A-Rod: I want Reyes on Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 03, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Alex Rodriguez told reporters in Jupiter today that he wished Jose Reyes played for the Yankees. Uh-oh.

He later then sent word through a team PR man that his comments shouldn’t be taken as a shot at Derek Jeter. But of course it’ll still be seen that way.

It’s truly amazing the fixes this guys gets himself into. It really is.

UPDATE, 5:31 p.m: Here is what A-Rod said: “I wish (Reyes) was leading off on our team or playing on our team. That’s fun to watch.”

Jose Reyes is a terrific player and it may have been an innocent comment. But given Alex’s history with Jeter, he should have found a different way to say something nice about Reyes. It just doesn’t make sense.

UPDATE, 5:54 p.m.: A buddy of mine just sent me a text. Would you trade A-Rod for Wright straight up? The Yankees would have to include some money. But you’d have to think about it hard, right?

It sort of makes sense. A-Rod was a Mets fan growing up. The Mets need a power hitter and somebody to draw attention to their second-tier franchise. He’d fit right in with their clubhouse and get to play with Reyes. The Yankees would benefit because they’d get younger and be rid of the headache.

The only problem: The Mets would never do it.

oy

3. Phil March 3rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm

The extents you’ll go to to slight this guy? It sure is.

4. Al from BK March 3rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Reyes is talented of course he would say that.

5. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) March 3rd, 2009 at 5:23 pm

arod for god sakes just SHUT the hell UP.

6. Peter Abraham March 3rd, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Phil:

Congratulations, you had the fastest knee-jerk reaction by an A-Rod apologist in history. You win a new bucket of sand to stick your head in. Please come to Tampa to claim your prize.

7. Al March 3rd, 2009 at 5:23 pm

moron

8. Anthony March 3rd, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Oh please. The guy is not allowed to say anything.

9. Pokey March 3rd, 2009 at 5:24 pm

You’d think one of those 200 advisors he has on board would tell him to just shut up.

As for the idea of Reyes, let’s just say it’s a good thing A-Rod isn’t the GM.

10. Doris from Rego Park March 3rd, 2009 at 5:24 pm

I think Pete’s point is that if you are Arod why would you even go there?

11. bobmac March 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm

On a lighter note.Gannett Co. ends today at 2.22 down nearly 25% on the stock being declared junk status by Moody’s.So keep those shots at AROD coming so you can get more site hits.

12. Mackenzie March 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Alex: SHUT YOUR MOUTH! I defend you, but then you say stupid thing after stupid thing. He has zero common sense. I doubt he meant it as a slight, but I have no clue what the context was. If he just said it unprovoked, then he’s just a dumbass.

13. Vito March 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm

With all his “advisors” you’d think someone would tell him to just shut the hell up and play.

14. Peter Abraham March 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Thanks for reading, Bobmac. We appreciate it.

15. rconn23 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm

At this point, not really sure what to say.

Haven’t seen the exact quote, but if it’s that cut and dry, that’s really an absurd thing for him to say.

I’m beginning to believe he just lacks any social skills. Maybe he’s really not that smart.

Perhaps he’s like Blago from Chicago and finds it strangely alluring to get bad press.

It’s vexing, it really is.

16. Bill from NJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm

alex enjoys the drama. he loves this sh*t.

17. Doris from Rego Park March 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm

I am no Arod apologist but watching people like Phil defend Arod an nauseum is exactly why people hate Yankee fans.

18. Marc March 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Pete,

I’m a big fan of your reporting and this blog. But you should really post A-Rod’s exact words before dragging him through the mud and trying to create something of nothing. Who wouldn’t want Reyes on their team? He’s talented as all hell and fun to watch.

Who knows? Maybe A-Rod is just part of that “move Jeter to CF” legion?

19. Sean March 3rd, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Oh great.. more tabloid non sense

Peter you ever consider working for TMZ? This baseball stuff might not be your shtick.

20. Mike March 3rd, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Give me a break. Pete and everyone else just love looking for things to attack him for. It meant nothing more than he is a good player. Who wouldn’t want him on their team? If he said he wished Lincecum was on the Yankees would that be a shot against CC? God Damn the guy can’t even talk without having every word analyzed.

21. The Truth March 3rd, 2009 at 5:28 pm

LOL Sean

22. Peter Abraham March 3rd, 2009 at 5:29 pm

Marc:

I’m waiting on the exact quote. Obviously I was in Tampa. I love Reyes, too. But when the captain of your team plays the same position, you just shouldn’t say something remotely like that.

David Wright is here with Team USA. Derek said some nice things about him but didn’t say, “Boy, I wish he played for us.”

23. bobmac March 3rd, 2009 at 5:29 pm

You bet,Pete.I’ll organise a bus trip to Lace and Stiletto’s.

24. Jerkface March 3rd, 2009 at 5:29 pm

He wants Jose Reyes as utility infielder.

YAWN, another cheap shot at A-rod

25. Bill from NJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Sean,

This is about baseball.

26. Bronx Baseball Daily March 3rd, 2009 at 5:30 pm

I don’t see why people are getting upset with Pete over this? Wouldn’t people wonder if Jeter said he really wished the Yankees had David Wright on the team? Yes they would.

It’s fair, Arod is an idiot and proves it every time he opens his mouth.

27. Doris from Rego Park March 3rd, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Arod could deny the holocaust at this point and some of you people would attack Pete for tabloid journalism.

28. Doe March 3rd, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Arod pays Reyes a compliment and you see it as a negative. Pete you need therapy.

29. Yankees 'N More March 3rd, 2009 at 5:31 pm

I’d love to see Jose Reyes on the Yankees, too.

That does not mean I hate Derek Jeter.

Sometimes it as if we spend our time LOOKING for that offend us.

30. Jack Knight March 3rd, 2009 at 5:31 pm

The point here is not that a-Rod hate Jeter, it’s that he is just an idiot. You don’t say something like that. You would think with the amount of time he’s been in the spotlight and the endless array of bad press, he would learn to listen to his mother; think before you speak, Alex. You’d be doing all of us a favor.

31. Matt March 3rd, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Whoa, okay. I think A-rod should stop saying stupid stuff, but I also think people should stop caring so much. Clearly Alex is an idiot sometimes, and clearly he’s not the best person in the world, so can we just stop railing on him whenever he does something? Let’s leave him alone off the field and we can criticize him when he doesn’t perform on the field. I’m tired of seeing posts about him.

Can we have another all-natural/no A-rod day again? Or week?

32. Yankees 'N More March 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 pm

That should have read: Sometimes it’s as if we spend our time LOOKING for things about which to be offended.

33. Don March 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 pm

LOL

This has just became hysterical. Can this dude go one day without saying or doing something abnormal?

It’s like a disease

34. Mike March 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 pm

I also like how all the articles from yesterday pointed out what kind of car he got out of and how much they cost….like hes the only professional athlete with an expensive car

35. Can't Stand Ya March 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Pete,

Any chance A-rod writes his own book about his use of steroids and other loosey goosey things and titles it “If I did it, here’s how it happened.” This guy is a moron whether or not he has the ability to put up the best numbers in baseball.

