Swish loves him some chocolate milk

That’s it for the blogging today. Long ride back to Tampa with a stop on the way to see Jerry Seinfeld perform in St. Pete. Should be a good time.

But here’s excitable boy Nick Swisher (2 for 3 today) for delicious chocolate milk from Broughton Foods:

Swish is my favorite player. I really hope Cash/Joe realize he is the superior player, regardless of what happens in Spring Training, and starts him in right.

  2. ohgodno February 27th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Swish is awesome. The chocolate milk thing is the truth, my little sister plays college softball, her strength coach recommends chocolate milk after they workout.

I drink it after I workout also; never sore the next day. Swish knows what’s up!

When Gardner was up last September, the Yankees played a four-game series against the White Sox in New York. Residing in manager Ozzie Guillen’s doghouse at the time, Swisher did not play, but he still noticed Gardner.

“This dude comes running around first base like a bolt of lightning, and it’s like, ‘Wow,’” Swisher said. “This dude is moving.”

“That is his game, and I love that,” Swisher said. “I try to push him every day. He’s that scrappy guy — one of those guys that if he gets on the basepaths, he’s going to kill you. I love the way he plays. He grinds out every at-bat, he grinds out every day.”

I just read about chocolate milk being a better post-workout drink than, say, Gatorade, about a week ago! In a nutrition book.

  5. jennifer February 27th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Funny that nick is just wearing a pinstriped jersey, no logo. I know he isn’t allowed to. But it is still so obvious what it is for. :)

  6. duh February 27th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

love swisher, but that beard is terrible.

  7. GreenBeret7 February 27th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

I wonder if 4 gallons of milk and Bosco a day would give me power and speed?

  8. jennifer February 27th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Well he doesn’t have it anymore.

  9. Nick February 27th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Love AJ’s quick-cut segment… i think he is going to thrive here. Love how him and CC looked at eachother and said “is this real?” because they were astonished at how first-class everything was. 2 guys who didn’t even know eachother prior to this press conference became so close. they will lean on eachother and bring the best out of eachother

Swisher, Burnett, Sabathia, Teixeria— choosing which one of those you like best is like choosing which child you like best, it’s impossible to do.

Could there have even 4 better pick-ups, ability and personality-wise? They fit this team like a glove.

  12. Giuseppe Franco February 27th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Several college football programs have adopted the chocolate milk post-workout trend – most notably the University of Michigan about a year ago.

A lot of Olympic athletes also drink chocolate milk after workouts.

I loved Swisher’s comment about how when he got here, he noticed the atmosphere was kind of stuffy and he wanted to do everything he could to change it, and he did basically overnight.

  14. darkmoonfire February 27th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Is the candy ban still on? And is chocolate milk considered as part of that? It would be kind of ironic if he wasn’t allowed to drink a product he promoted at the end of a game.

  15. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) February 27th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

swisher just seems like such a great person, i just cant get enough, hopefully he really contributes to the team :)

and everytime i think of gardner i think of that at bat against papelbon where he won the game for us, its only been 3 games and you cant judge both right now, but if he does keep this up then there is no way melky is the opening day CF

  16. Razz February 27th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

What a dumb rule by Cashman– the no candy one. Yeah, these multi-millionaire athletes who are among the top athletes in the world don’t know how to control their diet. What kind of message does that send to the team?

Torre was 100% right when he said that he changed and became more controlling.

Cashman appears to be the one who is the dictator, not Girardi.

  17. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story February 27th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Swish may have been my favorite off-season signing, actually.

    It was Girardi’s rule.

  20. Giuseppe Franco February 27th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

    No, it wasn’t Buddy.

It was Cashman’s rule. We found that out the other day.

  21. Joba da heat February 27th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

We’re finally a team again, a family. The Yankee atmosphere is not conducive to things like that (with all the rules and pressure of winning and the fans/media), but Swisher (along with the new guys) broke that unbreakable shield and ARE able to have fun and be themselves and show personality.

Swisher basically took it upon himself to make the Yankees fun, something that nobody thought could be done.

  22. Zolio February 27th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Girardi said it was Cashman’s rule last week and Cash himself confirmed it last week

  25. Wilson February 27th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Joe Girardi said today that the finger was incorrectly pointed at him:

“Everyone wants to say that was the Joe Girardi ban. That was an organizational rule. Everyone wants to say that was Joe Girardi, the health freak. The diet does not come from me. It comes from the trainers and the coaches and the strength coach and the doctors and Mr. Cashman. Do I put chocolate Kisses in my mouth? Yes, I do.”

“Girardi said it was Cashman’s rule last week and Cash himself confirmed it last week”

In terms of this, Cashman is being an idiot. Does he think that’s why we haven’t gone far in the playoffs recently? ‘Cause the guys have had too much candy during the season? Please!! These are grown men. They are fully capable of having candy w/o it becoming a problem.

Now, if it were me, there’d be a problem. I’ll kill anybody who tries to keep me away from Reese’s Peanut Butter cups. :P

  33. Yankee2123 February 27th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Fans should shower the field with candy, that will make a good point.

  38. LOL February 27th, 2009 at 9:40 pm

Even if Swisher is not a starter he seems to be having a good affect in the clubhouse. I dont think it would be wise for Cashman to trade him. It seems like everyone on the yankees seem to like him and he lightens the mood in the clubhouse.

  43. Much Ado about Something February 27th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

I wonder if it really true that it was Cashman and the organization rather than Girardi to ban candy. It seems to me that one of the problems Girardi has is he comes off as being like a dictator, and this could be a way to temper that impression.

Shifting the reason onto the GM seems like a typical type of move when working to change the perception.

