Brett Gardner changed his approach at the plate last season and it continues to pay off this spring.

A reader from Japan sent a link to this story about a rescued statue and a long-standing baseball curse.

Seems like Bernie Williams got into a beef in Puerto Rico.

————

I have a Twitter account that I opened a few months back. I’ve been trying to determine how it could help the blog. Now that I have an iPhone, I can blog on the go. So I don’t see how Twitter updates would change much.

But a reader, Steven, suggested I use a free service called Twitter Feed. Via my RSS feed, I can broadcast the URLs of a new blog update using Twitter.

So if you’re all about Twitter, start following PeteAbe and you’ll get blog updates that way if you want.

If anybody else has any good ideas, please feel free to clue me in. They didn’t have the fancy interweb when I was in journalism school and I’m sort of stumbling around in the dark on this stuff. But we’re getting there.

Hey, GB7, are you still up?

Looks like you might be right about Montero sticking as a catcher:

“Without question, he is significantly improved this year as opposed to last year,” Cashman said. “To the point that we don’t really doubt he’s going to be a catcher in the big leagues.”

Another cool factoid from the article is Montero’s mother was a catcher too.

Hey Pete off-subject abit but…there will soon be a new i-phone application out that will let you get your XM-Sirius subscription on it. Spring I believe..announced yesterday. This may finally push me to get an i-phone.

  6. tim boat March 13th, 2009 at 5:40 am

don’t really believe that story about Bernie, like – at all.

looks like just another GOLD DIGGER to me!

  7. Wang IS Taiwan March 13th, 2009 at 6:39 am

Thanks for the effort, Pete, but Twitter is lame…

  8. Wang IS Taiwan March 13th, 2009 at 6:40 am

    Thanks for the post, Grace!

  9. Doreen March 13th, 2009 at 7:25 am

Doesn’t sound like Bernie to me. :(

    Grace -

    Nice story about Wang.

    Clare -

I read that piece on Montero. Not only his mother, but his brother is a catcher, too. Another Molina family? It sounds like he’s very motivated to improve. That’s a good thing. If the Yankees are lucky it will be a smooth segue from Posada to Montero.

I’ve got a facebook page and I sometime do the status updates, but I just can’t seem to figure out why I would want/need Twitter. I mean, unless people have a need to know which room I’m cleaning or what I’m buying at the supermarket in real time. :) Seriously, aside from being a novelty, what are some real uses for Twitter?

  10. jerseybillfromva March 13th, 2009 at 7:39 am

    you went to school?

  11. raymagnetic March 13th, 2009 at 7:44 am

Twitter is cool for social media marketing. If you’re trying to build exposure to a website or to yourself it’s a cool little program.

    Doreen,

I’d love to know which room you were cleaning, which cleanser you’re using, what spices you’re about to put into one of your pies that you bake etc. ;)

  12. raymagnetic March 13th, 2009 at 7:45 am

Pete, you’re already number one when doing a search for Yankee blogs but updating with Twitter with help with backlinks and keep you in your number one spot.

  14. Jim PA March 13th, 2009 at 7:48 am

I don’t think Bernie wouldn’t swat a fly, let alone strike a woman. Let’s hope it was just hurt pride and too much Bacardi.

Why does the media think the yankees have problems getting to Mo? The bullpen was out strength last year.

  17. BGNYY March 13th, 2009 at 8:26 am

How many people would believe the story if the name was Alex not Bernie…. We don’t know anything about these players off the field

Probably because Joba is not in it this year.
Hopefully the other guys will step up.

Lots of people with red eyes heading to work today here in Syracuse…

  20. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 8:29 am

I don’t believe the story about Bernie, but then I’m always suspicious when these types of stories break about celebrities.

  21. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 8:35 am

Neat piece on Montero – and it’s pretty neat that his mother was a catcher. I love that he is dedicated to becoming a catcher and continues to work hard to improve his skills. When you combine that with his natural talent, well – you have a good thing. I saw him on YES against the Reds and he didn’t look THAT big; folks were making him out to be Paul Bunyan………

  22. CW March 13th, 2009 at 8:37 am

Pete Abe on twitter. A-Rod will never be free.

J/k… keep up the good work!

  23. will March 13th, 2009 at 8:51 am

Who pitches against the red sux tonight

  24. Giuseppe Franco March 13th, 2009 at 8:53 am

Why does the media think the yankees have problems getting to Mo? The bullpen was out strength last year.