36. Mackenzie March 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Pete’s reporting what he hears. ARod said that, and then sent out word that it wasn’t supposed to be a shot at Jeter. The only editorialism that went on was

“No, of course not. Reyes plays shortstop. That’s the same position Jeter plays. How could anybody take that as a shot?”

Blasphemous material, right there. ‘

ARod becomes harder to defend every day. I can’t wait for April to start, so stupid crap like this is irrelevant.

37. Jack Knight March 3rd, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Dan,

You know there are diseases that cause lack of social grace. Someone needs to look further into what you’re suggesting.

38. Sean March 3rd, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Bill,

No it’s not. It’s about a baseball writers over analyzing everything A-Rod does and says.

39. ARIZZ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Not even the staunchest A-Rod supporter can defend this kind of idiocy from A-Rod.

This guy has the social skills of a pre-school kid.

40. teddy March 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 pm

arod intent wasn’t to bash arod, but it was stupid to say and arod always does something stupid. this is a not story. i want pujois on ny, is that a shot at texiera? no

41. Mackenzie March 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 pm

“You know there are diseases that cause lack of social grace. Someone needs to look further into what you’re suggesting.”

Maybe he’s like Ricky Williams. Except without the marijuana. Although something tells me if ARod smoked, he would at least seem more likeable, and his strange comments might make sense and make us laugh more.

42. Lara08 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 pm

So he tried to toss a few props Jose Reyes’s way, its no big deal. Oh that’s right, we live in a world where people need to create drama for no reason and play dumb. So we’re going to act like it was more about dissing Derek and less about giving praise to Jose.

I can’t wait to see how many people write stories about this as it being a dig at Derek.

Of course Alex didn’t mean to take a slight at Derek because even A-Rod knows only Jesus can replace Derek at SS, and Jesus ain’t a sure thing himself.

43. teddy March 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm

intent to bash jeter sorry

44. vtred March 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm

At this point, I cringe less when Hank speaks than I do A-Rod.

45. COL 88 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Maybe he wants Reyes on the Yankees to play Centerfield???

46. Can't Stand Ya March 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm

For all the A-rod supporters/Pete bashers you gotta realize everything that Alex is going through right now. His main focus should be HIS team, meaning THE GUYS ON THE YANKEE ROSTER. Sure the WBC is cool but if the DR wins, is anyone going to care when judging his legacy or his public persona? No. Alex had his whole half hour pause when reflecting how supportive his yankee teammates are and how they are like family and then turns around and says I wish Reyes was a yankee. Great A-rod. The yankees give their fans a star player at every position by spending boat loads of money and all you can tell the media is “I wish we had Reyes too.” You idiot.

47. Buddy Biancalana March 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm

A Rod is only happy when his head is firmly placed in his own bum.

48. Jack Knight March 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pm

I think if A-Rod smoke marijuana he might actually say something intelligent by accident.

49. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) March 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pm

arod’s problem is that he always adds on these little unnecessary tidbits to interviews (ex. selena being a stalker) that always either come off wrong or he starts to over-exagerate.

that said not everyone is jeter and is going to have amazing PR skills but sheesh sometimes i wonder if arods brain works right.

50. Brandon Witnessed Dwayne Wade pull an MJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Umm who wouldn’t want Reyes on thier team, maybe he’s talking about Reyes’s future FA possibilities. He’s gasing the kid up already, Jetes moves to LF Reyes at SS everyone is happy.

51. Matt March 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Question: Does anyone even care about what A-rod does off the field anymore? At least I don’t want to hear about him anymore.

Come on guys, let’s get over criticizing him or defending him and just concentrate on baseball.

52. Ham Fighters March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

in the words of my idol bugs bunny: “what a maroon!”

53. Lara08 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Oh yeah, you saying you’d love to have Pujols on your team is a DIRECT SHOT at Teixeira and how much you don’t like Tex as a player. You’re not fooling me Teddy.

Its only problem is he isn’t smart enough to know tools will try and make something out of nothing. So in that case, yeah it was a dumb comment by Alex.

54. Marc March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Pete,

Thats the thing. Without A-Rod’s exact words it could have been something as innocent as a reporter asking A-Rod what he thought about Jose Reyes and A-Rod nonchalantly responding with something like “Who wouldn’t want Reyes on their team?” and suddenly we’ve got a scandal.

Again Pete, I’m not trying to flame you. I’m a huge supporter and fan of this site and all your hard work. I just think you may have jumped the gun on this one a bit unleashing all this talkback without all the facts lined up.

-M

55. Tom March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

I hear ya, Pete. Alex is not the brightest bulb in the world.

56. Vrsce March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

It is apparent to all by now that Arod walks around with his foot perpetually in his mouth and is obviously not really very smart. So perhaps we can all get over being shocked when he makes another dumb comment.

He is no one’s role mode or idol. He is, in fact, the anti Jeter. Let’s be happy that we have Jeter and count our blessings and lower expectations of Arod, lack of character, like lack of talent, is hard to overcome.

57. Brandon Witnessed Dwayne Wade pull an MJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

BTW BIG BLUE FANS

Jerry Reese is targeting Braylon Edwards of Cleveland and willing to deal Kiwi.

58. Sean March 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

I think baseball writers are inching closer to lawyers, politicians, and cops when it comes to most hated.

59. CG March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Sounds like a jab at Damon now too. Boy that ARod.

60. Rock em Sock em Robots March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Hahaha, HILARIOUS idea “Can’t Stand Ya.”

As for people angry that Pete would write about this….why shouldn’t he? It’s Pete’s job to cover the Yankees. A-rod is on the team. And whether people like it or not, pretty much anything A-rod says or does is news. I can buy the idea that he probably didn’t mean it as a direct shot at Jeter. But A-rod has to be smarter than that and understand that he is not going to get the benefit of the doubt on ANYTHING so he should just shut up.

61. YankeesLuv March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Okay Pete I don’t know, did Arod steal your car or something cause you seem to be going out of your way now to take shots at him lately. Some of your comments to posters have been a little on the mean side too. I’m out for now, don’t want to get yelled at or called names by Pete.

62. Redding March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

“I wish (Reyes) was leading off on our team, playing on our team.”

So what happens to Johnny Damon… one of the only guys who has stood by A-Rod in his 4 years here?

So he managed to throw TWO people under the bus. Amazing.

63. ohgodno March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

sigh

64. Colin March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

i wish the yankees had reyes, too. while i doubt he intended to imply that he wished reyes could take jeter’s place on the team, it’s hard to argue that jeter is a better player in any facet of baseball than reyes. if i was the gm i would make that trade in an instant.

you yankee fans who have elevated jeter into a god are the true nutcases. guy hasn’t had a truly excellent season by superstar standards since 1999.

65. Clare March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

He said he wanted Reyes leading off for his team. Sounds more like a shot at Damon to me. Or, if he was anyone else, it would be an attempt to compliment another player and a nonstory.

