnt care about anyone who’s close to him except himself, he’ll always be ’24+1,’ yada, yada, yada.

all i care about is that he hit a HR, and the Yanks are finally playing some baseball.

Brett Tomko = Dick Tidrow ?

  9. Mitchell February 26th, 2009 at 7:58 am

His “controversial” cousin? Well, at least we’re not smearing him with the “drug smuggler” label right now, so there’s a bit of an improvement.

Guy is keeping with his family – and that’s called bad. And when he plays with celebrities like Madonna, that’s bad (like we care about the his marriage). And when he hires the best lawyers to protect him from congressional inquiries, that’s bad also. And when he was sunning himself in the park with his wife, that was bad. I get the feeling that the fourth estate and the Schadenfreude NY-ers really enjoy A-Rod. Oh yeah, that seems about right to me. LOL.

It’s a nice touch when holier-than-thou blogs sell ad space to such fine upstanding establishments as Leather and Lace. Really sets the tone for pronouncing judgments. Yep, that’s a really nice touch.

Personally, I prefer the Leather and Lace ad to the “belly fat” one, which always spoils my breakfast.

If ARod started shunning his cousin now after hanging around with him right up until last year it might indicate to someone that he must’ve still been using in ’08. By keeping him around it might create the appearance that Alex has nothing to hide or be ashamed of by associating with him.

Besides, I hear his cousin is as loyal as it gets and blood is thicker than the cream or the clear.

  12. John in Ohio February 26th, 2009 at 8:03 am

    Uh…that’s Lace and Stiletto

I looked again, just to be sure.

    John in Ohio

It’s good to be sure on that…
In fact, you might want to be positive about it…
Better check again, you know, just to verify.

    lol

I don’t think ARod should “shun” his cousin, but I think a little discretion is warranted here. There is such a thing as keeping a low profile, and I think that would be the smartest thing at least until after his hearing with MLB.

I’m tired of ARod – or, rather, I’m tired of all this “stuff” surrounding ARod.

I’m looking forward to catching the end of the game today. I’ll be out for the beginning. I hope I’m home in time to see Melancon pitch.

It will be nice to have baseball back.

  15. Thomas Robust February 26th, 2009 at 8:14 am

Gardner had a nice homerun yesterday, but what he needs to show off is his speed and control in center. If he can run the bases and hits for decent ave. the Yankees will be forced to give him the job, and the Yankees want to give it to him they need those steals. Rodriguez going with his cousin is not surprising, they’re cousins and good friends. From what I read I didn’t see that Cano got more patience, he has to improve that, I sure hope Long noticed and talked to him about it. If Aceves puts up good numbers he should get the long relief job, no matter what Tomko does. Good Luck to them all. Have a great day. (added by Mobile using Mippin)

despite having more advisors than the president, arod is making moves as if he was taking advice from pete rose.

  17. phil of philont February 26th, 2009 at 8:20 am

gotta wonder about swisher now, he’s hanging out with a known user and a known supplier.

  18. pat February 26th, 2009 at 8:22 am

It is darned if he does, darned if he doesn’t. He appears with him in public, it looks bad. He sees him in private, an unnamed source will see them together and it will be reported he’s sneaking around with him.

I’m not an advocate of cutting off friends and family for appearance sake (Derek did hang with Roger in Texas on national TV) but Alex needs to let the mania calm down and needs to keep that in mind in all choices he makes.

Can you imagine the insanity if Alex had come out and extolled the virtues of Presinal in the same way other athletes did or if his personal assistant was charged with identity theft of a jailed drug dealer? Peoples heads would have exploded!

  19. Mitchell February 26th, 2009 at 8:22 am

Not Leather and Lace? Lace and Stiletto? Huh, looks like I have to go do some investigative reporting to see what’s going on in there. I’ll report back diligently on any smears that I find.

    Or …

Baseball ! Let’s talk about baseball instead ! Yeah, that’s the ticket.

this obstructed view situation in the bleachers is a joke.

plenty of other stadiums have OF restaurants without creating rows and rows of unusable seats. they had to put the restaurant right up to the field so that the richies can eat dinner there and still have a better view than the poor schlubs who can only afford to go to a couple of games and can only afford the bleachers.

this shows the blatant disregard the yankees have for the average guy (i.e. the taxpayer who is fooing the financing for the stadium in the first place)

this is a rich boy’s playground, the filthy masses need not apply.

So apparently everyone should stay away from Alex as if he were a leper?

  22. Jeremy February 26th, 2009 at 9:08 am

The reactions to the Sucart story have become a parody of the ARod-PED saga.

The way commenters are writing about this, it’s as if ARod has two choices: have Sucart pick him up from ST games and face media scrutiny, or walk home from games and never see his cousin again.

ARod can afford to hire a car service. His cousin does not have to be the one to pick him up. At the same time, he can see his cousin without bringing him in front of all the reporters staked out at Steinbrenner Field.

Pete’s point is fair. Bringing Sucart onto Yankee property is not a good idea. That’s not the same as saying ARod can never see him again.
