As I kid, I insisted upon drinking Yoo-Hoo even though I didn’t really like it, just because he was the pitchman in the commercials.

I have been fortunate enough to meet Yogi twice, and stand next to him at an event at his museum. I am 5’9″, and he is no 5’8″! However, his presence in a room certainly adds to his “stature”–he is every bit the wise and funny man he appears to be.

I’ve loved Yogi since 1954, I almost don’t forgive myself for idolizing Mantle growing up when Yogi was the brains behind the outfit and a 3X MVP. I didn’t really appreciate him until my baseball knowledge grew.

Speaking of genius, here are a number of Stengel quotes about Yogi and others. This is my fave — “Why has our pitching been so great? Our catcher (Yogi Berra) that’s why. He looks cumbersome but he’s quick as a cat.”

Best line I ever read about Berra was when Dan Topping and George Weiss ever saw Berra in his Navy uniform (when he was signed). Weiss said, He sure doesn’t look like much of a ballplayer.” Topping said, “Hell, he doesn’t even look like much of a sailor.”