66. Sean D March 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

68. Can't Stand Ya March 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Didn’t A-rod realize there was someone from ESPN following him around for 2 weeks and that he should probably lay low on the comments for awhile? That “yankee focus” lasted a long time.

69. Tom March 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm

He is throwing Damon AND Jeter under the bus.

70. Patrick Bateman March 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm

I’d take Reyes. As long as he didn’t dance and the stadium didn’t play that canned “Jose, Jose, Jose” chant.

71. you gotta have faith (bronx zoo 2009) March 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm

“Of course Alex didn’t mean to take a slight at Derek because even A-Rod knows only Jesus can replace Derek at SS, and Jesus ain’t a sure thing himself.”

LOL i feel bad for jeter’s replacement, i really do.

‘UPDATE, 5:31 p.m: Here is what A-Rod said: “I wish (Reyes) was leading off on our team, playing on our team.”’

And I agree w/ Marc, he’s answering a question, so what was the question that was asked ?

73. Scorpio March 3rd, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Maybe A-Rod can talk the Mets into a switch, he can go play 3rd base there with Reyes and we’ll get Wright. Win-win.
He’ll fit right in with Manuel’s “gansta” mojo.

74. NITRO March 3rd, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Isin’t Damon like the only close friend that A-Rod has on the team?

And he throws him under the bus. What a clown.

75. Brian March 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 pm

C’mon Pete. I have the utmost respect for you as a journalist and blogger. But this is really just digging for a story that isn’t there. This is a total non-story. The guy was complimenting Reyes…a friendly comment about a crosstown rival. It had nothing to do with Jeter in any way shape or form. Please don’t fall into the trap of making every story a Jeter v. ARod thing.

76. bdog375 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 pm

I would really not read into this too much. I do not think Alex is smart enough to make a calculated comment. I think he is just speaking of Reyes talent.

77. McAllister March 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Bashing A-Rod for that quote is pathetic…

78. Mike March 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 pm

You really have to marvel at what a tool A-Rod is. It’s like he talks to reporters thinking, “How can I dig myself a deeper hole? Oh, hey! There’s a shovel!”

79. Brandon Witnessed Dwayne Wade pull an MJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Was the question like this

Hey Alex don’t you wish the Yankees had a player like this on thier team

or

Alex what are your thoughts of Jose now after watching him in person ?

A: “I wish (Reyes) was leading off on our team, playing on our team.”’

80. johnny March 3rd, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Alex needs to learn how to speak in public.

81. A-Fraud.. March 3rd, 2009 at 5:44 pm

82. Jason March 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm

There is a reason that Torre said the only friend he has on the team is the bullpen catcher (and even he turned on him in Torre’s book).

A-Rod is not a likable guy. He burns all his bridges at once. Torre is looking smarter and smarter by the day.

83. McAllister March 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm

I am by no means a big A-ROD fan, but ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS?

How is this a swipe at Jeter? Get a life.. seriously, A-Rod said nothing wrong.

84. Brandon Witnessed Dwayne Wade pull an MJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm

What is the big deal ? You telling me gun to thier head (quoting Maddog) that no Yankee fan after watching Jose Reyes wouldn’t want him on this team ever ? EVER ?

85. Can't Stand Ya March 3rd, 2009 at 5:46 pm

He can compliment Reyes without saying “I wish he was leading off for the yankees.” Especially when he knows he’s under public scrutiny and was just talking about his TEAMMATES as a FAMILY. You don’t tell somebody, “I wish Jon Stewart was my older brother” without throwing your big bro under the bus. He’s an idiot. He’s the Bernie Madoff of baseball.

86. Chris N March 3rd, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Geez, you people are so sensitive when it comes to stuff this guy says or stuff said about Jeter. Give me a break. I bet you Jeter would say he would want Reyes playing on his team or leading off for his team too. Talk about inventing controversy.

87. 4time March 3rd, 2009 at 5:46 pm

There is a reason that Jeter dislikes A-Rod and only puts up a front to shut the media up.

Jeter is the man, A-Rod is a clown.

88. John in Ohio March 3rd, 2009 at 5:47 pm

He really needs to be sent for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.

He’s just really a dumb a$$.

There’s no getting around it.

89. Zolio March 3rd, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Jeter should say he wishes he had David Wright or Chipper on the team.

90. Lara08 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:48 pm

You guys crack me up with this defending Pete thing. As if Pete is above criticism. I’d say Pete (and the media) deserve even more criticism than the athletes they cover.

They are fair game. Their bias, their words, their intent, their mistakes. They, by their position, hold a certain bit of power and influence that is to be taken seriously. They have a responsibility just as much as the athlete. In fact even more so because of the ethics that go with being a journalist.

The media, even sports media, should have their every word criticized; there should be skepticism just like with the government. So all this “blame the media” whining is silly because being critical is exactly what people should do when it comes to the media. And as far as I’m concerned every journalist knows this. They just don’t like it.

91. Brandon Witnessed Dwayne Wade pull an MJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:48 pm

‘Alex needs to learn how to speak in public.’

No he doesn’t, fans just need to learn not to take 2 lines as a definite swipe. Too much BS going on to do that.

Alex don’t you hate your kids sometimes ?

A: I wish I never had kids at times.

He wants a friend on his team. So what. Maybe he wants him to play second. Phil is absolutely right about the lengths you will go to take shots at A-Rod. You’ve been doing so since you started this blog. Its says more about you than it does about A-Rod.

If the quote is true then A-Rod is the all time Foot-In-Mouth Champion.
He pisses off Damon as the lead off hitter and Jeter as the shortstop and the season isn’t even close to being started.
What else can he possibly do to stir the pot ?

All you writers are the same. Just love to create controversy to draw attention to yourselves.

99. Matt M March 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm

This is the same guy who left the All-Star game in his own ballpark in the 5th inning to go visit Madonna, while Jeter stayed until 2 AM and the 14th inning signing autographs and cheering on his team.

In baseball circles, Jeter is beloved– they will take him 100 out of 100 times over ARoid.

100. johnny March 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm

I agree, the quite is harmless but he needs to understand that everything he says will be heavily scrutinized these days.

He has to be more away of what he says. Even the slightest thing will get picked up on and none of us want that.

101. Matt March 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm

God, everyone shut the hell up. A-rod was being dumb and Pete is being unfair. All a story like this does is make more people boo A-rod when he comes to bat, which, unlike popular opinion, makes him do worse, and hence make the team do worse. Even if A-rod says or does something dumb, can we ignore it so as to prevent the dumb hating on a Yankee. Whether you like it or not, A-rod is on the team for a long long time after this, so let’s learn to deal with him, alright?

102. Lara08 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm

“Of course Alex didn’t mean to take a slight at Derek because even A-Rod knows only Jesus can replace Derek at SS, and Jesus ain’t a sure thing himself.”

LOL i feel bad for jeter’s replacement, i really do.

