A-Rod to meet with MLB later on today

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 01, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Alex Rodriguez left Ed Smith Field in his black Maybach. Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira were with him for the trip back to Tampa.

At least we’re assuming that was his car. The license plate frame said “ALEX RODRIGUEZ.” But maybe somebody else named Alex Rodriguez has a $400,000 car in Sarasota.

Team sources indicated that Rodriguez will have his meeting with the MLB investigators this evening in Tampa. That matches up with what he said today, at least somewhat. The New York Post is reporting the same thing.

Don’t expect the meeting to produce much. Unless Rodriguez refuses to cooperate with basic questions, he will not be suspended. There’s not much point in having an investigations unit if they sit this one out.

He puts miles and miles on the Maybach. He’s just on another level. LOL.

“The license plate frame said “ALEX RODRIGUEZ.” But maybe somebody else named Alex Rodriguez has a $400,000 car in Sarasota.”

Aside from having millions of dollars, owning a Mercedes dealership has its privileges.

    Who had shotgun?

hmm would i love to be a fly “accidently” stuck in the car. lol

btw CC and Joba were just on espn, saying the usual, work hard, we are a family, we will probably need a gps to navigate through the new yankee stadium. lol

  5. Peter Abraham March 1st, 2009 at 5:04 pm

I don’t know about anybody else, but I find it amusing that A-Rod would buy a $400,000 car then get a license plate holder with his name on it to make sure people recognize him.

‘hmm would i love to be a fly “accidently” stuck in the car. lol’

    Why ?

“I don’t know about anybody else, but I find it amusing that A-Rod would buy a $400,000 car then get a license plate holder with his name on it to make sure people recognize him.”

I would think that that car is being used to distract the Media. He went in some other car, I am sure.

  8. Tom March 1st, 2009 at 5:08 pm

    Alex really has become a post-modern caricature…

  9. Pel March 1st, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Anybody have an idea of how much playing time is lost for the Yanks playing in the WBC?

  10. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:08 pm

I say Robinson has the back seat, LOL. And Joba and CC were a collective sleeping pill.

  11. Nick March 1st, 2009 at 5:10 pm

    LOL

Why does A-Rod have his name on his car? This guy is hilarious

As long as it wasn’t a Yankees plate or holder. Thats where I draw the line! :)

  13. Peter Abraham March 1st, 2009 at 5:11 pm

I’m sure you’re right, Larry. What better use for a $400,000 car then to leave it on a dusty street in Sarasota to distract reporters?

  14. DT March 1st, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Give Arod a break – the license plate frame is so he can identify his car in the mall parking lot.

All those black Maybachs look alike…lol

OT-But Canty is a NY Giant (for any Giants fans)

Must be nice to have a $400,000 car. My little Honda Accord doesn’t seem to match up to it. :(

  18. jennifer March 1st, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Okay I usually say you pick on Alex. But seriously what is wrong with the man. His 400,000 car already sticks out like a sore thumb, does he really need to advertise that it is his car? This dude seriously has a screw loose.

“I break for squirrels, but not beat reporters (and Selena)”

  21. jennifer March 1st, 2009 at 5:17 pm

I mean a 400,000 why can’t he be a little normal and drive a car that is say 80,000?

  22. jennifer March 1st, 2009 at 5:17 pm

dt- you are a laugh a minute.

  23. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Why does it even matter about the license plate holder? LMAO. And people feel the “A-Rod apologists” are uptight.

If he gets a tat on his face I might get concerned.

Jennifer, I’m thinking there are a few Yanks who break the $80,000 mark. Maybe not the $400,000 but definitely the $80,000.

Wait, what am I saying? This is a team with a hand full of dudes with their own planes! LOL

  26. Doreen March 1st, 2009 at 5:23 pm

ARod is exactly the vanity plate type guy. He’d be like that even if he wasn’t in baseball.