    ————

Because many folks in the media are a bunch of idiots. It’s all about marque names and little else.

For instance, if you took Bruney out of the bullpen mix and added Joba – many of these same nitwits would argue that you’ve just upgraded your pen by eons when in fact the upgrade would be rather minimal.

It’s worth nothing that Bruney was outstanding last season and had just as good of a year out of the pen as Joba did.

Will Bruney continue that success? We’ll soon find out.

But the truth of the matter is that people like Madden, George King, Klapisch, and a handful of others aren’t really all that informed on the very team they supposedly cover.

This is going to be the best bullpen the Yanks have had since 2003 and certainly has the potential to be as good as any since 2000.

Unfortunately, these guys don’t do their homework – which is why the other beat writers/reporters like Pete, Kepner, Feinsand, Ken Davidoff, and Sweeny Murti have surpassed the old guard in reliability and being much more in touch with the hardcore fans.

The pen was very good last season and they should be even better with a significantly reduced workload and a full season of Bruney, Marte, and Coke in addition to other options like Melancon.

Right now, the pen is the least of my worries.

  25. Count of Montefusco March 13th, 2009 at 8:53 am

“Your mother was a catcher” sounds like some serious smack talk.

  26. jennifer March 13th, 2009 at 8:53 am

    Wanger.

BTW has everyone gotten the update from facebook? It is awful! I sent an email telling them so hopefully enough people complain and they go back to the old format. I can’t find anything on there now.

  27. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother March 13th, 2009 at 8:56 am

LOL Count. Lots of spin-offs to that one…

  28. Brad March 13th, 2009 at 8:59 am

Oh good. The John Rocker wannabe pitches against the Yankees tonight. That would be Papelbon.

  29. hokiehill March 13th, 2009 at 9:01 am

ytou should have seen what your mother was catchin last night! Oh!!

  30. Benny Blanco March 13th, 2009 at 9:06 am

I guess Mike Lupica couldn’t go a week without writing about arod.

  31. JohnC March 13th, 2009 at 9:13 am

    Brad:

I am not a big College basketball fan but that was a game for the ages last night. Unbeleievable! 6 OTs. Just a crime that someone had to lose that game. I’m sure that will be On ESPN Classic very soon. Think you have red eyes in Syracuse? Just imagine how UCONN fans must feel.

  32. Patrick March 13th, 2009 at 9:17 am

Man I’m tired.. I stayed up and watched the whole Syracuse-Uconn game.

Brandon, I don’t care what you say, that game was a CLASSIC!

Cuse is going to rip West Virginia to shreds tonight, I don’t care how tired they are. Even if they lose though, I’ll be happy. They need some rest for the NCAA tournament.

  33. pat March 13th, 2009 at 9:20 am

    m

I’ve never been a big fan of people here or anywhere calling someone “a cancer” but considering Papelbon’s mates in the clubhouse, particularly poor choice of words.

  34. Joey's Poodle March 13th, 2009 at 9:26 am

Some of the grownups in his own clubhouse have probably already explained that they’ll let Papelbon know if he ever reaches the point where his critiques on future HOF’ers might be of interest. And that he can shut it until that day arrives.

  35. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother March 13th, 2009 at 9:27 am

    John C

Yeah, our eyes are red from being tired and excessive partying, theirs are red from being tired and sad.

  36. DurhamYankee March 13th, 2009 at 9:29 am

How anyone can sit here with a straight face and say last nights basketball game was not a classic is unbelievable. It would have been close to a classic game if Devendorf’s shot falls at the end of regulation. 6 OT’s??? WOW

  37. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother March 13th, 2009 at 9:34 am

    DurhamYankee

12 year old kids say a lot of crazy things.

  38. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 9:34 am

I saw the back page of the Daily News in my office- it said “Strong Start for Santana”……..LOL. Sure, he pitched very well yesterday……NOT. Ok, the guy obviously came out of it healthy, which is what counts, so why again is CC held to a ridiculous standard? Of course, this is the same paper that celebrated when the Mets got Santana (and paid lots of $$$ and prospects, mediocre as they may be) and trashed the Yankees for signing CC…….Asking for objectivity from them is apparently a fruitless task.