————————

They say you never want to be the man after THE MAN. Its definitely the case for the new SS. Its sad that anything short of drooling over Jeter is seen as being a traitor and ungrateful for what he’s done for the team.

103. The Gritty Gutty G. Love March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Arod’s a moron folks. Just face up to it. Don’t defend him. He’s a moron.

In a matter of months I’ve gone from being a huge fan and defender of his to now admitting he’s a moron.

You can still cheer for him when he hits, but never let it slip your mind that you’re watching a grade A moron who will make more money in his life than all of us together.

It’s sad because you know this comment about Reyes comes from Arod’s insecurities about being liked. He wants Jose to love him and dance with him in the dugout so he threw roses at his feet today.

When Arod grows up he’ll realize you don’t need to always attempt to say the perfect thing at every moment.

He reminds me of a guy who is constantly trying to get his date into the sack by charming the pants off her at all times.

It’s slimy.

104. RhapsodyInBlue March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Yeah and we need Wright on our team.

105. Andy from Toms River, NJ March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I agree that this is not meant to be a shot at Jeter. Really kind of silly. I also agree that A-Rod might not have the ability to realize some might take his comment as a shot before saying this. I think it’s even more absurd he had to clarify. I think he was just complimenting Reyes.

106. BJK March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Oh right, maybe he wants him to play second and lead off. Then he’s not insulting Jeter, he’s just insulting Damon & Cano.

You’d think by now A-Rod would think before he speaks. I’m rooting for the guy, he’s ours for 9 more years, but it’d be nice if he made it a little easier for us to pull for him.

107. Eastport March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

The funniest part of this is that I’m sure A-Rod wanted to take a subtle swipe at Jeter intentionally, yet he ended up taking the swipe at Johnny Damon who is his only friend on the team

LOL you cannot make this stuff up/

108. Ed - 2009 season can't start soon enough March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

“What is the big deal ? You telling me gun to thier head (quoting Maddog) that no Yankee fan after watching Jose Reyes wouldn’t want him on this team ever ? EVER ?”

Agreed. Name **one** Yankee fan that doesn’t want him on our team? Imagine with him and Gardner on bases, that’s 2 threats that pitchers gotta look out for.

109. Fred Flintstone March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

the reality is, its not what a-rod meant, its how it looks in public. when derek jeter is your shortstop, you don’t mention wanting another shortstop even if (as probably was the case here) a-rod was complimenting another player’s abilities (i don’t think he even thought about what position the guy plays). its a consistent lack of having any clue about how to conduct yourself in public.

110. Patrick March 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

A little bit of an overreaction if you ask me. Sounds like A-rod was just complimenting Reyes.

wow. alex really needs to have one of his advisers tell him to boycott the media for some time. that’s a very silly comment to make. and i use the word silly like it would be silly to drop an atomic bomb.

jeter is the one guy who has equivalent if not more start power than arod. he’s the one guy who can make arod more comfortable. and now arod takes a shot at him? wow.

116. Juggy March 3rd, 2009 at 5:54 pm

I really like A-Rod as a baseball player and will allow for many of his personal flaws because I only care about his baseball abilities.. I also think everyone on this blog is well aware that Pete A. does not like Arod and takes every opportunity possible to make more of a situation against him than is reasonable..

That being said, A-Rod is as dumb as a rock and maybe the reason he is so good at baseball is that nothing else inhabits that head. Two unintentional swipes with that comment.. He just isn’t a thinker, but I’m sure Jeter and Damon wouldn’t take kindly to those comments.

117. Elizabeth March 3rd, 2009 at 5:54 pm

I love how people assume that Alex and Derek aren’t buddies. Unless you ARE one of them, that’s sheer speculation. Not fact.

As far as reporting this non-news, I don’t necessarily mind it on the blog–although I could do without the inference–but if it shows up in a newspaper, there’s a problem.

120. joe March 3rd, 2009 at 5:55 pm

wow, even when A-Rod compliments someone, people turn on him. He should go hide under a rock.

121. Can't Stand Ya March 3rd, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Of course every yankee fan wants Reyes on the team. And we are allowed to say that as a fan. But when the star player who was just exposed as a fraud in everything he does, then comes out and says his team is family only to later say “I wish someone else was on the team” it makes you roll your eyes and say Here we go again. The guy is a moron.

122. CaptainsCorner March 3rd, 2009 at 5:56 pm

The media has to get off his jock already..It is a joke and just makes the media or NY media look like nut cases. How they are obsessed with him and they listen and document every single word that he says. If Ortiz said he wishes that Cano was on his team would that be a big story how he is knocking the smurf who plays for Boston?? Nope..It is called a compliment!!!!

123. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here March 3rd, 2009 at 5:56 pm

127. Doreen March 3rd, 2009 at 5:58 pm

This whole “what did ARod do/say today” stuff is getting stupider by the minute.

Pete is just reporting, but since this is a blog, also makes an interesting comment of his own. That’s the way it works here and always has. Why do people still get upset by this?

Alex Rodriguez is missing a clue. I won’t say he’s clueless, because I don’t really know him, but he’s definitely a beat or two off the music. I have no doubt that his intentions were good with this statement – a compliment towards Reyes. But he doesn’t think before he speaks. I don’t take it as a swipe against Jeter or Damon, because of ARod’s history of consistently putting his foot in his mouth. I doubt Damon or Jeter is taking it the wrong way either.

This is just getting to be nonsensical.

In fact, I resisted an entire day of ARod posts yesterday. I should have continued today, except this is kind of amusing today. There seems to be very little middle ground – either you’re a Pete apologist or an ARod apologist and never the twain shall meet. Sigh. :)

128. Lara08 March 3rd, 2009 at 5:59 pm

In 2004 Reyes played 43 games at 2nd base. His .980 fielding % at 2nd base is about the same as Cano’s. Could the Yanks use a 2nd baseman who walks 66 times vs the 26 times Cano walks? 56 stolen bases vs 2?

But before we give up on Cano, know that Reyes’ 2005 season was pretty much identical to Cano’s 2008 campaign.

137. Mike March 3rd, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Arod could find a cure for cancer and people would say what took you so long. If he donated $10 million to charity he’d be called cheap for not donating more. He can’t win.

—————————

Doreen I don’t buy that for a minute. Sometimes, if people look hard enough they will see people who have common sense; those people often aren’t defending A-Rod as much as they are calling people out on their own hypocrisy and double standards.

Ex: Having the audacity to say “MLB dropped the ball, the test results never should have come out, or steroids have been around since the 70s.” is translated as “Its not A-Rod’s fault he took steroids.”

Neither has anything to do with the other but if you’re not treating A-Rod like he lured your child into the back of a white van with a piece of candy then you’re an apologist.

139. DT March 3rd, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I think this daily Arod hit needs a adverstising sponsor. Think of the possibilites. Maybe even Alex could do the voice over…

CaptainsCorner,

100% agree.

I think I would trade A-rod for Wright. A-rod’s better, but not by much. Wright is a fantastic player, and I think would fit in well with the team. It would get A-rod off our hands and end all the controversy around him that takes away attention from the rest of the team.