I just shake my head and thank heavens he doesn’t belong to me! :)

Seriously, I am not at all confident that ARod’s meeting is going to go smoothly. :(

  27. MCB March 1st, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Good Old Peter Gammons just made the prediction that Smoltz will be the best pitcher in the game come September. “Watching Beckett, Lester & Smoltz will be fascinating” and the Sox are holding Smoltz back for that September run.

What happened to Gammons? He use to be a solid reporter. Now he is just a mouthpiece for the Sox.

  28. carl March 1st, 2009 at 5:24 pm

    Haters mad cuz he’ ballin’.

  29. Doris from Rego Park March 1st, 2009 at 5:24 pm

I have no problem with him owning a 400k car at all; I just hate that car. It has the exact same navigation system as my 2009 E350.

  30. pat March 1st, 2009 at 5:25 pm

“I don’t know about anybody else, but I find it amusing that A-Rod would buy a $400,000 car then get a license plate holder with his name on it to make sure people recognize him.”

I’m choosing to believe Pete is playing dumb because the alternative would be too sad.

  31. dave March 1st, 2009 at 5:26 pm

why he would want everyone to know which car he is in, I have no idea. You would think he wouldnt want anyone to know where he was at any given moment at this time in his life.

I guess Alex wants people to “look at him” and with that car and those plates, they are doing so.

  34. dave March 1st, 2009 at 5:29 pm

when was gammons a solid reporter? Not in my lifetime that I can recall.

  35. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Pat I’m choosing to believe everyone in this thread is playing. LOL

  36. GreenBeret7 March 1st, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Imagine that….a high profile person with Vanity Plates. Must be a first for Yankee players. Even Thurman Munson tried to sneak by with NYY15 on his tags and plane ID numbers.

  37. U-Turn March 1st, 2009 at 5:32 pm

I haven’t even turned on that Baseball Tonight special… anything interesting?

  38. Tom March 1st, 2009 at 5:32 pm

pete, I don’t understand why Arod wouldn’t say whether his meeting was today.. whats the big deal? just say yes… all this dancing around the questions just makes him appear like he’s hiding more.

  39. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) March 1st, 2009 at 5:32 pm

    lol!

  40. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:34 pm

I thought the less he said the better. As if him admitting his meeting tonight was going to lead to NO follow up questions.

Dont answer the first question and you won’t to worried about all those that will follow on the topic.

There was no game. He said he wasn’t going to speak on it. The game was the writer thinking if they kept asking he’d forget he wasn’t going to answer it. Their job is to get people talking but he wasn’t willing…so be it.

  41. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:35 pm

“I haven’t even turned on that Baseball Tonight special… anything interesting?”

    You missed nothing U-Turn.

  42. adam March 1st, 2009 at 5:39 pm

i dont think anyone realizes but a-rod actually owns a mercedes dealership in texas and like many dealerships by default all cars out of said dealership have the dealership name own it which would explain why alex’s has alex rodriguez on it. He probably didnt ask for it it was prolly already on the car by default.

  43. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:40 pm

I take it back. Rollins and Howard of the Phillies were cool to watch. Entertaining personalities.

  44. Brandon Witnessed Dwayne Wade pull an MJ March 1st, 2009 at 5:40 pm

  45. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Adam, no one cares about that. Go away trying to make sense and stuff! :) Just like no one thought his ex still wanted to be thought of as Mrs. A-Rod when she was driving around Miami with same plate holder on said car a couple of months ago. LOL

  46. pat March 1st, 2009 at 5:43 pm

    adam

I think Pete realizes (that was the basis for my “playing dumb” comment) but that wouldn’t be as good a story.

  47. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Its the latest Manny non-story story. Wake me when the dude signs.

    Not yet anyway.

  49. Doreen March 1st, 2009 at 5:47 pm

Does he really own a dealership? I didn’t know that – I’ve never heard that nor read it.

  50. yo March 1st, 2009 at 5:48 pm

isn’t anyone at all excited – seriously – that arod might actually have some real friends on the team?

  51. pat March 1st, 2009 at 5:49 pm

    Doreen

    Mercedes Benz in Texas.

