Yankees try on a new hat

Peter Abraham
February
26

If you ask me (and nobody did), the Yankees should not screw around with their hats. There is no need for a patch on the back of the hat for the new Stadium considering there will also be a patch on the uniform.

At any rate, here is now the hats will look this season:

The patch itself doesn’t look too bad, it’s just so gigantic.

  2. sierchio

I agree Pete.. Leave the hat alone. It’s overkill having two patches and it looks horrible on the back of that hat.

  3. rodg12

Can’t believe MLB let them take the MLB logo off the hat.

  4. Rock em Sock em Robots

Agreed. At some point it becomes overkill. Just keep a simple patch on the sleeve and leave the cap alone. But from a marketing/merchandising perspective, its a way for the Yankees to sell a few more hats to people who already had perfectly good Yankee hats and now will need to go out and purchase the special 2009 hat.

  5. Y26

Hey– Atleast it’s not the Mets inaugural patch.

  6. Rock em Sock em Robots

Pete, is that design really going to be the hat for the whole year? Or is it just something that will be used for the first homestand?

  7. Nettles Punched Bill Lee

    Gross.

Nice….but not on a Yankee cap.

  8. Statsney

I think the hat looks fine. I mean if you want to see an ugly hat look at the mets one with that dominos citi field logo.

  9. Ryan

    Whole season

  10. Peter Abraham

All year. I think it’s awful.

  11. dave

    Matt,
I didnt saying the media is doing steroids … I say they are using steroids meaning they are using steroids to sell papers and fill up air time. And the talk about none of us ever knowing who did what and all of the records being meaningless in this era and how horrible these players are for using is killing the sport far more than the actual players doing it hurt the sport. If the era was covered how it should be without all of the extra hype and over the top criticism – the sport would actually be in far better shape than the downward tailspin it seems to be heading in now. Im sure selena’s book and the uncovering of the 103 other names coming out will just be fuel to this already catastrophic train wreck. iF STEROIDS is covered more than the actual games while the season is going on, you know there is a problem here.

  12. Much Ado about Something

Its marketing for people who want to have a relatively cheap item that commemorates the opening of the new stadium. Its not like this will be the hat forever after. It can only be for this one season at the most, and may not be used by them in games.

The Red Sox came up with their design changes to get more sales. This is mild when compared to those moves.

Some fans will ignore it and keep with the standard. Others will buy it for history sake. No big deal in my eyes.

  13. dave

The bottom one with the logo in back isnt bad but the top one is ugly IMO.

  14. Jermaine D'Twan Monroe-Gibbons

rodg12- they didn’t take the mlb logo off the hat, they just changed the color of it, take a look between the 2009.

  15. RalphieD (for free sports betting look here http://www.centsports.com/?opcode=317843)

why didnt they put it on the side like a all star game hat or world series

  16. Buddy Biancalana

    It’s all about the Benjamins!

  17. dave

I mean if they just had the bottom it would be ok but the front is ugly.

Can’t believe MLB let them take the MLB logo off the hat.”

The MLB logo is incorporated in the design of that patch on the back.

  19. Rock em Sock em Robots

Much Ado….good point, its totally something I could see a family member or friend of a Yankee fan purchasing for them as a gift b/c it commemorates the new stadium.

Thanks for the quick answer Pete, you’re a Man of the People!

  20. rodg12

My bad. Thanks for point that out Jermaine and Much Ado.

  21. JF

What the heck does 59FIFTY even mean?

  22. Much Ado about Something

    “dave February 27th, 2009 at 12:10 am

I mean if they just had the bottom it would be ok but the front is ugly.”

So you don’t like the normal Yankee hat design then? The front is the standard design.

  23. Steve M

Pete, who is making the road trip tomorrow??? Just the scrubs I assume.

  24. Rock em Sock em Robots

“I mean if they just had the bottom it would be ok but the front is ugly.”

“What the heck does 59FIFTY even mean?”

Thats just the New Era tag/label. You just peel it off. Its not going to be on the player’s hats for the game.

  25. Casanova Wong

The thing on the front bill is a sticker 59fifty puts on all their hats

  26. Much Ado about Something

    “JF February 27th, 2009 at 12:14 am

What the heck does 59FIFTY even mean?”

That just looks like the sticker from the manufacturer on the bill of the hat.

  27. MikeEff

i hate it too–the one things the yanks always did right was never changing the unis etc…this is just too much, at least it’s only for a year.

  28. Jaewon Shaquami III

    THATS SO DUMB

  29. Scott

59 + 50 = 109, which is the number of years the Yankees franchise has existed.

We started in 1900 and its 2009 this year….

  30. dave

Oh i thought the sticker on the front was part of the new design on the front and not removable. That hat is pretty nice then. I like it. Its not all that different and the design is completely on the back anyway.