150. AndrewYF March 3rd, 2009 at 6:11 pm

155. Russell NY March 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Wright would be happier on the Yankees. Instead he is on a ballclub built around Latin ballplayers selling naming rights to bankrupt stadiums and being the only person to give out English recaps after the games.

156. darkmoonfire March 3rd, 2009 at 6:23 pm

Yeah no doubt about it. I wish ARod was on the same team as Reyes.

I’d swap ARod for Wright in an heartbeat.

Sadly… this won’t happen.

ARod: shut your mouth, play baseball. It’s really that simple.

No more photo ops with your kids to make you look wholesome, no more stunts of any kind.

The season hasn’t even started yet. There’s far more ARod TV Novella yet to come.

Jeter over Reyes? What, pray tell, are you people smoking?

161. Doreen March 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Lara08 -

That’s why I said “very little” middle ground. I do realize that there are some here who have common sense (and I hope to count myself among them) who don’t think ARod is a terrible human being, but a seriously flawed individual (as many of us are – well, maybe not so seriously – :) ). And I have a great regard for Pete. He does a wonderful job here. I don’t care whether he likes ARod or not and it doesn’t bother me that he takes shots at him – Alex kinda deserves at least some of it. I may be wrong, but I think Pete gets a kick out of pushing some buttons around here. And maybe that’s not PC, but, this is entertainment here, isn’t it?

So, next ARod posting, I’ll read, but not post. There really is NOTHING

166. Bob Mac March 3rd, 2009 at 6:38 pm

I wish Reyes was on the team. I would find a place to play him–say centerfield. If anyone else had said that it would not be an issue.
Pete, I have never criticized you, but I think this criticism is a reach. Further, why mention a Wright trade today? We get it–he is no buddy of the reporters nor is he good as choosing his words. He is, however, an integral part of the team, and from my limited observations, gets along with the other players.

167. JimmyH March 3rd, 2009 at 6:42 pm

“It happened Tuesday night on the very first play of Manuel’s tenure, and maybe his most important moment. When Reyes’ hamstring tightened as he ran down to first base, Manuel insisted on pulling the player from the game. Reyes wanted to play.
There were grimaces, theatrics, a spontaneous meltdown of teenage proportions.
We all saw Reyes’ tantrum, yanking his shirt out of his pants and storming into the clubhouse. What we didn’t see was Manuel chasing after Reyes into the back room, quietly but assertively dressing him down.” NY Daily News 6/18/08

No, I don’t want Reyes on the Yankees.

168. Harold March 3rd, 2009 at 6:45 pm

The point isn’t whether he meant it as a slight to Jeter or not. Like Pete said, GIVEN HIS HISTORY WITH JETER (as well as his recent history with a certain PED admission), he shouldn’t go anywhere near there. No where close to that vicinity.

A-rod is the male version of Britney spears. An absolute self-destructing PR nightmare. Only counting whats happened after the PED admission:
1) Admitting that Selena Roberts wasn’t arrested
2) Getting picked up by said steroid providing cousin
3) The almost surreal scene with his ex-wife bringing the kids to the DR team facility and poising for pics with the kids (considering no other players had their kids there)
4) Saying he wants Jose Reyes on the Yankees (in #2′s SS position)

169. Yankee2123 March 3rd, 2009 at 6:46 pm

It could be taken as a shot against Jeter, and Damon, if you want to look at it that way. Arod has a serious case of foot in mouth disease.

170. EricNS March 3rd, 2009 at 6:48 pm

A-Rod needs to put his mind in gear before he puts in mouth in motion.

171. Jay March 3rd, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Jeter gets away with NEVER coming to the defense of A-Rod — except when he looks like a complete ass by not doing so — and gets away with it, despite the fact that defending all of his teammates and maintaining harmony on the team are among his duties as captain. A-Rod compliments another player one time and gets excoriated.

The Yankees win year after year before Jeter becomes captain — and don’t win once EVER with Jeter as captain, and nobody peeps a word of criticism. A-Rod says something positive about another player and he gets criticized to the high heavens.

I will be SO glad when Jeter is no longer on the Yankees. I very seriously doubt that the Yankees will EVER win a championship with Jeter as the starting shortstop and captain — for three reasons (1) because of his defensive shortcomings at shortstop, (2) because he does a HORRENDOUS job as captain despite what everybody says, and (3) because he doesn’t contribute value to the team remotely APPROACHING what he’s paid:

According to FanGraphs, last year, Jeter was worth $16.6 million versus $26.1 million for Reyes — despite the fact that Jeter was being paid $21.6 million versus $4.4 million for Reyes.

172. jeterboy March 3rd, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Geeeezz Alex.. ur making it hard for me to support you with a comment like that.. not smart.. just not smart!

173. Kevin March 3rd, 2009 at 6:53 pm

176. Michael March 3rd, 2009 at 6:57 pm

This is getting ridiculous, had he said “No, I don’t want reyes..” we’d be saying the exact opposite things.

Try treating A-Rod like the great Yankee he’ll be… would you ever post this about Yogi, Mick, Joe D…. Paulie, Bernie….?

Exactly, he’s a Yankee end of story.

177. Yogis March 3rd, 2009 at 6:58 pm

If anyone in the world knows that Jeter is all time Yankee Short Stop, don’t you think it’s ARod? He was a hell of a lot better shortstop than Reyes when he came to the Yanks and found he was no longer a shortstop. Don’t you think he just wanted the speed and the bat on his team and knew nothing short of an act of God would move Jeter off of Short?

179. Erik A March 3rd, 2009 at 7:01 pm

It amazes me that after the huge steroid scandal that just surrounded A-Rod, people can jump on his back for something as miniscule and meaningless as this. He didn’t mean a thing by it! I wish Jose Reyes played for the Yankees, and you can be DAMN sure I’m not disrespecting Derek Jeter.

180. Golden March 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 pm

A-Rod needs to just shut the hell up. It’s a moronic thing to say, period.

181. Coach March 3rd, 2009 at 7:08 pm

anyone saying Pete is being unfair is an idiot. Alex is socially retarted, and if you defend him for slighting one of the best players in the history of the Yankees, you are worse than Alex.

182. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 3rd, 2009 at 7:13 pm

I’d have to disagree with him, actually.

But then while I think he’s a pretty good player, I’m not really Jose Reyes fan. Something about him really irritates me, lol

183. Therston March 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm

I think it has finally gotten to the point that any Article, Blog, Etc. with the Name; A-Rod in it…I will just ignore.
It will be much easier that way.
A-Rod has a problem with public speaking and the Media waits for every word that comes from his mouth.
Only because I am tired of reading these things and would rather read Baseball stuff.
Maybe if all Yankee fans did this…the A-Rod off the field stuff would diminish in some way.

184. Benny Blanco March 3rd, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Daily News headline tomorrow. AROD WANTS REYES.

185. Patrick March 3rd, 2009 at 7:20 pm

A-rod for Wright straight up? Absolutely.

