that is possible but I guess that was part of the reason why they said it was unlikely.

further, if toronto needs to shed payroll as reported, it doesnt matter. if they can shed $22 over 2 years for $12M over 3 years, that’s a big deal.

I don’t think either of us can speculate over how that deal would go down considering Toronto may have to part with a guy like Roy Halladay over nothing more than $$.

I agree that the Yanks wouldn’t pay both salaries. Of course it’s just a wild rumor. I thought it was interesting solely because Igawa may actually have some value (vs zero value) if he can continue to pitch well in ST and AAA.

In the scenario mentioned, the Yankees would inherit Rolen’s $22M, the Blue Jays would inherit Igawa’s $12M owed.

Where does $30M come from?

Because Toronto has no reason to take a chance on being stuck with a $12 mil contract if Igawa flops. They’d rather take a chance on Rolen producing. NYY would have to take on at least $8 mil of Igawa’s contract plus Rolen’s. It’s NYY that would have the need, not Toronto.