  39. Bronx Jeers March 13th, 2009 at 9:39 am

I can’t believe that Bernie would ever hit anyone especially a female fan. It’s ludicrous.

  40. jennifer March 13th, 2009 at 9:40 am

Betsy are you serious? If CC’s outing was garbage so was Johans. It is like they love to tear down all Yankees. Quite the double standard. If CC had the same outing as Johan they’d be criticizing him.

  41. Russell NY March 13th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Betsy – the Yankees are held to a different standard than everyone else.

If they were playing in a division against the Marlins, Nationals, Braves this year they wouldn’t even be in the paper. It would be a given they are the NL East Champs.

But because the Mets are such a bad franchise with the highest payroll in the NL and can’t even hold off choking to crap teams, it is story whenever anything good happens to them. Like someone being healthy.

  42. Joba the Great March 13th, 2009 at 9:47 am

How many OTs did you last, Pete?

  43. Scott47 March 13th, 2009 at 9:51 am

Papelbon is a bafoon, he picked up where schilling left off. Get some time in the league before you become the spokeman for your team.

  44. Billy March 13th, 2009 at 9:54 am

screw twitter! just do updates here only!

  45. pat March 13th, 2009 at 10:03 am

    Betsy

I officially swore off the Daily News earlier this week. The Madden and Lupica whining have always gotten on my nerves but when Feinsand had a co-byline on a story that quoted a restaurant owner in Vail on how much pain Alex looked to be in and what he had for dinner and it was in the sports not gossip section, I was done.

Reading the inane CC headline yesterday and this morning that Lupica couldn’t come up with a non-Alex thought for a column only validated that choice more.

  46. S.A.-The 2009 MLB season is almost here March 13th, 2009 at 10:06 am

I think I’m ready to give up on the NY Daily News

  47. jennifer March 13th, 2009 at 10:26 am

Lupica is such a load. All he does is rip on Alex, what would he do if Alex wasn’t here? He wouldn’t have anything to talk about. Well he probably would go back to his butt kissing of Jose Reyes,.

  48. ALB3 March 13th, 2009 at 10:27 am

I’ve seen Montero play in Charleston a few times and have gotten autographs from him a few times.

I’m a year or so older than he is and I’m about 6’2″-6’3″

He didn’t see too large in height, but he was certainly large in muscle mass.

My explanation of him is.. take Ivan Rodriguez and grow him to 6’4 and that’s Jesus Montero. He’s a big rock.

  49. Brian from PA March 13th, 2009 at 10:38 am

If that story about Bernie is true than that’s extremely unfortunate.

But i don’t buy it. The woman is probably trying to get some attention. Bernie has always come off as an extremely laid back guy and i’ve only heard that he’s pretty accessible and courteous to the fans.

  50. m March 13th, 2009 at 10:53 am

More smack talk-”What did your mother catch?”

    pat,

Agreed. First of all, why did he have to go on and on? Just say it was difficult when guys don’t show up to play and move on. Manny’s moved on, why can’t Jonathon? That’s definitely not the Yankee way. ;)

So, like I said, they showed the whole quote. He said it twice. Linda Cohn and another person later in the day said something to the effect of “Dude, have some sensitivity”. Of course, BSPN sanitized it later, not showing the cancer part of the quote.

Manny’s rebuttal was perfect. I’m in LA. I’ve moved on (from all that). Can’t control what people say or think. “It is what it is”.

  51. m March 13th, 2009 at 10:55 am

I’m afraid to click on the link. Did Bernie forget his wife again? :(

  52. Giuseppe Franco March 13th, 2009 at 11:04 am

Meh, I think people get way too uptight about that cancer comment.

I’m sure everyone here either has a family member or friend who has had to deal with that terrible disease.

My mother is a breast cancer survivor and I’ve had two grand parents die from cancer. I also have a 10 yr old nephew that is a brain cancer survivor.

But when I heard about Papelbon’s comments, the furthest thing from my mind was how insensitive he was for using that word.

As much as I can’t stand Papelbon for so many reasons – this one is at the bottom of my list.

I guess some people like to get worked up over it for the sake of being worked up.

  53. m March 13th, 2009 at 11:10 am

    Guiseppe Franco,

I don’t get worked up over it, I’ve accepted it as part of the sports venacular.

