It must be nice to have an arm like that

One of the scouts had A.J. Burnett throwing 98 today on his gun. John Harper of the Daily News mentioned that to him.

“Really?” Burnett said with a grin. “I didn’t mean to.”

Meanwhile, here is what Phil Hughes has done this spring:

7.2 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts. He threw three hitless innings today, walking two and fanning four.

Pete, do you think there is even a slight chance that they put Hughes in the 5th spot and Joba back in the bullpen?

  2. BGNYY March 8th, 2009 at 5:32 pm

He will lead the Yankees in wins this year, very excited

  3. Rob Thompson March 8th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Great report Pete. Nice to hear that so many guys are so dominant. I’m worried that with so many dominant arms this year, the yanks won’t get the national credit they deserve for things like Cy Young, all star game, etc. Not that I care, I mean it’s all about the wins this year. I guess it’s a good problem to have, right?

Dammit AJ keep it in your pants until the real games start. And for the love of god Ralph JOBA IS A STARTERRRRR

If I could throw it 98 I’d drop out of grad school.

  6. Billy CC March 8th, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Love what Hughes has done. Really wish YES covered spring training so I could see him. That one game where he pitched on YES wasn’t enough to really see his stuff (although the power curve did look good and different from his old one).

There is no doubt about Burnett’s talent, but he must stay healthy

  7. Billy CC March 8th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

I’ll never understand the “Joba to the bullpen” argument. Just doesn’t make sense to me. I think Al Leiter said it best: “Why shouldn’t the Giants move Lincecum to closer? Or the Rays move Price to closer?” An ace is more valuable

    A.J.Burnett……second coming of Allie Reynolds?

‘If I could throw it 98 I’d drop out of grad school.’

If you could throw it 98 I’d drop down on a knee w/ ring box

  10. Arcobug March 8th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

    I wish I could throw 98 :(

Dont anger Pete with a question like that!

Rebecca if I had only got a few more 98′s at BC I could have gotten into Grad school…

Hope all is well at Fordham.

sharp single through the 1B hole for Robi on a 2-2 pitch.

  14. Ralph March 8th, 2009 at 5:47 pm

Hey Arcobug, why do you think I asked it haha.

  15. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story March 8th, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Brandon: Ah, pues…si tiro la pelota 98 mph, puedo casar un jugador profesional =P (prefiero el futból, pero beisból tambien trabajará)

Coolest thing EVER in the history of Fordham was Bono playing on Friday morning.

I got him throwing 98 twice- only threw about 3 or 4 breaking pitches that were in the 80′s- the rest averaged around 95-98mph

Nate Robertson on the Tigers looked terrible. I not sure if he ever had any velocity but he sure doesnt have any now. it a wonder why the put him in the pen

  19. Brandon, Mr.Pringles: 'It's an acquired skill to play hard' March 8th, 2009 at 5:51 pm

    Olivo ! 5 – 0 !

    LOL

  21. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story March 8th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Brandon: Solamente puedo tirarlo a 30 mph ;_;. No voy a casar nadie.

According to The Kansas City Star, Rodriguez’s club could be looking to fill that hole with Royals infielder Mark Teahen.

The Star, which did not cite any sources on the rumor, said that Royals officials have been brushing off that idea — for now — because Teahen’s versatility has increased his value to the club.

Nate Robinson is a junkballer anyway.

  24. YankeeVIP March 8th, 2009 at 6:02 pm

enough with the is joba a starter discussion.. not worth having

the bigger question is what happens if joba continues to struggle this spring.. do we send him to the minors to work on his stuff.. and let hughes pitch

Which means he wont be coming to the Yanks.

  26. Arcobug March 8th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

If Joba keeps pitching like this he will be in the minors and Hughes will be the fifth starter.

  27. JoeyA March 8th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

The only reason Joba to the bullpen is an argument is because the Yankees brought him in for a short stint in the bullpen, and he was unreal. If Lincecum, Verlander, Sabathia, etc. were thrown in that situation and basically throwing their hardest, they would produce similar results.