Wright will never be as good as A-rod but he is one of the top hitters in the league. I’m sick and tired of A-rod and we have to deal with this nonsense for how many years?

186. Benny Blanco March 3rd, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Arod is the media’s meal ticket. Its like taking candy from a baby. Why write insiteful and inspirational articles when they can wait for Arod to open his mouth. This is too easy!

187. Paulie March 3rd, 2009 at 7:22 pm

I was having a tough day, and then I read this post. It made me laugh out loud – which I needed. I can know remind myself that no matter how hard times are right now, I’d rather be who I am as oppose to being Alex Rodriguez.

188. Yankee2123 March 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Reyes scored twice and stole a base. Rodriguez smiled when asked about the way the Mets star runs the bases and said the Yankees could use that speed.
“I wish he was leading off on our team and playing on our team,” Rodriguez said. “That’s fun to watch, any time you have that type of speed. We have a guy in (Brett) Gardner. That’ll be fun. That’s probably the most fun you can have — watching a guy like that run.”

This is the entire quote from SI.com. He actually pays a compliment to Gardner, should Melky be offended?

189. GGTM March 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Well now that we have heard A-Rod tell us how stupid he was to do steroids, I guess he just has to prove to us time and again that he is DENSE … thanks A-Rod … we know you are DENSE, DENSE, DENSE … now can we just have some baseball!

190. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing March 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm

“In a matter of months I’ve gone from being a huge fan and defender of his to now admitting he’s a moron.”

Call me cynical, I think that might actually be the desired outcome of stories like this.

He’s always put his foot in his mouth – there is absolutely nothing new about that.

We need a “move along, nothing to see here” emoticon, lol.

191. trisha - As long as you're in pinstripes, Kei, I've got your back. March 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Actually when I read the comment two things went through my mind. First is that Arod always wants to be loved and perhaps is trying to bond with someone on the team. Second, I immediately looked at the box score from the DR game because if Reyes had a great game, that would certainly at least better explain why Arod targetted Reyes, even if it was only meant to be a gratuitous or ingratiating comment.

Reyes went 2 for 5, walked, scored two runs, stole third base, and turned two DPs.

I am convinced that there was no intent to slight either Jeter or Damon.

192. YankeeDiva March 3rd, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Oh for the love of God GROW THE HELL UP PETE!!

Alex didn’t say he wanted Reyes to replace either Jeter or Damon, he acknowledged that Reyes is a good player and a good lead off and would be an asset to the team.

At least you had enough ‘ethnics’ to update us with the real quote.

193. JF March 3rd, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Reyes is stupid overrated.

194. Chris March 3rd, 2009 at 7:34 pm

You truly are unbelievable. WHO WOULDNT WANT REYES ON THEIR TEAM??????????? Your man hatred for ARod is extremely pathetic. Move on Pete we get it. You don’t like him, WE DON’T CARE

195. Kevin March 3rd, 2009 at 7:39 pm

I also wish we had scott brosius.

196. feefoo March 3rd, 2009 at 7:41 pm

reyes can play second base too….. OMG HE WANTS CANO OUT OF THE TEAM!

197. Jay March 3rd, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Amandia,

I’ve been trying to give up my addiction to the Yankees and being a Yankee fan for years now. But I think I’ve found a middle ground — to like and root for most of the players, but to root against the Yankees.

Is it really fun to root for a dim-witted Goliath whose captain doesn’t do his job, but is portrayed by all as a demi-god? I am trying for all I’m worth, Amandia, to root for the Red Sox or anyone else who does intelligent things instead of the near continuous stupidity that is the Yankees.

So thanks for the suggestion, Amanda. I have been trying lately to root for the Mets and the Red Sox (and have had some success transferring my loyalty to the Mets, but have found it harder to do so with the Red Sox — although I think they’ve been run with as much intelligence and thoughtfulness as the Yankees have been run with ignorance and stupidity). I appreciate the reminder and will try harder, Amanda.

Meanwhile, you enjoy rooting for the Yankees. If you want to be consistent, you be sure and root for Goliath against David when you’re reading Bible stories, too. It should be just about as much fun as rooting for the Yankees in the end.

198. Vince March 3rd, 2009 at 7:57 pm

“I wish he was leading off on our team and playing on our team,” Rodriguez said. “That’s fun to watch, any time you have that type of speed. We have a guy in [Brett] Gardner. That’ll be fun. That’s probably the most fun you can have — watching a guy like that run.”

Not as bad when you read the FULL quote.

199. Juggy March 3rd, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Just the fact that you would even write in print that you think Arod for Wright is a good deal means you’re an idiot..

This is like when you watch Fox News hoping for an unbiased opinion :p

200. Therston March 3rd, 2009 at 8:01 pm

“Not as bad when you read the FULL quote.”

201. Januz March 3rd, 2009 at 8:02 pm

I wonder why Mr. Jinx (Number 13), did not suggest Sizemore (We could use a top-flight centerfielder) or Pujols (ANYONE could use his bat), or Mauer (To take Posada’s place, think we could use the BEST catcher in baseball?), or fellow DOMINICAN Manny (All he would cost is money)? This was another deliberate attack on Derek Jeter, and this guy cannot stop himself. He is a self-destructive, narcissistic, individual who cares about nothing not even himself (Why else would he allow his cousin the pusher, to drive him during Spring Training? Why else does he use his ex and kids, as part of a damage control publicity campaign?). He reminds me of Adam “Pacman” Jones, who just cannot keep away from his entourage and strip clubs.
The best thing that could happen to him, is to seek out some kind of psychriatric treatment, to find out why he is the way he is. Maybe, then he will be able to function off the field like a normal human being.

202. Gus March 3rd, 2009 at 8:02 pm

This is annoying who cares. You know A Rod was not dissing Jeter .Alex just enjoys Reyes. And BTW maybe when Joses Contract expires and Jeter goes to left we will have him. But Pete your reaction to this is annoying . I love you in a non gay way and I know you got to report it but to spin this into a negative is annoying but hey its your Job

203. Amandla March 3rd, 2009 at 8:11 pm

In a bizarro way, Arod is Biden to Jeter’s Obama, the baseball version.

Peter, pay no mind. This is your BLOG. Your journal. If anyone doesn’t like the contents, they can find another or start their own.

204. Mr. Faded Glory March 3rd, 2009 at 8:14 pm

He didn’t say “I wish he played shortstop for the Yankees.” He said he’d like to see him leading off for the Yankees.

So… of course the media doesn’t make this a slight against Johnny Damon, who… leads off. Jeter vs. A-Rod makes better press.

205. Amandla March 3rd, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Jay
If you’re trying to give up your addiction to the Yankees then you might want avoid this blog. That might help you kick the habit. Lohud has a Mets blog where you might feel more at home.

206. Summer March 3rd, 2009 at 8:36 pm

A-Rod was a shortstop too before he came to play with the Yankees. If he himself was willing to move from SS to 3B, maybe he’s statement carries the implicit assumption that Reyes would move somewhere else, too.