I laughed at Papelbon for saying anything more than anything. Even Cohn started with “I guess not everyone has moved on from Manny leaving Boston”.

I thought it was significant that BSPN tv people actually made editorial comments over comments that are pretty accepted nowadays.

My beef with Papelbon is that he can’t shut his yapper. He thinks he the big dog, but he’s just that yapping Chihuahua to me. Yap, yap, yap, yap.

  54. m March 13th, 2009 at 11:12 am

It was also significant, that in later reports on the topic, they left out that part of the quote. Someone must’ve said something.

  55. kill.schill(ing) March 13th, 2009 at 11:13 am

Something tells me that either the journalist’s report of Bernie’s altercation has been exaggerated or the woman who filed the complaint exaggerated what transpired.

Can anyone envision Bernie hitting someone, a woman no less, for taking his photo?

  56. Brad Pitt's better-looking brother March 13th, 2009 at 11:14 am

“I guess some people like to get worked up over it for the sake of being worked up.”

    - – - – - – - –

careful, you might work up non-working people with that statement…
    so insensitive.

  57. riyankee42 March 13th, 2009 at 11:15 am

hey does anyone have any idea who is pitching today???

  58. m March 13th, 2009 at 11:16 am

Don’t know the details about Bernie. But people would be surprised that Marvin Harrison got into an altercation with a fan who wanted an autograph during pro-bowl week. Not saying Bernie is guilty or anything like Harrison.

  59. five iron from fenway March 13th, 2009 at 11:17 am

    And is the game televised?
My guess is Wang since he will follow CC.

  60. m March 13th, 2009 at 11:18 am

    I think it’s Wang v. Wakefield.

    Night game @ Ft. Myers.

  61. sevrox March 13th, 2009 at 11:18 am

    wang be pitching

Maybe Wang but I am sure the Yanks aren’t yet concerned about who follows who in a ST game at this juncture anyway.

    Game on MLB at 7

  63. m March 13th, 2009 at 11:21 am

Didn’t Pete say it would be Wang, Hughes, Burnett?

  64. riyankee42 March 13th, 2009 at 11:21 am

SWEET!!!!! im in st pete till sunday and going to the game later w some loser sox fans lol….

  65. jennifer March 13th, 2009 at 11:30 am

So we can actually see the game? yeah :-) Sucks that it is not at home though.

  66. Dan March 13th, 2009 at 11:30 am

Bummer on Bernie. Hope its not true.

  67. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 11:33 am

Jen, I’m serious – the News doesn’t even pretend to be objective anymore. The Post is trashy, but it’s generally trashy overall to both the Mets and the Yankees. The DN reminds me of the good old, old, old days where newspapers were basically vehicles for either Republican or Democratic platforms and they wrote venomous things about the other party. The News is a Mets vehicle and they don’t pretend to be otherwise.

  68. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 11:40 am

Pat, I didn’t know about that article about Alex – wow. I wonder if there are any decent people out there who won’t speak with a newspaper – as much as I despise the News, that restaurant owner should have shut his trap. Restaurants in places like Vail (where there is a high celeb quotient) who make a good living on celeb patronage learn to keep their lips zipped about the celebs they see – this guy seems to be out of his league.

  69. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 11:42 am

Sean Casey was on MLB network last night and he admitted that, while Manny was a distraction, he thought the term “cancer” was overstating the case…..and he said this more than once. I think he was surprised at Paplebon’s comments.

  70. Betsy March 13th, 2009 at 11:46 am

Hughes and Burnett pitch tomorrow – Hughes in Bradenton against the Bucs (not on tv) and Burnett (yay!) in Tampa against the Stro’s, on YES. It’s the only time I would ever be happy not seeing Phil, lol – I’m itching to see AJ pitch (even though it’s a ST game and it’s only his 2nd outing). The Yankees are taking very few players to Ft. Meyers tonight (X, Brett and Wang, I think), so don’t expect much….except more gushing in the papers tomorrow about how invincible the Sox are.

  71. saucY March 13th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

i’m not sure about twitter. kind of like facebook, but without all the other bells and whistles, and just status updates.

don’t see why i would need both, but i guess a lot of people are using it, and maybe it’s better for following celebrities and whatnot (who don’t want to maintain a full blog or whatever else)

  72. Matthew Cohen March 13th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

    Pete,

    Great article on BG’s stance.