  31. GreenBeret7

Did you guys read the ad headline at the top of the last page? “We Delete Members Unfit To Date”. LMAO.

I thought it might have been a threat that we were all gonna get bumped off by the Media Mafia.

  32. Much Ado about Something

Dave, I can understand now why you didn’t like it. If that was on the bill of the hat all the time it would look pretty lame.

Most times you won’t even see the patch on the back, unless its on some kid who wears the hat backwards, anyway. ;)

  33. Rock em Sock em Robots

Not crazy about the hat but as long as the Yankee uniforms don’t come to someday resemble those hideous NASCAR driver suits than I can live with a little patch on the jersey sleeve and back of the cap.

  34. dave

i really dont think it matters – people who like it will buy it and people who dont, wont buy it and can buy the other ones. No?

  35. dave

I dunno why they would leave the sticker on the hat in an advertisement. Might as well take it off i would think

  36. GreenBeret7

It’s just a patch on the hat. No different from the ones on last year’s and this year’s jersey sleeves. They’re souvenirs. It’s not like they went to green hats or purple pinstripes.

  37. dave

I just find out my so called season tickets at the stadium are one of the ones with the completely obstructed view in the bleachers. So we got moved from the third base line in the main section to the completely obstructed bleacher seats in god knows where. The price went down but instead of chairs we are on backless stools and instead of watching the game on the field, we will be watching them on monitors or the big tv screen unless that is obstructed too of course. I THINK I AM GOING TO PASSSSSSSS. Lonn trost is so kind to lower the price to five dollars but if i want to be uncomfortable and watch the game on an hd, I can sit on the floor in my room and stare up at my tv. Why do i feel like they were trying to use me?

  38. Giuseppe Franco

    No, Scott.

59Fifty has nothing to do with the years the Yanks have been in existence.

59Fifty is the model of the “official” MLB cap. It’s the very same model for every club and has been for years.

  39. Giuseppe Franco

BTW, there is also the 39Thirty model which is the official MLB cap used during BP and Spring Training.

  40. Brandon (CC/AJ/Marky Mark..4 DAYS& PEDS !) Atleast I'm not GreenBeret7

Holybatcrap batman ! that stuff is enormous ! 8O

please shrink the patch, I don’t need to be able to read the patch from the last row in the upper deck one day.

  41. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here

    Not loving the hat

  42. m

    The front looks nice.

The patch on the back is just way too big. But at least the bleacher creatures will be able to read it.

I don’t think that Gardner will complain about the patch.

    What’s on tap for tomorrow?

  43. Johnny

Aww heck, I love the hat!!

  44. Clare

I like the patch. And it’s on the back of the head, it’s not like it ruins the look.

  45. AJ YANKS

    mel,

Swisher, Nady, Gardner, Melky, and Posada will be in the lineup. Kennedy will pitch, folowed by Brackman.

  46. Corey

The patch isnt bad at all….I think it looks much better on the back than it does on the side. I really hate side hat patches
    http://neweracaptalk.com/blog/.....kees-1.jpg

That looks much busier to me

  47. Corey

Looking at the hat on its own doesnt look spectacular…..but i think it looks quite alright on derek jeters head with the entire uniform…

    http://bombersbeat.mlblogs.com.....0Jeter.jpg

  48. vinny-b

    UGLY.

maybe if they bring back the baby blues, i will pull for the Royals.

  49. Corey

    welp that link didnt work…..

    http://bombersbeat.mlblogs.com.....9_cap.html

  50. Mike R

They probably could have made the patch a little bit smaller.

  51. Bronx Jeers

    Horrendous! Once again.

    Yanks should know better.

    Tradition? Hello?

Yanks will be printing their own money by May 1st.

  52. m

    AJ Yanks,

    Thanks for that.

  53. Boston Dave

it’s not a huge deal. the only hats I care about are World Series champs hats.

I’m still in shock over the Manny news. nobody is going to top that offer. wow…

  54. Boston Dave

    that’s pretty funny – the 59 + 50 thing

  55. JoshWhite

I’m huge on Yankee tradition. I don’t think this violates those rules in anyway. They do patches all the time. It’s not like the hat is a different color or they changed the NY like the league did on the 4th of July and 911.

    I’d buy this hat.

  56. pat

A patch on the back doesn’t bother me. It’s better than the ugly red/white/blue NY logo hats from last year.

  57. Andrea

    That is LARGE!

  58. Andrea

I’ll agree with someone above though. It looks less busy than the side patch, now that I look at it. It just seems so BIG.

  59. crawdaddie

I don’t understand the big deal as it’s nothing more than a marketing idea to sell more Yankee hats. I have more than one Yankee hat and might buy this one too.

  60. Count of Montefusco

    This really pisses me off.

