Brett Gardner wants to play center field but he’s going to have to earn it.

Meanwhile, Happy Birthday to us. The LoHud Yankees Blog started up on Feb. 28, 2006 with a post about Phil Hughes looking good in an intrasquad game. If you’re curious, all of the archives are on the right side at the bottom.

We used the Blogspot software back then and it was a grand experiment, posting Yankees news as it happened on line. I was the first beat writer for any sport in the NYC market to have a blog and we were flying blind. There were no comments and only the sports editor was reading. I’m pretty sure she skipped some days, too. It seemed doomed to fail.

Now here we are, 29 million page views, 5,000 posts and 700,000 comments later. We get readers from nearly every country in the world and there’s a social network that thrives 24 hours a day.

You are what makes us strong, as without readers, this would not exist. So many of you encouraged me or spread the word to your friends and family. This is part of my job but it’s one of the parts I enjoy the most.

So keep those ideas coming. Keep pushing for more and keep reading as there will be plenty more to come. I’m hoping to announce our next reader Q&A with a Yankee early next week.

Congratulations, Pete! I grew up in Rockland, getting my Yankees news from the JN during the early 1960s. Now I live in Southern Maryland and get my Yankees news from you online. How cool. I check in on the blog several times per day and love to be able to know what is happening with my team pretty much as it is happening. Your unique perspective on the team and your ability to provide inside information brings a richness, an intimacy to the blog that I don’t get anywhere else. Thanks so much.

    Dynamite, Pete. Well-deserved congratulations.

    Happy Birthday LoHud Yankees Blog!!

Congratulations, Pete! It’s because of your efforts in keeping this blog going with continuous posts, updated news and unique team and clubhouse views that the interest has continued and grown. You should be proud and I sure hope the paper recognizes your efforts.

Hope you enjoyed Seinfeld! I’ve been lucky enough to see him twice myself, he’s great!

Pete, I told you once before. Feed the posts on this blog via your unused Twitter account. I will help you by re-Tweeting your updates, and your readership will skyrocket from it. The blog update feed is automatic, all you do is set it up and when you make a new post it generates a tweet and sends it out. Then others can re-tweet it so it gets seen by others exponentially. E-mail me if you need help. Use that Twitter account, it is the most powerful social network tool there is.

    I am at http://twitter.com/kallardnyc

    Happy Birthday and Congratulations!

I’ve been enjoying this blog since about October of 2006. It was my first foray into the blogosphere. I tentatively started posting and now I can say I’ve been fully immersed in this “experiment.”

It has really added to my enjoyment of the Yankees and baseball in general.

Thanks for all your dedication and hard work, Pete!

  12. Matt in China

Pete I read the blog everyday, afternoon, and night. It’s one of the best sports blogs anywhere and us fans thank you for all you’re hard work on it. Been in China for about a month now and haven’t missed anything not even the spring game lineups. Thank you. Can’t wait to see what the blog has in store for us this year.

    Pete:

In this country and in this game, certain qualities invariably lead to success. Creativity, dedication, initiative and, above all else, hard work. Starting up and maintaining this blog shows all of these qualities. That it’s a success is hardly a surprise.

Congratulations, Mr. Abe. And many many thanks for the virtual “all access” pass.

  18. jennifer

    Happy birthday lohud.

Curiously, is this the most successful sports blog in the US?

  19. john

    Happy Birthday,

I don’t comment often, but I always read them. This blog is part of my IE start group and it’s always my first stop for Yankee news. Keep up the great work.

    John

  20. Dassit

Congratulations from The Netherlands Pete! Great job.

  21. Paco Dooley

Let’s all keep in mind that a blog only thrives the way this one does when the blogger posts high quality material on a regular basis, and that is certainly the case here. (I don’t bother with most other blogs)

So the success of this blog is all about the dedication of Pete Abraham!

  22. jk

    Great job Peter, congrats.

  23. john

nice work pete. thanks for all the hard work

  24. RJPinstripes

CONGRATS !!!! Pete on an awesome blog. I read it everyday throughout the year, and you’ve come a long way from the Norwich Bulletin where I loved your U-Conn hoops coverage! Keep up the great work here in The Apple.

  25. Garym(Yanks and More)

Congratulations and Happy Birthday, keep up the good work.

  26. Stacey

Happy Birthday to the best blog on the internet!
    :)

  27. DominicanYank

Although I don’t post comments as religously as others, I visit this blog at least 3 times a day and have told all my family and friends about…it really is one of the best sports blogs on the internet. Feliz Cumpleanos! (Happy Birthday in Spanish…).

  28. Deep to Left

Congrats to you Pete… and Lohud… on the “grand experiment”. This blog sets the standard.

I don’t post much, but I’m out here lurking and reading nearly every day. And have been doing so routinely for about two years now… from home… from work… from my iPhone… It’s an integral part of my life now!

    Keep up the awesome work!

    John in Delanson, NY

  34. Yankees Chick

Congrats, Pete, and keep it up! I’ve seen this site come a long way over the past couple years and rely on it for interesting news and unique pics and opinions I can’t find anywhere else. Can’t wait to see where you take it :)

  35. Khoa

Congrats Pete. As some have mentioned, you’ve become a part of people’s daily routine. Thanks for the great work. Hope they’ve been rewarding you appropriately over there at LoHud.

  36. RMS

Congratulations Pete!!! You do a great job.

  37. Burnett after reading

I think it is hilarious that this blog started back when someone might have considered trading for Barry Zito. When I re-read what you wrote about trading hughes for zito I was laughing hysterically.

  38. Bronx Born

Congrats Pete! You are one of the most genuine reporters around and we greatly appreciate your accessibility, vision and care.

  39. JB

Happy blogiversary and thanks for keeping the yankeee news fun and insightful, Pete.

  40. Brian

Congrats with the blog Pete and great job. I find the blog a must read on a daily basis for up to the minute Yankee news.

  41. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Happy Birthday, Pete. Congratulations on the huge success that this blog has become. I came on board about May that year, I think. Ironically, I think were were discussing A-Rod. Imagine that, huh?

It was funny looking over the first couple of months of blog posts and seeing the topics and responses. There were so few comments to start with that you were able to reply personally to almost all of them. Imagine doing that now? LOL.

  42. JF

    Happy birthday!

  43. Marc

    Congrats Pete!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I hope your bosses are taking notice. To be honest LoHud is a paper/site I’d never be reading if it weren’t for this blog. You’re my first source for Yankee’s news and I don’t know what I’d do without the blog. Not that I don’t want you to grow professionally but I dread the day that you move on to something else and pass the reigns of this blog on to the next guy. Filling your blogging shoes is like someone trying to fill in Mo’s shoes as the Yankees closer. Just not fair. Keep it up and don’t let it get to your head ;)

Thanks for all your hard work,

    -Marc

  44. TexasYanksfan

If I only read one blog a day, it’s this one. Why? Because you update and post like a fiend, use a nice and growing mix of multimedia and oh yeah, are the best way to keep up with my favorite baseball team from halfway across the country.

Happy blog anniversary and here’s to many more. Congrats, Pete.
