Interested in a blog outing for a Triple-A game this season?

Peter Abraham

A bunch of us attended a Scranton game last season and had a great time. Ron is hoping to organize another game for blog readers this season and asked me to post this:

————

If enough people would again be interested, I’m willing to organize another LoHud Yankees Blog group outing for a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees game this spring/summer at PNC Field, just off I-81 in Moosic, Penn. Last year we had approximately 60 blog readers, family and friends including Pete Abraham attend the outing, and I think everyone would agree it was a great time!

For those who are unfamiliar, PNC Field is about 60 miles from Binghamton, 100 miles from Newark, 110 miles from Philadelphia and 130 miles from State College. The stadium has several group outing venues available, but availability is going fast and the Yankees have increased the minimum number of people necessary to reserve an area on a weekend date.

The best option available for the outing based on dates still available is the Bullpen Field Box which is a nice field-level area in each outfield corner that is under cover, has numerous tables and chairs and several large TVs. A basic package would cost about $30 providing each person a game ticket, all the food you can eat (hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, pasta salad, coleslaw, baked beans, cookies), soda, water and an SWB Yankees cap or program. Adult beverages are also available at extra cost.

Use of the Bullpen Field Box requires a group of 75. The available dates are as follows:

Saturday, May 16, 7:05 versus the Columbus Clippers (Indians)

Sunday, July 5, 5:05 versus the Pawtucket Red Sox (Red Sox)

Saturday, July 18, 7:05 versus the Gwinnett Braves (Braves)

Sunday, August 30, 5:05 versus the Pawtucket Red Sox (Red Sox)

Please note a few things. Pete expressed to me the great time he had at last year’s outing, but due to his work schedule and other commitments he would only be able to attend the July 5 or Aug. 30. I also want to be sure everyone, especially the out of town travelers, know that the July 5 and Aug. 30 dates are Sunday 5:05 starts. Suite availability and Pete’s schedule unfortunately don’t match up very well this year. But if people are interested I think we should consider a date that Pete can attend. After all without the LoHud Blog, we wouldn’t even be discussing a second outing.

Reserving a hospitality area requires commitment to purchase all 75 tickets which I am willing to do, but only if it seems enough people are interested in having the outing. I’d ask anyone interested to Check out the paper and the web tomorrow and feel free to e-mail me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE at yankslifer@yahoo.com with the date(s) best for them and number of tickets they would want. Once I seem to have a consensus I’ll e-mail those interested before I reserve a date and direct everyone how payment can be made. Last year I sent those attending an invoice through PayPal and that seemed to work well for everyone. Please include your LoHud blog posting name in your e-mail to me so once organized I can let everyone know who’s coming.

Last summer a number of people from New York, New Jersey, Maryland and even Virginia came to the outing. Later I’ll provide driving directions and links to hotels and restaurants in the area for those attending.

Thanks to Pete for posting this.

Ron.

I think there were a few people asking about “options” in regards to minor league players.

Here’s a decent site that explains the 40 man roster, options, etc:

    http://www.purplerow.com/2009/.....s-part-two

Melky Cabrera and Dan Giese, I believe, are the 2 most consequential Yankees that are out of options.

  2. dave

I have a couple of comments on petes comments:

One, I find it strange that alex is doing leg exercises, the day of his surgery to repair a problem involving his labrum. Im sure everyone knows by now that the labrum is the cartilage encircling the acetabulum in which lies the head of the femur. Riding a bike, is basically rotating that femur around that socket over and over again. Honestly though, he has some of the best in their field telling him what to do so I wouldnt dream to say they are wrong but it is a bit strange to hear – its VERY strange to hear.

Two, its funny pete used the term muscle memory. I hear it all the time but today, my neuroscience prof said that the term muscle memory is used far too loosely and in reality, has never been proven in the context in which it is used. I thought that was ironic.

Three, correct me if Im wrong but havent the yanks and sox got into multiple brawls over the last decade. i REMEMBER at least two off hand. There definitely has been some intense anger going on at certain points well past the 70s.

  3. Bad Scooter

Mad Dog just said “you don’t want to bat Gardner and Ransom back to back at 8 and 9, that’s two outs every time.”