  52. Red Dragons March 1st, 2009 at 5:51 pm

    No.

As Joe Torre said… A-Rod’s only friend on the team is the bullpen catcher.

  53. Mark in Tampa March 1st, 2009 at 5:51 pm

It is in Houston, not sure if there is one in Miami as well. Arodmercedesbenz.com. Also, authorized Maybach dealer.

  54. Mark in Tampa March 1st, 2009 at 5:54 pm

“isn’t anyone at all excited – seriously – that arod might actually have some real friends on the team?”

I’d be his friend too, for a ride in the Maybach instead of the team bus.

But, seriously I do think it is a good sign that teammates are not trying to avoid him, or be afraid to be seen around him.

  56. jennifer March 1st, 2009 at 5:56 pm

    Oh gag me

    http://www.arodmercedesbenz.co.....eride.html

Shouldn’t they do this for you? I mean you are paying a zillion dollars for your car!

At my dealership I always get a loaner (well maybe not for a oil change) but any time my car needs any sort of service I ask for and get a loaner.

  57. Doreen March 1st, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Thanks, Pat & Jen. Well, then, certainly he and Ray Catena (who’s name is on my license plate cover) have something in common!).

I cracked up when I went to the web site. “Here at Alex Rodriguez…..” – just sounds funny.

I still think he’s the vanity plate type, though. And I’m not being overly critical – I’ve flirted with the idea, and my father-in-law had them because my mom-in-law was running out of ideas for birthday presents!

  58. Tom March 1st, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Hey— if my choices were to ride in a 400K Maybach or a bus… I would ride the Maybach even if I hated the guy.

  59. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 5:59 pm

I’m buying the wrong cars because my dealer never picks me up and delivers my car to me when its done. And why wouldn’t they put it on the web site?

    Enema much?

  60. jennifer March 1st, 2009 at 6:01 pm

His cars are over priced. For kicks I looked at his used car inventory. The ford focus that he is selling is like 3,000 grand over what edmunds says it should be.

  61. li March 1st, 2009 at 6:03 pm

If he keeps the dealership license plate holder, maybe he can count it as a business expense and tax deduction.

  64. Tommy March 1st, 2009 at 6:06 pm

A $400,000 car is plain disgusting.

  65. Benny Blanco March 1st, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Don’t be a hater, wouldn’t mind having a car like that myself. :)

I am a little worried how the meeting will go.

  67. Jeremy March 1st, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Cano and Teixeira are both extremely wealthy. They are not choosing between ARod and the bus. They are choosing between ARod, their own fancy cars, or some car service that can pick them up in the car or limo of their choosing.

You ever shop on Canal Street? The haggle is sometimes more fun than the purchase. Same goes for buying a car. MSRP is nothing more than a suggestion and only suckers actually pay it.

  70. GreenBeret7 March 1st, 2009 at 6:14 pm

There are many dealerships that have “No-Haggle” policies, and it seems to be a thing that is really common here in the south and southwest.

All things considered, who would you rather have as the Yankee 3rd baseman, A- Rod or . . .

    Evan Longoria 3b
    6 years/$17.5M (2008-13), plus 2014-16 club options

  88. Mark in Tampa March 1st, 2009 at 6:37 pm

Let’s see how Longoria does this year after the pitchers start finding his weaknesses. David Wright was supposed to be better than Arod by this point, according to some of the ESPN fools, but Arod is still the better player.

Longoria may well have a better year this year than last, and be a truly great 3B, but let’s not induct him yet.

This isn’t a very good example. Luccino has already said that they couldn’t be spending more than 170 mil plus for a player. On day two, they had another reason…on day three it was because of the failing economy.

  90. Betsy March 1st, 2009 at 6:38 pm

Not particularly amused Pete – that kind of stuff just doesn’t interest me, I admit.

  91. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Well, there is no comparison when it comes to Evan. You are worth what someone is willing to pay you at the time of your contract. Its all about timing. If Evan had A-Rod’s numbers and it was time to sign him he wouldn’t answer his phone for $17.5 million.