  44. vinny-b February 27th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

“I’m struggling to understand why fans are so attached to Melky as our starting CF?”

cuz he once wore an empty box of David’s sunflower seeds, on his head.

  45. Scptt February 27th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Melky is a novelty act. He has a cool name and he looks good dancing with Cano and he made a nice catch against the Sox.

No serious baseball observer thinks anything of Melky, whereas they rave about Brett (though they do admit he may not be a starter), but baseball people have much more positive things to say about Brett than they do Melky.

  46. S2W February 27th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Just curious, have the Yankees announced the date they will retire Swisher’s numbers in Monument Park? I want to make sure I am at that game.

  47. Betsy February 27th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Thanks, Pete! Please tell us about Seinfeld tomorrow – I wish I could be there…

Nick was just made for NY – he’s always laughing and smiling (though of course he gets knocked for that, with La Greca and Kay talking recently about whether his enthusiasm would eventually start grating on people – sheesh, you just can’t win in NY). That chocolate milk looks good – do you have to be an athlete to drink it or can us regular posters take a swig? The only time I really ever drink chocolate milk is when I have cocoa krispies – I let the cereal get mushy and by the time it does that, the milk is all yummy and chocolately. I heartily recommend it.

I am so giddy about the team, especially Swisher and AJ. The chemistry is so great and the guys are meshing so well. I can hardly contain myself, I am loaded with giddiness thinking about the guys meshing. I want some photographer to take a Joba-AJ-CC-Bruney-Swisher photo.

“I am so giddy about the team, especially Swisher and AJ. The chemistry is so great and the guys are meshing so well. I can hardly contain myself”

I was more excited, last year in spring training. When following Hughes/Kennedy/Joba.

however, it is positive to see everyone happy. Hopefully, NYY will get off to a fast start this year.

  50. Betsy February 27th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Nick, I couldn’t agree more – AJ is the guy I am incredibly intrigued with and I just love how he and CC have bonded. I think I’ve used the word “bonded” more in the last few weeks than I had previously done in my entire life, lol. I really love the quick cut segments….

  52. T-Dot February 27th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

To be fair— a guy like Swisher MIGHT rub people the wrong way during the season. For example, if we’re in the middle of a 3 game losing streak in August, I doubt the “old guard” (Jeter, MO, Pettitte, Andy) will be happy with Nick being so positive and upbeat and blazing music as if everything is peachy— and interpret him the wrong way as if he doesn’t care if we win or lose or something.

Swisher is a welcome change from the corporate Yankee mold, but I do think there will be times where he rubs the old guard the wrong way. But I hope he continues being himself, we NEED him to be himself.

  53. Andrea February 27th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

I’m slowly coming to love Nick Swisher. He seems to just be excited to be playing, whether he’s OF, 1B or on the bench. He just seems like one of those guys who’s psyched to be there. Like Shelley Duncan, only less powerful and more smiley.

  54. Eric February 27th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Swisher is my favorite player. It’s a shame that he may not be starting. Depth is nice, but not when the inferior player is starting and the better player on the bench.

Then again… how does Girardi explain to Nady that he is going to ride the bench coming off a .305/25/97 season while a guy who hit .219 last year takes his place? Thats why Joe made it an open competition. I want Swisher to start, but I completely understand Joe’s thinking from a manager’s perspective.

Both will get a ton of ABs though, so it’s not really a big deal. One of these guys will be a starter in title only.

  55. GreenBeret7 February 27th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Swisher will only become an irritant if he doesn’t hit a lot better than he did last year.

  56. NYYanksFan February 27th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

A-Rod is friends with Seinfeld. Maybe Pete will run into him at the show.

  57. Betsy February 27th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

GB, then that’s more Cocoa Krispies for me, lol. Maybe they should change their motto from “snap, crackle and pop” to “mushy, yummy and chocolatey”…….

Right now I’m eating Lucky Charms – when I get tired of that, maybe CK again….we’ll see

  58. m February 27th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

I’m with GB7, Swish will not be this fan’s favorite if he’s a scrub.

I think, tho, that he’ll have a breakout season. He seems to go as his mood goes. To say that he was not happy in Chicago would be an understatement.

They say that Ozzie’s some kind of genius, but I don’t think so. He doesn’t care what he says or who he throws under the bus. Don’t think he’s very good at nurturing young players.

  59. Torre's Terrors February 27th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

zell has some more photos of the new yankee stadium:

    http://nyyankeesrumors.com/new.....ate-22709/

  60. Betsy February 27th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

I think fans have some kind of misconception that the “old guard” players (I hate that term) are basically conservative sticks-in-the-mud. Perhaps that’s because other “free spirits” previously on the team, like David Wells, were rather selfish. Fans loved Wells, but he was hardly popular with management or his teammates. Swisher has the rep of being a GREAT clubhouse guy – I’ve not read one negative thing about him personally (such as his personality being grating at times). I can see how someone who is artificially happy, who tries TOO hard, can come off as being a phony and annoying, but I don’t think that’s Nick. He really comes off as being truly a team-oriented player and that kind of attitude will always play well with the Yankees.

  61. m February 27th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

I don’t think Swish would be a bother. I just said that Nady might be irritated because 1) he’s a reserved guy and 2)they’re competing for a job!

Speaking of Cal grads, where’s Nick in SF in Tijuana? I hope that he’s okay. He said a drug bust was going down?

Right back at ya. Someone else said Nick might be a botheration. As long as Nick see ball, hit ball he can go crazy for all I care. :) I do see Nick, not Nady in our plans. That being said, I don’t mind Nady getting more play this season.

    Buddy,

Actually he was in some Mayan sounding locale. But he did say something about shooting and what nots. Haven’t heard back. Maybe he’s looking for a wi-fi signal?