Believe it or not, he pronounced their names right.

    Re: Tex:

I am so in love with his defense – an he has an incredibly beautiful swing. Bob Klapisch wrote an article on Tex and he said the same thing:

    http://www.northjersey.com/spo.....ssage.html

Anyone who’s watched him in spring training can’t help but notice the grace and beauty of his swing, particularly from the left side. Teixeira is intelligent and mature, and he says if he didn’t understand the predatory nature of New York’s baseball community, he could’ve just as easily signed with the Orioles, who are closer to his home in Severna Park, Md.

Joe Girardi raved about him with Francesca today – said that he’s very inclusive and tries to draw teammates together…..something like that. I need to listen to the interview again later……Tex is better than I ever dreamed……..

  5. WestCoastFan

Hey Pete, how about providing your podcasts outside of itunes as well for those of us who don’t use itunes.

  6. Boston Dave

I wouldn’t say there has been “intense” anger between the Yankees and Sox.

Arod vs Tek (I doubt many of the Sox like ARod but who does?)

Posada and Don Zimmer vs Pedro

Joba vs Youk (though Joba is friends with Buchholz and maybe Lester)

sure, there has been some but it’s not as if a majority of the players on either team “hate” each other. There is of course some sense of rivalry but it doesn’t compare to the 70’s.

  7. dave

Im sure russo’s giants lineup has never had two weak hitters back to back considering bengie molina was their biggest producer last year. He should stick with what he knows – which is probably nothing but definitely nothing involving the yanks.

  8. Boston Dave

    Bad Scooter,

first, it’s not 2 automatic outs but maybe it’s close

second, WHAT teams have great players hitting 8 and 9?

I’d say the fact that the criticism is on the 8 and 9 hitters ia actually a GOOD thing. 8 and 9 hitters are there for a reason and in the Yankees case, they usually have some of the best 8 and 9 hitters in the game.

  9. dave

    Boston dave,

All i meant was that there has been some anger between players in this decade and it hasnt all been just the media and the fans. I wasnt around in the 70s though so I wont even pretend like I could compare the two but I know there has been a few fights within the last few years.

  10. Kyle

That makes it more imperative that Teixeria and Cano do not get off to their usual slow starts. The bottom of the order is brutal.

  11. Yankee Trader

    Dave and others-

Lengthy medical article attached, by Dr. Philippon et al. Focus on the results and discussion in lower 1/3rd. I suppose the question was asked by the Yankees, if any other elite baseball players had this procedure, and if no complications were able to play nine years after the procedure.

    http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.g.....id=1950586

  12. LE Gard

Teixeria has such a nice smile

  13. Y26

Ozzie Guillen said that if Swisher was not traded, he would be their 4th outfielder

  14. Boston Dave

    dave,

i know… i was just saying its different. i could be wrong but it seems like opposing ballplayers these days are more friendly with each other in general.

there have definitely been incidents between the Sox and Yanks and I’m sure there will be more. I’m not sure if the cause is hatred for each other or just the fact that they are in the same division, play every year 19 times, and things are bound to happen.

  15. JR

I’ve been to a few parties in the bullpen box and the amount of leftovers you walk out with is worth the price of the ticket. There’s a new concession manager there so maybe the portions are a little smaller. I will probably be at those games in an official capacity

  16. Boston Dave

    Ron,

I can’t make the outing but I think it’s great that you are setting it up. Thanks to you for doing that.

  17. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__

“All i can say is at least you guys get to listen to Yankee talk. Not much here in So Cal. I guess Kay is better on his talk show then on his play by plays trying to figure out what the next nickname going to come out of his mouth. Couldnt stand the generation trey”

SoS: feel you. Didn’t know you were in Cali. Don’t know why, but Kay has grown on me in the past 1 year. (He needs to tone down his HR calls for the opposing team tho). You right, on the Generation Trey. Although, don’t expect we wil have to worry about that anymore : )

  18. 2009 Yankees

The outing sounds good but I’m still miffed that I got stiffed from one of the people who never paid me for the ticket they bought off me. They even left early.