207. Zell March 3rd, 2009 at 8:41 pm

This is Pete’s job..this is why everyone comes to visit his site. He needs to post up this kind of information, because thats what draws the readers attention. Lay off Pete!

I have no problems with what A-Rod said at all, but I guess people like to twist his words. All he was really saying was that Reyes is a great player, and he would like him on his team. Seriously…who wouldn’t? The only reason why he is getting bashed is because DJ plays short for the Yankees. I understand why some people are getting upset though…but I think everyone is taking every little thing out of his mouth and making it much bigger then it really is.

As for having Wright instead of Alex..I rather have the circus. Wright has proved to be a choke artist himself down the stretch. haha. Rodriguez is a far better player.

Kevin

208. Jay March 3rd, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Amandia,

Thanks, again, for your suggestion. Like I said, I’m TRYING to give it up. My knowledge is about the Yankees. I’ve wasted far more hours watching the Yankees and analyzing their players and prospects than I care to think about. So I choose to post about things I think I know about.

I think it’s therapeutic for me to vent my frustrations about a team in which I have a significant emotional investment. And I actually harbor hopes that one day their stupidity will be a thing of the past. After all, without an idiot like Torre at the helm, it became easier. When Jeter is gone and A-Rod’s bloated contract is a thing of the past, it should become easier still — assuming they haven’t gone out and added more idiotic, suicidal contracts in the meantime.

Meanwhile, it’s fun to watch Team Goliath and enjoy the All-Stars the ownership has put together — even as they’ve all but eliminated their chances of winning it all against an intelligently run team with a far lower payroll like the Red Sox and, possibly, even the Mets.

But thank you again for your excellent suggestion, Amandia. I think it’s a good one. And I suspect that as I become more knowledgeable about other teams, I will indeed begin to post on their forums, too.

I do wonder one thing, however, Amandia. How is it that you’re able to offer such good ideas to me at the same time that you seem to be able to endure uttter stupidity on the part your team and its Captain Intangibles without uttering a peep? I guess we all have blind spots — me with my difficulty giving up rooting for a dim-witted Goliath team and you with your inability to see utter stupidity on the part of your team when it’s right there in front of your eyes enabling its arch rival to kick your team’s ass again and again despite having a far lower payroll and a tradition (even a curse) of being a loser.

209. Jay March 3rd, 2009 at 8:49 pm

P.S. By the way, Amandia, one of the things that makes it harder to give up rooting for the Yankees as a team is that I think Brian Cashman MAY be relatively sharp — despite one stupid move after another in selection of pitchers via trade and free agency before this year.

But since his decisions seem to be frequently overruled — like they were to give A-Rod around $27 million a year for 10 years when nobody else was willing to pay him $20 million a year for that same period, that may be moot.

210. Jay March 3rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm

P.P.S. And one more thing, Amandia. It’s like a good soap opera — the best one I’ve ever seen actually. And like any good soap opera, there are not only characters on it that you pull for, but others that you don’t like at all, or hope very much will fail.

It’s not lost on me how unfairly the Yankees are portrayed in the media or how hypocritical, highly paid, turn a blind eye to steroids when it serves his purposes and rail against it when that serves him best Bud Selig does everything he can to hurt the Yankees in every way that he can.

But when the Yankees allow Selig and the rest of the Yankee hating universe succeed with their stupidity while Yankee fans don’t see it and even compliment it when it comes from Jeter, just as they did with Torre for years, that’s when it gets too painful at times to watch.

211. Steve in Jersey March 3rd, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Pete,

I come to this blog to hear everything regarding the major league Yankees. Good or bad.

Don’t let the apologists censor the news you bring to the table.

212. GreenBeret7 March 3rd, 2009 at 9:13 pm

How is this any different than the players like Jeter, Rodriguez and Chamberlain and others calling players like Teixeira, Burnett and Sabathia near mid-season and telling them how much they’d like to have them playing with them? I’m sure good ol’ guy Giambi and the rest of the pitching staff loved that.

213. Johnny Stamos March 3rd, 2009 at 9:37 pm

I have to admit after reading this I thought to myself that he really didn’t need to say this. Then after I read his comments that he actually said it is much more acceptable. This was taken completely out of context and it is embarrassing the lengths certain people will go to make what he says a controversy. Say what you want A-Rod no matter what you do it will be talked about so who cares.

214. Juggy March 3rd, 2009 at 9:37 pm

It’s different because Pete dislikes Arod, and he likes Jeter.. See how easy that is?

I don’t think writing about what Arod said was the problem.. I think it was the heavy bias against arod and the assumption of what he meant and the translation of it into it being a slight to his teamates is what some people feel is bad journalism.. Whatever, I like the blog.. Pete’s Arod manhate comes with it. Live on ;)

215. JohnBlacksox ( 24 + 1 ) March 3rd, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Nine more years of this embarrassment. Unbelievable. Thanks, Hank.

216. The Ghost March 3rd, 2009 at 9:59 pm

The Yankees don’t win another WS until Arod goes out for the year a la Jeremy Shockey and they win with his replacement.

217. YankFanDave March 3rd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

If he doesn’t talk to the press, it’s a problem. If he talks to the press, it’s a problem. When he doesn’t think through his comments in advance, its a problem. If he thinks through his comments in advance, its a problem (I seem to recall plenty of folks commenting on how “phony” he can be, how “practiced” he can be, etc… Damn him, can’t he complement another player right way. And damn all those players, managers. coaches and announcers that have said they would love to have Jeter on their team over the years. Lighten up already.

So the guy is not the most articulate and thoughtful communicator. He is one hell of a ball player and that is what he is paid for, that is what his job is and that is where I want his talent concentrated.

218. Amol March 3rd, 2009 at 10:13 pm

If you must take it as a slight against anyone, I think it’s more of a slight against Damon than Jeter. He did, after all, say that he wished Reyes were leading off, not that he wished Reyes was playing shortstop. After all, A-Rod knows better than most that talented shortstops can switch to new positions when they come to the Yankees.

219. scott March 3rd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Not sure if anyone else pointed this out in the comments but maybe Pete should post the full quote next time where he compliments a Yankee player on his team.

“I wish he was leading off on our team and playing on our team,” Rodriguez said. “That’s fun to watch, any time you have that type of speed. We have a guy in [Brett] Gardner. That’ll be fun. That’s probably the most fun you can have — watching a guy like that run.”

220. YankFanDave March 3rd, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Thank you Scott.

221. Peyton Horton March 3rd, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Let’s not get to crazy, Wright is good but A’Rod is the best in the game, wright is not top 20 player in the game

222. Chris March 3rd, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Intended innocently? Probably. But where was his head?
He might as well have told reporters, when he was married, that he’d really like to “bleep” that hot chick who sits in the front row at every game, and then calling his neighbor to go tell his wife that he didn’t mean it like it sounded.

Reminds me of what former Texas Gov. Ann Richards said about Geo. Bush: “He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.”

223. Chris March 3rd, 2009 at 10:58 pm

“So the guy is not the most articulate and thoughtful communicator.”