Messing w/ the uniforms could turn into a slippery slope, even in increments…I dread the day they introduce an “alternative” road jersey.

Some things are not supposed to be messed with.

  61. Yankee2123

    It’s all about selling hats.

  62. Mark

Uniform sleeves for one year – - yes.

    Hats – - – NEVER.

  63. jennifer

I don’t necessarily think this was all the Yankees idea. I’d bet that MLB had a huge say in it. As someone already pointed out it is all about the ole mighty dollar. They see a cash cow in the new stadium, and will look to bilk every penny out of Yankee fans.

  64. Jeremy

Jennifer’s right. The patch is ugly, but releasing a new official Yankee cap means a lot of sales. That explanation also works for those hideous ST caps with white lines on the side.

  65. drew

A hats a hats a hat….who cares. Its just like the jersey doesnt matter whats on the back….on the front is what matters.

  66. rodney

LAME! Just another marketing ploy to push caps on unwitting, well meaning yankee fans

  67. Brian from PA

I don’t mind when they put stuff on the hats. If you ask me it makes it a nice collector’s item. You’re not going to be able to get that during any other season. Imagine in like, 2065, someone will break out their 2009 inaugural season hat to impress his buddies.

I’ll probably get it. I have the 6 caps with the WS patches (96, 98-2001, 03), last year’s cap with the final season patch and one with the ASG patch which I am currently wearing.

  68. Joe (NY)

Presuming they make the playoffs, will they have a patch in the back and a patch on the side at the same time?

  69. Aaron

It would look better on the side.

  70. Crosetti

All this craz idea by a marketing genius will soon be defeated by the common sense reflected in downsizing sales figures by mid-May.

Yankees fans will have back our good old, classic cap and the genius will be sent through the 10th-floor window.

    Marketing craps!

  71. john

It’s an interesting concept, especially if they make the World Series and have 2 patches on the hat

  72. Tank

The patch should be on the side of the cap just like all the others: All Star Game, World Series, US Flag, etc.

The inaugural logo itself is really, really nice.

I agree with you 100%. Thank you for being a fan and not a whining nitpicker. I have the same collection going plus the 2003 100th anniversary and of course, the current cap in question.
This is a once in a lifetime event for the Yankees (and all fans of baseball round the world) and it should be commemorated with a patch in my opinion. And furthermore I believe that the Yankees are the ONLY organization that would be able to justify such a patch being that they are a historic staple of baseball. The House That Ruth Built was an behemoth of a ballpark when it opened, probably scaring the sh*t out of opposing teams as they entered for the first time to 70,000+ screaming New York fans. Leaving those hallowed grounds to play in a new field is and should be commemorated.
As for putting a patch on their hat as well as the jersey and putting it on the back vs the side… not every fan who displays their love of the Yankees can put on a jersey with the patch every day as we want to (some of us cant even afford the authentic jersey, tickets are enough of a financial burden), but you can put on your Yankee fitted. And as Tank mentioned, when they make it to the WS, they will need the side for that patch to be affixed (that’s a cap I will be picking up too). I look forward to one day taking my first born son (no serious plans for kids yet) to his first game while we’re both wearing our Inaugural Season caps.
Bottom Line… in my opinion, it’s better to offer a commemorative cap than not. If they didn’t, there would be fans complaining about not selling one. And more so… no one is being forced to buy one, there are no limitations on those who choose not to buy/wear it, so why make such a big fuss in the first place.
P.S. Did you all complain about the Final Season patches too?
P.S.S. I’m sure the players feel pride in being the first to take the field in the new stadium and will be keeping a few to keep in their own collections.

    LETS GO YANKEES

  74. Yay

    !!!

  75. PDM

I wholeheartedly agree with the two previous posts. I can’t believe all these guys who are so worked up, complaining about the inaugural logo on the the cap – you stodgy old farts!! Loosen up a little, will ya? How often do they build a new stadium?? Of course they needed to do something big to commemorate it!! I just picked up one of the on-field fitted caps with both the Inaugural patch on the back and the World Series patch on the side, and it looks great. It’s my favorite of all of the Yankees World Series on-field caps since 1998, all of which I have. I guess some people just think it makes them seem sophisticated to disapprove of things like this, but they only succeed in sounding silly. Do it again next year, Yanks!!!

  76. Lacedog

The Yankees need a hat patch that say’s Boston Sucks and one on the other side that say’s who’s your daddy since we whooped up on both the Red Sux and the Philly Phillies who are the only team in sports with the same city name and nickname. Or we can just have those Spike Lee hats with the years of all 27 Series Championships stitched in. YANKEE UNIVERSE!

  77. TDC

    OK, call me simple.
Did anyone notice if they wore Inaugural season caps with the 2009 World Series patch. I d0 not remember seeing the I season caps on the field. I am thinking the caps I picked up are bad knock-offs of the real caps.