  19. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__

“He was once traded for a couple of players (as an announcer). Loved Dizzy Dean”

wow. Enjoy hearing these type of stories.

I remember watching the Dizzy Dean story (movie) a while back. It was a good movie. They say his announcing (on the radio) used to have English teachers, up in arms. lol

  20. Boston Dave

    SoS,

    where in SoCal?

I’m spending my days right now in San Diego. Can’t beat it during the winter.

I’m trying to find a Yankees bar with no luck yet (or any place that shows the games). There are about a dozen Sawx bars unfortunately. ugh…

  21. Joe PMT

I take Spring Training pitching performances with a grain of salt, especially the relievers in the late innings. They are facing minor leaguers who have no shot of making a team.

  22. BGNYY

I will fly up from TN if its July or August

  23. JoeyA

Here is an argument my friends and I are always having:

I am a Michael Kay hater. My friends don’t mind him. I have a personal affinity for Ken Singleton.

What does everyone on here think? Really interested in the opinions of this blog.

  24. dave

This is from the article above regarding why they resume exercise the day of the surgery:

“Physical therapy exercises were implemented within four post-operative hours. It is our belief, based on clinical observation, that this, in addition to an early emphasis on passive hip motion (particularly internal rotation) reduces the incidence of adhesion formation.”

So its not that alex is some sort of super healer or that they decided to speed up his rehab regiment but this is just part of their procedure for all of these types of surgeries. This doesnt indicate that alex will be coming back any sooner IMO based on what they said above about 45 of the same surgeries that alex is currently undergoing. All 45 professional athletes resumed phys therapy four hours after surgery.

  25. Yankee Trader

    Pete-

BTW there’s a 1-800 number for Dr Philippon and email for contributing author David Kuppersmith at the end of the attached article if you want to investigate, what the long term success is of this operation, after part two, if no complications, and will he be able to fullfill at 3rd base, the rest of his contract. I know the data is probably small for professional baseball players.

    http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.g.....id=1950586

  26. dave

    Boston Dave,

yOUr probably right but I really dont mind seeing some strong emotions from a player in big games with those two teams. It reaffirms that the players still actually care about winning as much as we do or close to as much as we do.

  27. Joe PMT

Kay is ok with the play-by-play… its when he tries to create conversation when hes terrible. He asks random questions that have nothing to do with the game. During blowout games or games without a lot of action, he is tough to take, but other than that, he isin’t bad.

He is MUCH better on his radio show though.

  28. 2009 Yankees

Kay is MUCH better these days since he doesn’t do as many games. He has his moments but when it’s him, O’Neill and Singleton, it’s an enjoyable broadcast.

  29. EricVA

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to say that I drove up from Virginia last year for the game and it was a ton of fun. Being Sunday outings, I can’t do it again this year, but I urge you all to go. Besides having fun watching the game, it was worth the 15 minute conversation I had with Pete about the Yankee clubhouse.

  30. m

Kay is at his best in the booth when he’s the butt of jokes. No, I’m serious. He used to be a pompous poop. But Leiter and, later, O’neil did a great job of lightening the mood. At Kay’s expense. He’s at his best when he’s self-deprecating.

I’m sure the true Kay is the one on ESPN 1050.

  31. Fran

According to New York Post.com, the doctor who did Alex’s operation was so pleased with the way the surgery went that he said it may make the second surgery a lot easier with a shorter recovery. I posted the quote below.

“And the news is better than expected concerning further surgery Rodriguez will need after the season when a larger impingement will be fixed. Initially, it was believed Rodriguez wouldn’t be ready for the start of 2010 spring training. Now, because of today’s procedure, Phillipon said Rodriguez could require less than the 6-9 weeks it is going to take to recover from today’s operation.”

  32. Zolio

Flaherety is so bland. Cone also comes off as awkward sometimes.

Singleton and O’Neil are the best, Leiter ain’t bad either.

  33. JoeyA

IMO, I can listen to the Mets broadcasting team above the Yankees.

Obviously, I watch Yankee games and, therefore, listen to Kay. But, I watch Mets games as well, and their team is much more tolerable and much less biased.