Just like a former president.

224. Rob March 3rd, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Why does he even talk. Sometimes he gets a raw deal, but this time he earned it. What a dumb idiot. I would even trade him for Joe Dugan’s grave.

225. Steve March 3rd, 2009 at 11:11 pm

This is unbelievable.

Jeter is one of my favorite Yankees, but when ARod was on the Rangers, I was dying for the Yankees to sign him. I thought “imagine the possibilities.” In no way was I slighting Jeter… it was a fantasy and it was about figuring out a way to make it work. You know what? That’s what happened, as the Yankees signed Arod and he moved to 3B, allowing us to have both Jeter and ARod.

I can’t believe the way people want to crucify this guy. For all of the people calling him an idiot, I would like for them to be under the same intense criticism, with cameras rolling 24/7 and journalists waiting on bated breath. Let’s see the winners that come of their mouths.

I still don’t know what ARod did to make people hate him so much. He doesn’t beat his children or women, carry around semi-automatic weapons, deal heroin, drive drunk, or get involved in brawls at bars. He doesn’t take plays off, he hustles, and he’s very involved with the Boys and Girls Club down in Miami.

Yet, he is vilified as if he is the scum of the earth. I just don’t get it.

I’m not saying he is the nicest person in the world, and perhaps he doesn’t always say the right things, but his comments are never malicious.

Some of you guys are just haters in every sense of the word.

Oh, and for those of you that want to trade ARod under the theory that we didn’t need 40 HR superstar to win from 1996-2000, please research the difference between correlation and causation.

226. The Ghost March 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 pm

If you must take it as a slight against anyone, I think it’s more of a slight against Damon than Jeter. He did, after all, say that he wished Reyes were leading off, not that he wished Reyes was playing shortstop.
_______

Yeah but as per Joe Torre everyone on the team hates Damon anyway

227. Yankee Jay March 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Pete, I would do that deal in a heartbeat. I know it doesn’t make sense numbers wise, but i would still do it. I am just so sick of the drama.

228. Ralphie March 4th, 2009 at 12:19 am

Yea A-Rod says stupid things and he should not have said it, but don’t you guys think your taking this a little too far.Jesus Christ, don’t crucify the guy. We all know he says stupid things cause he’s trying to be nice and fit in.

229. 213 Area Code March 4th, 2009 at 4:31 am

Pete:
Please make it the poll question to the right: Would you trade…straight up, $ considerations notwithstanding et.al. blahyadda? Send the Curse of Arod to ChittiField.

230. napred March 4th, 2009 at 7:44 am

Why dont the papers make a big deal about Wright saying that he liked Jeter playing to his left? Was that a stab at reyes? When will this A-rod crap stop!

231. pete March 4th, 2009 at 9:02 am

peter, for god’s sake, just shut up. He didn’t say i want him replacing jeter or damon (though either would be a totally awesome scenario), he said i want him on my team. Didn’t jeter say he wanted Sabathia on his team after facing him in a game last year? Was he taking a shot at one of the then-current yankee starters?

232. Jersey March 4th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Wow. Hrm. What an enormously retarded post about nothing.

233. circus lover March 4th, 2009 at 11:54 am

now I’m just coming to see Pete’s rabid frothing Arod hate. It’s funny to me, seeing a grown man so unhinged by a ballplayer.

Oh, if you grow some journalistic integreity, here’s the whole quote, Pete. Maybe you want to post it? Nah, that wouldn’t be in your interest.

FROM ESPN: “Reyes scored twice and stole a base. Rodriguez smiled when asked about the way the Mets star runs the bases and said the Yankees could use that speed.

“I wish he was leading off on our team and playing on our team,” Rodriguez said. “That’s fun to watch, any time you have that type of speed. We have a guy in [Brett] Gardner. That’ll be fun. That’s probably the most fun you can have — watching a guy like that run.””

It’s truly amazing the fixes you make up to put this guy into. It really is.

234. saucY March 4th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

lol… it’s beginning to read out like a poorly written comedy at this point…

235. Girardi March 4th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Steve:

I still don’t know what ARod did to make people hate him so much. He doesn’t beat his children or women, carry around semi-automatic weapons, deal heroin, drive drunk, or get involved in brawls at bars. He doesn’t take plays off, he hustles, and he’s very involved with the Boys and Girls Club down in Miami.

Yet, he is vilified as if he is the scum of the earth. I just don’t get it.

Right on, Steve. I’ve emailed other members of the media about this very thing — how it is they, not he, who are making Alex the story. And when Haters and IDIOT NYY “fans” buy into it — and BOO THEIR OWN PLAYER — it just creates this vicious, destructive circle.

Of course, Ham is a Hater and a Pats/Sox fan. So he has a vested interest in sowing as much discord as possible — not only because it helps the Yanks lose, but also because it increases readership.

It’s just mindblowing how many of you IDIOT NYY “fans” can’t see through it and somehow think you’re helping your team by booing and hating certain Yankees. Morons.

Girardi should institute another team dietary policy. I’m thinking, “No Ham allowed in the clubhouse.”

236. Trade A-Rod for Wright March 4th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

You would think that will all the advisors a-rod has at least one of them would tell him to think before he speaks. I highly doubt this was a swipe at Jeter and Reyes is a great player but he should know by now that everything he says and does gets dissected and analyzed and talked about everywhere. And why all the hating on Pete? We all know he doesnt like A-Rod, but hes not alone and it is his job to report whats going on with the Yankees. Obviously a huge ordeal will be made about this and I’m sure if he never mentioned it people would be wondering why. I would take David Wright in a heartbeat over A-Rod. Its too bad it will never happen. Omar Minya isnt that stupid.

237. JF March 4th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

I would trade A-Rod and my left . . . foot for Wright. And agree to pay Rod’s salary.

The Mets absolutely love f-ups like Alex, so I’m not sure they wouldn’t go for it. Especially with some cash thrown in.

238. Dan March 4th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Dude, Arod…shut the f@#k up. You are so embarrassing!

239. Rosa March 4th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Arod does not have a way with words. If he had said “Jose is a great young player” it would have been ok.

I would trade Arod for Wright.
I would trade Reyes for Cano. I know this is wishful thinking considering the money involved and the no trade clause.

240. Erica March 5th, 2009 at 12:35 am

I’m so tired of Yankee Fans and the New York Media making Jeter so un-touchable. He is not perfect! Many of you know the Jeter-ERA is just about over and I say thank god. I’m so tired of Jeter’s phony BS..ever wonder why he fights so hard to be so private..what is he really hiding? and yet Alex is wrong for saying he would like to play with a exciting player like Reyes? I wish Jose was leading off for our team too. He is better than Damon and younger with more range than Jeter. Give the guy a break! Yes he says stuff that makes me shake my head at times but so what.I like that about him he is NOT JETER and that is a GOOD thing..Jeter is so boring and lame…and i’m sick of this Alex v. Derek..but Alex is the better player with or without “Boli” and certainly a better SS than Jeter and Reyes combined so get over it.