“We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day” – Linda Evangelista, model. <—I just felt the need to type that quote because man I love it! LOL

  92. Tom March 1st, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Contract aside, Alex is the better player.

  93. Betsy March 1st, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Jennifer, I completely disagree. The man has the right to spend the $$$ on a car or whatever he wishes. Ok if Pete wants to report that, but I don’t care. I have absolutely zero interest in what Alex or any player spends their $$$ on nor do I judge them on it. If he wants to have his name on his plate, that’s his choice. I don’t see the big deal at all.

  94. GreenBeret7 March 1st, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Those that complain about people who drive $400,000 usually travel by $79.95 Schwinn 4 speeds.

  95. Doreen March 1st, 2009 at 6:49 pm

If I made the kind of money ARod does, I’d spend the kind of money ARod does. I have no problem with him spending the money he makes.

Now, don’t ask me if baseball players “should be” making what they make — that’s a different issue altogether. And since they do make what they make, it’s also totally irrelevant!\

OMG!! The guy drives a $400,000 car?!?!?!?! And, it has a license plate holder around it with his name on it?!?!?!?!?! Wait, he makes 28 million a year in salary alone and owns a car dealership that the car most likely comes from? Oh.

All this talk about money reminds me of some story. I don’t know if its true. Someone was ragging on an MLBer about his height and he said something about being taller when he’s standing on his wallet. Was that Bret Boone?

  99. denmark stroud March 1st, 2009 at 7:05 pm

I travel via Bicycle so obviously I’m a little bit gealous.

  100. Tom March 1st, 2009 at 7:09 pm

    Central-Indians

West-Angels, however, the A’s will be there until the end.

    Wild Card-Rays or Red Sox

    NL

    East-Braves

    Central-Cubs

    West-D’Backs

    Wild card-Phillies.

  101. Betsy March 1st, 2009 at 7:11 pm

It just comes down to the fact that fans are jealous of players. I find it ironic, frankly. Fans don’t like players making $$$ of money for playing a game yet these same fans probably spend wads of $$$ on lottery tickets, hoping for a free windfall to come their way ($$$ that they did nothing to earn, by the way).

  102. YankeeDiva March 1st, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Better to have a vanity plate with a $400,000 car than one with a $1000 car. If you are going to spend that much money on a car I suppose you might as well go all out.

Personally I don’t get vanity plates at all for Arod or a regular Joe.

  103. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 7:14 pm

“Better to have a vanity plate with a $400,000 car than one with a $1000 car.”

How about $2000 sound system or rims in $1000?

  104. adam March 1st, 2009 at 7:16 pm

when will people understand it is not a vanity plate. It is the plate of his dealership which is called alex rodriguez mercedes.

  106. DAN March 1st, 2009 at 7:17 pm

A-Rod put his name on the plate because he wanted to let everybody know it was his car and admire it and say ‘Wow.. A-Rod rides that car!”

  107. miggs March 1st, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Did anybody ever stop to think that maybe his name was on his license plate frame because it was from HIS dealership?

And don’t most dealerships put their name on license plate frames that come with the car?

    The witchhunt is pathetic. PATHETIC.

  108. Jetes 2 March 1st, 2009 at 7:19 pm

As Pete said… not very smart to park a $400,000 Mercades in the dusty parking lot of a Spring Training baseball game with your name plate on the back.

Again, just a continued trend of poor judgment on his part. He is clueless in all walks of life, not just baseball.

We’re just having a little class warfare fun in this depressing economy. :)

  111. Harris March 1st, 2009 at 7:23 pm

There are A LOT better people to choose to be jealous of than A-Rod.

Jeter, Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Brad Pitt, etc.

  112. ECG 234 March 1st, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Why does A-Rod even have a car? Doesn’t Yuri Sucart drive him everywhere anyway?

  113. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 7:31 pm

“Hey do you know my last date??”