  34. JoeyA

Singleton/Oneill/Leiter or Kay is my ideal team. Kay or Leiter, in small doses, is fine with me.

Singleton needs to work on the homerun call though.

  35. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__

“Singleton and O’Neil are the best, Leiter ain’t bad either”

    agree

  36. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__

Bernie starting in LF (for PR)

    Beltran in CF

    Alex Rios in RF

  37. Christina

Leiter is my fav. Him and Kay make the broadcast fun. Singleton is a little bland but he has some great baseball knowledge.

side note- Was sitting across from Sterling and Waldman tody- they were sitting together in the stands. Anyhow, during the game they did this thing for bernie and they had taken clips from Sterling- you know hes gotta love hearing himself. Nice guy, but sometimes I think he is watching a completely different game when he is broadcasting.

  38. Roger(from amsterdam)

    Let’s go Holland!!!

  39. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__

“Singleton needs to work on the homerun call though”

would like to see Kay work on his homerun call (for opposing team HR’s). In games the Yankees are losing, it is like rubbing salt in a wound.

For anyone interested, I went to the blog outing last summer and had a great time. I don’t know if I’ll be able to go this summer, but I hope I am.

  41. JoeyA

speaking of announcers, Yankees have any armband or spot on the jersey for Murcer?

I realize, with the new stadium and all, theres already patches/artwork on the jersey/hat, but I think it would be fitting for a Murcer black band on the sleeve.

The game after Munson died solidified Murcer as an unforgettable Yankee, IMO.

  42. Fran

Hey Rebecca, how did you get to Scranton last year? How long a trip is it from NYC?

  43. JoeyA

Kay needs to work on his unbiased playcalling in general.

A-Rod HR: Going back, on the track, @ the wall. SEE Ya! Oh My God A towering shot for Alex Rodriguez

Opposing team HR: “What happened? Oh, big shot for (player).”

  44. Bronx Jeers

“Prediction: It’ll be a lot closer to six weeks than nine. A-Rod will get after his rehab.”

I respect Alex more than I like him as the Yank’s 3rd baseman but I too believe he’ll be back as soon as humanly possible. The guy’s a worker.

  45. Uncle Ellsworth

    Christina,
How did Sterling look? The tigers announcers said he lost weight because of an illness.

“The Pride Of St. Louis” with Dan Dailey. Fairly factual. The biggest difference was that the team owner’s son was actually Augie Busch II who owned Budweiser. All in all, a good movie. If you like baseball movies, watch “The Stratton Story” (White Sox pitcher, Monty Stratton) with James Stewart.

  47. S.o.S.

    Boston Dave,
Im 30 minutes from San Diego. The weather was much better a couple weeks ago. We complain when its UNDER 70 degrees. I cant help you as far as bars go (married with children and on a leash. If Miggs is reading, he just moved from San Diego and was loose to do what he wanted. He would head you in the right direction. Enjoy the stay.

    vinny,
Im going to give Mike a try to be able to join you folks in complaining.

With my luck, I’d sign up for the blog outing, travel the 5 1/2 hours to get there and Kei Igawa will have pitched the day *BEFORE*!

    :-(

Can we make sure Igawa pitches that day?
If I travel that far I really want to see the AAA pitcher of the year.

I like the sound of the Scranton Day get-together. I wonder if this is a chance for PA and me to bond and become “best buds”?

“Eight Men Out” is an exceptional movie. “The winning Team” with Ronald Reagan and Doris Day is worth seeing only in the context of just how bad an actor Reagan really was. The story is about Grover Cleveland Alexander and mainly deals with his battles with what started out to be epilepsy and ended up battling alcoholism. Could have been a good movie with an actor that was athletic. “Jim Thorpe: All American” is a great movie with Burt Lancaster and highlights his track, major league and football careers.

Not a problem, Vinny. I’m no Siskell and Ebert, so, you’ll have to decide on your own. Baseball doesn’t make for such great movies because there is so little natural action. “Eight Men Out” actually had athletic actors that could play baseball and look natural. That is what made “*61″ such a great movie. Merlyn Mantle and Pat Maris said when they saw the two actors together, from the back, they got chills because they had the look and mannerisms down cold.