The man has 4 pitches he can locate for strikes effectively!

  28. GdaMac March 8th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Keep Joba in the rotation, Hughes will get his chances and in 2010 he will be in the rotation. The future looks very bright with CC, Wang, Joba and Hughes. Plus all the other prospects.

  29. Arcobug March 8th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

Has Ray Durham ever played third base?

  30. Arcobug March 8th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Joba had three (9) strikeout games as a starter last season

  31. Arcobug March 8th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Joba struck out 9 guys in a game three times I mean

  32. Phil March 8th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Joba has more in common with Allie Reynolds than Burnett does.

  33. Rebecca-Optimist Prime...Staying to Write the Story March 8th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I wouldn’t worry about Joba too much. It’s still only 8 March. Power pitchers take longer to get ready than other pitchers.

I’m not saying don’t be a little concerned; I think you should be somewhat concerned, but I think we’re still a ways off from arguing his position in the rotation.

  34. Vince March 8th, 2009 at 6:14 pm

    ^ No.

  35. Vince March 8th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

    * My comment was directed @ Arcobug. No, Ray Durham has never played 3rd base.

  36. Boston Dave March 8th, 2009 at 6:18 pm

    rotoworld.com:

“Angel Berroa drove in four runs with a homer and a double Sunday as the Yankees blasted the Tigers 12-3.

The media is handing Cody Ransom the third-base job in Alex Rodriguez’s absence, but Berroa does have the greater offensive upside of the two, for what it’s worth.”

  37. Phil March 8th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Leone is the best in-house option for 3rd.

  38. Ryan Willard March 8th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

I feel so much better going into the season knowing we have Phil Hughes, hungry and ready to rock. I think he’ll learn a lot from the rotation we have right now, maybe even how to stay healthy…

  39. Boston Dave March 8th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

hate to bring this up but Boston’s bullpen has been lights out in the spring. it’s just ST and it’s only a few games but hopefully it’s not a trend that continues.

  40. m March 8th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

    I got a 98 on a trig test once.

  41. Baseball Mogul March 8th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

    Pete,

Any report on how Brackman and Melancon looked today? Can’t tell much from the box score and recap.

  42. Wang IS Taiwan March 8th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

I would make Joba earn the spot. If Hughes is pitching better by Opening Day, put him in the rotation until Joba out-pitches him. Didn’t the Yanks learn that giving away these starting positions to young pitchers doesn’t work?

  43. David March 8th, 2009 at 7:28 pm

What if Andy Pettitte is healthy and pitching OK in 2009, but Hughes is better. Does Hughes stay in the minors or does Andy move to the bull pen to make room for Phil?

  44. Thomas A. Anderson March 8th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    160 innings > 70 innings

A shutdown reliever is useless if you are trailing 3 runs in the 8th inning anyway.

Mariano Rivera hasn’t done a whole lot in terms of important saves or pitching performances in the postseason since 2005. You know why?

Because the yankees were being killed by the Angels, Tigers, and Indians. He never had a chance.

Why is this such a difficult concept for people to get?

  45. BicSharpie March 8th, 2009 at 9:07 pm

I’ve heard that Joba is maxing out at 90mph with his fastball. If that’s true and he’s not just easing into pitching again, any chance that Hughes takes the fifth spot?
I’m not suggesting that Joba move to the pen. Just that maybe he might need some more seasoning and some humbling in the minors.

  46. lordbyron March 8th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

Hughes is getting better and better, and with CC, AJ and the Arod circus, he’s flying under the radar – and that’s only going to help him be even more productive. As you (Pete) keeps reiterating, he’s still very young and a work in progress. Gotta love his work ethic!

  47. IRA March 9th, 2009 at 12:39 am

Glad Phil Hughes is pitching well Hope he gets a chance this year WAs Hughes throwing 91-92 or up to 94-95? Thanks