YankeeDiva, sadly there are too many of your last dates around the country. LOL

  114. Al March 1st, 2009 at 7:37 pm

It’s almost too bad that the car says “Alex Rodriguez” likely because he owns the car dealership. It would be much, much funnier the other way.

I have a 400,000 car too. But only on the odometer.

  116. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 7:40 pm

I dont think I’d want to be Kobe Bryant. People may have forgotten, but I’d rather do steroids instead of (some) people thinking I might have gotten away with assaulting a woman.

I don’t know if the “R” word may cause my post to disappear.

    http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/553311

An interesting, although not altogether positive article on AJ.

I don’t recall AJ saying that he was best buddies with Halladay (unlike what this article implies), just that he learned a lot from him.

This writers sounds a little bitter to me, as if he’s taking personally that AJ didn’t stay in Toronto. I do expect that AJ has matured a great deal since his Florida days – if not, then what we have here is a combustible situation.

The negative tone doesn’t change my mind on AJ at all. I’m doing exactly what I did when Roger came here – I always give guys a chance when they put on the pinstripes. I still think he seems like a really neat guy with a cool personality. Jays fans seem to think he’ll crumble in NY, but it’s hard to take them seriously when they hate the Yankees so much. I’m rather hoping AJ blows the Jays away just to shut their whiny fans up.

  118. Ed H. March 1st, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I would bet that the car is owned by the dealership and not by ARod personally. It’s got to be a demo, which dealerships provide to employees to drive around as advertising for the dealership. Hence, the dealership license plate holder. The person who owns a dealership always picks the nicest, most expensive car to drive around in himself. When Alex tires of the car he turns it back into the dealership and picks another car.

  119. jennifer March 1st, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Betsy- I didn’t even bother to read the article skimmed some of the comments. Pretty funny considering the fans reaction when he walked of the mound at the end of the year. They gave the man a huge standing ovation.

  120. Betsy March 1st, 2009 at 7:51 pm

    One more thing:

The fact is, apparently the Jays DID want AJ back -they made a fairly significant offer. If JP thought the guy was that much of a malingerer, then no way does he offer that much $$$ and years……

  121. Betsy March 1st, 2009 at 7:55 pm

    Jen, that’s right, lol…….

The writer didn’t spend much time on his positives (one tiny paragraph) and made it sound like the guy is bipolar, so it’s a bit hard to take him too seriously.

I’m a HUGE AJ fan -he might be my favorite out of all the new guys – so I really just posted this to spark baseball conversation.

I think Jays fans are right up there with Mets fans as being whiny beyond belief……

  122. Al from BK March 1st, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Who the heck is pitching the ends of these games? Last 3 games Yankees lead then wind up giving up a boat load of runs. I hope this is just cuz its early especially Joba getting killed.

  123. Lara08 March 1st, 2009 at 8:00 pm

People always tend to hate on the things they can’t have.

  124. James March 1st, 2009 at 8:01 pm

AJ is a huge question mark and it goes beyond just health.

His performance on he field has never matched his “nasty” stuff. He has been an average pitcher for most of his life. Even this year, he had an ERA over 4. He’s always had iffy control too.

He’s a guy from the South who has played in only small markets with apathetic crowds/media before and has never pitched in any big games or been in a pennant race.

He still has to answer many questions. Smiling with CC in Spring Training doesn’t answer for his ability to perform in NY

  125. Yanks 83 March 1st, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Burnett is our #3 starter– the trouble is when people try to make him more than that to justify his price tag. He is a middle of the rotation starter who has the stuff capable to pitch with anyone but isin’t consistent and is injury prone.

He was the best of the 2nd tier bunch (Lowe, an injured Sheets, Perez, Garland etc.) so we had no choice but to sign him.

If people accept him for what he is and set their expectations low, then it should be fine. If they expect him to be an ace who makes 30 starts every year, they are setting themselves up for disappointment based on his track record.

Pretty much. I think Cashman already knows the 25 man roster. But the 40-man is still being decided. Also, if there is a deal in the works, it would involve one of those guys. So the Yanks are making sure they get enough exposure.