“Not a problem, Vinny. I’m no Siskell and Ebert, so, you’ll have to decide on your own. Baseball doesn’t make for such great movies because there is so little natural action. “Eight Men Out” actually had athletic actors that could play baseball and look natural.”

when checking netflix, was disspointed with the number of baseball movies. Yes, there are a surplus of fiction baseball movies. But very few, non-fiction. Maybe the explanation you provided, is the reason.

it seems like an account of baseball from 1850-1910, would make for an excellent movie. Basically a movie, which would bring some of the stories from Ken Burns documentary (discs 1 and 2) alive. Cartwright and his Knickerbockers playing the game in the fields of Hoboken, Cap Anson, King Kelly, primitive wood stadiums with crowds on the actual playing field etc.

So let me get some thoughts off my head.

    1. How can you not be excited about April tryouts for Ransom and Gardner? I think both guys could play roles on championship teams.

    2. AJ Burnett is going to have an awesome year, potential cy young winner and he’s just our number 3.

    3. Joba getting to prove that starting is the right move for him.

    4. The realistic chance that Melancon could start the year with the big club.

uncle ellsworth: thank you. I will check it. Neflix has it listed as a movie you can view online.

  93. Vince

Kay is indeed awful in trying to make conversation. Also, he repeats his “stories” waaaay too often during the season. If he ever gets a hold of the story about Ransom, he will bring that up at least 3 times a week. It gets very frustrating as a regular viewer. Also, it is extremely apparent he lacks a deep knowledge about the game.

Singleton is good, but fairly bland as a play-by-play guy (thankfully few and far between).

    Flahrety and Cone are awful.

O’Neill and Leiter are a treat to listen to, especially when compared to the other options.

Justice was coming into his own. He was a little coarse with his vernacular but he was starting to tell it like it is. Might not have sat too well with the YES heirarchy.

Kaat was the best. Great voice- great wealth of knowledge. Too bad they let him get away.

Kay’s a joke. Lots of mistakes and too many obvious points like ” Can’t win many games if you don’t score runs” is one of his favorites.

I like Singleton. Another great voice and he provides the closest thing to “a link to the past” which I find important when assembling a broadcast team.

  108. Betsy

I think I saw the Monty Stratton story a long time ago- I remember bawling my eyes out. Didn’t he lose a leg? I haven’t read all of the posts yet, so I apologize if this was already discussed.

I LOVE Ken Singleton – he such a nice guy and he knows what he’s talking about. I respect what he has to say quite a bit. Coney is fun and I like Al – but nothing will ever compare to Rizutto, White and Messer. I don’t remember Messer that well at this point, unfortunately, but I still have fond memories of Scooter and White; I always loved the way Scooter would call Bill “White” – it was just the way he said his name that made me laugh out loud. Remember the time that Scooter introduced himself was “Bill White”? LOL

Does anyone remember when DeWayne Staats was the announcer? Also, there was one other guy – Spencer something? I can’t remember his whole name, but he was the announcer when Donnie hit his 6th GS of the season (or was it the 7th?), tying Gehrig……

I loved This Week in Baseball, particularly the music, and the Baseball Bunch…

Nope, I really enjoyed him. Didn’t even list him in my “analysis though because he was rarely on. Also, with the recent steroid allegations, he seems to really want to get away from baseball.

Justice is one of the select, and I really do mean select, announcers/analysts who give the viewer straight talk. If someone was doing crappy, he would call them out. If he thought the team was not going to win a playoff game/series, he said it.

dating back to his playing days, my favorite David Justice sound byte, took place in the 1998 playoffs (when he was with Clevland). When a reporter told Justice of the Cleveland fans treatment/harassing of David Wells, Justice rebuffed him, stating “Yankee Stadium fans couldn’t be any tougher, unless they showed up at the game with Uzi’s”

Robertson has been lights out this spring… I think he’ll grab the last spot.

Pete posted the quote from Girardi a few days ago that his plan was to carry a ‘true’ long man in addition to Coke. They said Coke can go from 1 batter to 2 innings. I guess thats what he meant when he said “1\2 a long man”, that he can go 2 innings or be an emergency one.

This is a really terrific article on AJ. He’s actually pretty introspective here….

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....p;c_id=nyy

**The Buddha stuff and the Swish quote is hilarious, but I found this the most interesting:

“I think Doc saw the high end of me that I never saw,” Burnett said. “I always knew that I was talented and what I could do, but I think he really saw what I could become, and I think he took it upon himself to show me the light, and I appreciate that. ”

I like AJ a lot – he seems like a very good guy. Now, he obviously had a lot of growing up to do even in Toronto, but that’s not a sin. It’s just lucky for him that Doc was around to show him the light as it were…….Few pitchers have AJ’s ability and it would have been an utter waste had it fallen by the wayside (for whatever reasons). AJ seems to have taken Doc’s example to heart – he’s not just paying lip service to him. If that’s the case, then as Jose Molina said after catching AJ yesterday: “wow”.

“Pedroia’s favorite target is the mild-mannered Yankees veteran Jeter, a member of the other half of the most bitter rivalry in the big leagues. Pedroia even has an advertisement featuring Jeter posted on his locker at Rogers Centre.

“I like getting on him. It’s fun,” Pedroia said. “I’m definitely enjoying it every day.”

“It’s pretty funny,” said Jeter. “He does it all in good nature. He’s fun to be around.”"

They are like the Rays/Arizona Cardinals

  196. COL 88

This reminds me so much of game 2 ALDS against Cleveland last year where we tried to hold that 1-0 lead and Andy kept performing Houdini acts to keep them off the scoreboard and they eventually scored

  197. Roger(from amsterdam)

  213. vinny-b __NYY fan and WBC promoter__

Rob Bradford of WEEI has a quote from Padres pitcher Jake Peavy: “Boston was a place that I told the Padres I would certainly be interested in playing. I don’t know if there were any talks. I gave the Padres a list and Boston was on that list. Boston was a place I told the Padres I would be interested in playing at. Set that straight for sure.”

  214. Brandon, Mr.Pringles: 'It's an acquired skill to play hard'

Three countries that may end up yet being a gold mine for baseball players will be India, Russia and China. In 8 years, China has gone from being a place where they barely knew what a baseball was to beating Taiwan. They have almost half of the world’s population.

  218. Brandon, Mr.Pringles: 'It's an acquired skill to play hard'

Cheer up Roger and get some rest your country win or lose represented itself well in this tourney.

Because Girardi was on one of the losing teams, he had to do a little extra running as penance, along with the other groups that did not win.

“Team U.S.A. did not do very well,” Girardi said. “A. J. made a critical error on hole No. 3, but I didn’t help at all.”

Bruney agreed. “I did good,” he said. “But I had Girardi on my team. I blame him.”

  222. Boston Dave

good thing the Yankees have a ’strategic alliance’ in China and plans for added presence (possibly a baseball academy)

  223. jennifer

  224. Brandon, Mr.Pringles: 'It's an acquired skill to play hard'

Erasmus is 17 I could just imagine the stuff going in his head, P.S. damn the Yankees dropped the ball in letting thier prospects play in this thing, what better place for them to learn. In the next WBC let them play in this thing, would have been nice seeing DeLeon or Sosa on team DR or WDR instead of sent to minor league complex sent to WBC. It is what it is

  225. Joe

Why didn’t Jurrjens and Andru Jones play for the Netherlands?

  226. saucY

i have to see what’s going on, but another SWB trip sounds fun.

There is a gentleman in Curacao who lives by the ocean. His eyes are clear as the sea waters and, like the ocean, he is determined. his name is Bert Knubben.(64) He is on the beach of the BREEZES Resort Hotel and a craftsman of the privileged “kings” black coral jewelry which he obstinately insist must be written black “koral”. A nice touch, since the initials are his own and on Curacao, he is similar with this valuable gem which he painstakingly works in his tiny shop, the KORALART gallery, together with his pretty wife Fennie, on the palm beach of the Breezes Holiday Resort.
